Project Metagame Workshop

About the final point, status moves in this OM would be completely inverted, e.g. Calm Mind would raise the opponent's Special Attack and Special Defence rather than yours (in a doubles setting, the player can choose the target).
This is not the stated premise; the premise as stated specifically refers to secondary effects. If you don't mean specifically secondary effects, then update your post to say what you actually mean.

A friend of mine dropped this idea on Discord and I've been thinking about it ever since. I don't have any plans to lead a metagame myself but if someone likes this concept and is willing to take the helm go on ahead.

Terastallization no longer changes your typing: instead, you put in the name of a Pokemon, and when you Tera, you will transform into that Pokemon. Your moveset and Ability will carry over to the transformation, but your typing and base stats will match that of the Pokemon you transformed into.

There's a couple Tera-related and transformation OMs out there but after looking through the index, I think this does enough to distinct itself. Fervent Impersonation is the closest one, but it requires your moveset to be shared with the Pokemon you would transform into, and only happens if said Pokemon drops to 50% health or less. This mechanic would allow you to transform a Pokemon into another one whenever, whilst retaining whatever moveset you had along with your Ability.

What I like about this mechanic is how certain Pokemon that would seem extremely strong to pull out of nowhere become far more awkward to use in practice. Ursaluna for example has an insane statline and is known to be a nuclear warhead of a breaker, but much of that power comes from Guts, and unless you start with a Pokemon that also has Guts, you miss out on that immediate damage bonus. Other Pokemon like Gliscor can definitely abuse the hell out of transforming into a brand new typing and statline exceptionally well, but aren't exactly poised to be a good transformation on their own.

I don't think this needs to lift the "one Tera user per game" limit currently in place for players, as the goal is taking the type-changing aspect of Tera to its extreme, which is becoming a completely new Pokemon entirely. You'd just be playing a fairly normal game of SV but with an ethereal "7th Pokemon" on your team you can whip out at any moment, and what that Pokemon is depends on who you use Tera on.

The reason I said that your moves and Ability carry over is simply because it's the simplest way to have this work: you can't "pre-bake" a moveset onto a Pokemon you don't have on your teambuilder I could be wrong about this, but, while you could technically carry over Ability choice from one to the other based on how they are programmed on cart, I don't think Showdown has Abilities implemented this way, so it's easier to just keep your original. (What I mean here is that a Pokemon like Moltres-Galar which only has Berserk as an Ability choice actually has three Abilities like many other Pokemon, it's just that all three Abilities are Berserk. I'm not sure Showdown has a way of distinguishing between "regular Ability Berserk" and "Hidden Ability Berserk.")

Some stuff that would need addressed:
  1. How does HP work? I know we have Zygarde, but its important to consider that Zygarde can only gain Base HP from Power Construct, not lose it. If you transform into a Pokemon with less base HP, what happens? Can this cause you to faint? *edit: This could also just work like Transform and Base HP is completely ignored.
  2. If you share a type/both types with the Pokemon you transform into, do you still get the damage boost from Tera? Or should we consider this transformation as entirely different from how Tera works? (I.e. this mechanic is less "terastallizing" and more "achieve an effect using the tera button already implemented") **edit: also, do you retain your old STABs? Intuition tells me this is a bad idea if you do.
  3. Would a Tera Preview clause be necessary?
  4. Is this limited to one Tera per team? Or can every Pokemon on your team use Tera in the same round? I mentioned this already but it's worth repeating.
  5. Can a Pokemon transform into itself? If so, what happens?
  6. What about weird edgecases, like held item transformations? If a Pokemon that isn't Ogerpon holds a Wellspring Mask, does transforming into Ogerpon give you Ogerpon-Wellspring? Additionally, would Ogerpon-Wellspring be base form, or the unique Tera form? I guess this also includes something like having a male/female/genderless Pokemon transform into something that can't be that specific gender type, even if this is irrelevant for 99% of battles.
  7. *edit: I completely forgot about Tera Blast LMFAO this needs to be worked out as well. Does it use the Primary type? Does it do anything? Should we just ban it instantly?
  8. *edit: By all accounts carrying over Ability isn't a requirement, but you would need a system to work out which Ability gets chosen for all possibles cases.

(Art made with Paint)

SLUMBERFEST

Premise :

All pokemon are forced to sleep.

