Hippowdon is primarily used on Ground teams because of its ability to automatically set sand, which allows it to support a huge threat in Excadrill. This set allows Hippowdon to support its team using its good bulk, Stealth Rock, and Whirlwind alongside being a weather setter. Generally, Hippowdon should try to be sent out early in the game in order to set sand and Stealth Rock and kept healthy enough to support Excadrill consistently. However, be wary of the fact that you cannot phaze Dynamax Pokemon and that Hippowdon can be a momentum sink sometimes when it is switched in to reset sand, although it is not necessary in some matchups. Maximum HP and Defense investment allows Hippowdon to take on threats such as Mimikyu with ease, but a more specially defensive spread can be used if it suits your team better.

Excadrill is the best partner for Hippowdon, as the sand Hippowdon sets allows Excadrill to activate and sweep using its ability. Other offensive Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Diggersby appreciate the chip damage from Hippowdon's Stealth Rock and sand in order to break down the opposing team more easily. Hippowdon also appreciates Water immunities from Pokemon such as Gastrodon and Seismitoad, which can switch into Pokemon such as Rotom-W, Choice Band Barraskewda, and Dracovish.

Worth having a small bit about momentum. Hippo is a huge momentum sink, so sometimes, you're just switching hippo in to set sand and getting him right out, which means it's not healing, but that's not that necessary in some matchups.

Hippowdon is primarily used on Ground teams because of its ability to automatically set Sandstorm sand, which therefore allows it to support a huge threat in Excadrill. This set allows Hippowdon to support its team using its good defensive bulk, Stealth Rock, and Whirlwind alongside being a weather setter. However, be wary of the fact that you cannot phaze Dynamax Pokemon (RC) and that Hippowdon can be a momentum sink sometimes when it is switched in and out of sand, ("switched in to reset sand"?) although it is not necessary in some matchups. Maximum HP and Defense investments allow investment allows Hippowdon to be as physically bulky as possible, and therefore take on threats such as Mimikyu with ease, but a more specially defensive spread can be used if it suits your team better.
