Media General Music Discussion Thread

A genre I have found myself venturing into a lot recently is early alternative. It really amazes me how much influence artists like Lou Reed have had over the years, and I personally believe reed to be the most underrated musician of all time. I have friends who are not really fans of alternative who say that these songs are very acceptable, and I'd agree with that assessment tbh. some good examples are Pale Blue Eyes by the Velvet Underground, Perfect Day - Lou Reed, Life On Mars - David Bowie (dodgy whether that's alternative though), Oh Sweet Nuthin' - The Velvet Undeground and Lust for Life -Iggy Pop are all incredibly enjoyable to listen to in my opinion. If you're the type of person who prefers to listen to albums rather than individual songs, I'd recommend Loaded - The Velvet Underground and Transformer - Lou Reed as very good and very accessible early alternative albums. Transformer probably features all the best known alternative of the time, such as Satellite of Love and Take a Walk on the Wild Side.
Ah, very nice to see another Bowie fan here! Life On Mars is one of my favourite songs. And I also love the other songs/albums you mentioned.

Aladdin Sane is one of my favourite albums ever. But yeah, I love all Bowie albums, aside from the commercialist Let's Dance era.

Question for all people posting here... What's your favourite song? Why is it special to you?

To me, Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen.

As a child, I used to hate music. I only heard crappy pop songs and hated it. Dance, rap and hiphop. Fine if people like it, but not my thing. But anyways, I thought music wasn't for me. Until I found Bohemian Rhapsody by pure coincidence on YouTube when I was twelve or thirteen (26 now). I was blown away. This song made this former music hater a music addict.

I quickly became a Queen fan, especially loving their hard rock stuff. Not so much into the poppy '80's songs. And through Queen, I got into David Bowie, Motörhead, Mott The Hoople, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, Soundgarden, Metallica, Rainbow, Foo Fighters and many others. Queen was a perfect bridge from classic rock to heavy metal to me.

Now, I love rock in lots of subgenres, from the sixties to our current time. But Queen will always be my favourite band, and Bohemian Rhapsody will always be my favourite song. It shaped my taste in music, and got me into music in the first place.

Gone and preordered Gorillaz's Song Machine album, it's shaping up to be one of their best so far ngl. The Pink Phantom and Desolè have been my favourites so far, but everything hits in some way.

One of the best recent finds I’ve made in my quest to attain peak weeb is a band called Necry Talkie (ネクライトーキー). They’re on Spotify, so make sure to give their albums ‘ONE!’ and ‘ZOO!!’ a listen.

My preorder of Song Machine arrived today, very late but that's ok. I ordered the deluxe CD and those tapes you could get on the side.

For some reason, they sent the vinyl with all this too, which I didn't ask for. Guess I'll frame it and have it on my wall LMFAO

Valley of the Pagans is every bit as good as I thought it'd be. God this is definitely one of Gorillaz's best yet.

This guy on Youtube has been editing some classic freestyles with his own beats and they are really good. I'll share some of my favourites.