Rules :

This metagame is played in a SV Single format, 3 vs 3. Both sides' Pokémon come on the field while asleep. They keep this statut active, unless they have a move, item or ability* that would awake them : in that case, they revert to sleep at the end of the turn (like an act of sleepwalking) once the effect of awakening stop (so the turn when a berry has been consumed, or when a move/ability's effect end).

Clauses :

  • Baton Pass Clause : only one Baton Pass user per teams allowed ;
  • Evasion Clause : items, moves and abilities that might increase evasion or reduce accuracy are banned ;
  • Species Clause : only one Pokémon of their species allowed per teams.

Bans :

Insomnia
Moody
Poison Heal
Prankster
Pressure
Purifying Salt
Unaware
Vital Spirit
Terrain Extender
Damp Rock
Heat Rock
Ice Rock
Light Clay
Smooth Rock
Shed Tail
Darkrai
Komala

Watchlist :

Contrary
Imposter
Magic Bounce
Regenerator
Ability Shield
Covert Cloak
Gholdengo
Mew

Increased Viability :

Most of Priority moves (if not every of them) are inefficient in this metagame, since the priority bracket isn't taken account of anymore. Therefore, this favors strategies around Choice items, since Sleep Talk allows to vary attacks while Atk, SpA or Spe are increased.

Gholdengo's ability Good as Gold allow them to being immune to Whirlwind, Roar, Trick, Taunt or Torment, which are more likely to be used in battle in this metagame, as they control the pace of actions. They can be played either offensively (Choice-Attacker or Bulky-Setup-Sweeper), versatile, or as support (Screener) based on what is needed in their team. One could also equip them with Covert Cloak, so that they prevent Spikes and Stealth Rocks to be forcefully put, respectively with Ceaseless Edge or Stone Axe.

Gholdengo @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Good as Gold
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
Tera Type: Fairy or Water
- Sleep Talk
- Hex
- Recover / Reflect
- Make It Rain / Light Screen

Gholdengo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Good as Gold
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Tera Type: Fairy
- Sleep Talk
- Nasty Plot
- Hex
- Make It Rain / Dazzling Gleam
Mew already have access to a lot of moves, and their Imprison + Transform combo can outplay most of the available Pokémon. This specific set calls fast Scarf-Taunt or Scarf-Trick counters out, which must have only Sleep Talk + one move to make it work, at the risk of being predictable. Coupled with Mental Herb, they can use Taunt to prevent another attempt of preventing Transform.

Mew @ Mental Herb
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Tera Type: Fairy
- Sleep Talk
- Taunt
- Imprison
- Transform
Ursaluna-Bloodmoon are the most suitable users of Snore, their high SpA and ability reducing easy checks on them. Their base Def and HP make them resilient enough to withstand physical attacks, even evading OHKOs by Fighting-Type Band-Attackers with high investment in Def. Snore also make them able to hit Taunt users, being a good weapon against anti-setup.

Ursaluna-Bloodmoon @ Leftovers
Ability: Mind's Eye
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
Tera Type: Normal or Ghost
- Snore
- Sleep Talk
- Calm Mind
- Earth Power
Electrode-Hisui are the fastest users of Worry Seed, allowing them to prevent their opponents from spamming Sleep Talk. Their ability also make them immune to sound moves, which protect them from Psychic Noise and so guarantee HP recovery.

Electrode-Hisui @ Rocky Helmet (or Choice Scarf)
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Tera Type: Flying, Fairy
- Sleep Talk
- Worry Seed
- Leech Seed/Giga Drain
- Volt Switch (optional)
- Special Offense :

Gardevoir get a more impactful presence in offense, notably thanks to their Trace ability and good coverage. Tracing Landorus-Therian's Intimidate, Zamazenta's Dauntless Shield or Toxapex's Regenerator highlight their revenge-kill possibilities. After tracing Insomnia on switchin (if Worry Seed has been previously used), they can get rid of the randomness of Sleep Talk and players can choose the move they want.

Gardevoir @ Choice Specs/Choice Scarf
Ability: Trace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
Tera Type: Fairy or Fighting
- Sleep Talk
- Moonblast
- Psychic Noise or Shadow Ball
- Aura Sphere

- Physical Offense :

Kingambit stay a good asset to a team, whether as wallbreaker or revenge sweepers. Their Defiant ability compensate any stat drops made by their opponents, allowing them to punish Intimidate, Tickle, Memento or Parting Shot users.

