M&M Mix and Mega

The orb has been shattered (banned)!

Jolteon/Raikou Unban maybe?

Also rip Orb-turn comps, my beloved (likely OP) teams are dead in the water.
Raikou's already unrestricted, but there's a very large chance both Jolteon & Enamorus gets unrestricted as well, since Red Orb was by far their best sets.
As for Orb-turn comps, I don't think I've seen those type of teams at all, do you have some teams that feature the idea?

Pre-development predictions, keeping it super short. Once OMPL ends I'll have a new personal VR up alongside a fully curated setpedia to go along with it (hopefully)
  • Ursh gets so much better its not funny. I wouldn't be surprised to see a QB on this thing.
  • Solg is gonna likely return to clicking CM and cheesing teams left right and center, unfortunately.
  • Milotic, Slowbro, Rotom-W, and Alomomola are actually at least partly real now
  • Etern stays being Etern and gets sustested again during playoffs
  • Ho-Oh and Garganacl usage drops significantly. I don't think they'll disappear, I just think they'll go down from like 50% usage in OMPL/OMFL down to about 15-20%.
  • Enam and Jolteon loses the BE in UBER while Lando goes from A to UR too
  • People figure out Lugia really isn't all that great outside of Diancite Aeroblast with Solgaleo likely rising to A+ or S very soon
  • Magearna stocks rise by 700%
  • Archaludon stocks rise by 700%
  • Great Tusk stocks rise by 700%
  • Iron Treads stocks rise by 50%
  • Rain becomes actually flexibly playable and buildable again
  • Tyranitarite usage increases marginally, Rhyperior shows its face to terrorize unprepared teams for the 4th gen in a row
  • Kilowattrel avoids unrestriction for the 4th time this gen
  • I can actually start building unique teams rather than reusing the same 3 mons every build (Chessking345 is scared of what I have on the stove)

Since Red Orb is B-B-b-BANNED I get to spread the suffering. And by suffering I mean making more stupid weather teams that work but shouldn't without fearing Landorus' big balls. Me personally I don't think the Red Orb was too broken but It was definitely hard to play around even with a stupid gimmick.

Following the Suspect Test results and banning of Red Orb, The council voted on these 2 and agreed with their best set gone, neither of the pokemon are overbearing in the current metagame.
Moreover, we will be having a watchful eye on certain maybe-problematic elements like Lugia or Urshifu in the new meta and decide on an action (if necessary) with their showings in upcoming week of ompl.

The council conducted a Slate to judge some problematic elements in this new meta

1719802193918.png

As such, Solgaleo is now restricted from holding mega stones in Gen9 Mix and Mega.

With a rise in Aerodactylite Adamant sets and the viability of Calm Mind sets being boosted after Red Orb being banned, we felt that Solg pressurizes the builder a little too much for it to be considered healthy.

The rest of sets will still be in our watchlist even if we all unanimously agreed they are fine as of now.

Why is Kilowattrel still restricted? Since the two stones it used (Pidgeotite and Red Orb) are banned, I don't see the point of keeping it restricted
Honestly would like to know myself, but that's a thing for the council to discuss (Career Ended poke) once the other problem stuff is sorted. Generally though it just clicks Endeavor into strong move that lacks common bulky resists thanks to Lucarionite or Blue Orb.

Hey a little update.
The Mix and Mega council is happy to welcome Slither Wing and zastra to the table. Not only that but we are also bringing back Icemaster as his meta knowledge has been on display in OMPL lately. Unfortunately it's not all good news, as Redflix has decided to step down from co-tier leader and council member. We thank you for the work you've done.

I'll also include some personal thoughts here as OMPL has concluded. I'm pretty satisfied w/ the meta atm, Solgaleo ban was definitely warranted as that thing is a nightmare. There's been pretty good balance since the Rorb ban and I'd say many different team structures can be successful right now.

There is a vote up, so expect another post from the council here shortly. Some stuff that has been on our radar lately might be getting action. As for the kilowat, I personally think it's worth unbanning as sets like Blue orb and Lucarionite could have a niche and probably aren't all too strong. Unless there's some kind of oversight on my part, it's likely to be unbanned.
I'll explain some thoughts about some problematic Pokemon I think might be a bit strong in the meta.

