Jynx has a lot of unique features that differentiate it from other Psychic-types such as Alakazam and Starmie. For one, Jynx is the second fastest sleep inducer after the unreliable Gengar, making it a fantastic potential lead option that can incapacitate its checks by making them fall asleep. STAB Blizzard also allows Jynx to win the matchup versus Pokemon such as Exeggutor, Rhydon, and Zapdos. This is all in addition to the standard expectations of a fantastic Psychic-type: access to the powerful STAB Psychic and a high Special stat. Jynx also has its faults, though. Despite its key resistances to Ice- and Psychic-type attacks, Jynx can become easily trampled over by physical attacks, namely from Normal-types such as Tauros and Snorlax, due to its pitiful HP and Defense stats. While its key resistances to Blizzard and Psychic may say otherwise, the main way Jynx provides defensive utility is being the switch-in for predicted sleep-inducing moves. Additionally, nearly all teams run at least two solid checks to Jynx between Chansey and either Starmie or Alakazam, sometimes both. Due to the omnipresence of these checks, their access to Thunder Wave and reliable recovery, and Jynx's susceptibility to paralysis and being worn down over time, Jynx's role is undermined. Jynx can use Rest to restore its health and alleviate its paralysis, burning off sleep turns against Pokemon that can't do much back to it like a paralyzed BoltBeam Starmie. However, doing so opens itself up to a slew of physical attackers such as Tauros and Snorlax that can freely switch into it while it's asleep.

Set Description
=========

Jynx's primary goal is to use Lovely Kiss and incapacitate the foe's lead such as Starmie or Alakazam. Blizzard is Jynx's strongest STAB option against certain Psychic-types such as Alakazam and nails Pokemon such as Zapdos and Exeggutor. It can also be used to fish for a potential freeze while scouting which of the opponent's Pokemon has a sleep-inducing move. Psychic rounds out Jynx's coverage, receives STAB, and hits Pokemon such as Gengar and Lapras. It also has the potential to lower a foe's Special stat, which can come in handy to more convincingly win matchups versus special attackers, notably an opposing paralyzed Chansey. Rest provides Jynx with a way of restoring its health and alleviating paralysis. While Jynx doesn't have too many opportunities to use Rest due to its lackluster physical bulk, it can use Rest and burn sleep turns on more passive foes such as Chansey, Alakazam, and Exeggutor lacking Double-Edge. Burning off sleep turns is not always easy, however, as generally speaking most teams pack anywhere from two to three solid checks to Jynx, leaving it liable to exploitation. Jynx is primarily used as a lead due to its above-average Speed tier and access to a fairly accurate sleep-inducing move. However, Jynx can also be used mid-game due to its high Special and fantastic offensive dual STAB combination of Blizzard and Psychic. Note that removing statused Pokemon such as paralyzed Alakazam and Chansey from play allows for Jynx to more freely use Lovely Kiss. The ideal way to utilize Jynx is to put one check to sleep with Lovely Kiss, potentially freeze one of Jynx's remaining checks, and then switch it into potential sleep inducers.

Other Options
=============

As previously stated, Jynx's most useless move is Rest, and therefore if one wishes to use one of these other options, it should usually replace Rest. Ice Beam can be used over Blizzard to give Jynx more PP on its Ice-type STAB option. Running Ice Beam can also come in handy in long, drawn-out games to secure a freeze against one of the opponent's Pokemon, although the drop in power is noticeable. A healthy Jynx can use Counter to improve its matchup against Tauros and Snorlax; it is situational, and Jynx has to be at a sizable amount of health for this strategy to be pulled off, although it can also be used after taking damage from a previous turn and the foe switching out. Mimic can be utilized to potentially copy an important utility or coverage move such as Thunder Wave, Soft-Boiled, Recover, or Thunderbolt from one of Jynx's switch-ins such as Chansey or Starmie. However, forfeiting Rest for only a chance to copy a useful coverage move is somewhat risky and still leaves Jynx prone to being paralyzed. Body Slam can be utilized to fish for paralysis against incoming switch-ins like Alakazam and Chansey, although it is not guaranteed, cannot paralyze Snorlax, and is fired off of Jynx's exceedingly below-average Attack stat.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Gengar**: While Gengar cannot switch in safely on Jynx whatsoever, it can put Jynx out of commission from the very beginning of the game with Hypnosis. Gengar is also faster than Jynx and can threaten to use Explosion at any time.

**Starmie, Chansey, and Alakazam**: Starmie, Chansey, and Alakazam can sponge all of Jynx's attacks, paralyze it with Thunder Wave, and restore their health with Soft-Boiled or Recover, acting as some of the most consistent Jynx checks after one of their teammates has been put to sleep. Although they are all susceptible to being frozen with Blizzard, they can whittle Jynx down and force it to use Rest early, limiting the number of chances Jynx has of freezing something.

