[OVERVIEW]

**Bug**:

Volcarona is the premier option for a setup sweeper on Bug-type teams, with access to Quiver Dance to boost three of its already high stats to higher levels, a great offensive typing, a great movepool that helps it patch up its most of its weaknesses, and reliable recovery in Roost. Volcarona can pick apart Steel-type teams, which are a huge threat to Bug-types, especially if it runs Hidden Power Ground. It also serves as a great wincon against Psychic- and Water-type teams if Bug Buzz and Giga Drain, respectively, are run. Its great base 100 Speed tier allows it to outspeed common Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Hoopa-U, Kyurem-B, Landorus-T, and Togekiss after one boost, and its good special bulk works very well with its Fire typing, allowing it to act as a switch-in to some Fire-type attacks. Volcarona is a very frail Pokemon physically, however. Therefore, it can be easily revenge killed by common priority moves such as Sucker Punch, Extreme Speed, and Aqua Jet; however, Volcarona's ability Flame Body can punish physical attackers that try to revenge kill it. Volcarona suffers from four-moveslot syndrome, as it cannot run all the coverage moves it wants to alongside Quiver Dance. Its huge 4x weakness to Stealth Rock severely hinders its sweeping capabilities.

Moves
========

Quiver Dance boosts Volcarona's Special Attack, Speed, and Special Defense stats to high levels. At +1, Volcarona can outspeed common threats to Bug-type teams such as Choice Scarf Excadrill. Fire Blast is Volcarona's strongest Fire-type STAB move. It can nab many KOs on Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Mega Pidgeot. Alternatively, Fiery Dance can be run for its better accuracy and chance to raise Volcarona's Special Attack stat. However, it misses out on certain KOs, such as Choice Scarf Kyurem-B after Stealth Rock damage, at +1. Bug Buzz is Volcarona's strong secondary STAB move, which is more reliable than Fire Blast due to its better accuracy and PP. It allows Volcarona to act as a wincon against Psychic- and Dark-type teams, particularly hitting threats such as Victini hard. Giga Drain is a coverage move that can be used to hit Water- and Rock-types, particularly Keldeo and Mega Diancie, hard. It also gives Volcarona some form of recovery, which this set lacks. Hidden Power Ground allows Volcarona to hit Heatran, which is a huge threat to Bug-type teams. It also gives it nice coverage against Fire-type teams.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Special Attack is used in order to maximize Volcarona's damage output. Maximum Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow it to outspeed threats such as Choice Scarf Kyurem-B, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Choice Scarf Excadrill, and Mega Sharpedo while also Speed tying with Choice Scarf Victini after one boost. Flame Body allows Volcarona to punish physical attackers, priority users in particular, such as Dragonite, Mega Medicham, Azumarill, and Bisharp, with a chance to burn them. Lum Berry gives Volcarona a free turn of setup against Pokemon that would try to status it such as Jirachi and Slowbro. Life Orb can also be run to allow Volcarona to hit much harder, being able to KO Pokemon like Zapdos with Fire Blast at +1 after Stealth Rock damage, at the cost of becoming weak to status.

Usage Tips
========

Entry hazard control is key when using Volcarona, especially due to the lack of Roost on this set, hindering its ability to set up. It's best to start setting up with Volcarona mid- or late-game, when its checks have been weakened, because its lack of recovery only allows one chance to attempt a sweep; however, setting up early-game can be considered in some situations, as Volcarona can boost its power up to wallbreaking levels, which helps take out checks earlier. Volcarona's great Special Attack can be used early-game to weaken its checks before actually setting up. Because of Volcarona's bad defenses, it is generally better to bring it in after a fallen teammate rather than directly switching it into an attack. Volcarona can take advantage of defensive Pokemon like Mew and Mega Latias, which do nothing to it, and proceed to set up on them. Lum Berry should be preserved until it is time for Volcarona to sweep. While Lum Berry does cleanse status once, Volcarona needs to be able to take out its foe before it gets the chance to permanently cripple Volcarona, as Pokemon such as Zapdos and Lanturn can status it twice.

