Halo Reach (beta May 3rd!)

With just less than ten days till the Reach Beta, how much are you looking forward to this game?

Voice your opinions on what you think looks good, or what you are unsure of, before it is confirmed May 3rd!

Well I'm pretty excited. I'm itching to see how the elite plays, they were always way cooler. too bad they never got much attention in terms of customization in Halo 3 but now Elites and Spartans are very different. I also see ideas from other successful games, which is a damn good idea. I'm having trouble thinking of anything that I might be unsure of, it looks extremely fun and I can't wait.

The thing that I always loved about Halo was how when the game began, everyone and everything was generally even. In Halo: Reach, since armor has an actual effect on you, this is no longer the case. Thus, I'm really not looking forward to it :(

I hope to god it's balanced, it seems like their could be so many things that could be horribly broken (or in the case of some perks, completely inferior to something else). Nervous, in a word.

@Oof
I don't think that halo has been balanced since hce. I wouldn't mind a return to that kind of balance though, where a shotgun vs assault rifle was a fair fight at midrange or where the pistol could beat something.

What does the range of a shotgun have to do with balance? What I was saying was when you spawn, everyone is even. For instance, you have the same weapons, shields, and speed. Picking up a shotgun and attempting to fight mid-range with it does not make a game unbalanced, it simply means that you made a poor decision.

I thought you were talking about the weapons being balanced (ie: a shotgun v assault rifle being a fair fight at midrange).

this series is going on far too long. something today with modern games reeks of cash outs. everything must have a sequel. then another sequel. and every subsequent sequel seems to get shittier and shittier until it has reached a complete level of unoriginal drivel (i.e. Guitar Hero and basically anything and everything published by Activision). and then if the cesspool of the series couldn't get any worse another sequel comes out.

now that blatantly harsh criticism of the gaming industry doesn't exactly equate to how I feel about Halo yet, but the series has done nothing interesting since Halo 2 (which was already sub par compared to the original) so these sequels seem to do nothing but feed a wild flock of Halo fanboys.

I'll obviously be met with criticism and insults of my own assessment (as to be expected when one walks in on a discussion and disagrees entirely) so take your shots! :P it won't change my opinion.

Personally, my main concern with this game as far as I can see, are the new assassination animations. Surely the whole idea of sneaking up on a team and "backsmacking" them is completely gone, and any good player can just call out, "I'm being assassinated!" and they're teammates can rush right over kill you mid-animation. I do hope they encorporate some sort of non-animated backsmack alongside the animations, because as awesome as they look, they don't look practical in a position with numerous players.

The one problem I have with Halo, is that Bungie can't do chronology right.

Every time there's a game in the past (see Halo: Wars and now Halo: Reach) they somehow have new human and covenant technologies in them (see the Vultures from Wars and now those Helicopter things and the Needle Rifle from Reach) but yet, in Halo 3 etc, these weapons are nowhere to be found.
It's not really like ruining the game, it just irritates me.

Also, I hope they don't make some stupid huge open ended plot hole and sort it out by having the Flood kill everyone like they did in every other game. It just makes them feel cheap and like they couldn't be bothered ending them properly.

Onto the proper gameplay, I seriously hope it's been improved since ODST. I bought it for the Halo 3 multiplayer mainly, but I thought I'd give the campaign a go, God am I happy I didn't pay full price. Despite it apparently being "stealthy", it still ended with you jumping around like an idiot with a needler and spraying until everyone dies. I'm fine with the campaign modes on Halo games, I just don't like it when apparently it's been revamped but it's exactly the same.

I've already got my "Halo: Reach (for a different game)" pun ready for if it sucks ;)

Uh, the story for Halo Reach is already known. It has been known for a very long time. It's referenced to in past Halo games and there's even an entire novel about the events that we're going to play. You won't have to worry about an open-ended plothole.

Ahh, of course. Forgot about the books.

Well at least that's one thing they can't upset me with.

I doubt I'll be getting it (if at all) until it becomes cheaper though. Unless it's getting +95% scores everywhere. Not after the upset that was ODST.

I think it's something like press b once to backsmash, double tap b (or hold) to assassinate.

You have to consider that ODST wasn't made as complete game, more of an overly expensive expansion pack just so you could play new maps. With Reach there will be all the features that Halo 3 has, and most likely more.

pretty sure I read somewhere that back-melees won't be instant kills anymore, but will rather do the same damage as a normal melee and thus possibly making the assassinations useful.

I just recently got into halo, when i saw a video about all the new things in the beta i was stunned. Theres some good stuff and some bad stuff wich i will have to wait and see so i can determine if im going to get the game. I cant wait for the beta

Playing the beta right now.

=]
Are the load outs preset (like TeamFortress) or are there different archetypes (like battlefield bc2) or is it completely customizable (like cod)?

Edit: More important question: How?

yeah, i played about two hours of it today too. things of interest to note

the magnum is superior to the dmr and needle rifle.
none of the armour abilities are really game breaking...if anything jet pack is because of added strafing/flanking is the best

also, loadouts are preset

It's not to bad just wait a little bit. I would have done it, but I was to lazy to fill out the form thing, and I've got to much shit to do by monday, so it's probably for the best that I don't get it.

GAH, finally got through all the other people signing up and it's closed. Oh well, Monday isn't that far away.

Surprised their hasn't been mores posts in this thread. Mines still downloading, has been for about three hours.
