SPOILERS! Legends ZA Data Dumps - Adding Info to OP

With the Megas I'm disappointed in stat-wise, I feel a lot of these are gonna come down to what ability they get.

If Mega :Greninja: doesn't retain Nasty Plot in Champions, it'll disappoint me the most. It's gonna need a bomb ability to make up for the fact it's worse than :Greninja-Ash: in every way other than Speed (and that latter could hold Choice Specs...).

Mega :Pyroar: gets +20 in everything? Why even bother with Attack, dude? At least 126 Speed is cool, it outspeeds :Weavile: by one point.

Mega :Malamar: might genuinely become the worst, lowest-ranking Mega of all time unless its ability comes in clutch. With these awful stats, the ability better be broken, like a Yawn on switch in or something lmfao

I cannot take the "worst Mega" comment seriously when Mega Audino exists and the fact Mega Malamar will almost certainly retain Contrary. Is going to be amazing? No, definitely not. But if I decide to bring Mega Mala to an OU match it will probably more consistently accomplish things than Mega Audino.

You see, I'd actually rather use Mega Audino. Has a significantly better defensive typing that doesn't make it 4x weak to U-turn, has much better bulk, and can Wish-pass to a teammate. It can even stay as base Audino in the early-mid game to take advantage of Regenerator pre-Mega, making it a great Knock Off-absorber. Mega Malamar in its current ability-less state comes nowhere close. Again, it's gonna come down to the ability, but if that ends up subpar, that's gonna be a yikes for me.

Mega :Victreebel: will also need a cool ability to stand out from Mega Venusaur. It's harder-hitting, but the power is meaningless when it's frailer and slower. Honestly, I kind of expected it to have the stat spread it ended up getting.

===========================

Now, onto the megas that DO interest me:

Mega :Chesnaught: sounds so much fun. STAB Body Press off base 172 Defense, plus Iron Defense, is going to make Mega Chesnaught hit like a freight train. Combine this with Leech Seed + Spiky Shield, or Synthesis, and this'll be a tough nut to crack. The lower Speed kinda sucks for singles, but I can see this being a monster in doubles on Trick Room teams.

Mega :Starmie: is very likely getting Pure Power, or a Starmie equivalent to said ability, and that makes Starmie probably my personal favorite. Not just because Pure Power is a strong ability, but how different it changes Starmie's playstyle as a whole. It's always been a fast Special threat ever since RBY. If it's base 100 Attack in Champions, it's attacking stats will effectively be 218 Attack and 130 Special Attack, with 120 Speed on top of that. Flip Turn in rain will go so stupid. Has the capacity to run mixed sets to deal with physical walls, and if it ends up keeping Bulk Up in Champions, it can be an awesome physical sweeper, too.

They could also pull the funniest shit ever and have Mega Starmie be the only Mega of all time to have over 100 points added to its BST, and run a different ability.

I love this goofy weirdo, strangely reminds me of the final majora fight in majora's mask

omfg, I love this thing :psysly:

I appreciate Mega :Skarmory: and Mega :Scolipede: in a similar way, in that they can utilize their base forms pre-mega to make the post-mega stage much stronger. Skarmory has Weak Armor to boost Speed by 2, along with Swords Dance. Scolipede on the other hand has Speed Boost pre-Mega. Although I do fear this'll make Mega Scolipede strapped for move slots, since it'll want Protect to guarantee a boost, I feel it'll be better without Speed Boost compared to Mega Sharpedo, who isn't nearly as bulky.

Mega :Floette-Eternal: just on the premise we can finally use this legally.

Mega :Barbaracle: being a base 140 Attack Shell Smasher will definitely be scary.

Mega :Delphox: sounds like a Fire-type Mega Alakazam; a fast Psychic-type Nasty Plot demon. Delphox also gets Expanding Force in SV, so while I can see Mega Alakazam giving it competition, Delphox stands out by blasting through Steel-types more reliably, much like Armarouge.

I'm going to end this post with this iykyk:

Very minor story spoiler relating to a PLA character:

"There are records of a man named Ingo providing guidance in the ways of Pokémon battle, but it is said that he simply vanished one day after stating, “It’s time for me to return.”

