watched upstream color today, 9/10. not as fun as primer is, but a very beautiful and well thought out film. thought the plot was fairly straight forward despite what some critics are saying, but carruth is amazing...i would highly recommend it, this was probably my favorite film of the year so far
I thought there was a lot of really dead points in it, just tons of shots where there was no dialogue, no plot advancement, just music and pretty things, not any characters doing anything. It was an interesting movie, but I found it frustrating because it seemed to last longer than necessary and the plot was hard to follow.

So I just saw Great Gatsby, and I'm too tired to go into a detailed review of it.

I thought it was an amazing film, beautiful, tense and lovely to watch. Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton were fantastic, Tobey Maguire was perfectly casted (His role was basically as an observer, he's not the best actor but he's a fitting observer) and DiCaprio was alright. The soundtrack was brilliant, I am amazed at how somebody couldn't like that soundtrack.

*****

Just the new Fast and Furious(or whatever its called) and it's pretty good. Nothing to say about it. Seen all the other F&F movies so i knew what i was going to watch. I think they are getting better tbh. Now that they decided to take the characters to an alternate world, the action sequences are funny and really really interesting. Wiout the need to try and make it realistic.

because the rap and dubstep used is incredibly uncharacteristic of the time period and wasn't even used as just background music but was actually implied to be the music played at the party and in the cars

the only music that was appropriate for the time period was rhapsody in blue which was used because it's a quintessential jazz piece that a wider audience will easily recognize

and if you really want to get nitpicky you'll realize that the great gatsby is set in 1922 while rhapsody in blue was not written until 1924, making the ONE jazz piece used in the movie canonically impossible

obviously most people won't be as bothered by the choice of music as I was but I found it to be one of the movie's biggest flaws (i could go on but i won't)

i also saw the new star trek recently and i loved it

Gatsby

Let me start off my addressing something that relates to this film, but more to any film adaptation based off a book, play, or any other medium: a film doesn't need to be related in any way, shape, or form to its source material. Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a great book, but the film must be looked at as an individual piece, a film.

Now onto the actual review...

There's a quote from DiCaprio's Gatsby where he says "All you've got is money!" This is ironic in two ways. The first is that Gatsby appears to have a literal infinite amount of possessions, monetary and physical, and it seems like a contradiction coming from him. But the second reason is that this quote sums up the film in a nutshell: if the budget was removed, we'd have a cliched romance film. And that's what we have.

Luhrmann's direction is atrocious; with only Edgerton and Mulligan really being great. DiCaprio's performance appears good but rather uninspired, and I can't speak much for the rest of the cast (and that's coming from a Maguire fan). It's really a shame because the script is very good, both the directly adapted parts from the novel and the original writing.

If you hadn't guessed from the previews (or logic), the film is incredibly flashy and in your face. Some will defend the movie, suggesting this is representative of the Jazz Age, which I feel could be a possibility. But in reality, it seems to only have been done to draw in audiences. Don't even get me started on the use of hip-hop music in a period film, as well as the obscenely short dresses that are common throughout, and the "everyone is beautiful" syndrome that too many modern blockbusters seem to suffer with.

In spite of all it's flaws...well, no, it's still bad. But what's worse is that it's tailored to the audience, not to being a good film. This shows that it could have easily been a better movie; especially with an ensemble like that, a 105 million dollar budget, and considering it's adapted off of what's considered to be one of the greatest American books of all time.

So, all in all, Gatsby comes off as a miss, a traditional romance that lacks any subtlety, tension, or drama of any kind. It's a bit unpredictable at times, but this is forgotten in the over-melodrama of the rest of this shoddy period piece.

Rating: 3/10

essentially, you just spent 4 paragraphs saying "I don't get Baz Luhrmann's style"

which is okay

Because while you (and Tarantino), as a goy,
this is off topic, but i was reading back over my old posts and got angry, why the hell do you assume i'm a goy, and why the fuck would you lump me in with tarantino?

whatever

i agree with all of the negative criticism about star trek and i love john cho for repeatedly asking why we had to whitewash khan

Yeah that is a pretty interesting cast of live actors. Sure wish we'd start hiring voice actors for our voice acting movies though.

Saw a bunch of new movies today, will give a short rundown on 'em. In order of watching:

Trance: really decent movie, albeit a little complicated every now and then. The acting is tight, the story interesting enough to easily sit through all the way to the end. The movie seems to borrow a bit from Inception every now and then; what is real, what is fake, right until the ending.
Recommended? Definitely not for everyone, but if you enjoyed something like Inception, chance is you'll like this too.

Epic: at first I was hesitant, as it looks like just another kids' movie, but I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Epic is very pleasant on the eyes; the animation is absolutely superb, the lighting is great, and it's a very colourful movie altogether. The music is fantastic, too. The story is surrealistic, as are most animation movies, but that doesn't make it any less likable.
Recommended? Most definitely. While you're at it, take your younger brother or sister, they'll enjoy it too.

