Well, I've been playing around with Mightyena for a while, and I'm actually surprised by the results. While he lacks the raw power of the other Dark-types of UU, his Speed (surprisingly enough, (thanks to Quick Feet)) is what separates him from the pack (no pun intended).

Plans:
- Complete overhaul
- Remove Choice Band (?)
- Remove Howl, add to other options
- Add Quick Feet Abuser Set

[Overview]

<p>Mightyena scavenges the DPP battlefield as arguably the worst fully evolved Dark-type in the game. Aside from its Attack (which is just decent) Mightyena's stats are awful, and its movepool, which somehow lacks Pursuit (even more perplexing considering that Mightyena is based on a hyena), is horrid. Its only saving grace is its access to two great abilities, Quick Feet and Intimidate, that allow it to at least function in the UU metagame. When it comes down to it, if you're looking for a Dark-type for your team, you're probably better off choosing one that does what Mightyena can and then some, such as Absol, Drapion, or Skuntank.</p>

[SET]
name: Stallbreaker
move 1: Taunt
move 2: Super Fang
move 3: Crunch / Rest
move 4: Sucker Punch / Toxic
item: Leftovers
nature: Adamant
ability: Intimidate
evs: 248 HP / 116 Atk / 144 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Mightyena has just enough Speed, a satisfactory movepool, and the (Intimidate-enhanced) bulk to function as a usable stallbreaker. Super Fang and Taunt form the crux of the set, and when combined completely shut down many of the common walls found on stall teams, such as Chansey and Registeel. The idea when using this Mightyena is to switch in on a wall as it uses a harmless move, such as Softboiled, and Taunt them. Mightyena is then free to use Super Fang to immediately strip the wall of half of their health, and because of Taunt, they are unable to recover HP. Crunch is recommended for a reliable STAB move; however, Rest can be used in its place to ensure stall teams can't wear down Mightyena with repeated attacks, and heals any status Mightyena may have been exposed to. Sucker Punch is used in the last slot to pick off faster threats and Choice Scarf users, such as Rotom (who is commonly seen on stall teams). Finally, Toxic can be used in place of Sucker Punch to bring down Milotic and Spiritomb when combined with Rest and Taunt.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Intimidate is used as it allows Mightyena to soften the hard-hitters of UU, and allow another teammate, such as Rhyperior, to switch in and set up with greater ease. This usually comes into play when facing more offensive teams, against which Mightyena is more of a liability. However, Mightyena is still able to pick off faster threats, such as Mismagius and Alakazam, with Sucker Punch, so don't throw Mightyena under the bus too soon. The EV spread is designed to allow Mightyena to outpace Adamant Torterra before a Rock Polish, OHKO Rotom, Mismagius, and Alakazam with Sucker Punch, and give Mightyena the most bulk it can get out of the remaining EVs.</p>

<p>Without Quick Feet, Mightyena is not immune to status, so including a partner who can absorb or heal them is highly recommended. Clefable makes the perfect teammate in this regard, as it is able to absorb all forms of status, and cure Mightyena of any status trouble with Heal Bell. Be aware though that they both share a weakness to Fighting-type attacks, so include a Ghost-type on your team to easily remedy this problem. An amazing partner to stallbreaker Mightyena is SubSplit Rotom, as they are able to cover each other's weaknesses almost perfectly, and can beat each other's counters reasonably well. Finally, bulky Psychic-types, such as Uxie and Claydol, make good teammates due to their ability to set up Stealth Rock and absorb any Fighting-type attacks aimed at Mightyena.</p>

[SET]
name: Quick Feet
move 1: Sucker Punch
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Facade
move 4: Howl / Taunt
item: Toxic Orb
nature: Jolly / Adamant
ability: Quick Feet
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>After Toxic Orb activates Quick Feet, Mightyena reaches a blistering Speed stat of 393, enough to outspeed the entire unboosted UU metagame (bar Electrode) while keeping the ability to switch between moves. This would make Mightyena the quintessential revenge killer, if it weren't for Mightyena's lack of offensive power. With a status condition inflicted, Facade becomes Mightyena's strongest attack, which is highly disappointing as it doesn't even get STAB. Fortunately, Mightyena is still powerful enough to KO many frail UU threats with what it has; however, it requires Stealth Rock support to secure several of these KOs. The main idea when using Mightyena mid-game is to bring it in on a Pokemon it can revenge kill with Sucker Punch, such as Rotom, Mismagius, and Alakazam, and eliminate them. After this, Mightyena's Toxic Orb will activate, firing its Speed stat up to blazing levels.</p>

