Golett
QC: Elevator Music, Shiny Azlef [2/2]
GP:kc4444/NixHex, Calm Pokemaster [2/2]

[Overview]

One of the four new Ghost-types introduced in Generation V, Golett stands out as the only physical attacker. It sports a decent 74 base Attack and acceptable 59 / 50 / 50 defenses with a unique Ground / Ghost typing, giving it three immunities. Sadly, this slow golem faces stiff competition from its fellow Ghost-types for a team slot due to its many common weaknesses and low Speed, often causing it to be overlooked. However, with the good coverage its movepool gives it and a STAB Earthquake that 2HKOs most things that do not resist it, this little golem should be taken lightly.

[SET]
name: Rock Polish
move 1: Rock Polish
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Brick Break
move 4: Rock Slide / Return
item: Life Orb
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Jolly
evs: 244 Atk / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Despite its low base Speed, Golett reaches 28 Speed after a single Rock Polish, allowing it to outspeed every unboosted sweeper under normal conditions. Earthquake is Golett's most powerful STAB move and deals heavy damage to anything that does not resist it. Brick Break gives it additional coverage and allows Golett to shatter the opponent's dual screens. Rock Slide enhances Golett's coverage, hitting Bug- and Flying-type threats for super effective damage. Return is also an option over Rock Slide, and while it doesn't provide any additional super effective coverage, it gives Golett a powerful neutral attack that hits a wide range of threats hard.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread is very straightforward, maximizing Golett's Attack and Speed, while a Jolly nature boosts its Speed. Iron Fist is the preferred ability, as it further boosts the power of Brick Break in conjunction with Life Orb. If you decide to use Ice Beam over Rock Slide, you should note that Golett will be walled by Levitating Ghost- and Bug-types. Whichever option you choose, Golett's teammates should be able to support it by taking out its counters, specifically those who threaten it with super effective attacks. Houndour, Joltik, and Scraggy all take out at least two of the types that Golett fears. Teammates that are weak to Fighting- and Electric-type attacks can also give Golett room to switch in and set up.

There are very few opponents who can safely switch into even a neutral STAB Earthquake, but Ferroseed can easily take two hits and strike back with Bullet Seed. Bronzor can also switch into Earthquake and threaten Golett with Hidden Power Ice. Both of them can even take a Brick Break, so it is best to remove these threats before Golett switches in.

[SET]
name: Trick Room Sweeper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Brick Break
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Ice Beam / Return
item: Life Orb
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Brave
evs: 124 HP / 244 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD
ivs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Though less reliable than the Rock Polish set, Golett is also capable of running a Trick Room set. Once again, Earthquake is its only STAB move that can 2HKO most foes neutral to it with the exception of Ferroseed. Brick Break prevents dual screens from ruining Golett's fun against non-Ghost-types and is also powered up by Iron Fist. Unlike with a Rock Polish set, Golett does not have to choose between Rock Slide and Ice Beam, and can run both, giving it the ability to beat Hippopotas without sacrificing coverage. However, Return hits several Pokemon neutrally and it is a good move to have for coverage, meriting its use over Ice Beam if Hippopotas is not an issue.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

It should be noted that under Trick Room, Golett is outsped by Slowpoke, Solosis, Ferroseed, and Bronzor, who can all dispose of it with a super effective move. Golett's teammates should be able to switch into these attacks, so Munchlax can work as an excellent partner to wall special attacks under Trick Room. Timburr can also take Dark-type attacks aimed at Golett, but it also has trouble with Ghost-types. Ironically, the same enemies that are the bane of Golett's existence under Trick Room can function as effective partners, specifically Ferroseed, Slowpoke, and Bronzor, who each resist at least two types that are super effective against Golett. In addition, Bronzor and Slowpoke can set up Trick Room for the robot. Slowpoke can switch in multiple times with its ability Regenerator, whilst Bronzor can assist Golett's sweep by laying down Stealth Rock.

[Other Options]

Golett doesn't have many other options aside from Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Low Sweep, Gyro Ball, and Return, half of which are special moves. Brick Break is superior to Low Sweep and Focus Blast, while Hidden Power is useless due to Golett's access to Ice Beam. Hidden Power Fire is an option to hit Ferroseed and Bronzor, but Golett usually loses to both regardless. Gyro Ball and Return are both powerful moves, but using them causes Golett to lose coverage. A Choice set could be considered, but due to its many common weaknesses, the automaton does not appreciate being locked into one move and can be easily revenge killed or Pursuited while switching out.