:garganacl: garganacl
Garg abuses its signature move and bulk a bit too well in Mnm. imo. Salt cure is viciously strong into the MnM metagame, as many Pokemon are carrying mega stones and therefore lack passive recovery, not to mention reliable forms of recovery. Garg is also premier Stealth Rock setter in the tier, as it forces progress on all common removal Pokemon (spinners tusk/leki, defog corv, mandi but less so). Garg really benefits from the significant lack of viable grass types in the tier, something that helps keep it in check in other tiers. I'd also say it's set variety is quite palpable, as it's stone diversity is very solid, with all of Latiasite, Sablenite, Aggronite, Pinsirite, Altarianite, and Tyranitarite all being viable options. Pinsirite and Altarianite especially are annoying to consider on an unrevealed garg, as taking a -ate boosted body slam (or worse, explosion) is dangerous. I wouldn't say there is a lack of answers, just that the abundance of the metagame is super vulnerable to salt cure, especially when considering offensive options. Offensive teams are always vulnerable as they struggle to fit Pokemon that both don't mind taking a salt cure and can force garganacl out or force progress in another fashion, it's mostly specific Great Tusk sets that can manage this. Many of the options to deny salt cure progress are passive, such as Hippowdon or Arceus-G (arguably not passive, but levitate is everywhere so it usually is in practice). Our viable regenerators are Slowking and Mola, and neither one can really threaten garg all too well and really just want to be slow pivoting out, which they can't even do because min speed ivs garg on any stone and especially Sablenite can reach the lowest speed tiers necessary to underspeed and prevent the slow pivot. The list of Pokemon that threaten garg immediately is honestly not that small, but gargs bulk lets it often trade a salt cure for an attack that would be a 2HKO and force lots of damage onto the attacker, while garg can find an opportunity to heal later in the match. Many players have submitted to running covert cloak on Pokemon Lunala and Eternatus to really deny progress. This is especially concerning when garg can carry eq and curse and outright run through an etern, depending on whether it could bounce toxic or avoid a sludge bomb poison. While Cloak might have other useful properties, it's primary use is to halt salt cure and I'm not sure if this usage is at all healthy. Another hilarious example of garg being annoying in builder is Arceus-Ground being probably the best answer to Garg, but needs Surf to avoid being sat on by Latiasite.
The thing is that garg has pretty exploitable weaknesses that keep it from being over the top. While it does have a lot of stone variety, I don't know if it really has a lot of set variety. All gargs are going to be carrying cure and recover, but they can really only fit 1 coverage move at a time and either curse or rocks, with protect being ok on Tyranitarite sets as well as being a nice scouting tool. Obviously being pure rock typing means that garg usually isn't carrying a lot of useful resistances, which is pretty bad for a slow defensive Pokemon. Substitute is an option on many different attackers that can be very punishing for a garganacl player. Garg is also susceptible to opposing hazard, namely Stealth Rock though non Pins/lati are also punished for switching into spikes or toxic spikes.
Honestly, I'm pretty close to sold on a garg qb, and would really be in favor of suspecting it if it doesn't have the support

:eternatus: eternatus
im still not entirely sold on this guy. I was flip flopping pretty hard during its suspect and now that rorb is gone I honestly think its gotten quite a bit better. the physically defensive set is very splashable rn, seeing a lot of usage. the offensive sets are still dangerous into the right teams as well, and it can do a lot of different things. pressure and recover are very good traits in the meta, as well as having item utility such as boots, helmet, lefties and other stuff like eject button/pack or covert cloak. I don't really know if it will get the support but honestly i'd be very curious to see the meta with out etern.

