[SET]
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Magma Storm
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Toxic / Stealth Rock
item: Leftovers
ability: Flash Fire
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
With its combination of great natural bulk, uncontested utility options, and a useful ability in Flash Fire, Heatran cements itself as an exemplary stallbreaker and blanket check of the CAP metagame. Courtesy of its high Special Defense, Heatran is able to check prominent special attackers such as Dragapult, Zapdos, and Tapu Lele; furthermore, due to its typing and ability, it completely walls Pokemon like Clefable and Volcarona. Magma Storm allows Heatran to trap and chip bulky Water-types such as Slowbro and Toxapex, as well as specially defensive titans like Blissey and Galarian Slowking. Taunt prevents these walls from recovering their health or, in Slowbro and Blissey's cases, from using Teleport, ensuring that Heatran effectively wears them down over time and eventually KOs them. Earth Power super-effectively damages opposing Heatran, as well as Astrolotl and Krilowatt, relatively common switch-ins to it. Toxic and Stealth Rock are interchangeable in the last moveslot, though the former is usually preferred to wear down particularly sturdy answers to Heatran in Gastrodon and Swampert. However, Heatran is still an effective Stealth Rock setter, forcing out a common Defogger in Corviknight.

Heatran relies on Leftovers for recovery; therefore, Knock Off absorbers like Clefable and Corviknight make for excellent teammates. The latter is especially notable for switching in on common Ground-types like Landorus-T and Hippowdon with impunity. Landorus-T itself is also an effective Heatran partner, switching into Garchomp and freeing it up to run Toxic. It is essential to pair Heatran with defensive Water-types such as Toxapex and Slowbro, as they wall Galarian Zapdos, Venomicon-E, and Urshifu-R, which easily OHKO Heatran. Toxapex in particular also matches up very well against Buzzwole. Additionally, offensive Grass-types like Jumbao and Rillaboom make for amazing partners; Jumbao and Heatran each resist every type the other is weak to, while Rillaboom's Grassy Terrain not only significantly weakens Earthquake, but also provides Heatran with an additional source of much-needed recovery. Weavile comes in on and immediately threatens the aforementioned Ground-type checks, as well as Dragon-types that Heatran struggles against such as Dragonite and Pajantom. Lastly, Dragapult and Blacephalon greatly appreciate Heatran chipping Landorus-T and Colossoil.

[SET]
name: Balloon Frog
move 1: Magma Storm
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Eruption
move 4: Stealth Rock
item: Air Balloon / Leftovers
ability: Flash Fire
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
With this set, Heatran sacrifices its bulk to heavily damage some of its typical switch-ins, scoring a 2HKO on specially defensive Landorus-T with Eruption when at full health, and nearly on uninvested Slowbro too. Air Balloon dissuades Landorus-T from switching into Heatran even more, as well as shutting down Astrolotl and opposing Heatran while intact. While Leftovers could also be run, Air Balloon is almost always superior here for its exclusive ability to practically invalidate checks and enable more offensive progress than usual. Magma Storm lets Heatran trap and chip its switch-ins, in addition to providing a strong attack even when Heatran is at low HP, which drastically reduces Eruption's power. Earth Power helps wear down switch-ins like Tapu Fini, Toxapex, and Garchomp more quickly and provides coverage against opposing Fire-types. A Timid nature can be considered for outspeeding Adamant Swords Dance Rillaboom, but it is generally useless outside of this benchmark.

