In other news, Texas makes a really bold move by signing Joe Nathan to close, and moving Neftali Feliz to the rotation. I know they've been wanting to do this for a while, and while the contract was larger than I would have expected for Nathan (2 yr 14.5 mil), it's still not so big that in a pinch Felix couldn't move back to the bullpen and move Nathan into a setup role.

IMO a horrible move by texas, nathan is like the slots in vegas, and a contract of that calliber simply doesnt make sense since we dont know if his history of injuries will return once again. Feliz is a great closer, open and shut case, but gambling that and sending him to the rotation will simply flat out his pitches. 99 becoming 93, slider less break, etc. Obviously they would keep him if they won the WS. RYAN BRAUN U DA MAN!, mvp if anyone didnt see yet

The Red Sox signed right-hander Will Inman and left-hander Justin Thomas for bullpen depth today. Not much of note really. Just wanted to point that out.

huge changes in the new labor deal...and i have to say, small revenue teams get the shaft with draft changes. caps on draft spending (with huge penalties for overspending) means teams like Tampa can no longer exploit the draft with many picks; international spending caps are the same way. the deal is essentially forcing teams to improve via free agency, something that is impossible to do for low revenue teams.

such a shame but MLB really shot itself in the foot with the new CBA.

For some reason, baseball wants to hardslot in the sport which is most difficult to predict the growth of prospects... It really is a bad CBA.

the only thing hardslotting (and it is de fact hardslotting) accomplishes is saving the (billionaire) owners a small amount of money. in exchange, those amateur athletes who are lured to baseball by big bonuses (and they aren't even big bonuses; they are a pittance compared to NFL and NBA draft deals) will just play other sports. baseball already has a shrinking talent pool and this CBA serves to make it even smaller.

It takes some big hits at both small markets and large markets. I don't like many of the change of rules myself because it negatively affects my BoSox. But at least we don't have a strike right?

And the Red Sox have reportedly hired Bobby Valentine officially.

'Bout damn time.

Looks like Ben got screwed over for a second time by Larry...

However, it's one of those verbal agreements things. It's not written down, announced, or approved by ownership yet. I'm not saying that this will not happen, just don't take your verbal agreements to court just yet, as Carlos Boozer says hello.

Secondly, Royals sign Jonathan Broxton to a four million dollar contract with a possible one million dollars in incentives based on games pitched.

Thirdly, CJ Wilson appearantly is asking for a $100 million contract, and the Angles appear to be willing to take the risk. I personally expect him to sign by the weekend.

Lastly, I wanted to share this with those fellow Red Sox fans who didn't see it yet. I find it all too funny.

I honestly thought Miami was going to blow this offseason by spreading their offers too thin and nobody thinking they were serious. HOWEVER: this was the right move. It didn't matter if it was Bell, Madson, or Aramis Ramirez, they needed to sign a "lower" free agent before they could go for Reyes/Wilson/Pujols/Fielder. They needed to prove to the other players that they were serious and they had the money to give. However, they're going to have to make some choices namely:

Reyes + Buehrle or Pujols/Fielder + a low cost third basemen or Wilson + Aramis Ramirez. I know these aren't all the combinations but we know Wilson wants 100 mil and probably 5-6 years, so thats like 18-20 mil/year, pujols is going to get at least 25/year, fielder too, buehrle will probably get 4 years/60+ mil, Ramirez will get like 3 years/45 mil + bonuses, and reyes will get like 5/90 or more. So basically, the Marlins cannot have EVERYBODY. They also can't have both Pujols/Fielder, Reyes/Ramirez, or Wilson/Buehrle.

My prediction? They make a splash and land Reyes and Buehrle, even though supposedly they're getting nowhere with Reyes and are only bidding against the Mets. I don't think they're going to get Pujols, and I also don't think they'll get Fielder, since most people don't trust his body holding up and he'll need to DH more than Pujols will (even though he's younger).

