The large supermajority of fans, myself included, are introduced to the franchise through one of Pokémon's many branches of advertisement that coincide with the games themselves. The idea is that the promotion of the brand will eventually bring newer fans into the source material, which in this case is, of course, the video games. One of the best ways to try and figure this out if you've ever been as curious as I have (see my previous post for more details) is to try and pinpoint what your "beginning era" of Pokémon, so to speak, would have been. I actually have no idea. I've been a big fan of the series for as long as I can remember; I'm guessing I started with either the anime or cards since I was already really familiar with mons by the time I got my first actual game.
As for why I am still playing Pokemon, that's much easier to answer. It's solely because of the awesome people here at Smogon; particularly the Smogon Wifi Discord. Gaming is somewhat of a social activity for me and I've just had a great time getting to meet all of you wonderful folks.
I... hmm. I dunno, bud. It's just a hunch, but something tells me you weren't very into Pokémon during most of the 3DS era. I dunno, i just... have the feeling, you know?I had gotten into Pokemon with Black 2, proceeded to not play any Pokemon till UM, then sword

7.8/10 too much ironwaterHey there! I wanted to do something for my 1000th post and found this pretty cool thread so here I am.
I was 8 years old when I first heard of Pokemon. My family moved to another city and in my new school, almost everyone was playing the card game, so I started buying Pokemon cards too. My father was taking me to the mall on weekends to buy boosters and I was enjoying trading or just battling with my cards (with very approximative rules) during recess. In the meantime, I also started watching the anime on TV (it was like gen 2 or gen 3, I don’t really remember). At the end of the year, my parents bought me a Nintendo DS for my birthday, with the new game that was just released: Pokemon Diamond. It was my first time playing a Pokemon game and I struggled a lot (I remember getting stucked for hours and hours before finding where I needed to go to reach the first gym city), but I also enjoyed the game a lot. I even bought Pearl some months after just to get Palkia and the Pearl exclusive mons.
Since then, I’ve been playing to most of the main series Pokemon games and even some Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Rangers games (which I really enjoyed too). I was mainly playing during new games release, and I even tried to understand competitive mons during X and Y, breeding competitively viable Pokemon and doing online battles. I kept playing Pokemon games for so long because I was enjoying discovering new regions with new Pokemon to catch and trying the ingame challenges like the battle tower/tree…, but I’ve stayed a rather casual player until Sun and Moon release which was when I discovered Pokemon Showdown. I was super bad at first, and I wasn’t playing a lot, but was still enjoying my time there as it was way easier to find good opponents and there was no breeding needed.
I started playing regularly on Pokemon Showdown with gen 8 release (and global lockdown), as I had a lot of free time and not a lot of things to do. I spent so many hours on the gen 8 games (I have like 400 hours on Shield) and began to understand how to play the game competitively. I joined Smogon a bit latter because I was enjoying all these PS formats that were not playable ingame (like Other Metagames) and here I am, with 1000 posts here over 2 years. I’ve played the recent switch games (BDSP and PLA) and I enjoyed both of them. I’m also super hyped for the gen 9 games which I will definitively buy, and hopefully enjoy.

If I’ve spent so much time here, it’s first of all because I love this game, but also because of all the friends I made on PS/Smogon. Here is a little s/o for the main friends I made (didn’t put everyone to avoid having something way too long):
R8 (and
Also hi Kaede.
Brumirage : Encore merci d’avoir fait mon super avatar Brumi, t’as vraiment carry PS niveau avatar, t’es super talentueuse !
OU people:
pastagirl: You are the goat of OU room, I don’t know if you’ll see this post, but if you do, I just wanted to say thank you for all the things you’ve been doing there. You’re a super nice and cool person and I’m happy to staff in the room with you.
ausma: You’ve been completely killing it this year. You are a stellar contributor and you made me want to contribute and to improve. You’re super nice with people and super active within the OU community, thanks so much for trusting me and for all the things you did!
Finchinator: You did so much both as a player and a contributor and you are someone I look up to a lot. Also, you have good tastes #team Fuecoco.
And the rest of the forum mod team: Abhi, Zneon, Ruft (and TPP but you’re just below too): you guys form a super cool team and I’m glad to be able to mod the forum with you.
Typhlosion4: You are always willing to help people which is something I admire, you’ve been doing great in both OU and TA and you make super good threads here.
Azure: I’m sad that you left mons, but you were one of my best friend in the OU room and a very cool person. Hope you’re doing fine irl!
Trainer Academy/RMT people:
ErPeris: You’re one of the nicest person I met on PS and I love staffing with you in TA or playing ffa with you and other friends. Glad I met you Peppe.
maroon: I enjoy staffing with you in TA and in RMT, thanks for trusting me. You’re a cool dude and a talented mono player.
TPP: Thank you for your help with my rates and for all you’ve done for the RMT section, I admire you a lot both as a contributor and as a player.
adem: My man is farming badges even faster than me. But jokes aside, you’re a stellar contributor everywhere and I appreciate your help in the RMT section and in TA.
Lalaya: You came back recently, but already did so much. You’re hella motivated and that’s very impressive. Love your energy!
Coolcodename: I don’t have as much time as before to play OU games with you, but still appreciate your presence in TA and your motivation to improve.
ShuckleDeath: You did so much for the RMT forum Shuckle, and it was nice to talk with you from time to time. Take care of your family!
