How do you play Pokemon in-game?

I still don't have HGSS (I've yet to complete Platinum), and from what I remember of 2nd gen, party options are kinda limited. Does the PokeWalker fix this? I've been planning my team for a while and nothing really satisfies me.

Try getting a Kangaskhan from the first Pokewalker route, it starts out with Fake Out and about the same stats as Feraligatr. Things like Ampharos, Quagsire, and Golem are quite good. Zubat might be bad at first, but you can get a Crobat before you fight Morty if you do it right. You can also get all the stones besides Sun, Dusk, Dawn, and Shiny from the Pokeathlon so you can get things like Arcanine and Jolteon. You can also get all the Pokemon that evolve from Pokemon with a move like Tangrowth. However, Yanmega sucks and I'm not sure the others are any better. Here's a link to the Pokewalker Courses page on Serebii.

First I diside what starter I want (sometimes months before I actually get the game). Then I make my team and slowly go through the game with a balanced team, training them evenly. I also dont catch the legendaries: I save them so I can later get them with competitive natures/ IVs.

I went up to red, got absolutely owned (destroyed by pika O.o), caught mewtwo and ho-oh, gave a rare candy to mewtwo, and pretty much swept :)

IMO, they should have made ho-oh level 50 (or available after red) and mewtwo available after Red.

I generally will plan out my team. No movesets etc, just Pokemon. I tend to use *almost* exclusively STAB moves and try to get optimum coverage for the E4, and preferably Gyms as well. I try and plan my teams so that I can get all the HM's in without having to go to the box and making sure everyone still has all the slots they need for their attack moves.

One thing I discovered semi-recently is that having defensive Pokemon in-game is really fun, and it's also really fun to have movesets that are actually varied and contain status moves and the like.
My most fun playthrough ever of a Pokemon game was on my most recent Leafgreen playthrough, where I used Charizard, Exeggutor, Vaporeon, Snorlax (never used it before, and ended up insanely good with just Body Slam and Shadow Ball), Dugtrio, and Raichu. Snorlax and Vaporeon being there to soak up hits added a lot to the game, I feel.

I started a Poison monotype on Diamond but never finished and ended up just starting a new game. I'd be interested in trying it again. If I ever get Platinum it's a possibility...

I've only done the starter spam technique once, on Diamond with Infernape. I don't think I'd have enjoyed it with any other starter, because Infernape has an insane movepool. It was actually pretty fun and I ended up being about lvl 75 before the E4.

Do you rush through the game with your starter to unlock everything as quickly as possible?

Indeed. The story, aside from the rare case in Pearl, I have no interest in. Everything I like in Pokémon usually occurs after completion of the game.

JpI get through the game first with a team I don't conditionally rain first because its easier to breed pokemon I use for metagame later. For years I just played to get through I didn't do any serious planning until recently.

Well, I don't really care about IVs or EVs in the beggining, just about natures because if I don't, my pokemons would really suck. I just start caring about EVs and IVs when I'm near the League, so I can pass easily and I can even train my pokemons to a competitive team.

Typically, I just plow through the reruns of games, but if I'm playing it for the first time, I will take my time. Regardless though, I have always picked 5 guys and only raised them (1 hm slave usually). Sometimes if I'm lucky, I will be able to distribute my HM's well enough to where I can have 6 different guys to raise.

The craziest thing I have ever done is run through Red version in Spanish. On ebay, Red version was for sale and it was like a dollar cheaper than the cheapest English version so I went ahead and bought it. The seller also double checked with me, but I told him that I would not need to read to be able to crush the game. I beat it in about 10 hours mostly with Blastoise and Pidgeot. I made sure to keep animation on, so I knew what the moves would be and then I selected them to always be at the bottom of my list from most important to least important at the top. When it was time to learn a new move, I went ahead and deleted the first move. It was quite a fun experience.

This is my Heart Gold playthrough:

I get my starter, dont give a crap about natures (ingame only), then I trek through the game
I go to the Sprout tower and found a Gastly (then I thought, what would be a traditional pair up with Gastly?) Abra of course!