Team Options
========

Armaldo is a great partner to Volcarona thanks to its ability to get rid of Stealth Rock from the field with Rapid Spin as well as set Stealth Rock itself, increasing Volcarona's offensive pressure. The Assault Vest variant can check threats such as Mega Charizard Y, as it can take a hit and OHKO with Stone Edge. Forretress is also a great partner to Volcarona, being able to get rid of entry hazards like Stealth Rock with Rapid Spin while also acting as a great switch-in to physical moves that threaten Volcarona like Stone Edge. It can set entry hazards such as Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes, which can help turn certain 2HKOs into OHKOs. Forretress can also safely bring in Volcarona with a slow Volt Switch, giving it an easier time setting up. Shuckle also deserves a mention, as it has a wide range of support moves like Toxic, Encore, and Knock Off, as well as the ability to compress the roles of a Stealth Rock setter and a Sticky Web setter in one Pokemon. Mega Heracross has great offensive synergy with Volcarona, as they can both weaken each other's checks. Volcarona can beat Pokemon such as Doublade, while Mega Heracross can break through Pokemon like Chansey, which would otherwise wall Volcarona. Regular Heracross, too, can check Pokemon such as Heatran, allowing Volcarona to freely run Giga Drain over Hidden Power Ground. Mega Pinsir appreciates Volcarona's ability to break its checks such as Skarmory, Doublade, and Hippowdon, allowing it to set up and clean late-game more easily. Mega Pinsir can also outspeed and OHKO Mega Charizard Y, which walls Volcarona. Yanmega is a nice partner to Volcarona, as, together, they can share coverage moves such as Giga Drain and Bug Buzz and can free each other's moveslots. Galvantula can pressure the opposing side with Sticky Web, allowing Volcarona to outspeed and Speed tie with certain Choice Scarf Pokemon that would normally be used to check it like Choice Scarf Victini. Galvantula can also find opportunities to bring in Volcarona with Volt Switch, allowing it to set up more easily. Both regular and Mega Scizor can pivot into a plethora of physical attacks that threaten Volcarona and begin to set up. Their ability to clean up Rock-type teams is invaluable to Volcarona. Scizor can also find opportunities to bring Volcarona in with U-turn. In return, Scizor appreciates Volcarona's ability to beat its checks like Skarmory and Hippowdon, which would otherwise wall it.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Quiver Dance boosts Volcarona's Special Attack, Speed, and Special Defense to high levels. Fiery Dance is the STAB move of choice, giving Volcarona a good chance to raise its Special Attack stat whenever it's used. Roost keeps Volcarona healthy and somewhat mitigates Stealth Rock damage. The last slot is generally coverage for what the team needs. Bug Buzz is a strong secondary STAB move that allows Volcarona to check Psychic- and Dark-types while also being able to hit Dragon-type Pokemon. Giga Drain can be run to hit Water-types, especially bulky Water / Ground Pokemon like Swampert and Gastrodon, which could otherwise phaze Volcarona with Roar or status it with Toxic. Alternatively, Hidden Power Ground can be used to deal with Heatran, but its damage output is quite underwhelming, and it is useless in most other matchups.

Set Details
========
248 EVs in HP maximize Volcarona's bulk and allow it to switch into Stealth Rock twice. 104 EVs in Speed with a Timid nature let it outspeed maximum Speed Mega Gyarados and other threats such as Togekiss and Hoopa-U. The rest of the EVs are put in Defense, allowing Volcarona to take physical hits much better, such as Aqua Jet from Choice Band Azumarill and V-create from Choice Scarf Victini. Flame Body is the ability of choice, which can punish physical attackers with a decent chance to burn. Leftovers is the preferred item, which gives Volcarona passive recovery. An alternative EV spread of 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe with a Timid nature can be run to outspeed base 70s such as Breloom and Bisharp while retaining more bulk.

Usage Tips
========

Entry hazard control is essential when using Volcarona. Its 4x weakness to Stealth Rock is no joke, hindering its ability to switch into weak attacks and its setup sweeping capabilities. Avoid status conditions such as poison and paralysis, which would cripple Volcarona and ruin its sweep. Due to the bulky nature of this set, Volcarona would usually need more than one boost to become a real threat. Therefore, it is recommended that Volcarona set up mid- to late-game when its checks have been weakened. The added bulk along with access to recovery in Roost allows Volcarona to set up on a plethora of Pokemon such as Magnezone and Rock Slide-less Landorus. Volcarona should take care of its health with Roost if it gets used early-game. It usually needs to be able to take at least one hit before it sets up and can start walling special attackers. Even with the extra bulk, it is still recommended to bring in Volcarona safely through a pivot or a fallen teammate.

