Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Some interesting combinations that I’ve used that I believe may have merit:
Minior-Green @ Cornerstone Mask
Ability: Shields Down
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Power Gem
- Earth Power
- Psychic
Effectively one of the sole good users of Cornerstone Mask, Minior trades its Flying type for Sturdy and 1.2x power boost. If Extreme Speed users are removed, it can clean up games, and can get in one hit without Shell Smash on said ESpeed users.
Barraskewda @ Blue Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flip Turn
- Liquidation
- Close Combat
- Psychic Fangs
More ESpeed fodder, but can get away with the +50 attack boost from Blue Orb and more power with Water moves.
Glastrier @ Staraptite
Ability: Chilling Neigh
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Crunch
- Body Press/Sleep Talk
- Rest
Glastrier turns from a slow, bulky Ice type attacker into a mono Fighting tank. It has defenses of 100/160/140, and STAB boosted Close Combat off of a 165 attack stat. It would be leagues better if it got reliable recovery though.
With how much Mix and Mega has evolved since Gengar was originally restricted, I believe it's worth re-evaluating whether the reasons behind its restriction still hold true today.
Point 1: Gengar's role is replaceable
Compared to today's top offensive threats, Gengar often feels like a worse version of Pokémon that provide similar offensive pressure while also offering more utility.
@ Zygardite — Faster than Gengar and has access to pivoting, making it a much more effective cleaner and late-game win condition.
@ Zygardite — Possesses even greater Speed and offensive presence than Gengar outside of Shadow Ball.
@ Meganiumite / Chimechite / Diancite / Lucarionite / Eelektrossite — Its incredible versatility, superior stats, and access to Fiery Dance allow it to perform many of Gengar's offensive roles while scaling much better throughout a game.
Point 2: Gengar's offensive niche is no longer unique
One of the original arguments for Gengar's restriction was the limited amount of reliable defensive counterplay. However, Gen 9 Mix and Mega has introduced many more viable defensive Pokémon that can consistently handle it.
Back in Gen 8, common answers included:
@ Gyaradosite
@ Sablenite
@ Sablenite
@ Gyaradosite
@ Sablenite
Since then, the list has expanded considerably.
— With Regenerator, exceptional bulk (106 / 90 / 154), and respectable offensive stats, Ho-Oh comfortably checks Gengar and can threaten it immediately, even if switching into stray Thunderbolts.
@ Gyaradosite — Its immense HP and Special Defense make it incredibly difficult for Gengar to break, while Earthquake threatens an easy KO.
@ Dragalgite — Immunity Ghost, bulkier than Ho-Oh on the special side, and capable of threatening Gengar with STAB Psyshock. Unless Gengar runs Dark Pulse, it struggles to make progress through her.
@ Dragalgite: — Can comfortably switch into Gengar, set Spikes or use Encore, then pivot with Volt Switch into a more threatening teammate.
- having the highest special bulk, ability to cripple or set up on gengar makes blissey effectively an impossible wall to break through
...in addition to all of the defensive answers that already existed in Gen 8.
Overall, Gengar's offensive presence has become easier to replicate and much easier to answer than when it was originally restricted, making it a reasonable candidate for a suspect test.
Staraptite is arguably fine, I’ve found a weirdly good Pokemon for this stone even before it got contrary which was cetitan
And Pyroarite is a reverse meowsticite, with an amazing ability and trash buffs.
raichuite x could work on hands
And (controversial opinion) dragalgite should probably be banned considering the fact that special walls can gain so much from it
Eelektrossite imo seems fine, but I see the reason for a ban(despite the fact that the secondary effect of eelevtate it’s not entirely beast boost, it’s just moxie/soul-heart depending on which stat is higher)
Barbaracite is just a side grade of metagrossite and needs no explanation.
Falinksite is also fairly balanced and healthy
And scraftinite is just the physical version of manectite.
It is. It's just that Mega Eelektross itself stated in a way that the ability can't boost Defense or Speed, because those will never be its highest stat. But the ability does indeed boost your highest by +1.
Mix and Mega is now running a tiering survey to gather community feedback! We will keep it open for about a week, so we'd really appreciate it if you could take a couple of minutes to fill it out as soon as you can. Every response helps. I'll be tagging a few players below as well, but anyone is welcome to fill it up.
We received 45 responses this time around, 14 of them qualified. That's a great turnout, huge thanks to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey.
Enjoyment
General: 7.33/10
Qualified: 7.286/10
Overall reception of the metagame is comfortably positive, though there's still room for improvement.
Competitiveness and Balance
General: 6.822/10
Qualified: 6.857/10
While reception leans positive, respondents clearly desire improvements. The scores, however, have improved since our last survey.
Deoxys-Speed
General: 2.8/5
Qualified: 2.93/5
The community remains divided, with no clear consensus emerging.
Garganacl
General: 2.244/5
Qualified: 2.14/5
The playerbase generally believes Garganacl is acceptable in the metagame.