Kingambit @ Choice Band
Ability: Supreme Overlord or Defiant
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
Tera Type: Dark or Ghost
- Sleep Talk
- Kowtow Cleave
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance (optional)
Golurk might suprise a lot of players, having the possibility to simply prevent an opponent from using moves. Their Klutz ability allow them to trick Assault Vest without being impacted by the received item. This would call for Sticky Hold or Orbs counters (Palkia, Dialga, Giratina, Ogerpon...) which are easy to predict, being only a few.

Golurk @ Assault Vest
Ability: Klutz
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
Tera Type: Fighting or Ghost
- Sleep Talk
- Trick
- Drain Punch
- Poltergeist/Earthquake

Questions & Answers :

*Q1 : How would Early Bird work in this metagame ?

-> It would randomly wakes the user up, as sleep turns aren't defined. The latter would go back to sleep at the end of the same turn it awakened.

Q2 : Does Natural Cure ends sleep definitely ?

-> No, Pokémon possessing Natural Cure are cured upon switching out but revert to sleep once coming back on the field. Note : if a Pokémon wakes their foe up with Worry Seed, the latter stays awaken until they switch out because they gain the ability Insomnia, which is not the case for Wake-Up Slap or Uproar since they go back to sleep once the effect end.

Question for the community :

Is this metagame interesting ? Would it be more fun as a Doubles format (4 vs 4 or less) ? Should I add more bans and/or give more details in the Q&A ?

Metamorph Mons
Metagame premise.
After naming a Pokémon, your Pokémon is transformed by averaging its stats with the stats of the Pokémon it was named after. It also inherits the named Pokémon’s moves and gains a secondary type from the Named Pokémon’s Type.

Potential bans and threats: This metagame has already been tested on a separate Pokémon Showdown instance with friends. During testing, several elements were banned due to their strength, including Huge Power, Rage Fist, and Stored Power.

There is also a Restricted List containing Pokémon such as Alolan Persian and Comfey. Pokémon on this list cannot fuse with another Pokémon and cannot be used as the Pokémon being fused into.

As for potential threats, the strongest combination we encountered that remains legal is Zamazenta + Hoopa-Unbound. However, the metagame has a relatively high overall defensive power level, which helps keep even extremely powerful combinations in check. As a result, Zamazenta + Hoopa-Unbound does not appear to be overwhelmingly broken despite its offensive potential.

Standard OMs
!Nickname Clause
!Obtainable Abilities
Ability Clause = 1
Sleep Moves Clause
Metamorph Mons (The Custom Clause for this Metagame)
Terastal Clause

Bans:
Uber
AG
Arena Trap
Moody
Shadow Tag
Contrary
Huge Power
Pure Power
Unburden
King's Rock
Quick Claw
Razor Fang
Light Ball
Last Respects
Shed Tail
Expanding Force
Rage Fist
Stored Power
Baton Pass

Unbans:
Annihilape
Espathra
Ogerpon-Hearthflame
Solgaleo
Terapagos
Urshifu-Rapidstrike
Volcarona

The metagame also has a Restricted List for certain Moves, Abilities, and Pokémon. Anything on this list cannot be inherited through fusion and is limited to its original user.

For example, Eruption is restricted, so it can only be used by Pokémon that naturally learn it. You can still use a Pokémon with Eruption as your base Pokémon, but other Pokémon cannot gain Eruption through fusion. The same rule applies to restricted abilities.

For restricted Pokémon, such as Mew, the restriction applies to the Pokémon itself. Mew remains legal to use, but it cannot fuse with another Pokémon or be used as the fusion donor.

Restricted:
Magnet Pull
Serene Grace
Speed Boost
Magic Bounce
Eruption
Revival Blessing
Shell Smash
Shift Gear
Belly Drum
Dragon Dance
Power Trip
Mew
Smeargle
Ditto
Porygon-Z
Slaking
Comfey
Frosmoth
Lilligant-Hisui
Persian-Alola
Manaphy
Maushold
Komala

Most Pokémon in Restricted are because they are the only broken passer of a move. or are broken because of how the format works.

Questions & Answers

1. How are the Types Applied?

The typing is determined using the following priority:

  • The Pokémon first attempts to inherit the named Pokémon’s secondary type.
  • If the named Pokémon does not have a secondary type, or if it matches the base Pokémon’s primary type, it instead attempts to use the named Pokémon’s primary type.
  • If that is also invalid, the Pokémon keeps its original secondary type, provided it does not duplicate its primary type.
  • If no valid secondary type is available, the Pokémon remains mono-typed.

