First Warstory: The Best I've Written

So Smogon, this is my first warstory, and it takes place on the UU ladder. The match pits myself (Friar) against Goose, another player who is on the UU ladder regularly enough. However, neither of us had any knowledge of the other's team, as this was the first time we had seen these teams. My team is a hugely offensive team that centers around entry hazards to ease KO's, while Goose's team personifies a weather that has dominated since the UU Suspect's removal: Rain. This was a great match with multiple momentum shifts, so read on to see how it all played out.

Friar sent out Mesprit (lvl 100 Mesprit).
Goose sent out Electrode (lvl 100 Electrode).

dpicon101.png

Electrode is a lead I see often enough on the UU ladder. Electrode has replaced Crobat on many teams because it is the fastest Taunt available. Electrode also leads Rain teams, so I know I'm in for a tough fight. My team enjoys outspeeding the opponent's team, and that won't be happening due to Swift Swim. Also, Water type attacks from Water types really get double STAB, and few on my team can wall such an attack. My Mesprit is a TrickScarfer, so I decide to Trick my Scarf onto Electrode to prevent too much set up. It isn't like ScarfMesprit will be outspeeding anything with a Swift Swim boost, so the drop in speed is also negigible.

Mesprit used Trick.

Hmmmm... usually Electrodes Taunt me, but this one has Substitute. No biggie, the Sub is useless now, as Electrode is locked into Substitute. I decide to U Turn for the upper hand in the coming match up, as Electrode essentially has to switch.

Goose switched in Claydol (lvl 100 Claydol).

So far so good. Looking back, setting up Stealth Rock might have been the better choice, but I'm still in a great position. Few Rain teams have many Grass resists, so something is going to get smashed by Shaymin's Life Orb Seed Flare.

Goose switched in Ludicolo (lvl 100 Ludicolo ?).

dpicon492.png

dpicon272.png

Ludicolo under Rain is a nuisance for my team. There are 3 things my team hates: Pokemon who hit fast, pokemon who hit hard, and pokemon with great coverage. Looking at Ludicolo's resume, it is all three wrapped up into one Master of Disaster. Nothing on my team can take two shots from the deadly duck, so I'm forced to hope Shaymin can live an Ice Beam and hit Ludicolo hard with a Life Orb Seed Flare.

dpicon184.png

dpicon365.png

When I saw Walrein, I thought, "Oh shit, StallRein, I'm screwed." Then I remembered its a RAIN team, not hail. I am not at all familiar with a Rain Abusing Walrein, but I imagined it being something like Surf/Ice Beam/HP Electric/FIller. As Azumarill doesn't draw Ice moves, Roserade should be an easy switch in. With Rosie, I can start to set up my spikes, assuring Goose's pokes can't absorb my team's blows.

Friar switched in Roserade (lvl 100 Roserade ?).

Nuts Squared. I am foiled by a Critical Rain boosted STAB Surf from Walrein. I just lost another valuable Water resist, so now I'm down to just Azumarill in the way of water sponging. Walrein does not get Swift Swim so I switch in Blaziken to nail something hard.

Friar switched in Blaziken (lvl 100 Blaziken ?).

dpicon257.png

dpicon365.png

Goose has already lost Claydol, so I'm left guessing whether or not he would have multiple Fighting resists. I know weather changers such as Uxie are common, yet common Rain sweepers such as Kabutops and Omastar are weak to Fighting as well, so I decide to be predicable and use Superpower.

Blaziken used Superpower.

dpicon139.png

With that said, I doubt a -1 Superpower will OHKO Omastar. I need to get out of here, as Blaziken may have a sweep later in the game. The Surf is fairly obvious, but with only one Water resist left standing, I'm worried about how Azumarill will stand up to the pressure.

Friar switched in Azumarill (lvl 100 Azumarill ?).

That did a bunch for being resisted. Surf seems to be a 2HKO, but Claydol's Rain Dance peters out at just the right time, making sure Omastar can't 2HKO me. Azumarill can also spam Fighting moves (namely Superpower) and Goose hasn't proven he has a resist, so something is going to get smacked.