Arceus-Ghost
General: 2.44/5
Qualified: 2.57/5
Support for action exists, but it is not convincing enough to prioritize.
Entei
General: 2.04/5
Qualified: 2/5
Respondents overwhelmingly oppose taking action on Entei at this time.
Archaludon
General: 3.2/5
Qualified: 2.786/5
Opinion leans towards taking action, though consensus has not yet been reached. The qualified section in particular remains fairly split on Archaludon.
Victreebellite
General: 2.733/5
Qualified: 2.28/5
There's a noticeable difference in opinion between the qualified respondents and the overall playerbase regarding this element, with qualified players being considerably less supportive of tiering action.
Zamazenta
General: 2.31/5
Qualified: 2.21/5
Most respondents do not currently favor tiering action on Zamazenta.
Gengar Retest
Qualified Chart:
The playerbase has shown strong interest in revisiting this element. There is clear support for conducting a retest.
Gholdengo Retest
Although opinions differ on Gholdengo, nearly 70% of respondents expressed some level of openness to a retest. This suggests that revisiting Gholdengo in the future would not be unpopular, but it shouldn't be our priority.
Red Orb Retest
A majority of respondents are open to a Red Orb retest. While only a third explicitly support one, many others indicated they would not oppose revisiting Red Orb despite believing it should ultimately remain banned.
Giratina Retest
Too much blue.
Ursaluna-BM Retest
There is little appetite for an Ursaluna-BM retest at this time. While many respondents would not oppose revisiting it in the future, explicit support for a retest is significantly outweighed by those who believe it should remain banned.
Kyogre Retest
Results are very mixed for Kyogre. A retest is not out of the question in the future, but now's not the correct time.
You may have noticed I didn't post qualified charts for unban suspects bar Gengar. That's because a) they didn't receive noticeable support and b) I didn't want to upset Smogon by attaching too many charts (my draft got deleted the other day as I was writing this). If anyone wants detailed stats and graphs, however, feel free to ping/DM me and I'll send them to you)

We've decided to retest Gengar!
Ultimately, we didn't feel there was a clear standout for a ban or restriction. Archaludon was the only element to cross the 3.0 mark, though its support was noticeably lower among the experienced playerbase. Additionally, recent metagame developments such as the ban of Last Respects and the rise of Regenerator users, particularly Dragalgite Ting-Lus, have made life considerably difficult for Archaludon and rain. There was, however, overwhelming support for a Gengar retest, so we'll be moving forward with that for now.
(If you're wondering why I didn't vote for a resuspect like the rest of the council, I felt quick-unbanning Gengar and suspecting it later if it proved problematic was a better approach for saving time. A straight retest is completely reasonable though)
Expect the suspect to go up within the next few days. Thanks again for all the responses, have a great day

for the sake of public knowledge here's the only set gengar has over spectrier that might make it broken, speed boost eelevate. (imma still run trick room cameruptite/scolipite gengar for the memes tho)

Hiya, since I'm already out of seasonal I thought I'd make a small teamdump + talk about my opinions on the metagame, since I'm not really sure what I think of it currently.
Cool team in theory, sable clod is a pretty solid mon and is basically the only way to stop magearna from making progress in current day, and while the other pieces are cool (Such as Primarina shoutouts) it loses too hard to other hazard setters, especially Ting-Lu, god forbid you try & run something other than Tusk...
(There also is a "fun version" with Annihilape > Waterceus but I think this is a lot better...)
Heat alert, I have no idea how good this is vs other people but it's atleast fun
Overall I think the meta's currently in a fine spot, there are plenty of good mons available and nothing stands out immediately as extremely broken (Deo-S has maybe become a bit more annoying with Chimechite & Staraptite sets and being unable to guess which one it is on preview but ehh) and with Dragalgite balance and fatter teams have seen quite the resurgence. Speaking of, I know a lot of people like Dragalgite but I think I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a fan of its existence, it's yet another very centralizing element introduced to a meta where 99% of teams already have an espeed mon + Great Tusk and on top of that I find it gives far too much value to neglect outside of something like Psyspam or on Screens. I also think MnM has kind of lost another thing unique to it, as we were one of the few OMs not centralized around SpDef Regenbots, which of course we're not anymore (We're even using almost the same exact regen mons as AAA barring Magearna, which AAA would've totally used as well if it didn't have stored power </3 ). Despite this I can't really argue for a ban against it as it's not really broken in that sense, just kind of changes the metagame in a way I'm not entirely a fan of. Nonetheless, it might also be a skill issue and I'm yet to adapt to tje new meta but it's in my opinion far too easy to just slap on Regen Mage + Lati Pecha + Pinstusk onto any team and bam you have a crazy good backbone to go off of, not very exciting stuff.