Heatran loses out on added bulk when running this set; as a result, it becomes more vulnerable to special attackers like Dragapult and Tapu Koko. Therefore, Equilibra and Landorus-T make for great partners, walling the latter and matching up well into the former, especially if they choose to run more Special Defense investment. A Bulky Water-type, especially physically defensive Toxapex or standard Slowbro, makes for an invaluable, mandatory Heatran teammate, effectively checking massive threats to it in Galarian Zapdos and Urshifu-R. Offensive Electric- and Grass-types like Tapu Koko, Zeraora, Kartana, and Rillaboom switch into and force out Pokemon Heatran struggles against, such as Toxapex, Tapu Fini, and Slowking. It is also a good idea to pair Heatran with Dragapult or Blacephalon, as they form a potent special wallbreaking core together, greatly pressuring their shared checks in Toxapex and Tapu Fini. Choice Specs Blacephalon in particular can swiftly dispose of certain bulky Water-types that Heatran cannot, especially Arghonaut and Slowbro. Lastly, a defensive Grass-type in Ferrothorn provides extra security against Water-types in general.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
====

Heatran has a variety of other options at its disposal. It can run Heavy Slam on both its offensive and defensive set to more reliably KO certain Fairy-type foes it has trapped, such as Clefable and Tapu Lele. Heavy Slam also more reliably defeats Pokemon like Weavile, Blissey, and Galarian Slowking, but its other options are better in more scenarios. Heatran can also run Protect on its defensive set to scout Choice item users, gain a turn of Leftovers recovery, and rack up status damage, but dropping Toxic means it will be unable to status foes itself. Although more niche, Will-O-Wisp cripples Landorus-T and Garchomp on the switch. Flame Body over Flash Fire invalidates Jumbao as a counter, as it relies on Trace, while also potentially punishing U-turn users in Dragapult, Tapu Koko, and Corviknight, but dropping Flash Fire means that Heatran cannot reliably check Volcarona.

Checks and Counters
====

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Specially bulky Pokemon such as Venomicon and Galarian Slowking can switch into Heatran while taking minimal damage and proceed to threaten it with Earth Power and Earthquake, respectively. Venomicon can be easily chipped, however, while Galarian Slowking's Earthquake is only strong enough to 2HKO Heatran. Jumbao uses Trace and its Ground resistance to wall Flash Fire Heatran, but rare Flame Body sets heavily damage it with Fire-type moves, and Toxic cripples it.

**Ground-types**: Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Hippowdon can all come in on Heatran and threaten to OHKO it with Earthquake, thereby immediately forcing it out. The latter is especially notable for having reliable recovery in Slack Off. However, none of these Pokemon appreciate getting hit with Toxic. Colossoil deserves special mention here for receiving a power boost if hit with Toxic on the switch, thanks to Guts.

**Bulky Water-types**: Arghonaut, Slowbro, Tapu Fini, Swampert, and Shed Shell Toxapex can all easily switch into Heatran and damage it with super effective moves. The former two dislike being poisoned and have to be careful of getting worn down too quickly, though. While Gastrodon is more niche, it deserves special mention here for having access to Recover and immediately forcing Heatran out with Earthquake.

**Bulky Dragon-types**: Dragonite and Pajantom are both amazing answers to Heatran. The former takes little to nothing from Magma Storm, is immune to Earth Power, can heal off Toxic with Heal Bell, and has Roost to recover any lost HP. The latter is immune to Toxic thanks to Comatose and threatens an OHKO on Heatran with Earthquake. Astrolotl can switch into non-Air Balloon Heatran and threaten it with Stomping Tantrum.

**Offensive Fighting-types**: Galarian Zapdos and Urshifu-R cannot consistently switch into Heatran, but they force it out with strong, super effective STAB moves.

imo the second set should be this:

name: Offensive Trapper
move 1: Magma Storm
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Eruption
move 4: Stealth Rock
item: Air Balloon / Leftovers
ability: Flash Fire
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Air Balloon is absolutely amazing in a meta where SpD tran and Astro are everywhere, also making lando a not-safe switch-in is pretty amazing