[Checks and Counters]

Even though robots are not supposed to have emotions, this one cowers in fear of priority users. Zorua, Pawniard, and Stunky can all hit Golett hard with Sucker Punch, while Snover can dispose of it with Ice Shard. Scraggy can also take a super effective Brick Break and retaliate with Crunch or Ice Punch. Ferroseed and Bronzor, again, wall Golett and deal heavy damage with Bullet Seed and Hidden Power Ice, respectively.

The Rock Polish set can be countered depending on the choice between Rock Slide and Ice Beam. Without Ice Beam, Hippopotas can set up in front of it, and without Rock Slide, Golett cannot deal with Levitating Ghost- and Bug-types. Gastly and Duskull can come in on an Earthquake or Brick Break and easily shrug off Ice Beam while KOing Golett with their STAB Ghost-type attacks.

[Dream World]

Golett receives No Guard from the Dream World, but it is currently not released. Sadly, Golett does not have access to DynamicPunch in Little Cup, thus making No Guard useless even if it were to be released. Iron Fist is always the better ability.

Rock Slide prevents Bug-types and Flying-types [Hyphen added] from walling it while hitting them for super effective damage. Ice Beam is an option over Rock Slide to allow Golett to beat Gligar one-on-one, but it generally provides inferior coverage.

Iron Fist is the Golett's most useful ability to maximize Brick Break's power in conjunction with Life Orb. A Jolly nature should always be used to maximize Speed. as eEven without any Special Attack investment and a hindering nature, Golett will almost always OHKO Eviolite Gligar with Ice Beam.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you decide to use Ice beam over Rock Slide, you should note that Golett will be walled by Levitating Ghost-types and Bug-types. Contrarily, Gligar can easily dispose of Golett if it lacks Ice Beam.

Brick Break is superior to Low Sweep and Focus Blast while Hidden Power is useless due to Golett's ability to learn Ice Beam. Hidden Power Fire is an option to hit Ferroseed and Bronzor, but Golett usually loses to both regardless. Gyro Ball and Return are both high damaging moves, but using them causes Golett it to lose coverage. A Choice set could be considered, but due to its many common weaknesses, the automaton does not appreciate being locked into one move and can be easily revenge killed or Pursuited while switching out.

[Checks and Counters]

Even with all the power Golett has with Rock Polish or under Trick Room, there are many ways to counter it. Even though robots are not supposed to have emotions, this one cowers in fear of priority users. Zorua, Pawniard, and Stunky can all hit Golett hard with Sucker Punch while Snover and Carvanha can dispose of it with Ice Shard or Aqua Jet. Scraggy can also take a super effective Brick Break and put retaliate with Crunch or Ice Punch.
The Rock Polish set can be countered depending on the choice between Rock Slide and Ice Beam. Without Ice Beam, Gligar can set up in front of it, but without Rock Slide, Golett cannot deal with Levitating Ghosts and Bug-types. Misdreavus, Gastly, and Duskull can come in on an Earthquake or Brick Break and easily shrug off Ice Beam. Gligar, however, is one of the most common physical wall in Little Cup, so the choice is often difficult.

[Dream World]

Golett receives No Guard from the Dream World, but is currently not released. Normally, this would be very useful for it, but Golett does not have access to Dynamicpunch in Little Cup, thus making it useless and cannot afford to give the opponents the extra advantage. Iron Fist should always be used.

one nitpick:
Sadly, this slow golem faces stiff competition from its fellow Ghost-types for a team slot due to its many common weaknesses and low speed, often causing it to be overlooked.
Otherwise...

Oh, and I'm assuming Ice Beam was on the set simply for hitting Gligar? If so, you may want to remove it if it doesn't offer any extra coverage. Like SuperJOCKE, i don't play LC so it's up to you.

You spelled my name wrong xD

Whoops...looks like I forgot to remove mention of Gligar from this before I handed it over... Oh, well anyway, even though Ice Beam was used primarily for Gligar, there really isn't much else that can fit into that fourth slot, unless you want to use Return, so I'd probably just slash it instead of Ice Beam on the first set and slash it with Ice Beam on the second one.