Goose switched in Electrode (lvl 100 Electrode).

Goose makes the smart play and sacrifices his Electrode. ScarfElectrode is pretty useless at this point in terms of supporting his Rain team so it was a good play. Azumarill is feeling the effects of Superpower though, and something could get a free set up with Azu at -1 Attack.

Goose switched in Kabutops (lvl 100 Kabutops ?).

dpicon184.png
v.s.
dpicon141.png

At least he switches in a Fighting weak. Goose's last two standing are Kabutops and Omastar, reppin' RBY. They are also both Fighting weak and unlikely to carry Rain Dance, so I'm feeling pretty good. I don't want Kabutops to get a free Swords Dance, so I decide to press on, even with -1 Attack. As a side note, both Kabutops and Omastar are scared shitless of Grass attacks, figures the only team members I've lost are Shaymin and Roserade >.<

Goose doesn't risk the switch and takes out Azu with X-Scissor. I still have Blaziken, Mesprit, and Rhydon, while he has Kabutops and Omastar. Rhydon is useless as he is a free "Kill me with 4x effective Water attack!" so for all practical purposes it's 2-2. I go to Blaziken to attempt a Superpower sweep.

Friar switched in Blaziken (lvl 100 Blaziken ?).

dpicon257.png

dpicon141.png

This is the do or die move, right here. Superpower is the obvious choice for me, but what move will he use? there are really two options that would have an effect on the battle:
1) He uses Aqua Jet.
2) He uses anything else.
If he uses anything other than Aqua Jet, I win because I outspeed and OHKO. If he uses Aqua Jet and I die, he wins. Now you may be saying, "Yeah he has Life Orb, but you are at 100%, you will live easy." Not so fast my friend. This is a ScarfKen, and my team is very weak to Swellow. To remedy this, I Ev'd my Blaziken to outspeed Swellow with the Choice Scarf attached. To do this, I needed a + speed nature. Which did I pick? Hasty! Also known as -Def! So if Kabutops packs Aqua Jet to keep up his sweep after Rain Dance ends, I have a chance of losing.

ALL RIGHT! Kabutops did have Aqua Jet, but it didn't KO Blaziken. After taking the near lethal shot, Blaziken became enraged and put the beat down on Kabutops. Its been a great game Goose, but I can't imagine me losing at this point. By the way Kabutops' 252 Attack Adamant Life Orb Aqua Jet versus 0/0 Hasty Blaziken = 86.71% - 101.99%. So I had a good chance to live the attack, but he could have won the match had the damage roll gone the other way.

(2-0) Friar wins!

What a great game! After two offensive teams worked to get the better of each other, it came down to one damage roll to decide the winner. Now it's time for Props and Slops:

Props:
-Blaziken, Mesprit, Azumarill, and Shaymin for killing at least one of Goose's pokemon.
-Kabutops, Omastar, Walrein, and Ludicolo for killing at least one of my pokemon.
-Mesprit, for Tricking Electrode
-Goose, for the great match
-Damage roll on Aqua Jet, for favoring me :)

Slops:
-Shaymin, for missing Claydol with Seed Flare
-Roserade, for amounting to crit-bait
-Tad bit of hax, but it made or a better battle!
-Rhydon, for being so scared of Rain teams he couldn't even enter battle once

Extras:
-Neither team got up any entry hazards
-Rain Dance was only set up once
-PLAY UU FOR GOD'S SAKE!

Thank you for reading the Warstory, I tried to pick a quick but intense battle to start off with, and I hoped you
enjoyed it.

-Friar-

It's a good match. Not the most impressive I've seen around, but it is a good match and a good first warstory, from what I've lurked about.

Average Comments, Good Battle, awesome for you first.

Oh my friend, you got mad haxed, so you deserved the win ^^
Also, this battle again show the importance of SR, since with SR Blaziken could have died easilier.

3.5/5

I've only been here for a few days, and most of those days have been confined to the shadows, as it were, but in that short time, I've really taken a shine to reading these warstories. As a fan of both UU and Rain dance teams, I enjoyed the read very much. I certainly feel for you with Seed Flare missing, and Roserade getting OHKO'd by a surf crit made me laugh out loud because the exact same thing has happened to me many times.