Yay Ingo!

Feraligatr looks a lot better in motion, I love that it looks like a giant Totodile head. Overall a really good crop of megas imo. The only one I’m slightly disappointed in is Excadrill since it looks a little goofy.

There are other completely viable bulky Wish passers (read: Alomomola) that are much much better than Mega Audino between not taking up the Mega slot, having actual longevity, and possessing an ability (lol Healer). Assuming Contrary (which is extremely likely), Mega Malamar doesn't really have a peer outside of Enamorus, and Contrary Superpower is a meme set for Enamorus because no Play Rough. Malamar at least has physical STABs. Give it Webs support to make the Mega work.

Again, Mega Malamar is probably not good, but it also cannot be instantly replaced without a second thought if you want to utilize its one niche for fun and is thus capable of being a funny replay generator. Mega Audio, meanwhile, is thoroughly outclassed at everything it tries to do.

Oh and Mega Audino sucks even in Doubles/VGC, the format it's designed for, while I can very much envision Mega Malamar being more than usable there compared to Singles. Intimidate is just that common and it's easier to compensate for its other flaws like middling Speed.

Do we have Heights and weights of all the New Megas?

Any other returning characters or cameos of those?

Also did anyone leak Agne design and confirm trainer data or at least who is the strongest trainer in the game?

Mega Audino honestly would be slighty better if it had Regenerator instead. Or even as a regular evolution, it literally has Togekiss' stat total and the improvement is comparable to that of Chansey to Blissey in raw stats:

Malamar does feel like it was designed to be mediocre in general, but, it has its fun niche.

Why Veekun stopped having those size comporable sprites with USUM?

Site hasn't really updated since USUM pretty much, and even Gen VII stuff is bugged. Shame, honestly the new set of menu sprites would work wonderfully with that format.

Then again, size is more complex than just sprite height, as seen in the ORAS Dex.

What makes you so sure Mega Malamar's retaining Contrary? Like, it's not out of the realm of possibility, but I don't see anything that makes it "extremely likely", a la Mega Starmie's 140 BST boost alluding to Huge/Pure Power.

I don't disagree that Mega Audino is dogshit, I know that. I was comparing Mega Audino to a non-Contrary / dogwater ability Mega Malamar, which would objectively be even shittier.

All the people saying that Mega Greninja is worse than Ash one... Do you realize that there is a difference between Megaevolving with one click and having to kill something for it, which not always will be possible?

In any case, Chesnaught is the best of the trio, enormous Defense and good Attack to cover what Body Press can't. Good Special bulk too.

Hopefully Victreebel gets Corrosion, otherwise no reason to use it over Venu.

Like Froslass, Falinks, Emboar, Meganium (best starter) and Skarmory, who was becoming very bad this generation and might be saved by the new niches the Mega opens.

it is either keeping Contrary or getting an insane new ability, it has the most subdued stat spread out of literally any mega new or old

there would next to no reason for them to spread out the 100 stats this way otherwise

I mean, vanilla Malamar is also weirdly Nidokingesque in its stat spread, and Mega Pyroar is literally +20 to everything (but seeing Pyroar already had 2 stats above 100 it kinda looks sorta workable for low tiers)

Being able to transform whenever is a nice benefit over Battle Bond (so is Nasty Plot if it keeps it for Champions), but you're using a Mega slot, and can't run another item besides the Mega Stone. Meanwhile, Ash-Gren was used alongside other Megas in USUM and held Choice Specs, and getting to Ash form wasn't that difficult when it could set up its own sweep early game with Spikes as it forced things out. Even if it couldn't transform, Specs Gren still hit decently hard, especially on Rain teams.

I getcha, but that could apply to any really good ability, not just Contrary. Idk, given the marketing for Mega Malamar, my guess for its ability would be related to hypnosis (hence my Yawn idea earlier lol) or confusion or something.

all the contrary mons except for the legendary have very odd stat spreads, also mons with gimmick abilities also tend to have very strange stat spreads, like if Mega Malamar's ability is it applies its signature move to the field on evolving (Topsy-Turvy) lol
