Free MMOs

I've recently been wanting to play a good online MMO. My only experience with them has been Maplestory, which I ended up not liking once I realized that it was essentially all grinding.

Online searches have led me to lists of games, but not any meaningful reviews, and most of the games listed seem to be horribly outdated.

I'm sure there is a good portion of Smogonites that has experience with MMOs. Can anyone recommend me some good ones, and possibly provide a reason as to why you enjoyed it?

of free MMOs i have no doubt runescape is the most popular but like maplestory it is all level grinding, I think most MMOs are.

Well I don't mind grinding that much, but Maplestory was grinding turned up to 11.

Everything was accomplished by grinding. Nearly every quest revolved around grinding and generally followed the "You need X amount of an item, Y enemies drops the item Z% of the time." X was generally high. Z, and Y were generally low.

After the first 50 levels you started leveling up slooooooooow. Far too slow for my tastes.

As for Runescape, I feel they made the free portion of the game too much like a demo. That is how it was like back when I used to play it. I didn't enjoy it much then, so I think I'll pass on it now. I'm also really not fond of losing all my items/money if I ever die.

Given the time investment that MMOs take, I think if you're going to play one you might as well pay and make it a good one. Just give in and play WoW. EVE if you're crazy enough.

That or refresh this page until you see a Google ad for an MMO that looks interesting.

If I were going to pay I'd prefer a one-time payment system.

And I don't think I'd ever touch EVE. It sounds way too much like "srs business."

Maybe I'll just buy TF2 off of steam. While not really an MMO it does have that social aspect, and it is a kickass game apparently. Are they making a third one?

evony? no. Florensia? what the hell is that?

mechquest? the name is too retarded to even click...

runescape levels 92 to 99 takes the same amount of xp as 1-92. until you get a 99 skill you don't know what level grinding is.

and you only lose all your items/money if you carry it with you all the time, that's what the bank is for. although I admit the free part isn't very good at all.

Also keep in mind that they don't necessarily have to be RPG's. They just need to be fun, and have some kind of social aspect.

I did try Gaia Online once, but the online community there is pretty retarded.

yeah my highest skill is 83, and try going afk and losing 5+ mil to stupid randoms

Team Fortress 2 was under development for over a decade. So no. Valve is concentrating on updating TF2 rather than rolling out a sequel. The Orange Box is $30 at EA's store so get it there and use their $20 off $39.95 or more coupon: http://www.ea.com/games/the-orange-box

Coupon is PAXEAST842. Just add a game worth $10 as filler or add a $20 game and essentially receive it free. Team Fortress 2 is the shooter of this generation. Absolutely outclasses everything else. You need to get the PC version though.

You can also look at Guild Wars.

Thanks for the info. Any ideas on what I should add as the filler game? Preferably something fun.

I read up on TF2. Spy sounds so awesome. I want to disguise myself as the enemy and ambush them!

Actually I'm not so sure. How well would it run on my laptop?

2.10 Ghz processor.
2007 MB of RAM.

Depends on your video card. What model is your laptop? As for filler, what consoles do you own and again, what is your laptop model?

I found a free Digimon MMORPG, which is neat if you're a Digimon fan.It was just released in North America, but it was released in Korea in around 2005 so it might look a little dated and it's in its beta stage right now. So if you want to check that out go ahead.

Edit: NVM, it turns out to be a giant grind-fest. If I wanted this, I would play Dusk.

For TF2, I got it, but it crashes whenever i try to join something. I think it's the video card as my computer lags whenever I play Portal. So if you have an Intel Integrated card (lol I know it's shit) you won't be able to play TF2.

A couple that hasn't been mentioned:

Guild Wars: Never played, but is free to play, just have to buy the games.
Diablo 2: Again, just buy'n'play. If you are into hack'n'slash, you will be hooked. I had never played when I got this game, and was hooked for 1.5 years straight. And there are still thousands of players who play this game, so the social aspect is there. Should be cheap too: In Norway, the pack with Classic+expansion costs about 250 NOK, which is about 25 euros (don't know about US or other countries).

TF2 the shooter of this gen?
That's a little much, considering CoD4 outclasses every shooter ever.

On topic, you should look at Guild Wars, it's pretty solid.

This is what I currently have:

I think it won't work as it seems that I have the same video card, but you laptop is a different model than mine so I don't know.

Maybe I'll just go back to MapleStory -_- ... that's probably all this computer can handle.

Or maybe I'll just wait for FFXIV to come out for the PS3.

I keep seeing ads for a Pokemon MMORPG.

You could take a look at The Mana World. Small community, but nice game. Decent sized world to explore, with some pretty mazy areas. You do spend a fair bit of time grinding, but it seems like that's common with most free MMOs. You also heal by staying still, so you might end up waiting a fair bit - but that does make it a good game for playing while doing something else, especially as there's little (if any?) PvP and many monsters leave you alone unless you attack them. Have a notepad handy because the game doesn't give you indication of what quests you're on. (I've forgotten my username and pw, so unless I guess it I probably won't be able to meet you ingame).

Guild Wars was a game I used to play. I really enjoyed it, and you only have to buy the games, not pay monthly. However, you're kinda handicapped when playing if you don't buy the expansions as well. However, the game and 2 major expansions won't run you more than 80 dollars, I would imagine.

There wasn't much grinding in that game, (Max level was 20) which was very appealing. There whole point was that it didn't matter how much time you played, you could still be good at the game. It wasn't spectacularly easy to get to level 20, but it wasn't repetitive either.
