Gastly (Analysis)

Gastly has great Speed and Special Attack, but is held back by poor defences. It has 3 great immunities—Normal, Fighting, and Ground—(dashes)which let Gastly switch in easily and compensate for its low defenses. Most common priority moves, including Fake Out, Quick Attack, and Extremespeed, are of these types, allowing Gastly to make the best use of its excellent Speed. Its immunities to various priority moves such as Fake Out, Quick Attack, ExtremeSpeed, Despite being slower and frailer than Misdreavus, Gastly's higher Special Attack and Poison typing can give it the upper hand in certain situations.

[SET COMMENTS]

This is Gastly's most effective set due to its ability to switch in easily on one of its many immunities and set up a Substitute. Behind This is Gastly's most effective set, since it can Gastly can easily apply pressure to the opponent, easily setting up Substitute thanks to its many immunities. From behind a Substitute Gastly can hit the opponent with the most appropriate move, causing large amounts of damage and sometimes even KOing The opponent will usually take large amounts of damage getting hit from Gastly behind the Substitute as they try to break it, and in some cases, will even be KOed before breaking it. Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting give unresisted coverage and hit most Pokemon very hard. Sludge Bomb has poor coverage, but it is more powerful than Shadow Ball, and can be useful for extra damage against Pokemon that are neutral to both moves. Oran Berry recovers some health that you will lose from setting up Substitutes.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
RE-WROTE THIS BECAUSE IT WAS A BIT DISJOINTED ( this is understandable given that you are just listing alternative options, but still)

In the third slot, Hidden Power Ice and Hidden Power Fire are options, OHKOing Gligar and Ferroseed respectively, but otherwise these offer little coverage, Ferroseed being 2HKOed by Hidden Power Fighting anyway. As for the last slot, there is a large variety of options, including Will-O-wisp, which can cripple physical Pokemon such as Gligar and Munchlax, and Hypnosis, which can be useful, despite its terrible accuracy, in dealing with opponents that normally beat Gastly. Pain Split is also a decent option in order to recover HP lost from using Substitute, and works well when using Life Orb, which can be used for extra power; be warned, however – the residual damage will add up fast.

move 1: Shadow Ball
move 2: Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Ice
move 3: Sludge Bomb
move 4: Trick
Hidden Power Fighting 2HKO's it anyway. A lot of alternatives can be used in the last slot. Will-O-Wisp can be used to cripple physical pokes, notably Gligar and Munchlax, who give Gastly a hard time. Pain Split is viable because Gastly loses alot of health due to Substitute, and sometimes Life Orb. Hypnosis, with it
item: Choice Scarf

[SET COMMENTS]

Because of its higher Special Attack Gastly
makes a better is usually superior to Misdreavus when running a Choice Scarf set Scarfer than Misdreavus because of its higher Special Attack. It can use its 3 immunities as to gain opportunities to come in, or switch in after a KO, and dish out powerful attacks. Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting provide perfect neutral coverage. Sludge Bomb is a great third move, packing. It has more power than Shadow Ball, and should be used against Pokemon who are neutral to both Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting. Trick can be used to cripple enemy Pokemon with an unwanted Choice Scarf.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Hidden Power Ice can be used to OHKO Gligar. A Modest nature should be used if you want to hit harder. There is myriad of alternative moves that can be used in the last slot. Gligar poses a threat to Gastly, but can be easily dealt with through Hidden Power Ice, or can be crippled by Will-o-Wisp, which helps to cripple a great range of physical attackers. can burn incoming Munchlax, or Gligar if you don't have Hidden Power Ice. Hypnosis can be used to put a troublesome Pokemon out of action, perhaps for the remainder of the match to sleep (a bit obvious lol). Explosion can be used to go out with a bang, even though Although it has lost a lot of its power this generation, Explosion can also be used to go out with a bang, hitting Pokemon that can take your special attacks hard.

[Other Options]

Hidden Power Fire can be used instead of Hidden Power Fighting to OHKO Ferroseed. Pain Split can be used on the Substitute set as it loses health quickly thanks to
because of Substitute and Life Orb. Although it has terrible accuracy, Hypnosis is an option. It is always useful to have a member of the opponent's team asleep. If you use it while your opponent switches into a slower, bulky Pokemon, Gastly normally has two shots with it, which increases the odds of it hitting once. Although it has lost considerable power in this generation, Explosion can still be used if you want to go out with a bang; not every Pokemon carries Evolution Stone. Sucker Punch is Gastly's most powerful priority attack, which can come in useful against frail, faster Pokemon, such as Abra, Misdreavus, Staryu, and other Gastly.

[Checks and Counters]

Pokemon that outspeed Gastly will give it a hard time
(remove space). Gligar, Misdreavus, and Diglet are all examples of fast, troublesome opponents. Any priority move that Gastly is not immune to is trouble. Croagunk and or Houndour with Sucker Punch, Meditite with Bullet Punch, Buizel with Aqua Jet, and Duskull with Shadow Sneak are all considerable threats to Ghastly. Munchlax is a big problem for Gastly as he is immune to Shadow Ball, sponges his other attacks fairly well, and threatens to trap Gastly with Pursuit. The best Gastly can do is burn Munchlax or put it to sleep, but the low accuracy of its status moves makes them very risky options. Lickitung sets up on Gastly, because Sludge Bomb and Hidden Power Fighting only 3HKO it. It can get 2 Curses and then Rest off the damage. Pawniard also beats threatens Gastly with either Pursuit or Sucker Punch, but. (add space) Gastly can OHKO it on the switch-in with Hidden Power Fighting. Scraggy is a great partner because it can set up on Munchlax, Lickitung and Pawniard. They cover each other's weaknesses too. Timburr can also make a good teammate, setting up. It can set-up on Pawniard because it threatens to OHKO. Timburr can also counter Carvanha, which beats Gastly.
(should this not go in the additional comments, along with a small counters section?)

[Dream World]

Unfortunately, poor Gastly gets nothing from the Dream World.

GP check 2

Im not sure this is really done - there is no mention of team options anywhere except in the counters section, which is a bit odd. You need to incude counters and team options specific to each set in the additional comments. If you make any changes let me know so I can go over them

Again, make sure there aren't any spacing errors in the analysis.

Sort of a minor nitpick, but I think Sludge Bomb should be replaced (or at least slashed) with Thunderbolt due to handle Water types better and having generally better coverage.

I want to see this slash as well with Thunderbolt as the primary option. The difference in base power between Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb isn't worth the terrible coverage.

Apparently I'm double posting, but it was over two weeks ago so I'm okay with that.

You only need 36 HP evs on Gastly for that extra point. The other 32 are unnecessary.

On the substitute set, don't you still want to run 0 HP EVs so that your HP is 19, so that subs only cost 4HP and LO only costs 1?
