I got here from the bulbagarden; a link redirected me to smogon.

I am Pikachu25 on Bulbapedia, Pika25 on BMGf, and Pika250 on Youtube.

How did I first get into Pokémon?

The year was 1998. When we were at Toys R Us, I found this book that had info concerning first-gen Pokémon. Come to think of it, some of the Pokémon I loved were Blastoise, Charizard, Venusaur, and (of course) Pikachu. The first Pokémon game I played was Yellow; this started back in 1999, and I still have the original save file in there since. Pikachu became my favorite Pokémon when I was first introduced to Pokémon Yellow, and still is.

How I first started playing pokemon:

When I was a lot younger I borrowed my uncle's gameboy for a few months. I began playing many different games, my favorite being mario tennis and pokemon blue version. I don't remember how old I was but I do remember playing pokemon any chance I got. Eventually I had to give back the gameboy and I pretty much forgot about pokemon for a number of years. Then a few months ago I decided I was going to try to get back into pokemon. Natrually I bought a DS lite and Pokemon diamond.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I started competitive battling a few weeks after I beat the game. I read as many guides as I could about EV training and IV breeding. Eventually I had myself a pretty nice team. Then one day I happened across the Smogon D/P Analysis Index. That pretty much changed everything for me and I would constantly go back to read about the best movesets for different pokemon. Eventually I started going to different parts of the forums. I especially liked how the trading threads here are heavily IV based. To me it seems like the next step of my competitive battling journey.

How I first started playing pokemon:

i think i was in 9th grade in '99, and my friend yoshi played red all the time. i checked it out and was curious about the game, so i eventually picked up a copy. i've played every gen to come out since then, exept maybe the console games.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

even though, i've played all the generations, i didn't get into compettive battling until now with online battling. i've never really had that many friends who've played, and those who did never really got into the technical stuff. i found out about smogon from references to the analysis pages on other forums. also when i went to the manaphy event in september, i met another competitve battler (the only one) there. he also talked about smogon and how he used the forums, so i thought i'd join and check it out.

How I first stared playing pokemon:

I first started playing Pokémon when my father brought home an emulator for Pokémon: Green Version, which was the Japanese equivalent to Blue. Having no idea how to read Japanese and having no comprehension of the system, I nevertheless got the basics and was able to get through the game with much blood, sweat, and tears.

However, I only started really playing when I acquired an emulator for the Yellow Version some time later. In that, I relearned the fundamentals and was finally able to get my head into the game. Back then, I was fairly new to the system, focusing on sheer power over versatility and competitive play. Of course, with it being an emulator, I couldn't have fought anyone if I tried.

My first competitive game was Pokémon Crystal, which I bought in a bundle pack with my kiwi-colored Game Boy Color. This game is what truly immersed me into the Pokémon series, as I delved into the breeding program with gusto. I bred around 130 generations of various Pokémon (focusing on Dragon-types, the odd Blissey, and so forth) before it was stolen during my freshmen year in high school. I've been playing ever since, hitting only one game with every generation.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

To be perfectly honest, I haven't battled online besides NetBattle (which has long since died due to network restrictions placed on my computer), though I hope to in the near future.

I heard about Smogon after I'd bred my first Ninetales in Diamond, as a friend of mine sneered that, "Whatever moveset you picked, Smogon did it better, I'd bet." I took him up on that bet, looked up the Diamond/Pearl analysis thread on Ninetales, and found an identical moveset to the one I'd specially bred onto my Vulpix. :p

I got $5, and a nice little addition to my bookmarks.

I've been designing competitive movesets ever since the Crystal era, and have continued to do so in this newest set of games... and have earned somewhat of a name for myself among my friends for being 'the chick who takes Pokémon a little bit too seriously'. Maybe it's because I keep yelling at them when three out of four of their Charizard's moves are Fire Spin, Flamethrower, and Heat Wave.

I've been lurking for about... oh, two months now. Figured it was about time to make myself an account and make myself useful.

obviously lots of people looking at how many posts are in this thread. as for me, i found smogon when i was looking for Netbattle. i found the DL mirror on teh website and noticed they had a strategydex. i lurked for probably 3-4 months before that stupid message at the top finally annoyed me into registering. the rest is history i guess

How I first stared playing pokemon:

My mom bought me the GBC when I was like 9. My first ever game was Pokemon, and I couldn't put it down. I guess it still has a hold on me, 7 years later xD

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

A clan I joined for another game had some people who played pokemon competitively, and so I try to join in but I have no idea what the hell they're talking about! XD But eventually through playing Diamond myself I start to understand a bit more. And one of them, Zero.EXE, referred me here. I hope that someone can help me get better at this game, seeing as I suck. xD

How I first started playing pokemon:

When I was 5-6 I think I was watching TV when I saw the commercial for Pokemon Blue/ Red. Yes the one with Pikachu getting on the bus and all the pokemon getting condensed down into a little catridge. Gotta love it. :D

How I first started battling online/ How I found out about Smogon:

I found Smogon on another forum called NSider (Nintendo's Official Forums). This was waaaaaaaay before the forums shut down. I had just used it to find some good move sets for pokemon, but thenI finally said, "What the hell, let's make an account."