A decent battle as far as they go. This is a great example of how a normal team without any designated rain counter can still beat them, proving Rain's not as dominant as some people seem to think. Can you do this against a stall team, though?

Also, we seriously need to battle one of these days, I never seem to see you around.

It's good to see you can overcome Kabutops and Ludicolo; They are some of the most fearsome Rain sweepers besides Kingdra. I also liked how you portrayed surprise about Blaziken surviving the hit, however I would suggest not using weather teams as War Story material. They tend to end fast like this one, or the weather user comes up against something slower they can't beat and the match drags out. Great for a first though :D

Pretty decent match, though nothing spectacular. One thing that was odd was this:
"There are 3 things my team hates: Pokemon who hit fast, pokemon who hit hard, and pokemon with great coverage."

Your team has a CB priority user and a scarf user, so speed isn't too much of an issue.

pretty nice for a first warstory. give a little bit more depth into what you were thinking at the time and less of a telling us what you would do. but for a first this is awesome

Great for a first try, and I like reading UU battles. My only nitpick is that you can be a bit more descriptive. Other than that, good.

Keep it up!

Great Job for a first warstory! I should definitely write a UU warstory sometime (if i ever stop playing LC :D). Also, how can it be the "best you've written" if its your first warstory? Seems kinda contridactory.

Good Warstory! Maybe a tiny bit more descriptive but still very good.
@ Dragonite24 Its the best he's ever written because its the only one he's written.

Thanks for the (mostly) positive comments. @ Dragonite24 the title was a joke. I was definitely worried about the quality of battle, but it seems it was my comments that needed a little more work. I will keep that in mind if another warstory-able battle comes along. Also, @ MapleSandwich, the team does struggle a bit with stall teams, working on fixing that :)

cons:
-mediocre battle. there wasn't anything major that happened in the battle- it was mostly just "I hit you, you hit me. Oh no, I hope he doesn't hit me first!"
-hax. hax generated the only suspense in the story and it was one-sided against you, at that.
-lack of sufficient and detailed commentary. there was little explanation between attacks or description of what was going on in your head, etc etc.

pros:
-your setup was good.
-your writing wasn't bad.
-you didn't spoil things, aside from basically wrapping the story up once your Blaziken didn't die.

I would agree that the quality of the battle was quite poor, there were a fair few mistakes on both sides, and very little prediction or even just a small element of wanting to keep important Pokemon alive. For example, switching Roserade in was dangerous, considering he had STAB, Rain Boost etc... I'd want to see the calcs on that anyway! You probably could have gone straight to Rhydon to sacrifice it, seeing as it is poor against Rain full stop, that would have kept Roserade around for later! Maybe I am exaggurating, I guess I just feel that battles with Rain teams aren't really worth warstorying as they are often a short exchange of generic blows.

On the other hand, I really enjoyed your writing style, and analysis. I was entertained throughout the whole thing despite all of what I said previously. Good job, keep it up. I would love to see more from you, just be a little more selective or your battles next time!

4 / 5!

If the commentary had been more descriptive, this would have been an awesome first warstory. As it stands this is very mediocre, which is saying a lot with some of the other warstories laying about here. You did very well for you first try, but next time add a wee bit more description.

Very nice to see a UU Warstory that's decent, I like it. It wasn't a really exciting battle from my perspective, but I like the format, and the commentary was well written.

The advantage you held over your opponent was far too great for the story to be all that interesting. The writing was alright though.

The writing was very good, and for a first warstory, it's actually pretty decent. It could have used a smidge more description of your thought processes, but that'll come with time. Sorry about all the crits, but congrats!

3.5/5

I honestly could not rate this battle any higher than a 3/5 due to the hax and general "I get my sweeper in and he sacrifices, now he gets his sweeper in and I sacrifice" nature of the battle. There was not really any general prediction at all and the comments were somewhat lacking.

However it was decently short and sweet and easy to read so I'd say it was overall pretty good.