I am/was really hoping that the Yankees would sign Buerle or even Wilson. They NEED stability in their rotation! So they resign Freddy Garcia instead...

The Yankees realized that they needed to get younger and fast last year. They didn't trade any of their prospects for "win now" players at the deadline and did not land any huge free agent signings last offseason. Also, the new CBA messed around with the luxary tax limit, and one of these signings would surely cost the Yanks more than what they are already paying now. They are also regretting the AJ Burnett deal and don't want to overpay someone who will be a long term disaster.

So for them to sign Buerle or Wilson to long term high money deals, they would have to be crazy. I do think that moves for a guy like Roy Oswalt, Hiroki Kuroda, or Paul Maholm are going to be looked at for a one or two year contract. Also, a trade for a guy like Wandy, Garza, or Gio Gonzalez will be seriously considered.

Marlins supposedly signed Reyes for 6 years, 106 mil, with a 22 mil option for a seventh (5 mil buyout). Also supposedly they might sign Pujols if he leaves StL?? That would be fearsome: Reyes/Stanton/Morrison/Pujols/Ramirez is a great lineup, plus they have Josh Johnson/Anibal Sanchez/Ricky Nolasco as a very solid rotation.

Marlins agree to a contract with Jose Reyes. $106 million over 6 years. All of my friends who are Mets fans are bitching on facebook about it already.

Edit: 35 seconds. Damn you tennisace.

Man, if Pujols signs with Miami... I'll be impressed by their go get em attitude, but I'm just not sure if they have all the financial ability to build a team with this much money wrapped up... Overpaying for free agents, especially when you figure their issue stems from their pitching, doesn't seem like a good long run strategy.

On the flipside, Jays made an interesting deal today, getting Sergio Santos' team friendly contract for prospect Nestor Molina. I consider myself a pretty religious follower of the Blue Jays, and I hadn't heard of their prospect that they gave up until doing research. Molina is a prospect that rates in most systems as a 2/3 starter ceiling, with realistic expectation being back end starter to bullpen arm. He apparently has dangerous arm action, which some scouts see as trouble.

In terms of value, I can't really see anything wrong from the gain/loss standpoint of this trade... Molina has more upside, and made a huge jump in 2011 posting GODLY K/BB and K/9 rates in High A, but I just can't expect too much out of him... The White Sox have the potential to easily win this trade if everything works, but there are a lot of "ifs". Good move by AA to get a good reliever with a team friendly contract and understanding that the team has a depth of prospects. Nice to see some GMs don't overprice the bullpen arms.

And on that subject, is it not possible to say that the White Sox could've gotten maybe a bit more value on this trade? With the overvaluing of bullpen arms by GMs all around MLB, it surprises me that they didn't manage to sneak a team out of a top prospect...

Nestor Molina was probably our second best pitching prospect (behind hutch and not counting alvarez as a prospect any more) and I really dislike losing him. You don't see those godly K/BB numbers every day.

I think AA made this move hoping that santos still hasn't reached his potential, since his xFIP was among the best for pitchers with 60IP and above.

I don't hate the trade, but our farm is getting shorter on pitching by the day with stewart and molina gone and drabek sucking, and given our ostensible propensity to not sign big name free agents, I am worried about how this team is going to improve. I would have liked to see molina as a part of a bigger package for a big name starter.

Supposedly they're out on Pujols now, but somewhat in on Fielder. If they end up signing Fielder then they can trade Hanley Ramirez + Gaby Sanchez for more pitching/prospects. At the very least they're trading Ramirez, he apparently doesn't want to move and as we all know he's a bit of a diva. I can see the fish trading Ramirez + Coughlin to say the A's for Gio Gonzalez + middling prospect/infield backup.

Supposedly the Angels have signed Pujols AND C.J Wilson. Suddenly a massive power shift has taken place in the AL West.

>gone for a week
>Marlins outbid (well, everyone did) a New York team for a star shortstop, add more payroll than they've spent cumulatively in 5 years
>Pujols signs with someone that isn't the Cardinals

busy week.