How I first started playing pokemon:

It was a few years ago when I first heard about competitive battling. I was surrounded by people who hated pokemon, a mindset that condemned pokemon, and overall, a society that despised it. Nevertheless, one day I decided to pick up my old Yellow version again, and I loved it. Soon enough, I found out about Serebii, and then got a glimpse into competitive battling. I learned about ADV movesets, EV training, etc. However, I was never dedicated enough to netbattle.

How I first started battling online/ How I found out about Smogon:

About two years ago, I read an issue of my brother's Nintendo Power and saw an article about the 'North America Battle Frontier'. Interested (because it was the first time when I actually saw people outside of the internet playing 'competitive' pokemon), I read through the entire article, and finally, came to the last battle. It scared the hell out of me. How did some guy with a fly Rayquaza beat someone who used a well-constructed team? The issue faded in me until one day in early 2007 I decided to search for an inside story of this travesty. Eventually, Google hit me up with a site called 'Smogon', and also the answer to what had baffled me for years. I didn't leave the site, though; I was stuck to it and read up on tips of competitive battling and movesets. However, by the time I became decent enough to hold my own, D/P came along, and I was forced to once again start my pokemon legacy from scratch.

How I first started playing pokémon:

I've grown up with video games and Pokémon. Whenever Blue came out, I began playing. I bought Silver with my dad, my brother got Sapphire, then FireRed, I got Diamond, he got Pearl, I got Red Rescue Team, we recieved Colloseum and XD for various holidays. I love Pokémon, and I don't think that's going to change.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Well... Truthfully, I've never battled on-line, but I've been wanting to learn more about it. I have an account on GameFAQs (Legender93) and I discovered on-line battling there, but I never tried it. The classes and clauses just seemed rather confusing. Last night, my brother and I were browsing the Diamond board on GameFAQs and someone posted a link to a site with Pokémon rants... What Gamefreak did right, what they did wrong. This morning, I woke up and checked e-mail and such, and visited the rants site. It was fun to read the stuff that should be improved, and I read some of the starter rants. I then scanned through Sinnoh Pokémon rants, and came across Gastrodon, to which a war story here was posted. I read through some topics, looked at the beta site, and finally joined with an urge to begin on-line play. And here I am, making my first post here.

Well, back in nsider, I jeard people from smogon were some of the best battlers around, so I wanted to join the right crowd. :)

How I First Started Playing Pokemon
the year was 2004, I was 11. I got pokemon Saphire for my birthday and enjoyed so much I bought all the other games.

How I started battling online/ Found out about smogon
The year was 2007, I was 13. I found out about netbattle from a competitive battling GameFaq I was reading. After that the next step was Shoddybattle and then somebody on there told me about smogon.

i just heard of it about a month ago and just recently registered. i've been missing out on a lot. i just read up on iv's and evs and all that and never new how detailed pokemon is. it's pretty interesting though and once i get down with the basics i'll enter tournaments and participate more in moveset discussions.

Damn all you bastards pokemon sucks. for little baby's jackasses. see you all in hell

I don't know if anyone's noticed but is this considered spamming and all that.

How I started playing pokemon

I was 3 when yellow came out. My older bro and my cousin got yellow for christmas. I saw my brother playing and I literally fell in love with it. I had to have it. I asked my mom if i could get it, but I couldnt cuz i couldnt read all te words on it. After that, I was freaking determined. I read day and night, and learned and learned. Yup. I got pokemon yellow when i was 4, and learned to read :D. I played so much. My favorite wuz always charmander, and i always just used the powerful moves, instead of accurate (hydro pump>surf, FireBlast>Fthrower, and even Sheer Cold over Ice Beam. I pwned so much, and I caught mewtwo when I was still 4 (oya mad skillz) and my best team ever was charizard pikachu lapras dragonite snorlax and mewtwo(or atleast i thought it wuz the best team ever XD i wuz 4.)