**Normal-types**: Tauros and Snorlax can take advantage of Jynx's low HP and Defense and love switching into it after it uses Rest, forcing in a teammate to take the incoming Body Slam. Tauros can also pick up the KO against Jynx with Hyper Beam with a little prior damage.

**Bulky Water-types**: Slowbro, like Starmie, resists Jynx's dual STAB combination of Ice and Psychic and can use Jynx as a setup opportunity to boost with Amnesia and Rest off all the damage it has taken. Lapras is another great example of an offensive check to Jynx despite its lack of reliable recovery due to its 4x resistance to Blizzard and access to Body Slam, although one of its teammates will need to have already been put to sleep. The Jynx user may also decide to trade damage off against Lapras with the end goal of revenge killing it later with another teammate such as Tauros or Alakazam. Getting too much damage off on these Pokemon after Jynx puts something to sleep will often lead to the defensive core of a team crumbling.

Overview

Replace "one of the fastest sleep inducers" with 'the second fastest sleep inducer after the unreliable Gengar'; it's important to stress that no other sleepers outpace it.

STAB Blizzard is very powerful and it dissuades threatening attackers like Tauros and Rhydon from abusing Jynx's low defense, but Chansey is one of the best Jynx switch-ins out there, you can't really play around the freeze chance.

Susceptible to paralysis yes, but Starmie, Alakazam, and Chansey are going to be the pokemon applying it most commonly, not Slowbro.

The last bullet point about LK inaccuracy and Blizzard PP is pretty unnecessary, neither are particularly relevant drawbacks.

Set Description

Lovely Kiss definitely doesn't incapacitate Snorlax and Lapras very often. The most common scenario is sleeping the opponent's lead turn 1, usually one of Starmie or Alakazam.

Mention Chansey specifically when you talk about Psychic drops, as they can somewhat reliably allow Jynx to 1v1 a paralyzed Chansey which is an important perk.

Mention that Jynx can easily rest off on Exeggutor, especially if it lacks Double-Edge.

Remove the last paragraph, it's pretty much both incorrect and unnecessary.

Team Options

RBY analyses do not have this section, as per the skeleton provided; remove it.

Other Options

Body Slam is worthless, remove it. Mention Ice Beam over Blizzard for higher accuracy and PP, which can come in handy in drawn out games to secure a freeze.

Checks and Counters

Mention Gengar for the ability to outspeed and put Jynx out of commission turn 1 thanks to Hypnosis, despite it not really being able to switch in on Jynx.

Implement those changes and I will give my check.

Mention Ice Beam over Blizzard for higher accuracy and PP, which can come in handy in drawn out games to secure a freeze.
  • Ice Beam can be used alongside Blizzard to give Jynx more PP for its Ice-type STAB options. Running Blizzard and Ice Beam together can also come in handy in long, drawn-out games to secure a freeze against one of the opponent's Pokemon.
Don't say that both moves can be used on the same set. If you do that and drop Rest like you said, Jynx will get beaten earlier and not last long enough for the "long, drawn-out games". TIN said Ice Beam can be used INSTEAD of Blizzard.

You exaggerate how useless Rest is. It allows Jynx to stall lots of special attackers (Chansey, Starmie without Surf, Alakazam, Eggy without DE/Hyper Beam). The downside is just that doing this allows your opponent to bring in threats like Snorlax, Tauros or even Zapdos while you are resting.

I would seperate the special walls in the checks and counters section. Chansey is by far the most common Jynx check after you put the opposing lead to sleep, mainly because said lead often is Starmie or Alakazam and unless the opponent is using the other one too, Chansey is used more often for it.

"standard Psychic-type switch-ins such as Exeggutor and Tauros"

no. rephrase that paragraph, no need to use "standard psychic-type switch-ins", especially when half the tier is psychic types so it's a term that doesn't really make much sense in the first place. use "it allows jynx to win the exeggutor match up while scaring away potential threats such as tauros and snorlax", or something along those lines

seconding fomg in both his points about running both ice beam and blizzard (terrible idea), and on how your wording is too strong on rest, it's definitely not a bad move.

once those last adjustments are made, QC 1/2

However, Jynx can also be used mid-game due to its high Special and fantastic offensive dual STAB combination of Blizzard and Psychic.
Maybe point out that if you plan to use Jynx midgame, it is a good idea trying to remove pokemon that can block Lovely Kiss e.g. exploding with Exeggutor vs paralysed Alakazam/Chansey when they are the only paralysed mons your opponent has.

  • A healthy Jynx can use Counter to improve its matchup against Tauros and Snorlax, although its situational and Jynx has to be at a sustainable amount of health for this strategy to be pulled off.
Mention that not only the direct matchup is relevant but also that you can Counter moves from previous turns if the opponent switches.

