Hurricane Irene

It's eerie in New Haven.

Slept till noon and through most of the storm. Overall, however, it's still overcast, which sets up a fantastic setting, akin to those post-apocalyptic surviver movies. The storm swept up a ton of branches onto the streets, giving an abandoned look to the Yale campus.

We saw a few other people walking around and it was strangely romantic, like the repopulating of a jilted town.

Posting from my phone to say 1/2 of households in ri lost power including my own, however there wasnt much damage in my area. However supposedly it could take up to a week for non critical areas to regain power.

As anticipated, it wasn't that big of a deal over here. Irene decided to leave NH mostly alone, so the most we got was some rain and minor things like leaves in the streets and knocked over basketball hoops. Power never went down for a bit.

We were pretty lucky. Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky when it came to property damage and the few casualties.

this is long island SOUND (aka no current/waves) (taken off da facebook)

Yeah I saw Coney Island getting hammered with 15-20 footers.

I was in Hershey dodging the storm. Rode coasters from 11 am to 5 pm and then Irene finally opened up on us. Second Hurricane I was in, ever (the last was in 1999). My family in New Jersey had the eye of the Hurricane pass directly over them which I would have to say must've been the coolest thing ever.

I am back at my apartment in Northern Virginia and the only stuff here is some broken branches and tossed around signage. apparently 8 people in Virginia/ North Carolina died and something like 1.4 million are without power, ouch.

Yeah, like 100,000 people here are out of power iirc. I thankfully got mine back 3 hours ago.

I had no electricity for two days but they had electricity 100 yards up the road and there was no electrical wire damage between these points.

Things just make so much sense sometimes.

Still don't have internet, posting this from my phone that finally has enough reception to get on the internet. Wasn't too bad, just a big inconvenience

Man, this hurricane was seriously over hyped. I live in Brooklyn (the low lying area of Brooklyn) and absolutely nothing happened here. Sure, a few twigs were here and there, and the wind was particularly strong, but there were no floods, fallen trees, cars damaged, people hurt or even people panicking in my neighborhood.

This.

The only thing I was nervous about when Irene was arriving was the fact that Con-edison was going to shut down the electricity due to a risk... (I forgot why, it had to do with hurricane damaging something)

So, I think the hard question to be asked by all Americans in the wake of Hurricane Irene is, "Can we really afford to rebuild the Eastern Seaboard since it was built in an area susceptible to flooding in a hurricane?"

Everyone is going on about how "over-hyped" the storm was because they only lost their precious internet for a day or so, but the LA Times reports damage over ten billion dollars, oh and people died.

But apparently people dying doesn't matter any more so whatever

It was just one person that died
Oh and another

So okay just 45 people minimum

irene was pretty lackluster for my area, it kind of stopped raining by the time I woke up and it was fine to walk around campus by midafternoon... HOWEVER irene did open up a pretty big/deep sink hole on campus which is pretty cool!

on the bright side, you can now wear capri pants without looking like a douche

this is never true

While I'm absolutely positive that there was damage and flooding in other parts of the United States, North GA.... Absolutely nothing. Not a cloud in the sky the day it hit.

Parts of Northern New Jersey are being evacuated due to delayed flooding from the Hurricane. Kind of laughing at the fact that the eye of the hurricane passed directly over my hometown.

I had no electricity for TWO DAYS MAN. I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE

It will be about a week and a half for my area bro...

In CT we didn't get hit really hard, just enough to take out a few trees and leave tons of people without power (there are still a decent amount of towns where 100% of people are without power).
