Metalheads United ;D

I'm not really a metalhead in the purest sense of the word (playing the music to a volume that annoys the neighbors, dressing the part, etc.), but I sure find myself listening to more and more these days. At the moment, I am a mainstream metal wuss, but I really like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth (not as much as the others), and am getting really addicted to Mastodon.

Folk-metal, anyone?

Anyone else out there listen to folk-metal? It's been my favorite genre of music for a while now since it was introduced to me by some friends, but I find that not many people seem to know of its existence. Bands like Elvenking and Eluvietie. Anyone else listen to them? I saw some mention of Wolfchant earlier in the thread, who are a bit folk in nature considering the Pagan lyrics, so I'm sure at least some of you have.

Folk metal is good in theory and on paper, but i've yet to hear a band execute it without sounding horribly cheesy. =/

Yeah, I'll agree and admit I've heard some cheesy folk-metal out there. But Eluveitie is excellent in my opinion. The song "Inis Mona" is a great example, from their album Slania, if you've never heard them.

I like some folk metal and find it enjoyable, but I keep in the back of my mind that it has become sort of a 'scene' as of late.

Here are some folkish bands I listen to:

Agalloch
Eluvetie
Elvenkings first album
Wolfchant
Windir
Wintersun
Ulver
Tyr
Spellblast
Primordial
Heathen Foray
Falconer
Falchion
Ensiferum
Aeveron

I consider myself a metalhead though I think I was more of one in my sophomore year of high school

Buuuut I still dress the part [when I go out, which isn't so often anymore] and I don't really listen to anything else.

Thanks for the list. There are a few I haven't heard of here, and many I have, and I always love listening to new music. :)

seeing Fall of Troy in London in November, cannot wait.

FoT is one of those bands that just gets better and better with each album they put out. I've never heard them live myself, but I'm sure you're gonna have a blast.

Eluveitie are okay. I agree with Deschain: too folky = too cheesy most of the time. It takes really good songwriting to compromise for that.

in related news, Michael Akerfeldt is going to record a solo folk album.

which is not too surprising.

i really hope it's in the vein of the more medieval sections in early Opeth, because i fucking love those, and sorely miss them.

i'd also love more stuff like Still Day and Patterns II.

i think he said in an interview that when he heard Nick Drake, he knew he wanted to record a folk album.

should be interesting, i'm looking forward to it ffs.

i haven't seen anyone mention the chasm here yet, but their latest release, "farseeing the paranormal abysm" is easily one of the best metal albums recently. album of the year for me easily, although i haven't been keeping up with too many releases lately.

Rammstein released their album "Liebe ist für alle da" in the U.S. very recently. It got all around great reviews and it's really good to hear some new material from the group. It has some metal flavoring with the typical ballads that Rammstein is known for.

Exodus, Nuclear Assault, In Flames, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, White Zombie, Bullet For My Valentine (owes more to punk than metal, but still), Machine Head, Behemoth, Celtic Frost, Skindred, Rob Zombie, Death Angel, Within Temptation, Dream Theater, Metal Church, Razor, Exhorder, Monster Magnet, Static-X, Kat, Suicidal Tendencies, Melvins, Black Label Society, Iron Maiden, Children Of Bodom, Dark Angel, Coroner, Type O Negative, Dope, Ministry, At The Gates, Holy Moses. Black Sabbath, Forbidden, Sons Of Otis, Ozzy Osbourne, Whiplash, Venom, Judas Priest, Five Finger Death Punch, Sadus, Voivod, Annihilator, Vio-Lence, Meshuggah, Kreator, Destruction, Shadows Fall, Nightwish, Danzig, Oomph!, Nine Inch Nails, Mushroomhead, Testament, Sepultura, Sodom, Killswitch Engage, Overkill, Morbid Saint, Onslaught, Lordi, Deströyer 666, Motörhead, Deathrow, Artillery, Antrax, Megadeth, All That Remains, Rammstein (a little bit here and there), Heaven & Hell, DevilDriver, Apocalyptica, Mötley Crüe, Flotsam & Jetsam, Pantera, Metallica, Atreyu, Faith No More, Tool (eh, prog rock more than metal but whatever), Slayer, Mastodon, Fear Factory.

+ Some pre-metal stuff like AC/DC, Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc that could be considered metal but is more hard rock.

atm really into thrash, at least 50 bands that I want to check out. Also looking into some doom.

Damn I am glad I am not the only Celtic Frost fan here, Motorhead is a big plus too.

I listen to a lot of All That Remains, Dream Theater, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine, and a bit of Yngwie Malmstein. I also love Ska =P

The ballads are terrible. Rest of the album rules.

Anyone heard of blind gaurdian,I have been told to listen to them so i decided to download the discography.Anyone mind telling me if they are worth it and whats good/bad about them?
@Altmer

and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt.

they are one of the better bad power metal bands. as in, if you like 90s/00s power metal, you'll probably like blind guardian. listen to nightfall in middle-earth and somewhere far beyond.

what groudon80 said plus imaginations from the other side, that is their best album.

also what do you mean by better bad power metal lol

bad as in too cheesy. the good bands don't sound recycled: manilla road, jag panzer, adramelch, etc.

I don't think one can argue about things being "too cheesy" when we're talking about metal.

Taking oneself too seriously, on the other hand...

EDIT: On the subject of Blind Guardian, I quite like them. Only power band I've found that are worth listening, but I haven't searched that far.