Team Options
========

Forretress is a great switch-in to Rock-type moves that threaten Volcarona while also being able to get rid of entry hazards. Forretress can also set entry hazards of its own, such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, and Toxic Spikes, letting Volcarona's checks be slowly whittled. Armaldo can also support Volcarona through hazard control. Assault Vest Armaldo is a great defensive complement to Volcarona, being able to check Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y. Yanmega is a great partner to Volcarona, as it can run a variety of coverage moves that this set lacks, such as Air Slash, Hidden Power Ice, and Ancient Power, while also being able to weaken Volcarona's checks. Mega Heracross can easily break through stall or defensively oriented teams that trouble Volcarona. It can also break through Volcarona's checks such as Zapdos, Chansey, Heatran, and Tyranitar. Regular Heracross can also deal with Volcarona's defensive checks such as Chansey, Tyranitar, and Heatran. Mega Scizor is a great complement to Volcarona in being able to switch into most Rock-type Pokemon and threaten them out with Bullet Punch. It can also find opportunities to safely bring in Volcarona with U-turn. Regular Scizor is also a good partner in being able to check the same Pokemon that Mega Scizor does but also freeing up a Mega slot. Mega Pinsir assists Volcarona in being able to beat Fighting-types, revenge kill threats with Quick Attack, and deal with Heatran, Chansey, and Tyranitar thanks to its access to Close Combat. Conversely, Mega Pinsir enjoys having Volcarona to deal with Pokemon like Doublade and Skarmory, which otherwise wall it, allowing it to clean up late-game more easily. Having both a special and a physical setup sweeper, such as Volcarona and Mega Scizor or Mega Pinsir, can put tremendous pressure on the opposing side. Galvantula's access to Sticky Web helps Volcarona a lot due to its lower Speed, allowing it to run the bulky spread freely.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

**Bug**:

Focus Sash can be run to guarantee a Quiver Dance boost; however, it requires very reliable entry hazard control, which Bug-type teams lack. Hidden Power Ice is an interesting coverage option that can allow Volcarona to lure in and KO Pokemon like defensive Landorus-T and Dragonite, which would otherwise take at least one hit from a +1 Volcarona and retaliate with a strong physical attack. Sitrus Berry can be run as a possible one-time healing option on the offensive set.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bug**:

**Stealth Rock**: Volcarona's 4x weakness to Stealth Rock severely hinders its offensive capabilities, making it more easily revenge killed by common priority moves.

**Chansey**: Chansey can easily wall a boosted Volcarona and can proceed to cripple it with Thunder Wave or Toxic while repeatedly using Soft-Boiled.

**Heatran**: All variants of Heatran, whether an offensive set with Stone Edge or a defensive set with Toxic, can wall all Volcarona sets that lack Hidden Power Ground.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster threats such as Choice Scarf Victini, Choice Scarf Terrakion, and Swift Swim Kingdra can easily revenge kill a Volcarona at +1. Priority users such as Bisharp, Dragonite, and Mega Pinsir can also revenge kill Volcarona, but only after prior damage. Azumarill does not require any chip damage to OHKO offensive Volcarona with Aqua Jet. However, the defensive set does not fear Bisharp.

**Special Walls**: Most special walls, like Chansey, Zapdos, and Lanturn, can easily tank Volcarona's attacks and retaliate with status.

**Status**: Both offensive and defensive variants of Volcarona are very weak to status, even with the former having a Lum Berry. Thunder Wave can permanently put a stop to its sweep, and Toxic decreases its already poor longevity by putting it on a timer.

**Rock-types**: Rock-type Pokemon like Cradily and Tyranitar can easily take a Giga Drain, due to lack of STAB, and can OHKO back with a Rock-type STAB move. If Volcarona lacks Giga Drain, Pokemon like Mega Diancie, Rhyperior, and even Omastar can check it.

**Water-types**: Volcarona generally needs to get to +2 in order to check Water-type Pokemon. This makes Pokemon like Manaphy, Volcanion, and Tentacruel great checks to it.

Overview:
- Explain why Volcarona is such a valuable setup sweeper. You say it's the "premier" setup sweeper but don't explain why. This implies it's even more useful than Mega Scizor and Mega Pinsir, so you should definitely give reasons beyond just its access to Quiver Dance.
- I would make it clear that Volcarona is a fantastic Steel check regardless of whether it has Hidden Power Ground or not. It is almost unstoppable with it, of course, but even without it, once Heatran is taken out, Volcarona can very easily sweep.
- Definitely mention that its Fire typing works very well with its good special bulk to make it a good switch-in to some Fire-type attacks.
- Mention that four-moveslot syndrome is a huge, HUGE problem for Volcarona. It just can't run all the coverage moves it so badly wants.

Offensive Quiver Dance:
Set:
- I'm still not really that happy with the slashing here. I think Giga Drain is not strictly better than Bug Buzz, as implied by the current slashing. Giga Drain is basically just for against Water, however, balance Water has a lot of trouble with Bug anyway because Mega Pinsir is such a big problem for them. Stall Water can still just wall this with Sap Sipper Azumarill. Swift Swim Water doesn't care about it either because Kingdra outspeeds a +1 Volcarona.
- I also want it to be clear that you can viably use any combination of the three moves. All of {BB + HPG / BB + GD / HPG + GD} can be used.
- Thus, I want to try this slashing:

name: Offensive Quiver Dance
move 1: Quiver Dance
move 2: Fire Blast / Fiery Dance
move 3: Bug Buzz / Hidden Power Ground
move 4: Giga Drain / Hidden Power Ground
item: Lum Berry
ability: Flame Body
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

- I think this first makes it clear that all three combinations are viable and then it also puts Bug Buzz above Giga Drain without implying that Hidden Power Ground cannot replace Bug Buzz. Thoughts?