<p>Crunch is used so Mightyena doesn't have to rely on the oftentimes unreliable Sucker Punch for STAB (not to mention that Mightyena's movepool is really poor). The last slot comes down to personal preference. As Mightyena's Attack stat is quite lackluster, Howl can be used to raise it, which will allow Mightyena to 2HKO bulkier threats, such as Venusaur and Uxie. Taunt can be used in its place to shut down walls that will inevitably switch into Mightyena, like Registeel, and it can also prevent specific threats from setting up on Mightyena as it switches out, such as Rhyperior and Aggron.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Some other options that can be used in the last slot include Protect, Super Fang, and Yawn. Protect allows Mightyena to activate its Toxic Orb scott-free while scouting your opponent's switch-in; however, Howl and Taunt are hard to replace, and so are Mightyena's attacking moves. Super Fang strips bulky walls, such as Weezing and Rhyperior, of half their health, allowing Mightyena's teammates to eliminate them more easily. Yawn can cause switches to help Mightyena activate its Toxic Orb.</p>

<p>Toxic Orb is the chosen item for this set as it activates Quick Feet with no drawbacks (other than inflicting poison on Mightyena). Flame Orb cannot be used as, unlike the ability Guts, Quick Feet will not cancel out the Attack drop caused by the burn condition. Finally, Mightyena can switch into Thunder Wave safely, as Quick Feet will still activate and Mightyena will receive the Speed boost as normal. Unfortunately, there is a chance that full paralysis will occur, so don't play too loosely with Mightyena.</p>

<p>In order for Mightyena to be successful, it needs some heavy duty team support. U-turn users are amazing partners, particularly slow users such as Uxie, as they can get Mightyena in safely and activate its Toxic Orb without the need for Protect or utilizing the Sucker Punch strategy described above. Mightyena is easily walled by Registeel, Milotic, Rhyperior, and Weezing, so including a powerful special sweeper on your team will allow Mightyena to bypass these threats. Life Orb Milotic and Physical Sweeper Venusaur make great teammates as they can handle the aforementioned Pokemon quite nicely, and they appreciate Mightyena's ability to pick off faster sweepers, such as Swellow, Sceptile, and Rotom.</p>

[Team Options]

<p>Bulky Psychic-types, such as Slowbro, Exeggutor, and Uxie, make great partners as they can absorb Fighting-type attacks aimed at Mightyena, and provide dual screen support to compensate for Mightyena's poor defenses. Additionaly, Uxie has the added benefit of providing Stealth Rock support and a slow U-turn to get Mightyena onto the battlefield safely. Mightyena is capable of causing many switches, so Stealth Rock and Spikes support is highly recommended. Great teammates to supply these entry hazards include Claydol, Qwilfish, and Omastar. Moltres and Altaria are awesome partners as well, as they can blow right through the walls that stand in Mightyena's way, and absorb any incoming Bug- and Fighting-type attacks.</p>

<p>Bulky Grass-types that can easily eliminate Milotic, such as Venusaur and Tangrowth, are invaluable teammates for Mightyena, as Milotic is one of the hardest stops to any Mightyena set. Finally, Ghost-types, particularly Mismagius, Rotom, and Dusclops, have perfect synergy with Mightyena, covering each other's weaknesses perfectly.</p>

[Optional Changes]

<p>A Choice Band set is conceivable; however, Mightyena's lack of a strong STAB move and utterly horrible physical movepool puts that idea to rest. Fire Fang is Mightyena's most powerful attack against Tangrowth and Registeel, but even then Mightyena is unable to 3HKO them without Stealth Rock and Spikes support. Rock Smash is Mightyena's alternative answer to Steel- and Rock-types, especially Aggron, but has no use outside of that. Finally, Toxic can be used alongside Protect and Wish support to effectively stall out the enemy; unfortunately, Mightyena is almost directly outclassed by Arcanine in this regard thanks to the latter's access to reliable recovery in Morning Sun.</p>

[Counters]