How I found Smogon

Well I had always been a noob for battling. Pure truth. I never paid attention to natures, and i didnt EV. Pretty sad, huh. When I found my first forum (PokemonElite2000) I battled some, and well, I lost basically every battle. One time, I battled a guy named Rinol. I am guessing he realized i sucked, cuz after, he gave me some free EVd pokemon. I began to start winning battles now. Also now, I can EV train and stuff. Rinol and I became good friends. We made a trade shop together and stuff. One day (the sweetest day ever cuz Smogon pwns), Rinol asked me if I wanted one of his Psyducks. He said the people on smogon were offering big for it. Then i googled smogon, registered, and look at me now lol i am 13 (almost 14) and I pwn battles (well I will when my new team is finished)

How I started playing pokemon

Well, I started playing Pokemon in second grade. Yes, Blue Version was my very first game. I got it by trading a Ninetales from the TCG for it. I beat Blue, and traded it for Red. I beat Red, and traded it for Yellow (yes, my class in second to 4th grade were like drug dealers only with Pokemon cartridges instead of alcohol). After beating Yellow, I traded Yellow along with a Lapras card for my very first Silver version.

I beat Silver Version, and then...I quit Pokemon..

Now here I am, a Sophomore...I here about Diamond and Pearl...and walla! I'm interested in it again! I go, like an idiot, and purchase a Nintendo DS. I buy LeafGreen, then Diamond, and then Emerald. I'm back to Pokemon, and its pretty fun, now that I know about competitive battling!

How I found Smogon

Well, I had just gotten a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, but had nobody to trade with. I tried PokeCommunity, and PokemonElite2000. I had my fun there, but when I found out about IV's, I knew that those places were just not for me...I mean, the people there think they're Archimedes since they know about EV's...

So, I decided to look around for a new site. One day, on PokemonElite, I posted asking if there was any site/page that had recommended move-sets for all the Pokemon. 3 guesses who I was referred too?

SMOGON's ANALYSIS PAGE!

I hadn't joined Smogon though. All I did was use it for the Analysis pages for about 2 months. Then, finally, in early October, I decided it was finally time to join the Smogon community once and for all!

=D

I think I am long, long overdue for posting in this 'ere thread.

How I started playing Pokemon
I first became interested back when I lived in Colorado about 8-9 years ago, back when the trading card game was all the rage. The idea of it just fascinated me, and I soon got caught up in it. After a year or so, we moved, and I pretty much completely forgot about it. When I got a GBA - the original ugly one - a friend gave me Yellow version, but I wasn't able to beat it before it disappeared (!!!). After I sold my GBA to fund my need for new climbing shoes, I pretty much forgot about it again. I picked up a booster pack of cards sometimes, but not too often because it's embarassing to be seen buying those when you're a teenager :P. After I got a DS, I still didn't pick up a game until Diamond came out, but for three months before it did come out, I studied on the NSider competitive battling thread and Serebii (the two worst places to for newbies), and I got a demerit here once I joined on my second post for saying something stupid about how Haze is awesome because then Gyara can't get 6 DDs. Yeah, that wasn't fun.

But anyways, I used Serebii's sets on my in-game team, and then I started playing pretty much the way everybody else here did when they learned how to. I chose stuff that looked cool/was interesting/that I liked, and even if it didn't necessarily work well, I learned tons from it, like:
- Pory2 rocks
- Gallade sucks as a sweeper
- If you don't have a special sponge on your team, Yanmega says hi and then murders you
- ScarfElectivire works...sometimes
- CBGross, even though it hits hard, doesn't work too well as a lead on WiFi because of all the Swamperts running around

After I came here, I learned and learned, lost tons of battles, and then kept on learning until I became decent. In my humble opinion, I've actually gotten quite good, having beaten some of the top teams on Game Battles, and being in 8th place there after one day of good battling. I've also gotten good at breeding, as you can see from my trade thread (and it's still growing).

How I found Smogon
I was basically linked to the Pogey analysis, and that's how it all started. After forever of lurking, I posted, and got a demerit, so I lurked moar and moar, learning the ins and outs of battling. Too bad I can't mIRC to work, though, because that would definately be fun!

I was used to be a kid from serebii and I heard about this place from a friend at a card shop. I checked it out and seriously didn't believe my eyes. I learned so much here. This place fucking rocks!

When i first played pokemon,i was at Serebii, i think thats where the noobs are at. Than i got on marriland and kind of liked it. i have many post there but the problem was it didnt help me with pokemon movesets. So i asked my friend about a moveset for a pokemon and he showed me this site. I came to this site daily but never registered but now i did. THIS PLACE ROCKS

I've been around another game forum with a Pokemon subsection, but it became really inactive this time around the year, but I remember someone posting a link to Smogon and I've been lurking since June. I finally registered in October but still lurking a bit more before I start posting.