Superman: Man of Steel: Have you seen Battleship, or the latest Transformers movie? Man of Steel reminded me greatly of these movies, especially regarding the pacing. The premise of the movie is decent, but the overall story is weak, and when drawn out over 2.5 hours, the movie becomes tedious really quick. It's all a bit too 'epic', fighting scenes are a bit too explosive and last too long. The acting is decent, but the characters are shallow, making this quite a boring movie.
Recommended? If superheroes are your thing, then maybe, otherwise, meh.

After Earth: Is it M. Night Shamalamablehbleh's great return? No it's not, and it's far from it. The story is so simple you can predict the whole thing from the start, and the acting is sub-par as well. Most of the movie is Will Smith sitting in a chair, and his son Jaden running through a jungle while making annoying sounds. Special effects are neat, but special effects alone do not make a movie.
Recommended? Nope.

This Is The End was one of the most pleasantly surprising movies I've seen so far this year. I haven't been that shocked at how good a comedy was since 21 Jump Street. The all-star cast lowered my expectations, as most movies featuring that many celebrities end up being terrible - This Is The End, however, was really really funny.

Some flaws: It's definitely tailored to an 18-35ish age range, and to a primarily male audience. The plot also requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, but the ridiculousness adds to the humor. Michael Cera and Emma Watson both appear briefly in the movie, but their parts were hilarious.

Personally, it's the best movie I've seen so far this year, and definitely the funniest. Would recommend.

Re: After Earth, I saw a review on IMDB with the sickest burn of all time:

If [Jayden Smith] sold popcorn at the theatre, he would be contributing more to the film industry than he did with his acting.

Sick. Burn.

Vertigo:watched this a few days ago. Never seeing this before and knowing nothing beforehand I was expecting a straightforward thriller. Man was I wrong. Hitchcock has managed to make a movie that can unnerve and fascinate you. The first 2 acts had me engrossed the whole time. They really made me wonder what was going on. The 3rd act was masterfully creepy. The ending was tragic, with some ambiguity from the last shot that makes you wonder what happens to James Stewart's character. After watching it I listened to an old interview with Hitchcock, and I found out it was actaully a metaphore for being emasculated. All in all an extremely chilling, yet fascinating film.

Upstream Color (2013) is already on Netflix so I recommend people check it out. Really great visuals and abstract scenes that actually make coherent sense and is surprisingly logical once you analyze it a bit.

Yeah, I really liked this one. I'm looking forward to Shane Carruth's next project Modern Ocean.

Took the time to watch it, and I really liked it. It gave off a very Eternal Sunshine-esque vibe, but darker.

While the trailer for the new Man of Steel roared with entertainment and excitement, the film whimpered with the enthusiasm of a three year-old. In truth, the film could've been a lot worse. Previous editions had failed to capture the power and riveting nature of Superman. This film gradually managed to achieve that, but it wasn't without its faults.

The film indulged in destruction. Action scenes were never without a building or two crashing to the ground, windows being ripped off or stone pillars breaking in half. Sure, action is good. Right? Sadly, too much action leads to a boring, poorly directed film (see: Total Recall (remake)). Whilst it certainly wasn't as bad as Total Recall's unsightly remake, parts were unfortunately reminiscent.

A sad side effect of the relentless action was that the few sentimental scenes didn't come into fruition. Instead, the film became boring and drab, its serious nature wearing off on the viewer. Superhero flicks, such as Iron Man 3, kept humour to keep the audience entertained; Zack Snyder's choice to exclude it was poor, and one of the key factors as to why this film will annoy rather than impress.

That's not to say that the film was entirely bad; each actor played their part sufficiently, Cavill being one of the better Supermen. And if you get past the Spy Kids-esque speed of the action scenes, the action is great. Unfortunately, a combination of action upon action, cliches being thrown at you and a drab overall feel to it, this film is very much a forgettable one.

4.2/10

I don't know, I think a hero as silly as Superman can't be taken seriously in this day and age. I always disliked Superman. A fictitious character not even I could take serious. I think all these dark and more realistic hero movies have made us become harsher against anything with him on it.

Realistic hero movies?

There's nothing even vaguely realistic about any hero movie.

Meant more serious. Although something like Batman and ironman have tried to be more realistic.

I'm surprised by Thor success actually. It's probably just Chris Hemsworth being a damn sexy beast tho.

Guys, I saw Tree of Life the other day... It is perhaps my favorite film ever (Lawrence of Arabia and Bicycle Thieves give it some competition). I know a lot of people hate it, but a lot love it. What are your opinions?
Even if you dont like the movie you have to admit it has a great poster.