Moves:
- Don't need to explain what it outspeeds at +1 in such detail. You can just say that Quiver Dance boosts its stats to allow it to sweep. If you really want to specify, you can use Choice Scarf Excadrill.
- Regarding Fire Blast: "It can nab many KOs on Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Mega ." you forgot to write the name of the Pokemon.
- Instead of Choice Scarf Togekiss, I would put that Fiery Dance cannot 2HKO Zapdos at +1. This includes even if Fiery Dance gets the 50% to boost.
- Note that Bug Buzz is a more reliable STAB attack than Fire Blast. The specific Psychic-type you need to mention is Victini, which takes a significant amount.
- Giga Drain is for coverage, the healing is just nice to have. +1 Giga Drain can KO Keldeo after very minor damage and is a generally good coverage move for taking out Rock-types such as Mega Diancie.

Set Details:
- You said Jolly nature. Volcarona is Timid.
- I would mention that Sharpedo is outsped. (Relevance is that Sharpedo needs a double Protect and must avoid being Quiver Danced on to beat Volcarona)
- Lanturn is a pretty bad example for Lum Berry. It can only prevent one status, and Lanturn cannot be easily taken out: it can survive a +2 Giga Drain, for example. So it's not actually possible for Volcarona to set up on Lanturn. Instead, maybe use Slowbro?
- Mention Life Orb here instead of in Other Options. It's really not that bad at all.

Usage Tips:
- Take advantage of Volcarona's great damage even without boosts to wear down checks early as well. That 135 Special Attack is nothing to scoff at.
- Although this set usually only has one shot at a sweep, it should still be aware that boosting early-game can bring its power up to wallbreaking levels, which can help it take out checks early.
- I wouldn't use Alomomola as an example. Volcarona cannot 2HKO at +0 or even OHKO at +2, meaning Alomomola has enough time to Toxic twice, once to use the Lum Berry and a second time to cripple Volcarona. An example you could use would probably be like Mega Latias.
- Try to preserve the Lum Berry as much as possible. While it does cleanse a status one time, Volcarona needs to be able to take out its foe before it gets the chance to permanently cripple Volcarona. As a result, Volcarona should not switch into any Pokemon that can use a relevant status move on it.

Team Options:
- I'd reword the AV thing. Say that the AV set can take a hit from Mega Charizard Y and OHKO back with Stone Edge.
- Mega Heracross can 2HKO Skarmory with Close Combat, so just leave it at Doublade.
- Mega Pinsir also helps by outspeeding and OHKO Mega Charizard Y, which walls Volcarona.
- "...which would otherwise wall it" would probably do better because Choice Band Scizor is a set.

Bulky Quiver Dance:
Set:
- I'd honestly not even slash Hidden Power Ground on this set. It's too specific for this set, which can only run one coverage move. You get walled by Heatran but there's really not much you can do about that. You get walled by so much more if you don't run Giga Drain or Bug Buzz.
- Bug Buzz is generally better coverage too for the single slot.

name: Bulky Quiver Dance
move 1: Quiver Dance
move 2: Fiery Dance
move 3: Roost
move 4: Bug Buzz / Giga Drain
item: Leftovers
ability: Flame Body
nature: Timid
evs:248 HP / 156 Def / 104 Spe

Moves:
- The fourth option is for coverage, so Bug Buzz hitting Psychic- and Dark-types is not nearly as important. Bug Buzz is a good coverage move for hitting Dragon-types.
- Giga Drain is not strong enough anymore to be first slash, as it can't beat Keldeo, Terrakion, or Mega Diancie. Being able to stop Gastrodon from Toxic / Swampert from Roar is notable though, so it stays slashed at least.

Set Details:
- Mention that an alternative spread of 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe can be used with a Timid nature for more bulk while still outspeeding Breloom.

Usage Tips:
- How does the added physical bulk improve its odds vs. Landorus and Magnezone? Just say its added bulk.
- The real reason it can set up on those Pokemon now is that it has Roost. Now that it can set up Quiver Dances and then Roost off taken damage, it can actually wall these Pokemon.
- Say that Volcarona should take care to keep its health topped off with Roost if it gets used early-game. It usually needs to be able to take at least one hit before it sets up and can start walling special attackers.

Team Options:
Be aware that this set generally doesn't need the same help that the first set does. I shouldn't be seeing the reasons. This set needs more help breaking down defensive Pokemon, while it is much better at taking on special attackers. Have your Team Options reflect this.
- Yanmega is also a decent attacker that can weaken Volcarona's checks before it attempts to sweep.
- Mega Pinsir is good for being able to break walls that Volcarona cannot such as Chansey.

