Kurimugan

--------------------------

[Overview]

  • Poor speed and limited movepool means Kurimugan will probably see nowhere near as much use as some of his Dragon bretheren.
  • Holds the title of slowest fully-evolved Dragon which can be turned to his advantage when used in Trick Room teams.
  • One of only 2 pure fully-evolved Dragon type Pokemon.
[SET]
name: Trick Room Sweeper
move 1: Outrage
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Fire Fang
move 4: Rock Slide / Crunch / Dragon Claw
item: Choice Band
ability: Rough Skin / Encourage
nature: Brave (0 Spe IV)
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

Set Comments:

  • Minimum Spe of 90, allows him to 'outrun' almost anything when Trick Room is in effect.
  • STAB Outrage backed up by 120 Atk and Choice Band allows Kurimugan to sweep late game once the enemy Steels have been removed.
  • Fire Fang and Earthquake provide coverage against Steels whilst the last slot is mainly filler.
Additional Comments:

  • Encourage grants a 30% boost to Fire Fang, Rock Slide and Crunch but you'll be using Outrage the majority of the time so Rough Skin may prove itself to be more useful.
Teammates & Counters:

  • Kurimugan relies on Trick Room so it is vital that his teammates provide it. Porygon2, Dialga, Rankurusu and Erufuun are all viable users of Trick Room.
  • As with all sweepers, Stealth Rock helps him obtain certain OHKOs. 252 HP Kyogre, for example, is never OHKO'd without Stealth Rock but falls nearly 60% of the time with Stealth Rock in play.
  • As Kurimugan is happiest when spamming Outrage, he appreciates teammates that can remove enemy Steel types such as Magnezone.
  • Defensive Steel types such as Skarmory and Forretress can switch into Outrage and waste Trick Room turns whilst setting up hazards or directly attacking Kurimugan.
  • Moves such as Protect and Fake Out can be used to waste Kurimugan's precious Trick Room turns.
[Team Options]

  • Kurimugan shuld be used exclusively on Trick Room teams where his access to a 120BP STAB attack with only one resistance makes him a formidable late-game cleaner.
  • Bronzong can switch into Ice And Dragon-type attacks aimed at Kurimugan and set up Trick Room. He also lures in Fire-type attacks that allow Kurimugan to switch in or can simply use Explosion to get Kurimugan in for free.
[Optional Changes]

  • Outside of Trick Room, Kurimugan will almost always be overshadowed by the likes of Garchomp, Salamence and Ononokusu.
  • Sucker Punch and Glare could be used in an attempt to patch up his speed.
  • Rugged Helmet can be partnered with Rough Skin to cause the opponent to lose 29% of their health anytime they hit Kurimugan with a contact move.
[Counters]

  • Skarmory, Forretress, Nattorei, Metagross, Steelix and Bronzong don't enjoy Choice Band boosted Fire Fang or Earthquake but their mere presence prevents Kurimugan from using his best move, Outrage.
  • Nattorei, Bronzong and Steelix get a special mention because their standard sets are even slower than Brave Kurimugan meaning they go first in Trick Room.
  • Powerful Ice Shard users can get around Trick Room and get a solid hit in on Kurimugan.
  • Scizor resists Outrage and can 2HKO with Choice Band Bullet Punch.
[Dream World]

  • Kurimugan gets Mold Breaker as a Dream World ability.
  • The main benefits of this will be the ability to hit Bronzong with Earthquake and ignore Garchomp's Sand Veil but the added damage that Rough Skin and Encourage provide are much more valuable.

Please use real bullet point lists, not just the ASCII character for a bullet in front of sentences. This is for organizational purposes. If you don't know how to do it, go to advanced edit and there's a button for it. You can also copy and paste it from other analyses.

Oh, that's how y'all do it. D'oh. :pirate:

Fixed the bullet points and cut down the larger sentences.

Damn, Kurimugan's options sure are limited :(. The only suggestion I can think of is giving Life Orb a small mention in Optional Changes. I'd say Choice Band as a whole is the better item since the only move this guy will be using the majority of the time is Outrage, but, with Life Orb, Kurimugan has the freedom to switch moves, which could prove useful in certain situations. Kurimugan also possesses some reasonable bulk, so the recoil given off from Life Orb shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Other than that, everything else looks great.

QC APPROVED (1/2)

If that's the case, it should also be stated that Encourage becomes the superior ability, to save yourself from recoil on Fire Fang and Rock Slide/Crunch.

You should also mention a phazing set with Dragon Tail and Rugged Helmet. This works good with Rest and Sleep Talk.

Edit: sorry, it doesn't get Sleep Talk, but it does get Suckr punch, so an "set up counter" set could be made.

Really needs a set dedicated to Glare. And he'd do a Dragon Tail phazing set really well, Rugged Helm or otherwise.

why not give it sucker punch

Been a while since this was touched. I know I QC approved this, but that was back when we didn't know much about BW and what would work or not. Now, I have enough experience to say that Kurimugan just isn't viable in OU.

Simply put, the more prominent Dragons, such as Garchomp, Latios, and Latias, completely overshadow the little guy. As long as they're allowed in OU, Kurimugan will continue to see little to no usage. Even then, he has to compete with others like Dragonite and Sazando. There's also Haxorus, who beats Kurimugan in every stat bar Special Defense. All of these Pokemon are significantly better from an offensive standpoint and possess great bulk as well. Kurimugan is also really, really, slow, and needs a lot of support if it wants to get anywhere.

Kurimugan does have some cool tricks, though. He has Encourage and is one of the two Dragons to get Sucker Punch, but the lack of Swords Dance and Dragon Dance makes this less appealing. All in all, Kurimugan just doesn't have enough to differentiate himself from other, better Dragons. It was also deemed uncompetitive in this thread (it's listed by its English name, Druddigon). SDS's post about it can be seen here if anyone's interested. Moving to L&O.