<p>There is no shortage of counters to this poor mutt, as its mediocre Attack stat and low defenses make the hyenas from the Lion King seem more intimidating. Spiritomb is an excellent counter thanks to its immunity to Super Fang and Facade, and it can rip Mightyena to shreds with Hidden Power Fighting. Registeel, Aggron, and Steelix take almost no damage from any of Mightyena's attacks outside of Super Fang, and can easily retaliate with Earthquake, and in Aggron's case, Head Smash. Weezing easily outstalls any Mightyena thanks to Pain Split and its immunity to Toxic. Rhyperior takes little damage from anything Mightyena can dish out, and can proceed to use it as set-up fodder. Bulky Fighting-types, such as Hariyama and Hitmontop, can easily pound Mightyena into the dust with their STAB moves. Tangrowth, Leafeon, Milotic, Blastoise, and Miltank can soak up any attack Mightyena throws at them and eliminate it. Basically, when dealing with Mightyena, use a bulky Pokemon, avoid Super Fang, and you've countered it.</p>

Uh, why does Mightyena have to be so frail...

Anyway, I don't know why we have a Pokemon with Intimidate and we're not using it. Personally, I think Mightyena can serve as a usable (By usable, I mean there are heaps of Pokemon that'll do better than it) stallbreaker. I'm just going to theorymon this set now, but I might go test it later:

Mightyena @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP/172 Atk/84 Spe
Nature: Adamant
-Taunt
-Super Fang
-Crunch/Rest
-Sucker Punch/Toxic/Yawn

This set isn't exactly THAT useful since Stall isn't too effective with Heracross running around, but Mightyena should be able to switch into pretty much any wall, Taunt it and soften it up with Super Fang. EVs are used to outspeed minimum speed Milotic. EDIT: WTF DOES THIS NOT HAVE PURSUIT OMG OMG OMG

I liked this one. Mightyena is quite the little helper. First he Taunted some stupid Curse Registeel and Super Fang'd it down to Venusaur's EQ kill range, then he killed a Kabutops. Intimidate is seriously the best ability ever, which let Rhyperior take a Close Combat from Heracross like a champ and sweep half the opponent's team.

More Mightyena epicness. Hehehe

^That Mightyena set works really well with heavy hitting Choice users like Scyther and Heracross, really hurts the Pokemon that give them the most problems, i.e. Ghosts, sturdy walls, ect. Intimidate is a boon for the little guy, and Super Fang combined with Sucker Punch is just awesome. Even if the opponent switches in something frail, they'll be whittled down to KO range for Sucker Punch. It's genius, not only does it rip through stall, but it screws up bulky offense and balanced teams too.

Has Toxic/Yawn ever found any serious use? Or Rest, for that matter? The only thing I see Toxic having use for is Spiritomb, and Super Fang already forces a lot of switching, so Yawn doesn't help much. Rest isn't that good either without Heal Bell support, Mightyena would much rather have Wish support instead with all the switch-in countering it'll be doing.

Not really. I'm only using Rest and Lanturn Heal Bell support at the moment because Mightyena can actually tank a few hits, and it'll be a shame to waste that, but stuff like Toxic and Yawn are purely filler.

What don't you like about the Quick Feet set? Granted, it's a little more situational than the Stallbreaker set, but if you're able to save him to the end of the battle, he cleans up really nice, being able to outspeed frickin' everything and finishing off a lot of threats. Anything he can't beat he can Taunt or at least knock off a good chunk of their health with his attacks.

It requires a little more team support than the Stallbreaker set, as he can't get by a good portion of UU by himself, but then again, that's why he is NU.

I think if you posted a couple of logs it could probably help convince Heysup of it's effectiveness. I myself can't really vouch for it since the one time i was up against it, I raped it with my Golbat (Golbat is awesome btw) because the Mightyena wasn't statused, and therefore was not fast enough to outspeed. Maybe you should add Protect in as the first slash for the set since it's much better than taunt except for instant recovery, which can be stalled out by facade in most situations do to its high PP. Really I can only see the Quick Feet working against Hyper Offensive teams.

Anyway, since the set's merits aren't really obvious at first glance, it probably wouldn't hurt to get some logs :D.

EDIT: You should probably slash Fire Fang in the Quick Feet set with Sucker Punch. Otherwise you lose against all Steel types. At least mention it in the AC.

I would mention Fire Fang if it at least 2HKO'd Registeel, which it doesn't iirc. Otherwise, yeah, I'll get some logs.

Ok, I guess all that Mightyena has of mighty is its name... Well, remove Taunt and make Fire Fang the primary option for move 4 on the Quick Feet set, as you definitely don't want to be walled by something so common as Registeel. Added to that, I fail to see many merits of Taunt in this set, as Mightyena doesn't have defenses to take a hit and Protect would already nullify random status before your orb is activated. I'd also consider giving Mightyena an Adamant nature slash, because 279 Attack with no boost from Life Orb is not going to take you far, even if it comes at the cost of losing to base 115 and up.