2. How Would Certain Pokémon Look With Stat Fusion?

Stats are averaged between the base Pokémon and the named Pokémon, giving the resulting Pokémon a middle ground between the two.

Here are four examples showing how different Pokémon would look after being fused:

Terapagos + Pecharunt:

I changed gigantamax Pikachu and Eevee to megas to their partner forms (which I buffed to 1 point lower than their fully evolved form) to work like eternal floette, but I could not do the same with Duraludon and Meowth.

Potential bans and threats: The mega Urshifu rapid strike “stone” gives water bubble which is the only ability I found fitting that is not already used water bubble works both for physical and special attack this like huge/pure power, the mega Tapu Lyle “stone” gives 60 special attack and beads of ruin which even for a base 40 special attack the “stone” can make a good special attacker, the mega Eevee z ”stone” gives simple which banned bidoof from OU that one time.

Questions for the community: What would be a better name for this meta and do my name subjections express the premise well enough? What did I miss that would be a potential threat/ban? How can I make the megas objectively?

  1. Mega Potential for example. The premise is supposed to give further information about what it is, so don't make it as long as a Haïku ;
  2. I can't really tell, but I guess I would ban legendaries (Necrozma, Solgaleo, Lunala, Marshadow). Those were already banned first in the Gen 7 OU then in the next ones.
  3. I can tell however that you spent a lot of times reflecting on the Pokémon that "have to get a new mega-evolution", which is impressive, even if the details in your post seem like a draft (in a sense it's readable but not comfortable to the eyes). The problem is that you're trying to turn the Dynamax Band and the Z-crystals, items that enhance moves' base power, into megastones. I would just make them last so that they behave like megastones (so making Z and Gigantamax mechanics last as long as the Pokémon involved are kicking). On that note, I would write a Mega Clause, stating that players can use one of the three mechanics only once per games.

Please put a "like" if you enjoyed the art, I can use photoshop but I'm not an artist and I'm not good at it. :)

SLUMBERFEST

Clauses :

  • Baton Pass Clause : only one Baton Pass user per teams allowed ;
  • Evasion Clause : items, moves and abilities that might increase evasion or reduce accuracy are banned.

Bans :

Insomnia
Moody
Prankster
Pressure
Purifying Salt
Unaware
Vital Spirit
Terrain Extender
Damp Rock
Heat Rock
Ice Rock
Smooth Rock
Shed Tail
Darkrai
Komala

Watchlist :

Imposter
Magic Bounce
Regenerator
Ability Shield
Covert Cloak
Gholdengo
Mew

Increased Viability :

Mew already have access to a lot of moves, and their Imprison + Transform combo can outplay most of the available Pokémon. This specific set calls fast Taunt or Scarf-Trick counters out, which must have only Sleep Talk + one move to make it work, at the risk of being predictable. Coupled with Mental Herb, they can use Taunt to prevent another attempt of preventing Transform.

Should I add more bans and/or give more details in the Q&A ?

im trying to understand what this meta is going to strategize around, it is just people clicking sleep talk all the time? cus i think that alone is a bit random and not great, but im guessing you have more ideas for strategies here. maybe a list of threats with their moveset and explanation would help

Your Gmax-to-Mega forms seem rather arbitrary to me in terms of stat boosts applied - for example, I can make Mega Urshifu not drop its Speed (unlike your spread) and still seem justified.

This is a good portion of the reason why I strongly believe your idea is a Pet Mod instead of an OM, and that you should be trying to pitch it there instead and see if anyone has already got there first.

Thanks !

You guessed it, there is not a lot of options apart from using Sleep Talk or Snore. I added examples of sets that might be seen in the Increased Viability section. I'm still looking for other "viable" sets, I didn't speak about either Weather-based teams strategies or Hazard control yet. I even profited from the occasion to add a clause I forgot.

The premise sounds really cool, if youd be willing to have me on your council id be happy to do some theory testing with pokemon that would need to be banned or restricted, i also think youd need to restrict quite a few things, for instance slaking and regigigas wouldnt be a problem unless they had like adaptability instead of their normal ability

Edit: misread your thing ill steal the metagame for you then muehehehe

So reverse one per battle inheritance? Could work if you brand it as such