With its combination of great natural bulk, uncontested utility options, and a useful ability in Flash Fire, Heatran cements itself as an exemplary stallbreaker and blanket check of the CAP metagame. Courtesy of its high Special Defense, Heatran is able to check prominent special attackers such as Dragapult, Zapdos, and Tornadus-T Tapu Lele (doesn't actually check torn cause of Knock, lele is the relevant one since it has picked up in popularity so much); furthermore, due to its typing and ability, it completely walls Pokemon like Clefable and Volcarona. Heatran is also an effective Stealth Rock setter, forcing out a commonly seen Defogger in Corviknight. Magma Storm allows Heatran to trap and deal chip damage to bulky Water-types such as Slowbro and Toxapex, as well as specially defensive titans like Blissey and Galarian Slowking. Taunt prevents these walls from recovering their health or, in Slowbro and Blissey's cases, from using Teleport, ensuring that Heatran effectively wears them down over time and eventually knocks them out. Earth Power gives Heatran the means to super-effectively damage opposing Heatran, as well as Astrolotl, a relatively common switch-in to it. (Earth Power also notably hits Chomp and Dragapult neutrally, which can help from time to time) The last moveslot is interchangeable between Toxic and Stealth Rock, though the former is usually preferred to wear down particularly sturdy answers to Heatran in Gastrodon and Swampert. 120 Speed EVs allow Heatran to outspeed maximum Speed neutral-natured Magnezone and Aegislash, in addition to uninvested Landorus-T, with the rest after HP invested in Special Defense to more potently check Dragapult and Tornadus-T. A Calm nature further bolsters Heatran's role as a specially defensive check.

Heatran has no reliable recovery outside of Leftovers; therefore, Knock Off absorbers like Clefable and Corviknight make for excellent teammates. The latter is especially notable for its ability to easily switch in on common Ground-types like Landorus-T and Hippowdon, which it is not threatened by whatsoever. Additionally, offensive Grass-types like Jumbao and Rillaboom make for amazing partners with Heatran; Jumbao and Heatran each resist every type the other is weak to, while Rillaboom's Grassy Terrain not only significantly decreases the power of Earthquake, but also provides Heatran with an additional source of much-needed recovery besides Leftovers. Strong Ice-types like Weavile and Syclant also make for good Heatran teammates, coming in on and immediately threatening the aforementioned Ground-types as well as Dragon-types that Heatran struggles against such as Dragonite and Pajantom. (must mention pairing Heatran with Water resists like Toxapex and Slowbro, otherwise Urshifu runs you down. The two also help against Gapdos and Buzzwole. Lando helps deal with opposing Ground-types and can free tran to not run Stealth Rock. Colo is another option that isnt as good at toxicing grounds but is good at checking Dragapult, taking some of the burden off tran's back. Dragapult and Blacephalon are other teammates that needs to be mentioned, as they appreciate tran chipping SpD mons like Lando and Colo and it heavy chipping melm.)

[SET]
name: Offensive Trapper Balloon Frog (he do be hoppin. actually tho, this is the name of the set)
move 1: Magma Storm
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Eruption
move 4: Stealth Rock
item: Air Balloon / Leftovers
ability: Flash Fire

[SET COMMENTS]
With this more offensive set, Heatran sacrifices its bulk in return for being able to significantly damage some of its typical switch-ins, scoring a 2HKO on specially defensive Landorus-T with Eruption when at full health, and chunking uninvested Slowbro for nearly half. Air Balloon is what makes this set particularly appealing, letting Heatran completely wall the aforementioned Landorus-T (it doesn't wall lando insomuch as it forces it to U-turn. really what balloon does is make lando a non-safe switch-in. i think that is worth clarifying), Astrolotl, and other Heatran for as long as it remains on the field without being damaged. While Leftovers could also be run for a source of passive recovery, Air Balloon is almost always superior for its exclusive ability to practically invalidate Heatran's checks and allow Heatran to make more offensive progress than usual in a game. Magma Storm lets Heatran trap and deal chip to its switch-ins. (It is also just a powerful Fire-type move once Eruption loses its power) Earth Power helps wear them down quicker and provides coverage against opposing Fire-types. (Earth Power does a lot more than that, as is noted in the first set. Be specific with examples (Pex, Fini, Chomp)) Stealth Rock deals damage to opposing Pokemon as they come into battle. The given EV spread along with a Timid nature makes Heatran hit both hard and fast, though a Modest nature can also be considered to maximize Heatran's offensive capabilities. (mention modest first, stating that it capitalizes on Eruption more. Timid is used to outspeed SD Rillaboom, which honest isn't super prevalent but is the reason to use it.)