Other Options:
- I'd never even heard of Rest before and I hope I never do again. Remove it, it's a transcendent level of awful.
- You can list Sitrus Berry as a possible one-time healing option for the offensive set.
- I'd move Life Orb to mentioned in the offensive set.

Checks and Counters:
- Note that all of the priority examples require prior damage except for Choice Band Azumarill. The defensive set also doesn't fear Bisharp or Dragonite.
- Also, Choice Scarf Latios completely lacks damage and can't beat the defensive set either. I'd replace it with something like Swift Swim Kingdra.
- I'd mention special walls in general. They can easily tank Volcarona's attacks and retaliate with status. Examples could include Lanturn and Zapdos.
- You have to include Heatran. It walls every Volcarona that doesn't have Hidden Power Ground. Whether it's offensive with Stone Edge or defensive with Toxic, all Heatran can counter those Volcarona.
- You should generally mention Rock-types. They don't take that much even from Giga Drain, due to the lack of STAB, and can OHKO back with their own STAB attacks. You can use Cradily for this. If Volcarona lacks Giga Drain, even the likes of Rhyperior, Mega Diancie, and Omastar can easily check Volcarona.
- Water-types could be decent checks. Volcarona really needs 2 boosts to beat most of them even if it has Giga Drain, so Pokemon such as Manaphy, Volcanion, and Tentacruel are great checks.

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Point out that it gets reliable recovery in Roost.
  • Mention how its ability Flame Body can punish physical attackers.
Offensive Quiver Dance:

Moves
  • Jirachi and Zapdos can't really touch Lum Berry Volcarona so either find better examples or just stick with Kyurem-B.
Usage Tips
  • It has access to recovery, it's just nothing running it on that specific set. Be more clear about this.
Team Options
  • Regular Heracross is much more common than Mega Heracross so give that a mention too. Also point out how Heracross checks Heatran, allowing Volcarona to run Giga Drain over HP Ground.
Bulky Quiver Dance:

[SET]
  • Honestly every bulky variant of Volcarona I've seen runs Hidden Power Ground, or at least Giga Drain. I don't think it needs Bug Buzz on a Bug-type team. So in my opinion change the fourth slot to Hidden Power Ground / Giga Drain.

Team Options
  • Same thing as the other set.

After implementations QC 2/3.

Thank you! Implemented everything except hp ground as a slash. We talked it over and decided to mention it in moves. Ready for the next QC!

...at +1 after Stealth Rock damage, at the cost of its longevity. You run LO at the cost of being weak to status moves, not longevity.
Usage Tips
You need to expand upon these ideas: "Lum Berry should be preserved as much as possible. While it does cleanse status once, Volcarona needs to be able to take out its foe before it gets the chance to permanently cripple Volcarona."

Lum Berry should be preserved until it is time for Volcarona to sweep.
Give 1-2 examples of things that can status twice.

OO
Focus Sash can be run to guarantee a Quiver Dance boost; however, it requires very reliable hazard control which Bug-type teams... (you forgot the rest).

I disagree with Eien on how bad a ChestoResto set actually is, but it isn't a big deal. It was originally there b/c we discussed a sparse OO section on PS the other day. You have enough stuff in OO without mentioning a Rest set now. Although the argument can be made Sitrus is equally strange, yet it does see some usage... :/

It is similar to Lum in that you set up on status inducers, yet generally worse because you lose a coverage option against balance/offense and risk para hax (I assume that is what Eien meant by "transcendently awful" when compared to Lum). However, it has added utility against passive teams that would normally status and stall out other sets (Fat Normal, Stall Flying, Stall Water w/o Perish Azu, etc.). Most Bug teams will have Mega-Hera or Mega-Pinsir to deal with those teams and prefer the sweeping capabilities of another coverage move or the utility of a more defensive variant for Volcarona.

However, a Bug team with Mega-Scizor can struggle to break some of the bulkier teams in the Monotype meta. In that case, sacrificing a coverage option on Volcy to cover that weakness becomes something that is worth considering—Mega-Scizor does amazing vs. many builds Volcy becomes less viable against. Plus, what else is going to stall/wall break on such a Bug team? Maybe Hera? Specs Yanmega is completely walled by max HP Toge and Chansey, and struggles to break Zappy. No one considers Rest Volcy because 90% of Bug teams run Mega-Pinsir or Mega-Hera, not because it is utterly useless in all situations.