**Normal-types**: Tauros and Snorlax can take advantage of Jynx's low HP and Defense, 2HKOing it with Body Slam. Tauros can also potentially pick up the KO against Jynx with Hyper Beam with prior damage, while Amnesia variants of Snorlax can use Jynx as an opportunity to set up.
Make it clear that Tauros doesn't want to take damage switching into Jynx and often doesn't even want to stay in for a 1v1 unless Jynx is in KO range.

I think your analysis is decent overall but you could still explain the advantages and disadvantages of Jynx better in the metagame context.
Jynx is an extremely reliable sleep inducing lead and after using Lovely Kiss, it can try to freeze whatever switches into Jynx on the next turn against which it is usually not immediately threatened by (Chansey, Starmie, Alakazam). The issue is just that outside of putting something to sleep and hoping for a freeze, Jynx gets easily checked and has no defensive utility whatsoever. It can be very dangerous if either 1. your opponent doesn't have many checks to it and you put one to sleep and freeze the other (e.g. Starmie and Chansey on a team with Snorlax, Tauros, Eggy and Rhydon) or if you remove one check with Explosion and put the other to sleep or in some endgame situations but Jynx is rarely used for those.
Starmie, Chansey and Alakazam are on many RBY teams and all handle Jynx reasonably well. Due to the only recovery option being Rest, the opponent can often exploit a sleeping Jynx more easily than let's say an Alakazam being forced to click Recover.

EB0LA

Banned deucer.
I would slash Rest with Counter as the 4th slot move in the "Special Attacker" set, as both are imo, equally viable.

Also, small addition to Other Options section for Jynx's 4th attack. Jynx can use Mimic & Body Slam over Rest/Counter.
Mimic: After the sleep T1, if opponent goes Chansey, Jynx can mimic a Twave/Sboil; If opponent goes Starmie, Jynx can mimic Tbolt/Twave/Recover.
Body Slam: Potentially spreading paralysis.

I'd rank it Rest ≥ Counter > Mimic > Body Slam

I disagree with that. I think Rest is far too valuable since it allows Jynx to 1v1 Chansey and fish for freezes without compromising it's ability to be sleep foddered vs SingChansey or StunEggy. It's a good OO but shouldn't be on the main set. It should be pointed out that Counter works better if Jynx is used as a non-lead when it can potentially threaten to put a pokemon to sleep after an opposing pokemon used Explosion.

I am fine with the other OOs Eb0la suggested as long as you explain why they are generally considered rather bad.

The fact that Jynx has little utility besides putting a mon to sleep and trying to freeze something that switches in belongs in the overview in my opinion and not in the set description. Mention how basically all teams have at least two mons that check Jynx really well (Chansey + Starmie/Alakazam) which all have an immediate form of recovery which affects the usefulness of Jynx.
Jynx also has access to STAB Blizzard, allowing Jynx to win the matchup versus Exeggutor while scaring away potential threats such as Tauros and Snorlax.
If you want to mention the Tauros/Lax matchup here, you should elaborate more on it.
Jynx is also very much susceptible to paralysis from users such as Chansey and Alazakam and has no way to restore itself outside of Rest, compared to other Psychic-types such as Starmie and the aforementioned Alakazam.
I'd go a lot more in depth about the Starmie/Alakazam and Chansey matchup. You should explain that Jynx can also relatively safely burn sleep turns and stall a paralysed Starmie lacking Surf.
In general, it should be more clear which pokemon check Jynx defensively (switch into it safely barring freezes) but can't do much back except forcing it to Rest (and allowing you to capitalize on the sleeping Jynx with physical attackers) and which pokemon actually pressure Jynx offensively.
Lapras is another great example of an offensive check to Jynx despite its lack of reliable recovery due to its four times resistance to Blizzard and access to Body Slam, although one of its teammates will need to have already been sleep foddered.
If you want to mention Lapras as offensive check, explain it in more detail since usually it would be a favorable trade for the Jynx user to damage Lapras with Psychic and put it in range of let's say Tauros Hyper Beam (assuming no Rest Lapras).
I'd list Ice Beam before Body Slam/Mimic and likely even Counter since that's arguably Jynx best OO.
while Amnesia variants of Snorlax can use Jynx as an opportunity to set up
If Lax doesn't have Rest, it doesn't want to take unecessary damage while trying to setup vs a (unparalysed) Jynx and even Rest variants don't really like risking crits.
Alakazam should get it's own place in the counter section or be merged with Chansey and Starmie (they all have immediate recovery options).

Overall I feel you are trying to much to explain based on general principles and theories instead of how Jynx is actually used in practice.