Heatran loses out on added bulk when running this specific set; as a result, it becomes more vulnerable to special attackers like Dragapult and Tapu Koko. Therefore, Equilibra and Landorus-T makes for a great partners, walling the latter and matching up well into the former, especially if it chooses to run more Special Defense investment. Heatran wants to avoid losing its Air Balloon at all costs, so Knock Off absorbers like Clefable and Corviknight are good teammates. (balloon breaks on any hit, so this sentence doesn't mean much) Offensive Electric and Grass-types like Tapu Koko, Zeraora, Jumbao Kartana, and Rillaboom, respectively, pair well with Heatran, switching in on and threatening out Pokemon it struggles against like Toxapex, Tapu Fini, and Slowking. (again, water resists are super important. gapdos answers like bro and zap are needed as well. pult and blace again appreciate tran's breaking power. Blace in particular is super good with this set, as it forms a power fire-type breaking core that can power through fire resists like bro, fini, and pex. Ferro helps take some of the work to check lele and adds an additional water resist.)

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Heatran has a variety of other options at its disposal. With regard to its moves, it can run Heavy Slam on both its offensive and defensive set to more reliably KO certain Fairy-type opponents it has trapped, such as Clefable and Tapu Lele. (slam also hits weavile more consistently, and is helpful for koing Gking and Blissey once they are trapped) Heatran can also run Protect on its defensive set to scout Choice item users, gain a turn of Leftovers recovery, and rack up status damage, but dropping Toxic for it means it will be unable to status foes itself. Although more niche, Heatran can additionally make use of Will-O-Wisp to cripple Landorus-T and Garchomp on the switch. In terms of its ability, Heatran running Flame Body invalidates Jumbao as a counter and results in it being severely damaged by Heatran's Fire-type moves, but dropping Flash Fire for it means that Heatran cannot reliably check Volcarona. (Flame body also hard punishes U-turn users like Corviknight, Dragapult, Gapdos, Koko, etc. also helpful for a burn chance against weavile) Lastly, Heatran can run all-out attacking Choice Specs and Choice Scarf sets on dedicated sun teams, but such sets are extremely situational and miss out on all the coveted utility Heatran has to offer. (sun is not great atm, and i wouldn't really mention these)

Checks and Counters

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Specially bulky Pokemon such as Tyranitar Venomicon and Galarian Slowking can switch into Heatran while taking minimal damage and proceed to threaten it with Superpower Earth Power and Earthquake, respectively. However, the latter is much less reliable of a check as its Earthquake is only strong enough to 3HKO Heatran, Venomicon can be easily chipped, however, while Galarian Slowking's Earthquake is only strong enough to 2HKO Heatran.

Astrolotl can switch into non-Air Balloon Heatran and threaten it with Stomping Tantrum.

**Offensive Fighting-types**: Galarian Zapdos and Urshifu-R cannot consistently switch into Heatran, but they force it out with strong, super-effective STAB moves.

Earth Power also notably hits Dragapult and Garchomp neutrally. (I'd not mention this at all; vs. anything that doesn't quad resist Earth Power does less damage than a Magma Storm landing after trapping damage. Maybe bring up Kril which both resists MS and doesn't care about the trapping damage) The last moveslot is interchangeable between Toxic and Stealth Rock, though the former is usually preferred to wear down particularly sturdy answers to Heatran in Gastrodon and Swampert.

