It's time for another staff interview! We're starting to get closer toward the end of our interviews - this time, let's talk with the staff member who's been a literal country before -
Adeleine (formerly known as many things, including
Finland)
Hey there! How would you introduce yourself?
I've been almost everywhere and done almost everything on PS – I hit my 10 year anniversary last year. I'm a university student who wants to understand herself and the world and has a penchant for unusual perspectives. I like video games (locally competitive Smash Bros. player), music, and critical analysis.
Oh! (Late) Congrats on your 10 year anniversary! I guess it's not just Lobbys anniversary, huh? Anyways, as I mentioned in the introduction, you went formerly by Finland - sorry for stealing your inevitable thunder, but how about the history of your username?
Oh goodness. I've had 5 main usernames here.
In 2013, I started with rp2865. This originated in the trivia site Sporcle of all places, where I was randomperson2864. If you care about that sort of thing, my quizzes have about 30K total plays, and I got a Curator's Choice and Editor's Choice.
However, that felt a bit impersonal. I soon moved to TheTiksiBranch. It's a reference to Generation 1 Pokemon, which mentions Silph Co. having a branch in Tiksi, the real-life Russian city, of all places. I loved Pokemon and geography, so it was a natural fit. As I got more established, I shortened the name to Tiksi.
After several years, though, the funny little reference wore off. I changed to Finland. You know, the country. My geography nerd tendencies come front and center with one of my favorite countries. I visited Helsinki one summer as well, and it was wonderful. This also corresponds to my username on another site, the MUTHEAD Madden forums, where I went by Finland Revenge. That was my second most important online community besides Pokemon Showdown. Among other things, I used the in-game currency to run an investment fund.
After enough years, I was ready to move again. Geography was not my core interest anymore, and there were a couple of minor disadvantages with the name. On one end, people did enjoy referencing that one Spongebob scene, and it was funny to me at first but eventually got a bit stale. On the diametrically opposite end, a decent number of people who actually live in Finland made reasonable predictions that I lived in Finland and/or spoke Finnish, and I was in an awkward position of "I kind of accidentally represent your country but do not speak your language or live there, sorry." They were always gracious, and my intention with the name was sincere appreciation, but it was a weird position I had inadvertently put myself in.
At last, then, I chose Adeleine. Completely shifting gears, I now represented one of my favorite games, Kirby 64, and one of my favorite characters from it. (My avatar also has the fairy queen from Kirby 64.) The game and character are important to me for their good-hearted, good-willed, sincere happiness, creativity, and belief, among other things. It's an ideal I strive to emulate with my own liberties.
(My secret sixth username is Ado, my Smash tag and thus the nickname some use for me. I don't use or possess the account on PS, though.)
Holy shit, you were Tiksi?! I had no idea, I'm such a big fan! Tell me, how did you find out about Pokemon Showdown, especially given how ancient of a PS user you are?
I found out from googling Pokemon's names and stumbling into the Smogon analyses. I thought I might like to try teambuilding and found the place where they did that.
Oh wow, luck by google search! What's your favourite part about PS, would it be something related to Smogon Analyses?
I've found a lot to like and dislike over the years. My favorite part is the friends and sincere connections I've made along the way. Besides some banned individuals, anyway.
Speaking of a lot to like and dislike, something I really like is learning about ones PS journey. So, what's your story? And, is Lobby your first/main room?
Strap in.
My PS journey maps reasonably well onto my username history. As rp2865, I was a pretty quiet regular in the Trivia room. I did some amateur teambuilding and was a not-good Pokemon player. As TheTiksiBranch, I rose through the ranks of Trivia staff and became Room Owner. I wrote many questions for official competitions in the Question Workshop and explored other gaming rooms like Game Corner, Mafia, and Wi-Fi, becoming room voice in each, as well as Scholastic. I tried starting up a Web Games room, but that didn't really take.
As Tiksi, I really hit the PS floor. I branched out more deeply other rooms like Lobby, Help, Pokemon Games (Sun & Moon), and Smash Bros. Eventually, I became mod in the first, Room Owner in the last two, and de facto Room Owner in Help–the position didn't exist yet. I became global moderator, fiercely active in global policy, discipline appeals, and user support. I helped develop sets for Random Battles – alongside the current generations at the time, I was the one who said "We should have Generation 3 and 4 Random Battles too" and did most of the non-technical work to initialize those. I was a capable Anything Goes player, moderating that room. Unfortunately, I fell out with Upper Staff and resigned, leaving the site for a while.
As Finland, I came back and set up shop much the same way as before. Room policy, global policy, user support, you get the idea. I continued work on Random Battles, moderating that room, and coordinated set creation for most of Generation 8 Battle Factory. To be clear, I was not making the sets this time – these represented specific Smogon tiers I was unfamiliar with. However, after enough years, I eventually burned out on routine global moderator work like discipline appeals, focusing more on broad site policy and my staffing rooms. After another falling out with Upper Staff, I resigned again. I would come back, but I was done with global staff for good.
As Adeleine, I've settled into my groove as a veteran user with targeted interests. I spend the most time in the Smash Bros. room, practicing, playing for fun, and chatting with users new and old. I've also returned to Lobby and joined Video Games, which I now mod, chatting and chiming in on policy. It's a more low-key presence, but one that matches my changing relationship with the site and increasing outside obligations, and it's a presence I'm happy with as it is.
That sounds like a
lot, and I feel like this interview doesn't do your journey justice, haha! Sounds like you have a lot of things to be proud of - what's your biggest thing you're proud of?
Inside PS, I helped conduct several beneficial room transitions and helped a couple wonderful people be happier and more comfortable on the site. Outside of PS, I've learned to love myself as a person.
Aye, I love to hear that! You mentioned smogon analyses earlier, would you happen to play competitively?
I used to play AG competitively from XY into USUM. I made high ladder, did two RMTs, and joined a tournament, where I was the only person to take a game off of tour winner Chloe. We matched in the first round, though, so I didn't win any sets. I occasionally dipped my toes into other formats, like Balanced Hackmons and Generation 1 OU.
Nowadays, I'm an alright casual Generation 3 and Generation 4 Random Battles player.
Love Gen 3/4 formats! I apologize for cutting our time short, but my pizza delivery has just arrived so I'm going to go have dinner. Anything you want to add before we end it off?
It's been a trip down memory lane writing this. Rooting for y'all.
And that concludes this wonderful interview! Join us next time for another ancient user... It'll be quite the interview!