:lugia: lugia
this guy has evolved a lot in the last little while. lugia is pretty scary when unrevealed imo, since its counterplay isn't entirely linear outside of bringing in the steel types. solgaleo leaving is a bit of an open door for lugia, as it can now run super fast sets that click psychic noise and don't have to run epower for fear of being a complete 0 into the lion. Super fat Sable sets are a nightmare vs unprepared offenses while super fast absols can also be for different reasons. Diancite has also seen usage, and it still has the capacity to go mixed with either that stone or Lucarionite. It's not particularly strong unboosted and doesn't have any great utility really, but its quite restrictive in the builder mostly due to CM sets. Psychic Noise can force opposing CM wars to favor Lugia pretty quickly as it compliments well with its naturally high speed. It's bad movepool limits it into dark types like mandi, gyara clod and even offensive stuff like kingambit or darkrai. It has strange interactions with lunala, where the winner of a Cm war is dependent on a lot of different factors, but it can just ignore that and run shadow ball if it wants. I wouldn't vote quickban on it right now, but it's definitely a mon worth keeping an eye on.

now some other stuff i'll talk about.

:urshifu: urshifu-rapid-strike
hmm this guy is still nearing the edge of ok in my opinion. It did pass the suspect and it does seem to be alright for now, but he still gives me shivers. not sure what everyone else is using but stuff like sub sd punishs garg super hard, while sd spinner stabs is super busted into certains structures. it also gets u-turn which makes everything complicated. Lugia, dnite and helmet Etern are really annoying for him, but he still has ways past them. for now it seems like im the only one with an eye on it so i won't go on for long, but just know that I'm still on the fence about this guy.

:dragonite: Dragonite
ice seems pretty eager to get some action on dnite, and i dont blame him tbh. this thing is always way more dangerous in practice imo. dragon dance espeed is just too good and it can sometimes just run into the right stuff to completely make a fool of people. it doesn't help that most of the good answers to it are passive or liable to getting chipped or just completely fucked if they switch into +2 +2. I don't think theres near enough support for dnite, but man this thing is still good, when we do viability rankings again ill be hard pressed to keep it out of S/A+ range.

now some not so broken stuff that i just think needs a little spotlight

:darkrai: darkrai
this guy is actually a huge threat. its movepool and stats are great and its really one of the only good dark types around atm. Since the best stones are probably absol and manec, its speed tier is super crazy after mega so it rarely needs 252 timid, allowing it quite a bit of bulk. Packing nasty plot, a great stab in dark pulse that can flinch and the coverage it wants in sludge bomb, ice beam and focus blast this thing can really blow holes into stuff. willo wisp is a great tool it can abuse with manectite to tank physical hits and let it cripple many of its switch ins. for reference if you pack a little bulk you can lead off with it, live a dnite altarianite espeed and burn him, or outspeed metagrossite urshifu and then tank the close combat. Solgaleo leaving is actually kind of bad for it, as Darkrai was probably one of the best catch all switchs into it, with manectite being able to tank even a +0 aerodactylite sunsteel.

:iron-crown: iron crown
this guy steps into a lot of solgaleos roles quite well. for one absolite has a great speed tier, hitting 412 after mega to outpace meta shifu, etern and others under 138 base speed. it can fit either focus blast or sub alongside cm on these sets with tachyon and psynoise being great stabs. Lucarionite/latiasite/venusaurite are also pretty potent for these reason, and it can also go pretty versatile with stuff like iron defense or agility. way more one dimensional than solgaleo, but effective nonetheless.

:magearna: Magearna
this guy really enjoys the rest of the fruits left behind by solgs ban, as the utility sets are very good rn. it can really only fit one of spikes or encore, which is annoying and this guy definitely has really bad 4mss. Nonetheless it slow pivots, hits hard, spreads para, and uses intimidate, levitate or magic bounce quite well. Sablenite Substitute pain split is quite solid at blocking garg rocks off rip and forcing progress against offense and BO. Stuff like CM+sg/id on borb/venu/lati/bronite will always be niche viable covering different things and being generally quite threatening with its base 130 spatk and fleur cannon, not to mention soul heart pre mega and storedpower/draining kiss. lastly Pinsirite is always just such a wildcard that can sweep unprepared teams as it really enjoys being able to fit encore alongside stabs that can paralyze and flinch.

