Little things you like about Pokémon

Idk in terms of BST sum the two teams are exactly equal, plus in Plat he gets a couple of TM moves, so at worst it seems like a lateral move.

Regarding how most of the Sinnoh VR trainers got their qualifications, maybe Volkner gave them pity badges after beating them so they wouldn't come back and bug him again...
Slightly veering off-topic, but I went to check Bulbapedia to compare Omar's teams and was reminded of how the site never seems to list the moves of route trainers. It's low-key annoying.

Just discovered that Golem of all Pokemon got a remodel in SV

Look at its rocks, they're the big tell. Better-looking face too

All the others I knew of were for popular early-days Pokemon (Kanto starters, Mewtwo, Persian & Johto mascots) so now I'm wondering if I missed any other oddball revamps like this

I can tell that Golem’s boulder looks a lot more like a rock than some rock-colored crystal or scale, if you xatch my draft.

The face, though, seems a lot more subtle, but I did see some stubs between the eyes and nose.

Okay so I've watched the Kanto one and damn it's funny how the stereotypical idea of a Cooltrainer/Ace Trainer is "a good spread of type diversity and mons with decent BST" and then so many of them in Kanto's Victory Road are just... garbage. Not watched the Johto one yet but from what I recall of the trainers on Route 26 and 27 there's some pretty dire teams there too.

This is actually very similar to an idea for a challenge run I had a while back... I should really get on that.

oh well OF COURSE this had to drop 12 minutes ago just as I'm about to go to sleep, didn't it

Do I watch it now, or save it to watch at work tomorrow...? Decisions, decisions.

edit: okay so watching this, I have unrelated thoughts I feel like vomiting up:

  • Never really liked Wally's team but it's kind of... really good isn't it? I mean obviously not by competitive standards but certainly by the standards of NPC opponents and for a real-life playthrough it's sparkling. Rivals/champions are usually the only NPCs to have a full party and while I don't much like Azumarill ORAS gives it to him and it feels fitting as a 6th team member, he should have had one of those too.

  • The success/failure rate in this video really highlights the way that basically any party of three with sufficient diversity is pretty much enough for almost any scenario. Like this shouldn't really be news to most people who've played the games religiously but it kinda makes me think. NPCs so rarely have more than 3 Pokemon and the view is often that they're half-assing it but in a way it's us, the player, who is the aberration. In the Adventures manga it's mentioned that six is simply the hard limit imposed by the Pokemon Association because it's the most that can reasonably be given attention by one trainer at a time. But outside of a playthrough even that feels excessive. Think about how in the anime Ash had Pokemon like Pidgeotto who went multiple episodes without being seen. So it kind of makes me think that all the trainers who have 3 or 4 Pokemon are doing it right. Sure you can raise 6 if you're exceptional. But the thing about being exceptional is... by its very nature, most people are not.

What point am I getting at here? Idk, I guess just... if you've only got three Pokemon... that's absolutely fine. You're so fucking valid

  • That said, seeing all the teams of two makes me think how fun it'd be to play through a game with a team of two (especially if, as in the Gardevoir/Slaking case, they have a really effective combo strategy in doubles). I have actually done this before, of course... just not with a dedicated duo who were designed for optimum efficiency in singles AND doubles. Emerald is kind of the prime game for this since it puts tag battles everywhere. ...yeah, I should definitely give that a shot some time.

I'm glad Vito was able to make it all the way to Wallace and win. I distinctly remember how in the anime episode covering the Winstrates he came back home dejected. A nice little redemption over 20 years in the making.

Since we're on the topic of fun videos about trainers of the game, I'll also recommend rylockes' videos on constantly grabbing the team of the last trainer fought

he's only done sinnoh & frlg, but it's really fun how puzzle-boxy it goes as he tries to maneuver bad teams into winning situations. Lots of micro-juggling and trying to avoid key trainers to beat later to upgrade worse off teams.

I also enjoy his "maximizing money" runs he's been doing.

Late reply but Flannery getting destroyed by a solo Roselia is genuinely embarrasing for her, or maybe I'm not familiar with its game since I have never used it on third gen.

I also didn't remember the entire Victory Road is literally only Cool Trainers and Wally, specially comparing it to Kanto.

Leech Seed+Status is a genuinely scary moveset in-game, and basically makes the grass-type useable entirely on it's own.

Fun fact, while the Grass-type starter from Gens 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 get Leech Seed, Bulbasaur(all powder moves) and Chikorita(Poison Powder only) are the only grass starters with status moves in their debut generations.

Not really a "thing" from the games themselves but I appreciate so much when people with the capability to do so take these zoomed-out images of locations, it's so interesting to me to see where the boundaries were set and how it all looks from a single angle. Bulbapedia has a lot of areas rendered like this, really scratches an itch somewhere deep in my brain to see them all.