Lastly, some shoutouts to good mons because the current VR to me has some crazy placements that I don't think are quite right:
Annihilape @ Absolite Z
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Atk / 240 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Rage Fist
- Stealth Rock
- Final Gambit
This guy's really underrated on Offenses imo as both a sort of "suicide lead" but also as a general speed control that forces the opp to consider every single play that they make, Final Gambit is also just an amazing move that works both as a Fuck you Die button but also to stop bulky setups, Absolite Z should def be added to the VR as an option.
Great Tusk @ Rusted Sword
Ability: Protosynthesis
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Headlong Rush
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin
- Close Combat / Stone Edge / Temper Flare
Everybody and their mother's spamming Pinsirite but I find Rusted Sword to often times just be a better option compared to the offensive variants, this guy almost always claims atleast one kill and often more, especially if you get it out early before the opp has had a change to activate their Levitate stones and on top of it all Ground/Steel is just a really good typing to have.
Entei @ Altarianite
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Extreme Speed
- Double-Edge
- Stone Edge
For me I think this is currently the best Espeeder, although Eleki is very close behind. It just has everything going for it, Good offenses Good bulk + typing and a very spammable move in Sacred Fire. I find Stone Edge last to be by far it's most consistent option vs other Entei's, Ho-Oh & Iron Moth, but ig Stomping Tantrum is also alright you just trade Ho-oh for heatranite Steels (Don't run anything else though I have no clue why you'd ever bother with Crunch or Iron Head those are terrible terrible terrible).
Cinderace @ Absolite Z(80/140/75/65/75/195)
4 HP 252 Atk 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Gunk Shot
- High Jump Kick
- Pyro Ball
- Court Change
general counter to hazard teams and e speeders with altarianite & regieleki with glalieite(have not seen anyone run dragonize e speed so far)
i have bad news for you my friend (the bad news is entei) but give it uturn > hjk and this works to some extent, although youd need a very good reason to run cinderace over something like resttalk pinstusk if you really despise hazards
Smeargle @ Absolite Z(55/44/35/20/45/151)
252 Atk 4 Def 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Block(?)
- Fake Out
- Some other form of priority(Shadow Sneak, Accelerock, etc.)
- (hazard options such as sticky web/stone axe/ceasless edge, dire claw is a possibility, literally anything could work)
Smeargle is the Pokémon to pair with Absolite Z(maybe even more then cinderace), and it’s nothing without it.
Magearna @ Hawluchanite(80/140/145/130/140/65)
252 HP 252 SpA 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Focus Blast
- Zap Cannon
- Fleur Cannon
- Calm Mind
Even without the boost to special attack, the power it has with no guard is still insane. The only reason why people thought it was ok was because it was “for physical attackers”. Even if hawluchanite had a nerf to special attack, it would still be good with previous pidgeotite users. Suspect test anyone?
now this has potential, although with a different set. zap cannon is so utterly punishing that (if mage is given a defensive set) something like zcannon/ibeam/spikes/psplit is real. you can also run fleur > ibeam, but ibeam is less punishable at the cost of not being as strong. being able to force a mindgame of zap cannon / spikes is so utterly disgusting that im surprised youre the first to point it out over it already being figured out 4 months into the stone's existence, although ill partially attribute it to magearna's ridiculous stone flexibility (srs why is it viable with 10 stones??)
last-minute ability predictions 4 the remaining non-legendary mega stone abilities:
Absolite Z: Tough Claws
Lucarionite Z: Mega Launcher
Garchompite Z: Dragon’s Maw
Golisopite: Heatproof(a reskin of Water Bubble would be really funny tho)
Baxcaliburite: Thermal Exchange
Tatsugirinite: any decent ability would be fair, they’ll probably do a signature ability 4 it tho
—————————————
legendary mega stone predictions:
Zygardite: Clear Body/Regenerator/something else that fits with mega zygarde’s design
Heatranite: Flash Fire/Flame Body
Darkranite: Bad Dreams/Dark Aura
Magearnite: probably still keeping Soul-Heart
Zeraorite: Volt Absorb/Lightning Rod/Tough Claws/Electric Surge(cite Pokédex entry for mega zeraora)
Obv not on council but I think with the great speed buff plus fluffy jt could push many special attackers with naturally a strong special defense over the edge (iron moth, raging bolt and zapdos come to mind but doubtless others) plus generally fluffy is an incredibly powerful ability so I’m not sure if it would be any less broke
I'm not speaking for council, just for myself here, but I'd be inclined to give it a try. I think there's a good chance it would have to be quickbanned (if anything, fluffy+ seems better than adapt) again but I don't see a problem with testing it.

It is. It's just that Mega Eelektross itself stated in a way that the ability can't boost Defense or Speed, because those will never be its highest stat. But the ability does indeed boost your highest by +1.
Unfortunately these new revealed abilities don't change anything new we've got
Still Bad
Still OP
And Still Bad
Maybe Garchompite Z sees use on like Heatran...? But I have very little hopes for it and absolite-Z.
Let's not kid around with Lucarionite Z, Fantastic offensive donations combined with better fluffy is not balanced.
Hopefully more stones give us some more good ones.