Stallbreaker set looks nice.

All right I removed Taunt, but I still don't see the merit of Fire Fang. I've played with it, and it doesn't help... at all. Registeel takes ~25% from Fire Fang. Added Adamant as a slash too.

Then use Rock Smash. It lowers defenses and it's not like you're losing out on anything. Plus you can nail aggron, bastiodon, etc. harder. Honestly, it's a Mightyena. Can't do much with it. The fact that we are resorting to Rock Smash to make a set viable is a bad sign in itself lol.

Also, maybe you could consider slashing Sucker Punch and Crunch together and slashing Fire Fang with Crunch as well. Although Mismagius can sub up when you try to attack it with Sucker Punch, it allows for more coverage while retaining Protect, which is almost completely vital in the set.

OK, here are some logs. There is nooo way I'm putting Rock Smash on this set, and I hate, hate, hate Fire Fang. There is just no way around it, Mightyena cannot, I repeat, cannot, do anything to Steel-types, Rhyperior, Weezing, and Milotic. Simple as that really. That's why he's NU. Because he doesn't have a way around them.

I'm going to argue for Taunt in the last slot, because there were a couple of battles where I didn't have it, and I wish I had, (such as Taunting an Aggron from Rock Polishing, Taunting a Milotic from using Recover, etc.)

I don't know how everyone else is using Quick Feet Mightyena, but I play him as a Revenge Killer / Cleaner. He may not have the power to kill frailer threats if they are still above ~75%, but if Stealth Rock and Spikes are on the field, then that becomes a real possibility.

The logs that I have showcase a team that I've been playing around with for a couple of days and really like. It consists of a Lead Golbat, Quick Feet Mightyena, SpD Lanturn, Rock Polish Lunatone, SubPerior w/ Stealth Rock, and SubOrbHeraboss.

Funnily enough, I was unable to, or was too noobish to, get Stealth Rock up on the field in any of these battles. So, in some cases, such as the one vs. the Ninetales, had I gotten Stealth Rock up, Mightyena would have easily picked off that threat by himself.

Now, whether or not I was facing noobs, or if I'm a noob, Mightyena's merit can be seen in these battles. And, you can tell from some of the logs where I didn't have Taunt, I really wish I had.

I'll get more logs if these don't help at all.

The Stallbreaker set needs Taunt...otherwise it doesn't work.

And the Quick Feet set is just simply too weak. It's fast, but it really can't utilize this Speed with just base 90 Attack and no boost.

I agree with Heysup. After reading your logs I've come to realize that even though Mightyena is extremely fast, it just doesn't kill things (the lack of Life Orb really hurts it too). The only things that Mightyena actually does kill in many of these logs are Pokemon that are at 1 Hp with Sucker Punch.

A suggestion: You can use Me First in the Quick feet set to compensate for Mightyena's horrible movepool :D

So, what's the consensus? Just put the Stallbreaker first and express the Quick Feet's lack of power, or just drop the Quick Feet altogether? I still stand behind the effectiveness of the Quick Feet set and can put up more logs if need be. I have to express again though, that the Quick Feet set is very specialized. It is an amazing revenge killer, and can pick off most weakened threats if they're below 50%.

I'd say drop it. Honestly, if you want a Quick Feet user, go with Ursaring, who is stronger, bulkier, and has a better movepool. If you want a revenge killer who benefits from Facade, Swellow works better. Mightyena can't do much of anything for Quick Feet that stands out above other Pokemon.

EDIT: As though we needed any more proof that the Stallbreaker was amazing...

I love this battle as an example of what Stallbreaker Mightena can do. It defeats two Pokemon unaided, finishes a third, and takes a huge chunk out of Chansey before fainting.

Also, something I've found out. Rest, though ocassionally useful, is majorly outclassed by Crunch. Crunch allows you to beat Mismagius and SubSplit Rotom with proper prediction, as well as giving you a weapon against Mesprit and Uxie leads/supporters. In fact, Crunch is the move I found the most usage for when utilizing Mightyena. Rest should probably be relegated to Additional Comments.

Also, mention SubSplit Rotom in Team Options. Together, they not only utterly annhilate stall, but they really screw up bulky offense and balanced teams too.