Moves
========
Quiver Dance boosts Volcarona's Special Attack, Speed, (AC) and Special Defense stats to high levels. At +1, it Volcarona can outspeed common threats to Bug-type teams such as Choice Scarf Excadrill. Fire Blast is Volcarona's strongest Fire-type STAB move. It can nab many KOs on Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Mega Pidgeot. However, it misses out on certain KOs, such as Choice Scarf Kyurem-B after Stealth Rock damage, at +1. Bug Buzz is Volcarona's strong secondary STAB move, (AC) which is more reliable than Fire Blast due to its better accuracy and PP. It allows Volcarona to act as a wincon against Psychic- and Dark-type teams, particularly hitting threats such as Victini hard. Giga Drain is a coverage move which that can be used to hit Water- and Rock-types, particularly Keldeo and Mega Diancie, hard. It also gives Volcarona some form of recovery, (AC) which this set lacks. Hidden Power Ground allows Volcarona to hit Heatran, which is a huge threat to Bug-type teams. It also gives it nice coverage against Fire-type teams.

Set Details
========
Maximum investments are made in Special Attack is used in order to maximise maximize Volcarona's damage output. Maximum Speed EVs with a Timid nature allows allow it to outspeed threats such as Choice Scarf Kyurem-B, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Choice Scarf Excadrill, and Mega Sharpedo, (RC) while also Speed tying with Choice Scarf Victini after one boost. Flame Body is the ability of choice, (AC) which allows Volcarona to punish physical attackers, priority users in particular, such as Dragonite, Mega Medicham, Azumarill, (AC) and Bisharp with a chance to burn them. Lum Berry gives Volcarona a free turn of set up setup against Pokemon that would try to status it such as Jirachi and Slowbro. Life Orb can also be run to allow Volcarona to hit much harder, being able to KO Pokemon like Zapdos with Fire Blast at +1 after Stealth Rock damage, at the cost of becoming weak to status.

Usage Tips
========
Entry hazard control is key when using Volcarona, especially due to the lack of a Roost on this set, hindering its ability to setup set up. It's best to start setting up with Volcarona mid- or late-game, when its checks have been weakened, because of the its lack of recovery it only allows gets one chance to attempt a sweep; however, setting up early-game can be considered in some situations, (AC) as it Volcarona can boost its power up to wallbreaking levels, which helps take out checks earlier. Volcarona's great Special Attack can be used early-game to weaken its checks before actually setting up. With Because of Volcarona's (apo.) frail defenses, it is generally better to bring it in after a fallen teammate rather than directly switching it into an attack. Volcarona can take advantage of defensive Pokemon like Mew and Mega Latias, which do nothing to it, and proceed to set up on them. While it Lum Berry does cleanse status once, Volcarona needs to be able to take out its foe before it gets the chance to permanently cripple Volcarona, as Pokemon such as Zapdos and Lanturn can status it twice.

Armaldo is a great partner to Volcarona thanks to its ability to get rid of Stealth Rock from the field with Rapid Spin as well as set them Stealth Rock itself, increasing Volcarona's (apo.) offensive pressure. The Assault Vest variant can check threats such as Mega Charizard Y, as it can take a hit and OHKO with Stone Edge. Forretress is also a great partner to Volcarona, being able to get rid of entry hazards like Stealth Rock with Rapid Spin, (RC) while also acting as a great switch-in to physical moves that threaten Volcarona like Stone Edge. It can set entry hazards like such as Stealth Rock, Spikes, (AC) and Toxic Spikes, which can help turn certain 2HKOs into OHKOs. Forretress can also safely bring in Volcarona with a slow Volt Switch, giving it an easier time setting up. Shuckle also deserves a mention, (AC) as it has a wide range of support moves like Toxic, Encore, and Knock Off, as well as the ability to compress the roles of a Stealth Rock setter and a Sticky Web setter in one slot Pokemon. (space) Mega Heracross has great offensive synergy with Volcarona, as they can both weaken each other's (apo.) checks. Volcarona can beat Pokemon such as Doublade, while Mega Heracross can break through Pokemon like Chansey, (AC) which would otherwise wall Volcarona. Regular Heracross, too, can check Pokemon such as Heatran, allowing Volcarona to freely run Giga Drain over Hidden Power Ground. Mega Pinsir appreciates Volcarona's ability to break its checks such as Skarmory, Doublade, (AC) and Hippowdon, allowing it to set up and clean late-game more easily. Mega Pinsir can also outspeed and OHKO Mega Charizard Y, which walls Volcarona. Yanmega is a nice partner to Volcarona, (AC) as, together, they can share coverage moves such as Giga Drain and Bug Buzz and can free each others' other's moveslots. Galvantula can pressure the opposing side with Sticky Web, allowing it Volcarona to outspeed and Speed tie with certain Choice Scarf Pokemon that would normally be used to check it like Choice Scarf Victini. Galvantula can also find oppurtunities opportunities to bring in Volcarona with Volt Switch, allowing it to set up more easily. Both, (RC) regular and Mega Scizor can pivot into a plethora of physical attacks that threaten Volcarona and begin to set up. Its Their ability to clean up Rock-type teams is invaluable to Volcarona. Scizor can also find oppurtunities opportunities to bring Volcarona in with U-turn. In return, Scizor appreciates Volcarona's ability to beat its checks like Skarmory and Hippowdon, which would otherwise wall it.