Landorus-T itself is also an effective Heatran partner; Heatran appreciates both Landorus-T switching into Garchomp, as well as freeing up its moveslot for Toxic. It is essential to pair Heatran with defensive Water-types such as Toxapex and Slowbro, as they wall Galarian Zapdos, Venomicon-E, and Urshifu-R, which easily OHKO Heatran with their powerful STAB moves. Toxapex in particular also matches up very well into Buzzwole. Strong Ice-types like Weavile and Syclant also makes for a good Heatran teammates, coming in on and immediately threatening the aforementioned Ground-types as well as Dragon-types that Heatran struggles against such as Dragonite and Pajantom. (Syclant sees negative usage, I'd rather keep it to just Weavile) Lastly, Dragapult and Blacephalon are great partners, as they appreciate Heatran chipping Landorus-T and Colossoil.

name: Balloon Frog (this set name blows I hate dex)
move 1: Magma Storm
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Eruption
move 4: Stealth Rock
item: Air Balloon / Leftovers
ability: Flash Fire
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
With this more offensive set, (kind of a GP thing but don't cross-reference sets) Heatran sacrifices its bulk in return for being able to significantly damage some of its typical switch-ins, scoring a 2HKO on specially defensive Landorus-T with Eruption when at full health, and chunking uninvested Slowbro for nearly half. Air Balloon is what makes this set particularly appealing, strongly dissuading Landorus-T from switching into Heatran, while allowing it to wall Astrolotl and opposing Heatran for as long as it remains on the field without being damaged. While Leftovers could also be run for a source of passive recovery, Air Balloon is almost always superior for its exclusive ability to practically invalidate Heatran's checks and allow Heatran to make more offensive progress than usual in a game. Magma Storm lets Heatran trap and deal chip to its switch-ins, in addition to making for a strong Fire-type move even when Heatran is at low HP, which drastically reduces Eruption's power. Earth Power helps wear down switch-ins like Tapu Fini, Toxapex, and Garchomp quicker and provides coverage against opposing Fire-types. The given EV spread along with a Modest nature maximizies Heatran's offensive capabilities, fully taking advantage of Eruption's sheer power. (no need to mention what max SpA does)A Timid nature can also be considered for outspeeding Adamant Swords Dance Rillaboom, but it is generally useless outside of this benchmark.

Heatran loses out on added bulk when running this specific set; as a result, it becomes more vulnerable to special attackers like Dragapult and Tapu Koko. Therefore, Equilibra and Landorus-T make for a great partners, walling the latter and matching up well into the former, especially if they choose to run more Special Defense investment. Bulky Water-types, especially physically defensive Toxapex and standard Slowbro, make for invaluable, mandatory Heatran teammates, as they effectively check Galarian Zapdos and Urshifu-R, both of which are massive threats to Heatran. Offensive Electric and Grass-types like Tapu Koko, Zeraora, Kartana, Rillaboom, respectively, pair well with Heatran, switching in on and threatening out Pokemon it struggles against, such as Toxapex, Tapu Fini, and Slowking. It is also a good idea to pair Heatran with a strong special attacker in Dragapult or Blacephalon, as they form a potent wallbreaking core together, greatly pressuring their shared checks in Toxapex and Tapu Fini. Choice Specs Blacephalon in particular is a notable partner, as it swiftly disposes of certain bulky Water-types that Heatran cannot, especially Arghonaut and Slowbro. Lastly, a defensive Grass-type in Ferrothorn is also appreciated as a teammate, providing extra security against Water-types in general.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options

Heatran has a variety of other options at its disposal. With regard to its moves, it can run Heavy Slam on both its offensive and defensive set to more reliably KO certain Fairy-type opponents it has trapped, such as Clefable and Tapu Lele. Heavy Slam also more reliably defeats Pokemon like Weavile, Blissey, and Galarian Slowking, but its other options are better in more scenarios. Heatran can also run Protect on its defensive set to scout Choice item users, gain a turn of Leftovers recovery, and rack up status damage, but dropping Toxic for it means it will be unable to status foes itself. Although more niche, Heatran can additionally make use of Will-O-Wisp to cripple Landorus-T and Garchomp on the switch. In terms of its ability, Heatran running Flame Body invalidates Jumbao as a counter and results in it being severely damaged by Heatran's Fire-type moves, while also potentially punishing U-turn users in Dragapult, Tapu Koko, and Corviknight with a burn, but dropping Flash Fire for it means that Heatran cannot reliably check Volcarona.

