Little things you like about Pokémon

Cynthia already has multiple official card sleeves released, but the most recent one...

...is something else... :worrywhirl:

Dunno where else to post this, but the official Pokemon Twitter has been posting special artwork for each and every region leading up to Pokemon Day this year. A lot of it's pretty cute.

Really like that they showed off little artwork for each region for this year. Seems the events are:

Kanto: Picking a starter
Johto: Meeting the Red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage
Hoenn: Uncovering a Kecleon on Route 120 via the Devon Scope
Sinnoh: Running into ghosts at the Old Chateau
Unova (BW1): Musicals
Unova (BW2): Meeting your starter
Kalos: Riding a Rhyhorn on Route 9
Alola: Hiding from a storm on Exeggutor Island with Lillie
Galar: Dynamax showdown with Milo at Turffield Gym

Also worth pointing out the protagonist of choice in each region's art, which I find interesting:

Kanto: Red
Johto: Gold/Ethan
Hoenn: May
Sinnoh: Dawn
Unova (BW1): Hilbert
Unova (BW2): Rosa
Kalos: Serena
Alola: Elio
Galar: Gloria

So in summation, Kanto, Johto, BW1 Unova, and Alola opted for the boy protagonist, while Hoenn, Sinnoh, BW2 Unova, Kalos, and Galar opted for the girl protagonist. Given for the first two regions you really could only play as a boy so Red and Gold/Ethan are that iconic, meanwhile it seems May, Dawn, Rosa, Serena, and Gloria are more iconic for their respective regions. Hilbert and Elio seem to be a tad more favored over Hilda and Selene for BW1 Unova and Alola.

And their respective starters of choice

Red: Unknown (he's picking one in the art, he might be leaning towards Squirtle though)
Gold/Ethan: Totodile (evolved into Croconaw in this art), a bit odd since I associate him more with Cyndaquil
May: Treecko
Dawn: Piplup
Hilbert: Oshawott
Rosa: Tepig (also one I didn't expect since I associate her more with Snivy)
Serena: Fennekin
Elio: Rowlet
Gloria: Sobble

Anyway, really liked the artwork they showed off for each region this year for Pokemon Day, a lot of it is pretty great and cute and I really enjoyed seeing these for each day leading up to tomorrow (which is Pokemon Day). A nice way to celebrate each and every region that has existed in the Pokemon series thus far imo.

I suspect the Anime has a lot to do with that. Gloria was big with the fandom, because "Angry girl rants in Scots" was an excellent meme, but IIRC* the female protags were generally Ash's companion, while the male protags were either the rival or forgettable.

I'll also note that the scene for Alola is one that generally can get read as romantic by players no matter whether the protag is male or female, and GF has actively avoided any gay content, so obviously they're only going to make that image with a male protag.

*I'm not an anime fan and welcome correction from those who are

So the Legends Arceus free update added a bunch of new battles with familiar NPCs. A lot of them got new team picks representing their descendants, with the starkest of these being...

This is unabashedly hilarious. Game Freak's completely in on the joke and I love it
Well if they want to reference the descendants I think Zisu is the only one who can fully realize her descendent's team without getting hung up on a Pokemon that isn't in the hisui dex, being hamstrung to 3 pokemon, or needing to reference a different, more important Pokemon (ie: Arezu cant use Golbat because she needs to use her noble pokemon)

So may as well use the DP team since all the pieces are already there

Melli really looks like Jupiter's ancestor by having a team that pairs well with Arezu. Both gain a pokemon used by Mars and Jupiter (Bronzong and Golbat), both use their descendant's ace, and Drapion's Poison/Dark combo foils Lilligant's Grass/Fighting.
Nah believe me they're not that subtle. If he was a Jupiter ancestor Melli would literally just have her hairdo and use Bronzong over Drapion

I mean having 2/3rds of a reference is still pretty solid. Beni grabs some randos (Sneasler, Mismagius) in addition to Wally's stuff across the various battles. Arezu uses Lilligant instead of Golbat (and not everyone grabs their respective noble). Galeric opts not to use Abomasnow, instead grabbing the Glalie line.

Also no one in the Tenacity teams overlap on Pokemon, which seems relevant. I don't think Meli would have Bronzong for the same reason Arezu doesn't have Golbat

yeah it's weird for Melli to not have more overt relations but man it's real hard to look at his Skuntank & Golbat and not go "but okay are we sure tho"

So Legends has some Hidden Lore, in the form of Old Verses which are hidden about the world gotta find with Ursaluna. That's fun in its own right, of course, the *ahem* Mysterious Unknown Writer writes about all kinds of things mostly pertaining to the history of the celestica people, the legends of Sinnoh, purposes in life, thoughts on the environment, etc. All very, ah "beautiful" and serious writings.

And then there's the one where she just talks about Potato Mochi
"Sootfoot, humble root—harvest it, and peel it.
Broiled, banked, or steamed will do,
just let nobody steal it.
Mash the root, then knead the mash,
then once more heat it over—
Grill it only till it browns—
use Ember, not Flamethrower.
Now harken well, and listen closely:
the wise adore potato mochi.
A day spent eating all in reach,
is no day wasted, if you ask me."

*chef kiss*

The one about Enamorus is also funny
"Once there was a god of field,
and once there was a god of spring.
Upon Hisui's winds it wheeled,
brough life to every growing thing.
'Where go you when you are not here?'
asked I one day the god of spring.
No answer would it give me clear,
but still did I have an inkling.
There is no great dark truth untold—
it simply does not like the cold."

Speaking of which, I realised a few days ago that they kept the "Indian elephant" mention in FireRed because the only elephant Pokémon at the time were Ground-types.

Actually it was because Fire Red used the exact same dex entries as the Japanese Red and Green(while Leaf Green used the ones from the Japanese Blue, which were re-used in our Red and Blue), not a single line was changed whatsoever. You're looking too hard into it, because remakes usually copy/paste dex entries.

Yeah, the only reason Legends changed it is because there is now an actual indian elephant Pokémon in the games.