:Great-tusk: great tusk
Think this guy is a bit under the radar rn, tho hard to say that as he's undeniably a top 3 removal option. my opponents in ompl definitely picked up that i was spamming pinsirite by the end, but really who can blame me. Metagrossite and other sets like lopunnite are alright, and this thing really abuses bulk up well on any set. All in all just a really solid pick at the moment

:raging-bolt: raging bolt
kind of can't believe we didn't load this guy. he's hard to fit on teams i feel, but such a strong teammate when you have him. lucarionite is definitely the guy, tho i speculated about some less serious stuff like altarianite, latiasite, pinsirite and sablenite at points. Pretty crazy mon to switch into if you can account for weather ball in the builder, as slowking-g can provide snow pretty consistently on plenty of builds (bolt is almost impossible to fit on rain i've found). dropping dracos is fun but nearly every team has both a fairy and a ground type, so creativity is absolutely required when building with this one

:zamazenta: zamazenta
another budzo that i wish we'd loaded more. no one was really loading lugia in the middle weeks of ompl and thats really the only hiccup this guy has. lunala and arc ghost are usually losing 1v1 due to crunch and drops. helmet etern in theory is a great answer, but in reality he gets 2hkod at +5 and if they're both at full its nearly always a trade. there was a game where our player lost a won game because they didnt iron defense again into a helmet etern. sub also makes zama the most consistent garg punisher in the game. you can afford +defense on metagrossite sets because its so fast too. just a good change of pace into a lot of the meta, doing crazy things like subbing on ho-oh brave bird at +3.

anyway ill probably call this post here as ive rambled for a bit now. I'll unfortunately be too busy to sign up for mnm ssnlm which means ill not be returning to defend my ompl title, but i'll probably be online here and there if anyone wants to shoot me a message im always avail to talk, sometimes avail to game.

New Council, New Votes!
g79JKvC.png

For the first two actions of our newest council, we decided to take a look at Kilowattrel and Garganacl.

Kilowattrel has been banned since the days of Pidgeotite, but even when that mega stone was banned Red Orb was still more than stupid enough on it to ensure it never saw the light of day. With that banned, however, it's a less obvious decision; Lucarionite is obscenely fast and powerful, but its options for hitting electric resists are either weak or innacurate. Blue Orb, meanwhile, has both perfectly accurate hurricanes and weather ball to delete would-be rock and ground checks but struggles with a significantly worse speed tier and much less offensive power. It's not impossible that Kilowatt is still too much, but there's not enough evidence to leave it banned sight unseen, so it is once more free to use Mega Stones.

Garganacl, meanwhile, is a tiering action that should make sense even to people who have only started playing recently - it's a solid blanket tank used by a number of balance teams to fend off threats like Arcanine-Hisui or Dragonite, that also doubles as one of the metagame's most reliable rockers and is one of the few walls able to avoid the fate of passivity; even pokemon that don't take much from its attacks don't like setting up or coming in on salt cure, so it's much less of a momentum sink than most of its peers. This combination of utility and splashability has been enough to convince some that it is simply too good for the current metagame, and while it didn't get enough support for a quickban council is keeping an eye on it. Another vote or suspect is entirely possible if things continue as they are, but for the moment, Garganacl remains free to mega evolve.

Clas

Garganacl is annoying because it's incredibly hard to switch even its counters into it. Anything that switches in risks taking a Salt Cure or allowing the Garganacl to set up Stealth Rocks, which makes switching around even more difficult. An example of a would-be counter could be Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, which can deal a lot of supereffective damage to Garganacl. However, switching into a salt cure and potentially stealth rocks forces the urshifu to take 37% Turn 1, and then risk taking another 25% if it goes for Surging Strikes or Close Combat into the Garganacl that can simply switch out. Slow pivoting mons also don't work as a way to switch strong attackers in because Garganacl with min speed can underspeed the pivots. Only Great Tusk can actually threaten a lot of damage while also being able to remove hazards.

womp womp, it's been a while since OMPL but ive been lazy so i havent posted anything which is lame on my part but...oh well!

here's some general thoughts and sets i was using that i like

:eternatus: + :ho-oh: + :hippowdon:
Eternatus @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Pressure
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 104 HP / 248 Def / 156 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dynamax Cannon
- Toxic
- Flamethrower
- Recover

