ORAS OU Help me make a Mega Beedrill team!

Hello everyone,

I haven't played pokemon competitively for a long time now, but I want to get back into it. I want to make an OR/AS team, and as beedrill is one of my favorite pokemon, I want to make a Mega Beedrill team. I don't know too much about team building, but I took a shot at it.

*edited with more descriptions*

Beedrill-Mega @ Beedrillite
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 4 Def / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- X-Scissor
- Poison Jab
- Drill Run
- Protect

Beedrill is the main focus of this team. It acts as my physical sweeper. Mostly I just megaevo and try getting off a swords dance, and then spam poison jab.

The EVs and nature were because I want it to be a fast sweeper. X Scissor and Poison Jab are my stab moves, and drill run is my attack for steel and fighting types. However, I find it hard getting beedrill safely into a battle and mega evolve, but I don't want to change this to a different pokemon as it's the reason I'm playing again.

Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 40Atk / 214 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Surf
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Greninja is my special sweeper, and Gunk Shot is there for sylveon, in my experience it kills even with a modest nature. I use surf since I don't like missing hydro pumps.

Surf and ice beam are staples for coverage, I think (I see them on all the sets). Hidden Power Fire kills Skarmory and Ferrothorn, and Gunk Shot kills Sylveon in my experience, even with no EVs and a timid nature.

I picked greninja as my special sweeper because I used to use it back when I played, and it worked great for me then.

I changed to 44 Atk and Naive to kill Azumarils that switch in, and I can do some damage to a predicted incoming rotom-wash switch.

Sylveon @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Wish
- Heal Bell
- Baton Pass

Sylveon is my cleric and special wall, wishpass, heal bell, and hyper voice for an offensive move.

I use EVs and nature to make it as specially bulky as possible, and heal bell and wish support my team. I didn't know what to put as my fourth move though, so I just picked baton pass.

I picked Sylveon since I know it is a good special wall, and I hate Chansey so I didn't want to use it.

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Toxic

Ferrothorn is my physical wall and sets up rocks for me.

EVs and nature are to make it as physically bulky as possible. Iron barbs and rocky helmet is nice to have as it takes out 25% of my opponents health on physical damage, and leech seed also wears them down more and provides recovery. I use toxic as my status move because it withers down hp of my opponents, and I don't think greninja or beedrill need thunder wave support to be useful.

I picked Ferrothorn because I know it is a great physical wall, and I needed a pokemon that can set up stealth rocks.

I really wasn't sure what to have as the last 2 pokemon in my team, so I arbitrarily picked two bulky pokemon.

If I need two different roles that I don't remember, feel free to suggest them.

Latias (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 SpD
Modest Nature
- Defog
- Draco Meteor
- Roost
- Psyshock

Latias is my bulky special attacker with defog also to get rid of hazards.

I will be changing the EV spread to the suggested one below (sorry, on mobile so can't see name right now and forgot to copy it over).

Latias works as a backup special wall that can also throw in Draco Meteors for fun to punch holes in things. I mainly use it for defog.

I picked Latias because I know it has good special defense and attack.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Knock Off

Landorus is my bulky physical attacker. I have a scarf and 136 speed so I outspeed lead greninjas and uturn on them.

I changed the Landorus spread to the one suggested below. I tend to use Landorus in battles as a pivot to switch in with the intimidate or to scare something out (like a heatran) and uturn out on the switch.

I picked a Landorus because I used to use it back when I played and I remember having fun with it and it was pretty bulky, so I decided to use it as my physical bulky pokemon. I normally use it as a pivot to uturn out to something else.

I haven't been doing too well with this team, probably because I haven't battled in a long time (and was never very good at it anyways) and because my team could use improvements. I'm fine with switching any pokemon in this team except for mega beedrill. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

After playing a bit with this team, I feel like my biggest issue is getting in beedrill in safely as a mega evolve. Most of my time battling, I'm switching between Sylveon, Landorus, and Ferrothorn, and occasionally uturning out to greninja to kill something. Beedrill gets very little battle time.

Hey mate, interesting team!
You might want to read the forum rules here. You need at least three lines of description per pokemon, describing why you chose your EV's and movesets. Otherwise this thread could be locked by a mod.

Some quick thoughts though:
  • Scarf Landorus-T is an amazing Pivot and Revenge-Killer. It doesn't really require the bulk of 252 HP EV's, and would be better invested in Max Speed + Max Attack.
  • Latias without speed invested will not last long, due to the presence of other Lati@s, Max Speed Mega Scizor, Mega Charizard X, Mega Glalie, Mega Swampert without rain, etc. I recommend a spread of 72 HP/184 SpA/252 Spd; this allows it to always avoid a 2HKO from Thundurus-I's Life Orb HP Ice.
  • Changing the HP EV's to give Greninja and Beedrill an Odd HP number (i.e. 77, 101, 9000009 etc.), will allow them to take less damage from Stealth Rocks and Life Orb damage.
:]

Nice team you've got there! I don't see Mega Beedrill that often. Some thoughts:

Replace X-Scissor with U-Turn and Swords Dance with Protect. Here's the thing: Beedrill CANNOT take a hit. Ever. Swords Dance is best for bulky setup sweepers, not frail fast things like Beedrill. Protect should help you on the Mega Evolve turn so you can outspeed and kill things later without getting outsped and killed turn 1. U-Turn helps Beedrill's niche as a hit-and-run attacker by letting it get to safety quickly.

As for how to get Beedrill in, my advice is to wait until one of your mons is KO'd or U-Turn out of a faster threat as Lando-T. It's not easy getting Beedrill in to murder things, but it sure is fun when you do.