Moves
========
Quiver Dance boosts Volcarona's Special Attack, Speed, (AC) and Special Defense to high levels. Fiery Dance is the STAB move of choice, which also gives giving Volcarona a good chance to raise its Special Attack stat whenever it's used. Roost keeps Volcarona healthy and somewhat mitigates Stealth Rock damage. The last slot is generally coverage for what the team needs. Bug Buzz is a strong secondary STAB move that allows Volcarona to check Psychic- and Dark-types, (RC) while also being able to hit Dragon-type Pokemon. Giga Drain can be run to hit Water-types, especially bulky Water / Grounds Pokemon like Swampert and Gastrodon, (AC) which could otherwise phaze it Volcarona with Roar or status it with Toxic. Alternatively, Hidden Power Ground can be used to deal with Heatran, but its damage output is quite underwhelming and is useless in most other matchups.

Set Details
========
248 EVs in HP are given is to maximize Volcarona's (apo.) bulk and allow it to switch into Stealth Rock twice. 104 EVs in Speed with a Timid nature lets it outspeed maximum Speed Mega Gyarados, (RC) and other threats such as Togekiss and Hoopa-U. The rest of the EVs are put in Defense, (AC) allowing Volcarona to take physical hits much better, such as Aqua Jet from Choice Band Azumarill and V-Create from Choice Scarf Victini. Flame Body is the ability of choice, (AC) which can punish physical attackers with a decent chance to burn. Leftovers is the preferred item, (AC) which gives Volcarona passive recovery. An alternative EV spread of 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe with a Timid nature can be run to outspeed base 70's 70s such as Breloom and Bisharp, (RC) while retaining more bulk.

Usage Tips
========
Entry hazard control is essential when using Volcarona. Its 4x weakness to Stealth Rock is no joke, hindering its ability to switch into weak attacks and its setup-sweeping (hyphen) capabilities. Avoid status conditions like such as toxic poison and paralysis, (AC) which would otherwise cripple Volcarona and ruin its sweep. Due to the bulky nature of this set, Volcarona would usually need more than one boost to become a real threat. Therefore, it is recommended that Volcarona sets up mid- to late-game when its checks have been weakened. The added bulk along with access to recovery in Roost allows Volcarona to set up on a plethora of Pokemon such as Magnezone and Rock Slide-less Landorus. Volcarona should take care to keep of its health topped off with Roost if it gets used early-game. It usually needs to be able to take at least one hit before it sets up and can start walling special attackers. Even with the extra bulk, it is still recommended to bring in Volcarona safely through a pivot or a fallen teammate.

Team Options
========
Forretress is a great switch-in to Rock-type moves that threaten Volcarona, (RC) while also being able to get rid of entry hazards. Forretress can also set entry hazards such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, (AC) and Toxic Spikes, letting Volcarona's (apo.) checks be slowly whittled. Armaldo can also support Volcarona through hazard control. Assault Vest Armaldo is a great defensive complement to Volcarona, being able to check Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y. Yanmega is a great partner to Volcarona, (AC) as it can run a variety of coverage moves which that this set lacks, such as Air Slash, Hidden Power Ice, and Ancient Power, while also being able to weaken Volcarona's checks. Mega Heracross is an excellent partner to Volcarona, (AC) as it can easily break through stall or defensively oriented teams which that trouble Volcarona. It can also break through Volcarona's checks such as Zapdos, Chansey, Heatran, (AC) and Tyranitar. Regular Heracross can also deal with Volcarona's defensive checks such as Chansey, Tyranitar, and Heatran. Mega Scizor is a great complement to Volcarona in being able to switch into most Rock-type Pokemon and threaten them out with Bullet Punch. It can also find oppurtunities opportunities to safely bring in Volcarona with U-turn. Regular Scizor is also a good partner in being able to check the same Pokemon that Mega Scizor does, (RC) but also freeing up a Mega slot. Mega Pinsir assists Volcarona in being able to beat Fighting-types, revenge kill threats with Quick Attack, and can deal with Heatran, Chansey, and Tyranitar thanks to its access to Close Combat. Mega Pinsir enjoys having Volcarona to deal with Pokemon like Doublade and Skarmory, (AC) which otherwise wall it, allowing it to clean up late-game easier. Having both, (RC) a special and a physical setup sweeper, such as Mega Scizor or Mega Pinsir, (where's the special attacker) can put tremendous pressure on the opposing side. Galvantula's access to Sticky Web helps Volcarona a lot due to its slower Speed, allowing it to run the bulky spread freely.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