Then at the 3rd gym my team was

-Quilava
-Kadabra
-Haunter

I normally pair up pokemon together depending on them. If I had a Nidoking, then I would put in a Nidoqueen (get my drift?)

Also I never ever use Ubers ingame, I just dont like the idea of a 10 year old posseing a pokemon that can control the sun!

I also put the battle mode to shift, so It would be like competitive battling!

My Elite team was:

-Typlosion
-Gengar (This was my absolute powerhouse)
-Alakazam
-Nidoking
-Nidoqueen

I never ever, use valuable TMs on my ingame pokemon

I don't really pay attention to natures, IVs, EVs, etc. But I do try to use good natures. For choosing a team, I like what looks cool. I try to have some type advantages. For example, I won't use too many of one type. I don't really cheat except after I beat the E4 or Red I might get lazy and use Master Balls on some legendaries (roaming legends in particular). I don't really like speeding through it either. I take my time and enjoy the game, it's a nice break from compettitive!

I agree. I also agree that using ubers is no fun. To me, there is no point of playing if your going to run through with nothing but a lv 75 Mewtwo or something like that. Regular Pokes make it relatively a challenge. My main teams are just 3-4 of my favorite Pokemon I can't normally use (i.e. Megainium, Ursaring)

I'm a huge fan of solo-runs. But with very weak pokemon like Dunsaprce, Sentret, Nidoran, or Tediursa. I dont evolve them and dont teach them TM's. it makes a wonderful challenge and it's such a great feeling to beat Lance with a level 76 Sentret. Also non-evolved-runs are pretty fun. My non-evolved team in platinum for example was Murkrow, Elekid, Goldeen, Abra and Geodude.

When playing Yellow (didn't get Red and Blue) I took professor Oak literally and tried to catch every single poke.To me this is the best way of playing as you can actually say at the end you are the pokemon master. Of course as more generations come out it has become harder but I generally go with a balanced team of 5 and a HM slave. I generally go through the game like I was a 5 year old reliving his first experience of the game with pokemon that have the shittiest IVs, EVs, Natures and movesets (but for some reason work in game) and then reliving the adventure but this time trying to accumulate pokemon that can be used competitively.

You make me feel old... I was in 7th grade when Pokemon came out.

Solo runs sound fun, but I prefer dual team runs, they make more of a connection. Especially when the two are related, like a Seviper/Zangoose run. That's be so much more fun than Just a sentret(granted they are also far more capable, but the story in my head is amusing. It could be done with a Sandshrew/Ekans as they were opposite each other in game. That kind of thing.

Depends on the game, for diamond I used Infernape, Alakazam, an EV'ed (before E4) Crobat and EV'ed Milotic (I hate feebas).
For Platinum, just transfered a bunch of godly EV'ed pokes and plowed through it.

In SoulSilver though Im clearing it as if I didn't know a thing about EV/IV/BaseStats because that was the way to go when I played Silver, even though that costed me a particulary annoying Stall-until-out-of-PP fight Vs Morty (my whole team underleveled + Shadow ball/Hypnosis spam is a bitch)
Of course in all of them I use the classic HM slave (Strenght and Fly are passable, but Cut, Rock Smash and Defog? just no)

First post in a year or so(been playing Radiant Dawn)!

When I play ingame, I usually use a team with solid, easily picked up members that are easy to use. Usually, I sit in a grass patch and RNG abuse until I find something with a decent nature(I don't give a rat's ass about IV's)and ability. Sometimes, if I see something rare and I deem it worthy, I'll use it.

My latest recurring theme with nicknaming is that I name my posse after characters from Fire Emblem, usually from FE's 7, 8, and 9/10.

In Platinum, I started with Piplup and brought over eggs containing a Gible and Croagunk. IIRC, the Gible had EQ/Stone Edge and the Gunk had Cross Chop. I also had a Starly and Rotom somewhere.