Checks and Counters

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Specially bulky Pokemon such as Venomicon and Galarian Slowking can switch into Heatran while taking minimal damage and proceed to threaten it with Earth Power and Earthquake, respectively. Venomicon can be easily chipped, however, while Galarian Slowking's Earthquake is only strong enough to 2HKO Heatran.

Colossoil deserves special mention here for receiving a power boost if hit with Toxic on the switch, thanks to its ability in Guts.

**Bulky Water-types**: Arghonaut, Slowbro, Tapu Fini, and Shed Shell Toxapex can all easily switch into Heatran and damage it with super-effective moves. The former two dislike being poisoned, and have to be careful of getting worn down too quickly, though. While Gastrodon is more niche, it deserves special mention here for having access to Recover and immediately forcing Heatran out with Earthquake.

**Bulky Dragon-types**: Dragonite and Pajantom are both amazing answers to Heatran. The former takes little to nothing from Magma Storm, is immune to Earth Power, can heal off any status with Heal Bell, and has access to Roost to recover any lost HP. The latter is immune to status conditions thanks to Comatose, and threatens an OHKO on Heatran with Earthquake.

Choice Specs Blacephalon in particular is a notable partner, as it swiftly disposes can swiftly dispose of certain bulky Water-types that Heatran cannot, especially Arghonaut and Slowbro. Lastly, a defensive Grass-type in Ferrothorn is also appreciated as a teammate, providing provides extra security against Water-types in general.

Other Options
====

Heatran has a variety of other options at its disposal. With regard to its moves, It can run Heavy Slam on both its offensive and defensive set to more reliably KO certain Fairy-type opponents foes it has trapped, such as Clefable and Tapu Lele. Although more niche, Heatran can additionally make use of Will-O-Wisp to cripple Will-O-Wisp cripples Landorus-T and Garchomp on the switch. In terms of its ability, Heatran running Flame Body invalidates Jumbao as a counter and results in it being severely damaged by Heatran's Fire-type moves, Flame Body over Flash Fire invalidates Jumbao as a counter, as it relies on Trace, while also potentially punishing U-turn users in Dragapult, Tapu Koko, and Corviknight with a burn, but dropping Flash Fire for it means that Heatran cannot reliably check Volcarona. (removed extra line under)

Checks and Counters
====
Jumbao uses Trace and its Ground resistance to wall Flash Fire Heatran, but rare Flame Body sets destroy it with Fire-type moves, and Toxic is an inconvenience. (feel free to tinker obviously, esp tone-heavy words like "inconvenience" and "destroy", but jumbao seems worth mentioning bc you include it as "a counter" in oo)

Colossoil deserves special mention here for receiving a power boost if hit with Toxic on the switch, thanks to its ability in Guts.

**Bulky Water-types**: Arghonaut, Slowbro, Tapu Fini, and Shed Shell Toxapex can all easily switch into Heatran and damage it with super effective (removed hyphen) moves. The former two dislike being poisoned (RC) and have to be careful of getting worn down too quickly, though. While Gastrodon is more niche, it deserves special mention here for having access to Recover and immediately forcing Heatran out with Earthquake. (worth including swampert, bc you mention running toxic for it as a particularly sturdy answer in the defensive set?)

**Bulky Dragon-types**: Dragonite and Pajantom are both amazing answers to Heatran. The former takes little to nothing from Magma Storm, is immune to Earth Power, can heal off any status Toxic with Heal Bell, and has access to Roost to recover any lost HP. The latter is immune to status conditions Toxic thanks to Comatose (RC) and threatens an OHKO on Heatran with Earthquake. Astrolotl can switch into non-Air Balloon Heatran and threaten it with Stomping Tantrum.

**Offensive Fighting-types**: Galarian Zapdos and Urshifu-R cannot consistently switch into Heatran, but they force it out with strong, super effective (removed hyphen) STAB moves.
