oh well OF COURSE this had to drop 12 minutes ago just as I'm about to go to sleep, didn't it
Do I watch it now, or save it to watch at work tomorrow...? Decisions, decisions.
edit: okay so watching this, I have unrelated thoughts I feel like vomiting up:
- Never really liked Wally's team but it's kind of... really good isn't it? I mean obviously not by competitive standards but certainly by the standards of NPC opponents and for a real-life playthrough it's sparkling. Rivals/champions are usually the only NPCs to have a full party and while I don't much like Azumarill ORAS gives it to him and it feels fitting as a 6th team member, he should have had one of those too.
- The success/failure rate in this video really highlights the way that basically any party of three with sufficient diversity is pretty much enough for almost any scenario. Like this shouldn't really be news to most people who've played the games religiously but it kinda makes me think. NPCs so rarely have more than 3 Pokemon and the view is often that they're half-assing it but in a way it's us, the player, who is the aberration. In the Adventures manga it's mentioned that six is simply the hard limit imposed by the Pokemon Association because it's the most that can reasonably be given attention by one trainer at a time. But outside of a playthrough even that feels excessive. Think about how in the anime Ash had Pokemon like Pidgeotto who went multiple episodes without being seen. So it kind of makes me think that all the trainers who have 3 or 4 Pokemon are doing it right. Sure you can raise 6 if you're exceptional. But the thing about being exceptional is... by its very nature, most people are not.
What point am I getting at here? Idk, I guess just... if you've only got three Pokemon... that's absolutely fine. You're so fucking valid
- That said, seeing all the teams of two makes me think how fun it'd be to play through a game with a team of two (especially if, as in the Gardevoir/Slaking case, they have a really effective combo strategy in doubles). I have actually done this before, of course... just not with a dedicated duo who were designed for optimum efficiency in singles AND doubles. Emerald is kind of the prime game for this since it puts tag battles everywhere. ...yeah, I should definitely give that a shot some time.
