How did you get into Pokémon?

It was in the third grade in 2010. It had to have been the fall 2010 season as opposed to spring 2011 because Black & White hadn't come out in North America just yet. I was in the gym of our extremely old and now closed down elementary school (or what was left of it), and I quickly found myself interested in some trading cards my friends were talking about, which of course turned out to be Pokémon cards. From what very little I remember of the third grade, I had heard of Pokémon before this, and hadn't been too interested up until this point. This was also after I got my DS and our family's original Wii, which (spoiler alert) finally bit the dust earlier this year. ;-;
The one detail I do remember extremely vividly was walking out of school that day, saying these exact words. With two spare Pokémon cards given to me earlier in the day, I left that day changed forever.
"Hey, Mom? I like Pokémon now."
Now... despite these specific years and dates, the eras of when I got into each part of Pokémon's media was VERY different.

- Main series: One of either Pearl or SoulSIlver, I can't remember which came first
- Spinoff games: Pokémon Ranger Guardian Signs
- TCG: By virtue of the set my first cards were from, I'm obligated to say the Platinum era
- Anime: About a third of the way into Black & White
- Manga: Never got into collecting the individual books, I had one book of BW and that's it
- Anything online related: X & Y, specifically starting in 2014
How did I get into Pokemon? I actually have no idea. I've been a big fan of the series for as long as I can remember; I'm guessing I started with either the anime or cards since I was already really familiar with mons by the time I got my first actual game.
As for why I am still playing Pokemon, that's much easier to answer. It's solely because of the awesome people here at Smogon; particularly the Smogon Wifi Discord. Gaming is somewhat of a social activity for me and I've just had a great time getting to meet all of you wonderful folks.

I had gotten into Pokemon with Black 2, proceeded to not play any Pokemon till UM, then sword
The large supermajority of fans, myself included, are introduced to the franchise through one of Pokémon's many branches of advertisement that coincide with the games themselves. The idea is that the promotion of the brand will eventually bring newer fans into the source material, which in this case is, of course, the video games. One of the best ways to try and figure this out if you've ever been as curious as I have (see my previous post for more details) is to try and pinpoint what your "beginning era" of Pokémon, so to speak, would have been. Using what you know, I personally find it fun to try and put the puzzle together, the end goal being to try and remember some of the things we've forgotten.
I... hmm. I dunno, bud. It's just a hunch, but something tells me you weren't very into Pokémon during most of the 3DS era. I dunno, i just... have the feeling, you know?
Fair enough. I believe my starting era might have been the late gen 3/early gen 4 days of the anime. I mostly remember watching the Sinnoh anime which is why a lot of my favourites are from there. I didn't have a DS at the time but I remember always watching my friends play HGSS and DPPT. I finally got my own Pokemon game when I was a fair bit older, playing BW on my cousin's hand-me-down DS. So gen 4 is kind of weird in that it gives me the strong nostalgia despite not having actually played until much later.
Hey there! I wanted to do something for my 1000th post and found this pretty cool thread so here I am.
I was 8 years old when I first heard of Pokemon. My family moved to another city and in my new school, almost everyone was playing the card game, so I started buying Pokemon cards too. My father was taking me to the mall on weekends to buy boosters and I was enjoying trading or just battling with my cards (with very approximative rules) during recess. In the meantime, I also started watching the anime on TV (it was like gen 2 or gen 3, I don’t really remember). At the end of the year, my parents bought me a Nintendo DS for my birthday, with the new game that was just released: Pokemon Diamond. It was my first time playing a Pokemon game and I struggled a lot (I remember getting stucked for hours and hours before finding where I needed to go to reach the first gym city), but I also enjoyed the game a lot. I even bought Pearl some months after just to get Palkia and the Pearl exclusive mons.
Since then, I’ve been playing to most of the main series Pokemon games and even some Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Rangers games (which I really enjoyed too). I was mainly playing during new games release, and I even tried to understand competitive mons during X and Y, breeding competitively viable Pokemon and doing online battles. I kept playing Pokemon games for so long because I was enjoying discovering new regions with new Pokemon to catch and trying the ingame challenges like the battle tower/tree…, but I’ve stayed a rather casual player until Sun and Moon release which was when I discovered Pokemon Showdown. I was super bad at first, and I wasn’t playing a lot, but was still enjoying my time there as it was way easier to find good opponents and there was no breeding needed.
I started playing regularly on Pokemon Showdown with gen 8 release (and global lockdown), as I had a lot of free time and not a lot of things to do. I spent so many hours on the gen 8 games (I have like 400 hours on Shield) and began to understand how to play the game competitively. I joined Smogon a bit latter because I was enjoying all these PS formats that were not playable ingame (like Other Metagames) and here I am, with 1000 posts here over 2 years. I’ve played the recent switch games (BDSP and PLA) and I enjoyed both of them. I’m also super hyped for the gen 9 games which I will definitively buy, and hopefully enjoy.

