The hosting team has carefully been observing this thread and other chats, and would like to communicate our thoughts.
We agree that 8x SV slots may be stale, and would like to include the fairy Oldgens (SS, SM, XY), with one slot for each. So 5x SV, 1x SS, 1x SM, 1x XY would be the format. We think these generations are reasonably accessible, and other suggested formats like Bo3 slots take away from the spirit of each player getting to win one game for their team that makes team tournaments fun, and is a burden to prepare for with multiple sets in a two week span.
However, in order for the pools to work, there would need to be multiples of 4 teams (8/12/16 etc.) So to ensure this, we are thinking the best path is to have a one week qualifying round, with each team seeded based on last years’ performance, and any new teams being seeded below prior existing teams. Then we will have enough qualifying matchups to ensure a multiple of 4 number of teams remain.
For instance, if there were 14 teams, then the #11 seed and #14 seed would be matched up, as would the #12 and #13, the two winners of that round would be the eleventh and twelfth teams in the tournament. We feel that this is the best way to both have a few old generation slots in the tournament while still maintaining the inclusivity of allowing any team to be able to form if possible.
As for other considerations, like if the US should be split into a fourth team, we will have to wait until we are deeper into the signups to know how reasonable that is.
We will keep this thread open to gain further feedback on the above, or any other points that come up during the signups process.