I'm surprised. Mega Beedrill hyper offensive VoltTurn teams are all over the ladder ATM.
Replace X-Scissor with U-Turn and Swords Dance with Protect.
Protect is a poor option on Mega Beedrill as it has a shockingly easy time mega evolving due to the number of switches it forces. IMO Knock Off is a better option for the fourth moveslot due to the utility it provides being far better than the momentum-killing Protect.

I didn't take a clear look at the team but here's a small suggestion that will help you a lot.
Please don't run Swords Dance on beedrill. I know you like it and you want to make it your sweeper but that thing is too frail to be setting up. It dies to the weakest of attacks so trust me, you wouldn't want to be running Swords Dance. In my opinion, you should be running it as a pivot. Its U-Turn will probs deal heck load of damage so just bring it in get some damage off with U-Turn, switch out and bring a suitable match-up for the opponent. I'll take a clear look on the team in a while. I haven't played ORAS OU yet so i don't know the common set. You should look at the analysis and find out a non SD set. Hope this helped you.

Just wanna say, mega beedrill has surprisingly good special bulk. Life orb greninja hydro pump fails to OHKO at full health. Just something to say, because unlike its physical side, it has decent special. Of course, any super effective move will kill it, but neutral special stabs arent as good.

ThePack Max speed and attack lando has been working great. I'm currently using an adamant nature, but is there anything else I can outspeed by switching to jolly? In the same vein, do I need all 252 EVs to hit a certain speed tier with the scarf, or can I take some out and move them into HP for better bulk? That being said, Lando is definitely bulky enough on its own and acts as a great pivot in my team.

Phione Thanks for the protect and uturn suggestions! I tried them out and I loved it. Protect lets me safely megaevolve when I come in if I uturn a switch with lando/baton pass out from Sylveon (I use it as a nondamaging uturn, it works great!) and then Uturn right out again, dealing some nice damage. Beedrill works really well as a pivot now, thanks!

gamer boy I tried going with knock off, but I missed protect too much. There weren't that many pokemon I could switch in on and outspeed first turn. I could outspeed slow, bulky pokemon, but then I wouldn't use protect anyways, or faster pokemon would outspeed me on that turn itself and hit me with a strong move (that would usually kill) before I could unleash beedrill's wrath.

Ahabb Switching to protect has worked great~

Leremyju I like to keep beedrill at as high health as possible though, I'd prefer to not be forced to take a hit and retaliate, meaning I have to safely wishpass to Sylveon or defog and put up rocks again so I can safely heal beedrill.

I have noticed a few issues with this team though.

1) I have no priority. Talonflames and, to a lesser extent, bullet punching scizor and speed boosted pokemon just rip through a chunk of my team if Lando doesn't outspeed/is weak to one of their moves. I'm thinking of either putting shadow sneak/water shuriken on greninja and making it a mixed set (maybe even put uturn on, I would like some suggestions), or replacing lando with a scizor, but I'm less keen on this option, because I like having a scarfed RK pivot. If I do go this route, I would like to move the scarf to Latias, but then I'll have defog/roost issues (though defog can go to scizor) and it'll become a fully offensive Latias.

2) I can't power through massive bulk. Mega slowbro = gg. Unless I can get lando/beedrill to get 2 strong uturns in a row, I can't take it down. Alternatively, if I can't get a toxic up on a really defensive pokemon with good recovery (porygon 2, mega slowbro), I can't hit it strong enough to kill it. I would like to have more status on my team, but I'm not sure how I can fit it in (I don't want to put a status move on sylveon, as I actually really like having Baton Pass, wishpassing is really easy and it works as a nice pivot too).

Help would be loved!

Candylatte, that's good!
Adamant allows you to outspeed quite a few mons in the tier, bar base 145 speed mons eg. Mega Sceptile, Scarf Excadrill/Landorus-T, and Swift Swim/Sand Rush/Chlorophyll mons. If you wanted extra bulk, I recommend running Jolly over Adamant, and running 232 EV's. That will allow you to outspeed Jolly Scarf Excadrill, while also allowing you to put 24 EV's into HP for extra bulk. Ultimately though, its your choice :]

ThePack I've decided to run jolly with 168 Speed, 252 attack, and 88 hp. This lets me outspeed mega beedrill and sceptile. I didn't bother with outspeeding scarfed excadrill since it can't touch lando at all and would always switch out, so that would just be a uturn opportunity. If it stayed in and attacked fsr, the most it can go is 30% with an iron head.
-1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 252 Def Landorus-T: 84-100 (24.6 - 29.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
worst case scenario:
-1 252+ Atk Sand Force Excadrill Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 252 Def Landorus-T in Sand: 109-129 (31.9 - 37.8%) -- 0.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery if sand force in sandstorm

Ahabb the simulator doesn't mind me using it? And I'm not using baton pass like a baton passing chain or setting up boosts, I don't feel like that's an annoying issue? I don't know for sure though, I remember some talks about a baton pass ban were starting back when I played, but I stopped playing before those ever finished.

Edit:
  • Baton Pass Clause: Players cannot have more than one Pokémon with the move Baton Pass.
What I'm doing is fine.

no, what i mean is that i once tried using wish with baton pass but it was incompatible then. I don't know about now though. Have you tried it?

Hey candylatte, I kinda agree, but your calcs are a little miscalculated ;)
You're not running max defense on your Landorus-T, so the calcs are more like...
-1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 109-129 (31.9 - 37.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
-1 252+ Atk Sand Force Excadrill Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T in Sand: 141-166 (41.3 - 48.6%) -- 74.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
...Who uses Sand Force anymore... :/
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Excadrill Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 142-168 (41.6 - 49.2%) -- 76.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Excadrill Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 162-192 (47.5 - 56.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Make of these calcs what you will; if you decide that it is not a threat to your team, go for the extra bulk.
:]
