First competitive team

Hi Smogon!
So, this is the first competitive team I've built, and it's not the best team, but I've battled with it and it's done alright. I'm not a really experienced competitive Pokemon battler, but yeah. Comments, criticism etc. are appreciated :) Thanks everyone.

MORE IN DEPTH
423.gif

Gastrodon (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature (+SpD, -Atk)
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
- Recover

Since Rain teams give my team a bit of trouble, Gastrodon fits well into my team. With its ability Storm Drain significantly enhanced with the SpA boost, access to Toxic + Recover, and Scald + Ice Beam, it's a great counter to rain teams, with the capabilities of tanking and being offensive at the same time. Toxic on this Gastrodon may seem unusual with Toxic Spikes support already present from Forretress, but it cripples Lati@s, who are both immune to Toxic Spikes. Scald is a great Water STAB, with the great 30% chance of burn, which will further increase its tanking capabilities. Ice Beam hits Dragon types and Gliscor if its not behind a Substitute.

Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Toxic Spikes
- Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Gyro Ball

Forretress is my Rapid Spinner, and with Stealth Rock breaking the Gengar's Focus Sash, it plays a very important role in my team. It is also the entry hazard setter for my team, with Toxic Spikes and Spikes. With Forretress' Relaxed nature and minimum 0 IV Spe, Gyro Ball will do some reasonable damage on switch-ins to Forretress.

381.gif

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Psyshock

Offensive Latios is a great team member, with its awesome base Special Attack of 130, and its overall great base stats. It's also got the great powerful Dragon-type STAB, Draco Meteor, and because Latios isn't going to be staying in for very long, the SpA drop won't be doing much. With HP Fire and Draco Meteor, Latios has perfect coverage besides Heatran, who is dealt with by Surf anyways. Psyshock hits Blissey, Eviolite Chansey and other specially defensive walls. Latios can come in on the Earthquakes aimed at Heatran or Magnezone for a free switch.

094.gif

Gengar (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Disable
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast

With Disable having 100% accuracy now in 5th Gen, Gengar can take advantage of its most deadly set: SubDisable. With its many immunities and access to Substitute, Gengar can use this set very well. Substitute helps Gengar overcome status and helps it Disable easier. The awesome coverage that Shadow Ball + Focus Blast provides Gengar the ability to hit a wide range of Pokemon hard. Leftovers is the item used due to the prevalence of Tyranitar, Hippowdon and sandstorm in OU, and gives Gengar more survivability and opportunities for Substitute.

485.gif

Heatran (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature (+SpA, -Atk)
- Overheat
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]

With Heatran's base Speed of 77 being its lowest, Choice Scarf will help buff it up. This Heatran acts as a sweeper, and also great Fire-type move absorber, and with the Fire moves lured by Forretress and Breloom, Heatran is going to get many chances to get a free switch in and also a free boost to Overheat and Fire Blast. Fire Blast is there for situations where the SpA drop isn't suggested. Heatran also has the great Steel typing for all the Dragon-types lurking around OU.

286.gif

Breloom (F) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 232 HP / 216 SpD / 60 Spe
Careful Nature (+SpD, -SpA)
- Bulk Up
- Spore
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch

Bulk Up Breloom is my No. 1 T-tar counter. Because much of my team is vulnerable to sandstorm and Tyranitar gives my team hell, Breloom plays a big role in my team. Spore is there to decapacitate one member of the opponent's team, Bulk Up to increase its monster base 130 Attack and alright base 80 Defence. Seed Bomb and Drain Punch are Breloom's strong attacking STABS, with Drain Punch restoring HP along with Poison Heal + Toxic Orb.

Feel free to comment on the team and thanks in advance for any advice ! :)

Gastrodon (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
- Recover

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Psyshock

Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spe)
- Toxic Spikes
- Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Gyro Ball

Gengar (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Icy Wind
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball

Heatran (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature (+SpA, -Atk)
- Overheat
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Breloom (F) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 232 HP / 216 SpD / 60 Spe
Careful Nature (+SpD, -SpA)
- Bulk Up
- Spore
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch

Nice team you got here.

Okay, I don't really think you need two screeners. Magnezone functions great as one if played right, and Latios is better at sweeping IMO. I would try an offensive Latios and see how things go.