Ho-Oh @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Atk / 92 SpD / 64 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Will-O-Wisp / Imprison / Whirlwind / Brave Bird
- Earthquake
- Sacred Fire
- Recover

Hippowdon @ Sablenite
Ability: Sand Stream
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 80 Def / 172 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Slack Off
- Earthquake
- Crunch
This is the defensive core I spammed most and if I was actively playing I would continue to spam it because it covers so many bases. Generally it's physdef Eternatus + defensive Ho-oh + spdef Sablenite Hippo but you can tailor it to anything you want to cover (LO Eternatus can fit here, max atk Ho-oh, Pins Hippo. Or you can swap Tusk or Groundceus for hippo, etc). This core can be abused some by voltturn cores like Urshifu + Raging Bolt, Sandy Shocks, etc. but if you need a basic core to cover most threats, it's great. I think I used some variation of this 3 times.

:arceus: :spooky_plate:
just run sub/cm/judge/recover and whatever EVs you want.
Let it be known that even though redflix toasted Icemaster with it in a much more important game than my own it was MY IDEA FIRST!! The inspiration is literally just that Garganacl was pissing me off, and people think that you can just Salt Cure any bulky sweeper you want and it's taken care of. Well, dark-types don't REALLY exist in this meta (besides Mandi ig on the defensive side but that's a fake mon) and Blissey is actual doggy doodoo (believe me I've tried to make it work) so...that means that ghost Judgement is free af in this meta...Because Garganacl only runs Salt Cure most of the time (or Body Press every once in a while) (or Pins Explosion) I wanted a mon that took advantage of that to Sub up and start spamming CM and Judgement. And it worked. Twice. Cool mon, you can also fit stuff like Focus Blast/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam if you'd like, or Wisp. Tech it however you like.

:indeedee: :terrain_extender:
https://pokepast.es/80b7d32771ec924c

note: the Substitute spam on the team is because I knew Ice spammed a lot of Garg and fat so I wanted to bring quite a few Anti-garg techs. It can definitely be optimized a LOT, a fair amount was MU fish so please don't use this without adjusting it some or I'll be mad.
Psyterrain offense is great and extremely underdeveloped considering how potent it is. I do feel the need to shout out kDCA even though I'm not sure if it was his idea first, he was just the one who introduced it to me. So many teams rely on -atespeed for speed control and Indeedee takes great advantage of that. Mons like Kommo-o are so strong, especially with boosts and now that Solgaleo is banned, which was the main issue I was running into when bringing this team, there's so much room for optimizing mons and moves and making it even better.

:lunala:
PLEASE stop bringing shitty defensive Lunala and start running sets like Covert Cloak CM, Boots CM, Power Herb, and Specs. CM + Moongeist + Moonblast/Ice Beam + Roost carves up so many teams and is barely used. You don't even have to worry about Crunch Solgaleo ruining your day. SPAM THIS MON PLEASE IT'S BUSTED :sob:

:raging_bolt:
Lucarionite CM...what else do I have to say...it's also crazy, USE IT

:raging_bolt: :magearna: :urshifu-rapid-strike:
Magearna @ Manectite
Ability: Soul-Heart
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Grass Knot
- Spikes

Raging Bolt @ Lucarionite
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 216 HP / 252 SpA / 40 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Draco Meteor
- Volt Switch
- Thunderclap

Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Metagrossite
Ability: Unseen Fist
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Ice Spinner
- U-turn
This is a fififlutters core (I do not claim ownership) and it's great. Pain Split is genuinely a fake move on fast Spikes Magearna, Urshifu-R + Raging Bolt carves up most teams, and as long as you fill out the team with strong fast mons it's pretty easy to win games vs most of the mid balance people load.

:slowbro:
Even though this mon doesn't get Teleport anymore (Massive L) you can still run standard fat CM sets with Sablenite or Manectite and be fine. You still run into issues vs Urshifu-R volt-turn but Slowbro is about as sturdy a check as you can get. Psychic Noise makes this mon even more annoying to go up against, and Scald is still busted.