Bumping this since it dropped to second page... any other thoughts?

Idk, I still stand behind the Quick Feet set and I don't want to drop it simply because Ursaring and Swellow do it better, unless QC says otherwise.

Added Rotom as a partner but I'll still keep Rest slashed.

^Swellow doesn't get Quick Feet, it gets Guts. EonADS meant that Swellow was a better Facade user, not a better Quick Feet user.

I don't think that the Quick Feet set is good on Mightyena, and should be dropped. Ursaring can use Quick Feet effectively for a couple of reasons: Its Attack stat allows it to hit very hard, it has decent bulk to survive that long, and it has great type coverage. Mightyena, on the other hand, has only a decent Attack stat, poor bulk (especially without Intimidate), and bad coverage. You also mentioned that it makes a good revenge killer, but there are also other Pokemon that can revenge-kill better, such as Scarfed Hera. Besides, Mightyena has to wait a turn for Toxic Orb to activate, which gives opponents the opportunity to flee. Lack of Pursuit hurts it as well. Ironically, if you do manage to kill something with it, Mightyena is easily revenge-killed itself from CB Scyther's U-Turn, Scarfed Hera's Megahorn or Close Combat, or TechniTop's Mach Punch, to name a few. Quick Feet itself is worthy of an AC mention, but unfortunately not for an analysis set.

Yeah yeah I know what EonADS meant about Swellow, jeez.

Anyway, Mightyena actually isn't revenge-killed by CB Scyther as he outruns it and if Stealth Rock is in play, can KO with Facade. All of the Fighting-types are legitimate threats which I forgot to add to AC for the Quick Feet set, but those are about the only ones that can both outpace Mightyena, assuming a Scarf, and significantly threaten him. And what sweeper/cleaner isn't weak to being revenge-killed by Scarf-users, I mean, Ursaring is weak to Choice Scarf Fighting-types too.

Mightyena also outruns Alakazam which otherwise kills Ursaring btw. Quick Feet Ursaring isn't outrun by CB Scyther. Neither is Swellow. I think he meant Choice Scarf Scizor. Anyway, Mightyena's bad attack stat doesn't really justify its use at all. Its attack stat also isn't enough to compensate for the fact that it can't get past steels. In all honesty, I would just drop it.

The 'Quick Feet' set although outclassed in some ways is a viable option considering Mightyena does not have much options anyhow.
[Additional Comments]
- Easily walled by Registeel, Milotic, Rhyperior, Weezing, however none, save for Rhyperior, like Taunt
- Requires good team support to be successful
- U-turn users are good partners, as Mightyena comes in his orb will activate "for free".
- Very focused on outspeeding and removing frail but hard-hitting threats, including Swellow, Scyther, Ursaring, Sceptile, Alakazam, etc.
In your additional comments section for this set, include Ghost-types Pokemon such as Mismagius and Rotom that Mightyena can outspeed and remove and it also resists their STAB (one of Rotom's STAB moves).

My final point is that you should consider removing Taunt from the Quick Feet set and add Super Fang instead. The reason for this is that when you bring mightyena on say a ghost type attack or say a Psychic type Pokemon they are bound to switch to a fighting or steel type Pokemon and to have their health reduced by 50% can easily bring them into OHKO range especially in lategame scenarios where their health will rarely be full, which is the time when Mightyena should be attempting a sweep anyways. Taunt would be used on bulky Pokemon that you cannot hit for solid damage right? Registeel for instance won't bother to status you as you are already poisoned and will almost always go straight for the attacking move (Seismic Toss, Iron Head) so it is not of much use.

I actually found Taunt much more useful than either Protect and Super Fang, as not only does Taunt screw with Registeel, Chansey, and friends as they will typically still try to predict a switch and status whatever would be coming in, either that or try to Stealth Rock, Wish, etc; it also prevents douche bags like DD Feraligatr from coming in and setting up as you switch out. Instead, Mightyena can Taunt as they try to set up, and then you're free to switch to your Feraligatr counter. Even if you mispredict, Mightyena is just bulky enough to survive a Waterfall, (though he may die from his Toxic Orb). If Super Fang + Sucker Punch KOed Feraligatr I'd be more inclined to put it in, but sadly it does not, not even with Stealth Rock. The same can be said for Rock Polish Rhyperior or Torterra, and whatever else is bulky enough to survive a Facade + Sucker Punch from Mightyena and set up.
