They know about the "every Mega is shaped like an X or Y" thing...
I mean obviously they’ve done it deliberately with a couple of the more recent Megas. Mega Absol Z’s horn is also very unambiguously in the shape of a Z.
The question that stands is, is this just a motif that Game Freak have coincidentally chosen to adopt recently as part of the newer design philosophy for some of the Z-A Megas, or was the theory Right All Along?
Personally,
my bugbear with the theory is that it’s basically unfalsifiable, which makes it basically useless as a “theory.” For any example where someone could object on the grounds that they don’t really see the alleged X or Y or Z shape/element in the design, all any proponent has to do is contort and contrive the criteria to make it work. “Okay sure they may not look like an X all the time, but
in this specific pose…”, which gives me painful flashbacks to the “the Alola Starters and Rockruff are shaped like alchemical symbols” thing.
Like, after Mega Lucario Z was revealed, Joe Merrick posted a picture of its stock art on twitter saying, “Okay but you have to admit it does look like a Z”… but the image was deliberately mirrored to create that resemblance. If you have to alter the image to make it work then it doesn’t really work, I feel.
Not to mention that the letters X, Y, and Z are all just 2/3 intersecting lines, which is an effortlessly easy sequence to “spot” in other shapes, especially when you’re making allowances for them to not have to be rigid straight lines.
And on top of all of that, you’ve also got the Pokémon fandom’s long and treasured history of “reading too much into shit.”