You are very weak to sandtstorm, specially defensive tyranitar give latios, magnezone, forretress, chandelure... and dragonite to an extent (ice beam) a hard time. Tyranitar coupled with a good offensive/defensive core will take you through hell and back. I'd suggest incorporating breloom somewhere within your team, possibly by removing one of your screeners, it should help out against sand much better

I found that offensive Latios was pretty good on the team, so here's the offensive Latios:

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Recover

I decided to swap Dragonite with Breloom, and here's the set.
286.gif

Breloom (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 236 HP / 212 SpD / 60 Spe
Careful Nature (+SpD, -SpA)
- Bulk Up
- Spore
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch
Also, should I implement the changes into the first post by editing, or should I just leave it?

Nice team, but I would recommend Draco Meteor on Latios, as he probrably wont be alive for too long, so the spec atk drop wont come back to haunt him.

Since your change of Dnite to brelloom I suggest switching chandelure to a very this pokemon that can take fire hits, but I believe do a better job at sweeping, thanks to better stats in all departments besides SPA, and somewhat in SPE. He'll be sticking around a lot longer then chandelure will be. Also this provides another steel typing to tank dragons, and the HP Ice to kill em. : Heatran.

Look here for a set. I say use the choice scarf set, with fire blast, and Hp ice.

Implemeted the offensive Latios set into the team. :) Just a question, do you think I should forgo Recover for Psyshock, or can I already deal with Blissey/Eviolite Chansey ?

Swapped Chandelure with Heatran, do you think the team is weak to Fighting-types now? (Magnezone, Cloyster, Heatran) with all the Fighting-types lurking around in OU .

You might want to swicth off one of your Pkmon weak to Fighting to a Gengar that act as Mixed Lead Sweeper (Personally mine), and can also Nutralize Magnezone's and Heatran's x4 Ground Weakness. here's the set:
Gengar @ Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
252 Sp.Atk/252 Speed/4 Sp.Def
Timid Nature (+Speed, -Atk)
-Icy Wind
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball
-Energy Ball
This Gengar never ceases to Amaze me in battles honestly, it can cripple your everyday D.Nite DD Sweepers and even other Dragons like Salamence. And because it had weaknesses to Psychic, Dark and Ironicly Ghost, Forretress can serve great synergy for it on all 3 weaknesses, and Latios can shut out some Psychic Moves.
Feel free to test out Gengar.
I may recommend to take out Cloyster due to its Mediocore Sp.Def, and can be played around easily AFTER the Shell Smash Drop in Def + Sp.Def.

I gave Gengar a go, and it did really well :D It had great defensive synergy with Heatran & Magnezone, and their 4x Ground weakness and Fighting weakness, and it made as a great sweeper too .

Hey,

Cool team. It seems like you have a lot of common threats covered although in my opinion the movesets of your Pokemon could be improved. Dual Screen Magnezone, although a great Pokemon, doesn't seem to fit on this particular team as your team really doesn't need dual screen support (the only 'real' set-up sweeper you have is Breloom which can usually set up just fine due to spore) and many steel types such as Scizor and Ferrothorn are easily taken care of by your Heatran. Rain teams actually look like they'll be harassing your team so I suggest you replace Magnezone with a bulky Gastrodon; it serves as an amazing counter to rain teams courtesy of its high special bulk and immunity to Water-type attacks which allow it to handle most rain sweepers very well.

4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

You may be wondering why I'm suggesting Toxic on Gastrodon when your team already has toxic spikes support - Toxic will ensure that Pokemon like Latios and Latias (which are immune to Toxic Spikes) won't be large threats anymore (the former, especially can do a ton of damage to your team as both Heatran and Forretress are weakened by repeated attacks). Additionally, I highly recommend that you switch out your current Gengar set (which is kinda useless in BW OU; a variant of what you're using was primarily used in DPP OU as a lead) for the Substitute + Disable set as it, in simple terms, just has more utility on a team like this (not to mention the fact that it greatly benefits from the entry hazards your team is providing).

Changes in Short

  • Tank Gastrodon over Magnezone
  • Substitute + Disable Gengar over current variant

Hi! :)
Thanks for the great advice. I previously had DD Dragonite and Shell Smash Cloyster on the team, which is why I had Dual Screen Magnezone on the team, but I also see why it isn't need much anymore on my team.
I found that SubDisable Gengar + Tank Gastrodon fitted into the team really well.