:milotic:
This mon is still not very good. Stop using it. Use Swampert. Milo is still passive, still easily abused, and only functions as a Scald bot 99% of the time.

:dondozo:
Dondozo (M) @ Rocky Helmet / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Curse
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Wave Crash
Genuinely...pretty decent? Don't even run a stone, Helmet/Boots is enough. I haven't found a structure I LOVE this on yet but Dozo is extremely effective at cucking all the physical attackers in this tier (Urshifu, Groundceus, Ho-oh, Dragonite) and just clicks whatever moves it wants. It exists solely as a stopgap and applies 0 offensive pressure meaning at times it's a momentum sap and free switch into Etern/Bolt for the opposing team, but it's also an AMAZING stopgap, so...

:mandibuzz:
Please. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEEEEEEE (by sabrina carpenter). Please stop using this mon without Foul Play. If I see another mono-U-turn Mandibuzz I will commit a crime. It's so bad. Tox/U-Turn/Roost/Defog has to be the worst set I've ever seen. Do not run this mon without Foul Play. And don't run Gyaradosite Defog either?? The whole point in running Mandibuzz as your removla is that it's a flying-type, meaning you don't get absolutely owned by Spikes...stop that....

and that's all, see you all in ssnl maybe..hopefully, if i remember to sign up

Osake smells bad

Hi I managed to top the ladder with sinistcha @ venu.

Heres the team:

I guess you could arceus ghost instead of sinistcha but thats no fun.

Also shoutout to heatran, extremely underrated mon and handles a lot of meta threats, specifically pixi dragonite.
can attest to this team being p decent albeit unconventional (didnt play vs it or against it but watched multiple actually decent games with it present), only issue i have with it is why is treads iron head noooo

OP mostly taken from Gen 7 Mix and Mega thread

Rules:
Mix and Mega is an Ubers-based metagame that allows you to use any transformation item on any permitted pokémon. When that Pokémon then transforms, it undergoes the same stat modifications that the original user of that item does, along with its ability and any type changes that the altered form has compared to the base species. Primarily this takes the form of the Gen 6 Mega Evolution mechanic, with the usual restrictions of one per team removed, but also included are the Red and Blue Primal Orbs as well as the Gen 8 Rusted items.

FAQ:
Q:
How many Pokémon may I mega evolve on a team?
A: You may Mega Evolve any number of Pokemon on the same team.

Q: How do Mega Stones that add types function on Pokémon that are given a secondary type equivalent to their primary type?
A: If you use a Mega Stone that gives you a secondary typing that's the same as your primary typing, you no longer have a secondary typing (ie: Altarianite Togekiss). In the case of Aggronite, any Pokémon using this stone will lose their secondary typing (ie: Aggronite Tyranitar)

Q: Why does my Darmanitan-Zen revert to its base form upon Mega Evolution?
A: Mega Evolutions cannot be based off of alternate in-game form changes, and hence they revert to their original forme.

Q: Can Knock Off, Trick, e.t.c. be used to remove a transformation item from its holder?
A: A Mega Stone cannot in any way removed from its holder if the holder can Mega Evolve with it, regardless of whether the holder is the "correct" species or not. The same goes for the Primal Orbs and Rusted Items.

Q: What happened to Aggronite?
A: Aggronite remains in the metagame but has updated mechanics that will now remove the secondary typing instead of adding Steel typing. However, Rusted Sword and Rusted Shield do add Steel typing to pokemon that hold them.

Q: What about native Mega Evolutions (like Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite)?
A: Native Mega Evolutions are only allowed if the Pokémon in question isn't restricted from Mega Evolving AND if the Mega Stone is allowed.

what happens if you have diancie's stone on a Mon with less then 40 defence?

Hello everyone! It's been a hot minute since OMPL, but with OMWC ongoing and OM Championships coming up just around the corner the Mix & Mega council has decided to release a mini-survey to see what people think of the tier's current state. There have been some discussion surrounding potentially problematic elements, and as such we'd like to see what the public's general concensus is before we act. Enjoy!
