Melmetal is a very prevalent wall in the Balanced Hackmons metagame thanks to it solid defensive stats and good defensive typing in Steel, allowing it to check various physical attackers. With Fur Coat, Melmetal can check Zacian-C and acts as a blanket check to most of physical attackers in Balanced Hackmons, including non-Intrepid Sword Zekrom, and Zeraora. Alternatively, Flash Fire or Primordial Sea give Melmetal an immunity to common Fire-type coverage moves such as V-create. Flash Fire isn't immediately revealed, while Primordial Sea isn't ignored by Mold Breaker users like Galarian Darmanitan-Z. These ability abilities allows Melmetal to switch into the aforementioned Pokemon without fearing V-create, as well as checking Galarian Darmanitan-Z. Spectral Thief steals Intrepid Sword's boosts and prevents Melmetal from being setup fodder for Pokemon such as Zekrom. Anchor Shot allows to beat and remove opposing Imposter users like Wobbuffet due to Imposter's PP mechanics. It provides a decent offensive presence, thanks to its good Attack and STAB. With its low Speed, U-turn allows Melmetal to act as a slow pivot for its teammates, helping them to come in on the field safely. Similary, Teleport can be used against even slower Pokémon like Snorlax and others Teleport users as well avoid Rocky Helmet chip, but it has the downside of being affected by Taunt. Will-O-Wisp can cripple non-Poison Heal physical attackers like Zacian-C, while Entrainment lets Melmetal disturb ability-reliant Pokemon, especially those with Poison Heal. This, in combination with Anchor Shot trapping, forces Poison Heal users to switch out. Knock Off allows Melmetal to remove some useful items such as Ferrothorn's Leftovers, while Defog supports the team, especially the Pokemon that are very weak to Stealth Rock, like Galarian Darmanitan-Z. Rocky Helmet is the main item of choice to punish the use of lots of moves, including U-turn, Bolt Beak, and Fishious Rend, although Leftovers and Safety Goggles can be used to respectively have a passive recovery and prevent Sleep users from taking advantage of Melmetal.
Since Melmetal is overwhelmed by strong special attackers such as Reshiram, Kyurem-W and Lunala, Pokemon able to check them like Ice Scales Type: Null and Umbreon are great teammates. If Melmetal has Fur Coat, it appreciates teammates that are able to switch in on Fire-type moves such as V-create, like Seismitoad and Reshiram. Teammates such as Eternatus and Golisopod can switch into Fighting-types like Poison Heal Zamazenta that force out Melmetal. On the other hand, offensive partners like Kyurem-B and Galarian Darmanitan-Z like Melmetal being able to switch in against opposing Imposter users, and they can also pressure defensive Pokemon like Mandibuzz that Melmetal struggle against. Melmetal can also provide slow pivot support for them with Teleport or U-turn.

With Prankster, Melmetal is able to shut down opposing setup sweepers such as Zekrom with priority Haze. Moreover, Haze removes the boost of Intrepid Sword users like Barraskewda and Zekrom, allowing Melmetal to beat them in one-a-one situation. The priority given to status move thanks to Prankster also reduces the power of both Bolt Beak and Fishious Rend, making their users like Zeraora less dangerous and allowing Melmetal to easily beat them with Rocky Helmet damage. Anchor Shot allows to beat and remove opposing Imposter users like Wobbuffet due to Imposter's PP mechanics, and still provide a decent offensive presence. Encore makes the opposing foes easier to handle, locking them in setup moves like Quiver Dance or weaker moves like Sunsteel Strike. With the trapping effect of Anchor Shot, Melmetal can remove a foe or PP stall it. However, Encore can be bypassed by Dynamax, so Melmetal has to be careful around this. Entrainment, in combination with Anchor Shot trapping, force Poison Heal users to switch out, while Strength Sap can be considered over these moves in order to fully heal against physical attackers such as Zeraora with a priority. Court Change is also a viable option, allowing Melmetal to inverse the entry hazard war. Rocky Helmet is the main item of choice, punishing weaker moves like U-turn, although that Leftovers and Safety Goggles can be used to respectively have a passive recovery and avoid being put to sleep by Pokemon like Zekrom.
Pokemon able to switch in on Fire moves such as Seismitoad, Eternatus, and Reshiram make great teammates. Pokemon such as Ice Scales Type: Null, Zamazenta-C, and Umbreon can provide a check to various special attackers such as Reshiram, Lunala, and Kyurem-W, which threaten Melmetal. All of these defensive Pokemon appreciates Melmetal acting as a check to most physical setup sweepers. Finally, wallbreakers such as Lunala, Zamazenta, and Zacian-C can break through opposing defensive Pokemon and appreciate Melmetal providing a security against setup sweepers. Pokemon such as Poison Heal Zekrom and Kyurem-B also appreciates that Melmetal can Improof them and provide the same support against setup sweepers.