Minor nitpick, but calling Lapras and Slowbro "additional special walls" in C&C isn't quite accurate, since they aren't really special walls- maybe just bulky waters? Though I suppose that could be argued to include Cloy, which definitely isn't a check
  • The ideal way to utilize Jynx is to put one check asleep with Lovely Kiss, and then either freeze one Jynx's remaining checks or remove it with a teammate's Explosion, such as Exeggutor or Snorlax. This opens up avenues late-game for Jynx to clean up.
This really doesn't sound accurate to me. Jynx will never realistically sweep unless you're running some hyper-unorthodox gimmick team. It almost always absorbs paralysis in the course of using LK and doing other Jynx things, which prevents it from sweeping, then it has to Rest off damage, which is just invites the opponent to punch its face in, not exactly setting up for a sweep. The biggest reason it doesn't work late game is that Tauros exists and is the gatekeeper of viability for lategame sweepers- Jynx fails this test miserably.

Honestly Jynx's role beyond sleeping something is to control status early game. It has reasonable power and can threaten a freeze which enables it to force plays, while it's usable as a status absorber, primarily blocking Egg's sleep. Sure, it's easy to bypass, but it does still fulfill that function

change set name to Lead Sleeper, jynx is best played as a lead who can reliably get its sleep off and while you mention that it prefers to be a lead, the degree to which it wants to be able to click lovely kiss before anything else is done to the opponent's team isn't really felt. jynx struggles to punch through paralyzed chansey and starmie, and is borderline useless if one of those mons gets statused before it can sleep
Jynx also has its faults though. Despite its key resistances to Ice- and Psychic-type attacks, Jynx can become easily trampled over by physical attacks, namely from Normal-types such as Tauros and Snorlax, due to its pitiful HP and Defense stats. While its key resistances to Blizzard and Psychic may say otherwise, Jynx provides its team no defensive utility whatsoever, meaning its hard to fit onto teams.
jynx's defensive utility is sleep fodder. the ideal line with jynx is sleep turn 1, fish for freeze a couple times while scouting out which pokemon likely have a sleep move, and safely getting rest cycled so that it can absorb sleep for its teammates. a jynx which has done those things has performed a critical job for its teammates and likely given its team a comfortable lead, and often the opponent might not have better options (sing chansey with only ice beam, exeggutor with only psychic being the primary options that jynx shuts down, though jynx does decently enough into eggy with normal moves as well).

the counters section should be rewritten to accurately describe the lines which occur in games. the primary counter is gengar; faster hypnosis is the only (good) way to stop the jynx user's gameplan, of sleep something and then forget about having to sleep something for the rest of the game. aside from gengar, singular mons checking jynx is an inefficient way to respond to it. the general strategy is to paralyze it with your lead before it sleeps something, sponge attacks with a resist like chansey or starmie after your lead is slept, force jynx to rest as fast as possible to reduce the odds of getting frozen, and then pressure it out and get a body slam on a teammate with tauros >>> snorlax. tauros is preferred for a couple reasons, namely his crit rate and the fact that he outspeeds chansey (and threatens hyper beam should the chansey user stay in). special emphasis should be placed on the fact that pokemon like snorlax, tauros, cloyster, and lapras should not be switched into powerful hits from jynx, as allowing jynx to get damage onto important defensive pieces after landing a sleep can often cripple a team's defensive core, and this is a frequent mistake from inexperienced players.

body slam should not mention chansey because it is jynx's worst move against chansey. it has slight value in paralyzing starmie and alakazam, but only after it has slept something. it notably does less damage than either psychic or blizzard against both starmie and chansey. it's absolutely atrocious but it can stay because OO is allowed to have really bad options when there is nothing better.

any mentions of how to provide support for jynx should be removed, as jynx is very much a supporter. resources spent supporting jynx in the builder could be better utilized in some other manner.

Body Slam can be utilized to fish for paralysis against incoming switch-ins like Alakazam and Chansey, although it is not guaranteed, cannot paralyze Snorlax, and is fired off of Jynx's exceedingly below-average Attack stat.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Gengar**: While Gengar cannot switch in safely on Jynx whatsoever, it can put Jynx out of commission from the very beginning of the game with Hypnosis. Gengar is also faster than Jynx and can threaten to use Explosion at any time.

**Starmie, Chansey, and Alakazam**: Starmie, Chansey, and Alakazam can sponge all of Jynx's attacks, paralyze Jynx it with Thunder Wave, and restore their health with Soft-Boiled or Recover, acting as some of the most consistent Jynx checks after one of their teammates has been put to sleep. Although they are all susceptible to being frozen with Blizzard, they can whittle Jynx down and force it to use Rest early, limiting the number of chances Jynx has of freezing something.

**Normal-types**: Tauros and Snorlax can take advantage of Jynx's low HP and Defense and love switching into Jynx it after it uses Rest, forcing in a teammate to take the incoming Body Slam.
