Yello! I've been recently moving into 8 bit art using references a ton now, I normally make them on a sandbox sever of a game called Arras.io For Those wondering. The site is not inflicted to Smogon, or well, the art genre as a whole, however recently, the community's moved to make art in them, and I have joined The movement as well.