My final team:
Ike(Emp), Tibarn(Raptor), Haar(Chomp), Knoll(Rotom), Marisa(Toxicroak)

All were Lv50 and Knoll was in Wash form.

By the way, I also picked pokemon of their coolness value, I thought Infernape is just awesome, but Typlosion is an overgrown Rat, and I considered bringing over a Chimchar from Platinum, but in the end I decided I should go with the gen 2 started since I never played GSC.

Come on, isnt Gengar pwnage looking. And Alakazam is just smartly awesome.

By the way in my playthrough through HG, I caught Ho-oh with a masterball, becuase I wasnt paying attention. And when I looked at the screen with my Masterball catching it, it was 10:00 pm I said stuff it, and saved the game

For Kanto I used my Brave Alakzam, Jolly Typlosion and my other crappy natured pokemon to smash Kanto, but I was 10-15 levels under Red, and I got smashed. Then I brang my EV trained comp. team, from Plat. in was 20 levels beneath his, and I smashed him 4-0, I wished I could of saved in my Battle Video

I generally plan out my team a little bit, so I know what Pokemon I'll have and when. I used to do a lot of mono-type runs, but I haven't done that in a long time. I don't bother breeding or searching for good natures etc, even if I do cringe when I see "Rash" as my Totodile's nature. Recently, I've tried going through with a slightly different challenge; no Pokemon centers. That's very difficult, but it's cool at the same time because you actually get to use Ethers.

I know I cringe too with the natures
come one...
Brave Alakazam
Jolly Typlosion

Who wouldnt cringe at that, they were the natures i had for them, then I caught another Abra, it was Brave as well!

By the way my Gengar was Naughty and my Nidoking was a Modest nature, and I was lucky enough to have my Nidoqueen as a Bold nature

No offense, but you guys really need to get a grip. Natures mean next to nothing in-game. My Quiet Butterfree was still able to outspeed most Pokemon that weren't insanely fast because no one outside of the Elite Four has any EVs.

Currently I'm doing challenges in game. They're rather fun, although I wasn't able to complete Nuzlocke.

natures mean something my dear friend, my serious scyther had a horrible time with lance when my adamant one had a easy time, the boost in power made sure i would get those ohkos and 2hkos while not getting hit by that FREAKING fire blast or FREAKING blizzard or even maybe FREAKING thunder.

My runs.

I ran Pearl seriously, had a reasonably evenly levelled team. For SS I'm using the good 'ole 4 poke + 2 Slaves, and I've bred them and EV'd them. Still having a blast, mostly because I didn't trade over until I had the first 8 badges. I went into E4 underlevelled and had to aqua ring + leftovers stall with Lanturn to raise pretty much my entire team back up.

Team is:

Salamence (Jolly bulkymence /w DD)
Lucario (Modest + Expert belt with type coverage moves.)
Lanturn (Specwall)
Leafeon (Impish Physwall/staller with wish/yawn)
Tropius + Bibarel for HM's.

If you ever want to just smash through a game, (hullo platinum!) breed a jolly or adamant medicham, give it expert belt and put psycho cut/ice punch/thunder punch/fire punch on there. Instawin (and doesn't need legendary SR'ing.)

I catch the first five pokemon I see, and add them to my team. Then as I progress through the game I begin to find my strengths and weaknesses, and gradually axe the poor performers in favour of new ones. So my team is constantly evolving and becoming stronger.

Generally though there's a good chance I'll beat the Elite Four with at least a few of Crobat, Golem, Gyrados and the starting bird pokemon (along with my starter of course). They're common as muck and hit hard.

In SS, I used three Pokemon and two HM slaves throughout the story. I took my sweet time and did lots of Battle Tower and other things before I finished story mode. That's why I chose to play with three leads instead of one or two, for Battle Tower.

Gengar/SD Scizor/DD Gyarados

They were lv. 61 when I finished the Elite 4, and they were lv. 81 when I beat Red.
