favourite superhero/villain thread

Hero(s)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: I group them all together, but if need my favorite it's Donatello. Turtles are my favorite animal and I like ninjas, so my 5 year old brain exploded into awesomeness when I first watched it.

Gambit: I always thought he was a cool character and I really liked his power. Being able make anything explode just by touching is just sexy. I even named my dog after him. :P

Villain
The Riddler: I will love puzzles and riddles so I remember I would always try to figure out the riddle before Batman does. I liked how he's playfully sadistic.

He's smart... amazing... kind... cuddly... spectacular...

Probably the most consistently unstable hero of all time. Not only does he have multiple personalities, but he's convinced that he's an avatar of justice by an (arguably imaginary) Egyptian God. Even through his problems, he becomes redeemed and stops his vigilante killing spree... depending on the continuity.

The Scarecrow is just... wow. He is probably the only villain in comic book history who's main goal is never to kill anyone. He's simply content to fuck with their minds on a grand scale. Add that to the fact that he has hands-down the most terrifying costume (through every version) in all of superhero-dom.

Also, for extra terror, Joel Scumacher originally planned

to play him in the never-made sequel to Batman and Robin.
This would be one combination the laws of filmmaking knew should never be realized...

Hero - Spider-Man. Grew up with this guy, watching the 90's cartoon, collecting trading cards, comics, toys, and video games. When I got older, I got to know more about the storyline, and how Parker's life related so much more to the average joe then any other superhero. His constant witty banter and fighting style are awesome, and come on, who doesn't wish they could be WEB SLINGIN' around NYC?

Villain - Carnage. This guy is so badass. Demented psycho killer, who gets all the same powers as Venom. The visual energy that flows from his pictures is just pure awesome.
I mean his hands are always transformed into something huge, sharp, and pointy. And he's crazy!

this thread is now about the best batman

he's batman that we could actually relate to without having our parents murdered going to a movie theater (granted his dad was murdered by members of the Jokerz because he stopped them from some shit but whatever). he's a kid with problems that goes under the tutelage of old batman who stopped because he broke his own creed when he pulled a gun on a robber because he was having a heart attack. so now new batman needs to juggle being a teenager with teenager problems (lying to his girlfriend, getting a girlfriend, parties).

the series also has a bunch of shit like the Jokerz gang and the stalker it is amazing

edit: honorary mention to teen titans that was a good show

My favorite superhero is definitely Spider-Man. While he has these incredible powers, he created his most widely recognized ability (his webs) through sheer ingenuity. Unlike so many heroes, his primary goal is not revenge, but guilt. He wants to be a regular person, but his duties as a superhero keep getting in the way. Most of all, he doesn't suffer exclusively from superpowered madmen or space viruses, but also the regular ups and downs of life: relationships, the flu, his job.

Hero - Captain America. People talk about being able to relate to Spiderman but I'd like to think I was never a whiny teen so I can't do that. I did, however, try to join the army on three occassions and failed three times on medical grounds while all my best friends buggered off to fight in wars, so I can instantly relate with Steve Rogers. I love the historical relevance of the character (I always loved studying WWII in school, so I get a kick out of Cap's 40's flashbacks) and the constantly recurring theme of 'it's whats inside that counts' always makes for a good story, in spite of the cliches. Unfortunately, sometimes he's presented as an overly-patriotic, pigheaded doofus (see Ultimate Captain America), but when they get it right it's a joy to read (see Brubaker's Cap run or Millar's Ultimate Cap).

Villain: The Joker, how a character can be so one-dimensional and yet have so much lasting appeal is just too difficult to explain. Like Cap, he's sometimes presented poorly (I hate when they present him as a generic 'psychotic clown')...Heath Ledger's Joker was just perfect in my eyes...gritty, unpredictable, ingenius and above the materialistic desires of other crooks. The Joker in DKR is pretty cool too.
