Really??? I took it the move relearner at level 42 to get super power. i guess that wouldnt be the first time a pokemon learned a move at level one and a later level

Yeah, if I recall, all the of the three initials learn their signature move again at level 76.

Just thought I'd post the set I've been using in Battle Spot;

Malamar @ Assault Vest/Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
Nature: Sassy
EVs: 252 HP, 128 Atk, 128 Def
- Rock Slide/Hypnosis
- Superpower
- Night Slash
- Psycho Cut

It works really well. Sassy plus Assault Vest gives her Sp Bulk nearly equivalent to her Def investment, combine this with max HP investment and she can tank a few hits on both sides. (NOTE: I said a FEW) Hypnosis is for a predicted switch, Psycho Cut and Night Slash give good STAB coverage, and Superpower rounds it off giving her nearly perfect coverage. After +2 Malamar becomes a decent bulky attacker, and after +4 your opponent will be hard pressed to get rid of her without a STAB bug attack. And yes, I've achieved +6 multiple times by spamming Superpower. At this point your opponent might as well give up. So I think a lot of people are underestimating Malamar. With the right support, perhaps a mon that can Baton Pass some speed boosts, Malamar could potentially be a viable OU candidate.

You can't use Hypnosis if you're using the Assault Vest. You can only use damaging move with that item. You'd be better off replacing it with Rock Slide or something for coverage.

Although I think that Assault Vest would be an interesting use, it is impossible to use Hypnosis while holding the Assault Vest. Furthermore the loss of Leftovers coupled with hazards and weather drastically reduce Malamar's survivability. Finally the Sassy nature and the EVs attempt to do to much and in the end accomplish very little.

That's true. I've honestly never had to use my Malamar's Hypnosis, so I had forgotten about that. Rock Slide would allow him to hit bugs for SE damage, so that sounds like a good option.

Just try it, and I guarantee you won't be saying that afterwards :)
From a major competitive stand point, it might not work as well. But as far as the Battle Spot goes, it's working really well so far.

Well considering this is a competitive battling site, it is crucial to evaluate sites based upon their competitive value. The more calcs I run the more I am disappointed in both Malamar's bulk and offense. I didn't realize how prevalent bug moves were in the lower tiers until I thought about it, namely U-turn. Even at +6 almost impossible to achieve u-turn does tremendous damage neutering Malamar.

Then perhaps max def investment with a relaxed nature? btw my set is intended for Trick Room teams. I forgot to mention that.

I think as we continue to research Malamar, we will continue to find moves it can use to abuse contrary. It's stas are so low, GF has to have given it something more than Superpower to make up for it... Here's hoping that he can in fact learn Hammer Arm :)

Malamar already outspeeds Aegislash doesn't it?

Yes, but 3x Sword Dance + Shadow Sneak Aegislash is probably going to be one of the more popular builds. It's absolutely destroying people on Battle Spot right now, and it works because Aegislash has 150/150 base in both Defenses until he attacks. Since Shadow Sneak has priority, the only things that can beat this Aegislash are Normal types and Priority users with higher Speed.

Which is why Malamar should get Sucker Punch. =3

Oh good to know that i'll prepare better before going online then.

So did the baby Inkay got sucker punch? That would be a blessing for our squid!

I use Payback to take advantage of Malamar's subpar Speed stat. It ends up becoming MUCH better than Night Slash with the boost, bringing it to 100 Base Power + STAB if you attack after the opponent.

Can Inkay even breed with anything that gets Sucker Punch? All the would be partners I know of get it from 4th Gen Tutors, so we can't really know until we get our old Pokemon.

Quickly scanning, I only see Lanturn, Corsola, and Huntail. You're right.
