Rofl, lemme bow before this guy, I've seen a HG/SS solo run with sunkern but magikarp is on a whole new level, now may i wonder, is it even possible to solo run HG/SS until red with sunkern solely, or any non-legendary or pseudo legendary for that matter? (without using items of course)

Since the Gold speedrun uses Feraligatr to do the whole game, I'd think so. The HG/SS speedrun's Red fight is really messy and uses a ton of items, I know. But throughout the whole game you skip a large amount of trainers. By fighting all the trainers, you'd be able to break level 80 with any non-legendary, any maybe more than that. I know I had a level 84 Raticate when I soloed Fire Red with him, and that was still with trainers skipped on the water routes.

So if you're willing to grind, anything's possible. Though even at level 100 with items I doubt a Magikarp could survive a single hit from Pikachu's Thunder :/