Beka : T’es un de mes premiers et meilleurs amis sur Poké, on se tape des barres tout le temps et c’est cool de discuter et de shitpost avec toi. En espérant qu’avec la 9g tu deviennes un peu meilleur au jeu histoire de relever le niveau de mes wildchalls.
Tuthur : Pareil que le mec au-dessus, même si je pense que y a moins de travail en terme de relevage de niveau de jeu. Dommage que tu sois dans un trou paumé de la campagne française, ça aurait été cool de faire un irl (sauf si tu peux quand même venir sur Paris).
Jojos : Toujours aussi énigmatique, mais toujours aussi drôle, surtout quand tu commences à parler en arabe. Comme dirait Redemption : ratio Jojos.
Palapapop : Je suis content que tu sois revenu dans le staff franais, toujours cool de discuter avec toi et tu fais un taff incroyable sur franais et arcade.
Inder : L’enfant terrible de l’Ubers français ! Bon en vrai ça va parce que t’as bien grandi depuis le temps et je te trouve sympa mtn, n’en déplaise à Staxi.
Staxi : En parlant du loup, en vrai avant de te connaître je te trouvais un peu intimidant et j’avais peur que tu m’insultes, du coup j’ai pas fait la blague de bah alors Staxi t’es driver Ubers. Bon au final maintenant que je te connais ça va tu me fais rire.
PandaDoux : Le petit prince des OMs, on joue plus trop ensemble sur Smash et tout (notamment parce que j’ai plus d’abonnement au online et par manque de temps) mais j’apprécie quand même ton côté chill et posé.
Neco0s : J’aime pas trop les staffs Salty genre Mimilucha et tout, mais toi t’es cool quand tu me power abuse pas.
Mimilucha : Le plus UwU des joueurs UU, c’est cool de voir que tu commences à percer dans le tier.
Gt0 : Tu verras peut être ce post dans 2 semaines quand t’auras tes 30 minutes de co mensuelles (ou jamais) mais même si t’es plus trop présent tu restes un de mes premiers potes sur le jeu, bon courage pour tes études.
Sirwings : L’étoile montante de l’OU fr ? En tout cas c’était sympa de m’avoir aidé pour l’OFCT, encore merci ! En espérant que tu puisses briller à ton tour et faire taire les rageux.

SFG : Triste que tu sois parti mais les études c’est important, bon courage et j’espère que je serais à la hauteur pour te remplacer.

Hey there! I wanted to do something for my 1000th post and found this pretty cool thread so here I am.
I was 8 years old when I first heard of Pokemon. My family moved to another city and in my new school, almost everyone was playing the card game, so I started buying Pokemon cards too. My father was taking me to the mall on weekends to buy boosters and I was enjoying trading or just battling with my cards (with very approximative rules) during recess. In the meantime, I also started watching the anime on TV (it was like gen 2 or gen 3, I don’t really remember). At the end of the year, my parents bought me a Nintendo DS for my birthday, with the new game that was just released: Pokemon Diamond. It was my first time playing a Pokemon game and I struggled a lot (I remember getting stucked for hours and hours before finding where I needed to go to reach the first gym city), but I also enjoyed the game a lot. I even bought Pearl some months after just to get Palkia and the Pearl exclusive mons.
Since then, I’ve been playing to most of the main series Pokemon games and even some Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Rangers games (which I really enjoyed too). I was mainly playing during new games release, and I even tried to understand competitive mons during X and Y, breeding competitively viable Pokemon and doing online battles. I kept playing Pokemon games for so long because I was enjoying discovering new regions with new Pokemon to catch and trying the ingame challenges like the battle tower/tree…, but I’ve stayed a rather casual player until Sun and Moon release which was when I discovered Pokemon Showdown. I was super bad at first, and I wasn’t playing a lot, but was still enjoying my time there as it was way easier to find good opponents and there was no breeding needed.
I started playing regularly on Pokemon Showdown with gen 8 release (and global lockdown), as I had a lot of free time and not a lot of things to do. I spent so many hours on the gen 8 games (I have like 400 hours on Shield) and began to understand how to play the game competitively. I joined Smogon a bit latter because I was enjoying all these PS formats that were not playable ingame (like Other Metagames) and here I am, with 1000 posts here over 2 years. I’ve played the recent switch games (BDSP and PLA) and I enjoyed both of them. I’m also super hyped for the gen 9 games which I will definitively buy, and hopefully enjoy.

I first got into pokemon when I noticed kids on the bus playing with some pokemon cards. I was interested in what it was, so I watched them for a few days until they gave me my first pokemon card.
I still have this card. It's extremely weathered now, having been in my backpack for multiple weeks with me messing with it so often. After that, I just collected cards for a couple years until eventually I was introduced to showdown by a friend. Past that, I've just played showdown and roms / rom hacks.