I agree with you and think it's cool to see it, but I'm also like :psynervous: damn this looks so much worse than in-game

it looks like a lil toy model for a 2 year old from afar lol

the difference a bit of camera work can make it really impressive

I'm not sure if this fits in "things you like" or "dislike" but holy shit I never saw shiny Reshiram and Zekrom's highlights in Gen 5, they look siiiiiiick. Zekrom particularly, the green makes it look straight out of Ben 10!

I'm annoyed because GAMEFREAK decided to start shinylock legendaries by this generation, and of course when they were available, the 3D models barely show them (only during their signature moves, and veeeeery briefly) so few people know of these design choices...

Yeah but we could have had these instead though :(

I'm in the opposite boat re Resh&Zek's official shinies, the gold touches on shiny Reshiram are lovely and give it a nice little visual lift but Zekrom's shiny just looks like mood lighting to me. Like stick it under a fluorescent green overhead light and that's basically its shiny form, particularly with the way the Gen V animation style fades it in and out. It's not even one which the transition to 3D much improved, shiny Zekrom in later gens just has a very barely-noticeable greenish tinge. If it stayed the same colour overall but had permanent green accents in the same manner Reshiram does I think I'd like it more.

Gonna be honest I think these look pretty bad, Zekrom looks like an insect that just finished molting and Reshiram is giving 2007 Sonic OC vibes.

Their official shinies are definitely a case where they keep their almost straight black/white color schemes for a reason (that being their names). I think their 3D models not incorporating their power glows that their debut gen had in sprite forms is kind of odd, though.

That's precisely why I love them.

I can see the reasoning for keeping the black/white colour schemes but equally I'm quite fond of when paired Pokemon's shinies resemble each other - and with Resh/Zek in particular there's a certain thematic irony to having them swap colours, as they're nominally different but actually basically the same being. I do think their shiny forms look better in Gen V than later on, but ultimately they're both quite underwhelming.

You just gave me a blast of nostalgia holy shit.

A poster of the unova region was hanging in my room for years as a kid and I loved staring at it. Even though I knew in the games these areas weren't that complex, these maps make it look so lived in and massive. A region like this would be cool in any video game, but add pokemon to it and it's 10 times more marvelous.

Also shout-out the scarlet and violet map art. It was exciting seeing this for the first time, including the giant wormhole looking thing in the middle. In all its flaws I still believe it is a w entry in the series.

I shouldn't expect a lot from Nintendo, but if gen 10 is at all close to the elite graphics open-world we were promised in gen 9 then these maps can finally come to life.

10+ years on this is why Unova is, on balance, my favourite region; it really does feel lived-in in a way no other region really ever has

Asleep Pokémon can "hear" Perish Song.

At first I wondered if this was intended to be something that annoyed you but assuming it's not I can see the thinking here. After all, we do hear things in our sleep (or at least are aware of them), and of course there's evidence that people in comas can hear things around them. Of course, PS is more of a spell than a literal song so it stands to reason the normal rules of sound don't apply to it anyway.

Though something that continues to fascinate me is that Bounce (and presumably Fly and Dig too?) allows the user to avoid being affected by Perish Song in Gen V, which really makes very little sense. I guess if you're high up enough you can't hear it you're safe. Or possibly the spell has a fixed radius...

Fair, fair. I enjoy me some deliberately ugly shinies sometimes.

I think if they wanted to do something like this, it could be fun to just change one small part of Reshiram/Zekrom to be the opposite color (to reference the yin/yang symbol), though I think shinies like that were introduced in Gen 6. I also don't really know what part of the dragons I'd change for this suggestion.

Yeah but we could have had these instead though :(

Going from Pokemon to YGO with these shinies

yamper.gif

I think Yamper is a cleverly designed early-game catching aid. Aside from the obvious Ball Fetch it also comes with Nuzzle, perfect for whittling down catches while statusing them. It's relatively bulky, a distinct fixed encounter on the second route and is used by the professor-in-training. None of this is ever shoved in your face, it's all left for players to naturally pick up on. Yamper continues the trend of SWSH having weirdly good quality and seamless early game tutorializing

The new artworks for some of the Megas are crazy.

Still a bit disappointed they are promoting old Megas this much, but I can't deny those look insanely good.
I might in the minority on this opinion, but I don’t expect to see any new Megas in any future games and a part of me doesn’t actually want to see any new Megas either. A lot of people seem to forget this, but base Sun & Moon didn’t have every Mega at launch, and Let’s Go obviously only had the Kanto Megas. Playing devil’s advocate I do think it’s incredibly stupid that only one actual Kalos Pokémon gets to use the generational gimmick of its own generation (and even then, said Pokémon is a Mythical) but, going back to your point, this artwork looks super good and I think a lot of these are actually better than their “old” official artwork from Gen 6.

…no, but like seriously, only one Kalos Pokémon ever got a Mega? Really? I hate Sword & Shield almost as much as I love the Ranger games and even I can admit Galar at least had the forethought to give multiple Galar Pokémon G-Max variants. How bad do you have to screw something up for me to say Sword & Shield did better than you…?