**Bug**:
Focus Sash can be run to guarantee a Quiver Dance boost; however, it requires very reliable entry hazard control, (AC) which Bug-type teams lack. Hidden Power Ice is an interesting coverage option which that can lure in and KO Pokemon like defensive Landorus-T and Dragonite, which would otherwise take atleast at least one hit from a +1 Volcarona and retaliate with a strong physical attack. Sitrus Berry can be run as a possible one-time healing option on the offensive set.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bug**:

**Stealth Rock**: Volcarona's 4x weakness to Stealth Rock severely hinders its offensive capabilities, allowing it to be making it more easily revenge killed by common priority moves.

**Chansey**: Chansey can easily wall a boosted Volcarona, (RC) and can proceed to cripple it with Thunder Wave or Toxic, (RC) while repeatedly using Soft Boiled.

**Heatran**: All variants of Heatran, whether an offensive set with Stone Edge or a defensive set with Toxic, can wall all Volcarona sets which that lack Hidden Power Ground.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster threats such as Choice Scarf Victini, Choice Scarf Terrakion, (AC) and Swift Swim Kingdra can easily revenge kill a Volcarona at +1. Priority users such as Bisharp, Dragonite, (AC) and Mega Pinsir can also revenge kill Volcarona, but only after prior damage. Azumarill does not require any chip damage to OHKO offensive Volcarona with Aqua Jet, (RC) . (period) and However, the defensive set does not fear Bisharp.

**Special Walls**: Most special walls, like Chansey, Zapdos, (AC) and Lanturn, can easily tank Volcarona's attacks, (RC) and retaliate with status. (period)

**Status**: Both(remove space), (RC) offensive and defensive variants of Volcarona are very weak to status, even with the former having a Lum Berry.

If Volcarona lacks Giga Drain, Pokemon like Mega Diancie, Rhyperior, (AC) and even Omastar can check it.

**Water-types**: Volcarona generally needs to get to +2 in order to check Water-type Pokemon. This makes Pokemon like Manaphy, Volcanion, (AC) and Tentacruel great checks to it.

**Bug**:
Volcarona is the premier option for a setup sweeper on Bug-type teams, with access to Quiver Dance, which boosts 3 of its already high stats to higher levels, a great offensive typing, a great movepool, (AC) which helps it patch up its most of its weaknesses, and reliable recovery in Roost. Volcarona can pick apart Steel-type teams, which are a huge threat to Bug-types, especially if it runs Hidden Power Ground. It also serves as a great wincon against Psychic- and Water-type teams, (RC) if Bug Buzz and Giga Drain are run, (AC) respectively. It has a great base 100 Speed tier, which allows it to outspeed common scarfed Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Hoopa-U, Kyurem-B, Landorus-T, (AC) and Togekiss after one boost. Volcarona's good special bulk works very well with its Fire typing, allowing it to act as a switch-in to some Fire-type attacks. Volcarona is a very frail Pokemon on the physical side defensively, however. It can be easily revenge killed by common priority moves such as Sucker Punch, Extreme Speed, (AC) and Aqua Jet; however, Volcarona's ability Flame Body can punish physical attackers that try to revenge kill it. Volcarona suffers from a four-moveslot syndrome, as it cannot run the all the coverage moves it wants to alongside Quiver Dance. Its huge 4x weakness to Stealth Rock damage severely hinders its sweeping capabilities.

Alternatively, Fiery Dance can be run for its better accuracy and chance to raise Volcarona's Special Attack stat. However, it misses out on certain KOs, such as Choice Scarf Kyurem-B after Stealth Rock damage, at +1.

Lum Berry should be preserved until it is time for Volcarona to sweep.

Moves
========
Alternatively, Hidden Power Ground can be used to deal with Heatran, but its damage output is quite underwhelming, (AC) and it is useless in most other matchups.

Set Details
========
248 EVs in HP is to maximize Volcarona's bulk and allow it to switch into Stealth Rock twice. 104 EVs in Speed with a Timid nature lets let it outspeed maximum Speed Mega Gyarados (RC) and other threats such as Togekiss and Hoopa-U.

Usage Tips
========
Entry hazard control is essential when using Volcarona. Its 4x weakness to Stealth Rock is no joke, hindering its ability to switch into weak attacks and its setup sweeping (RH) capabilities. Avoid status conditions such as poison and paralysis, which would otherwise cripple Volcarona and ruin its sweep. Due to the bulky nature of this set, Volcarona would usually need more than one boost to become a real threat. Therefore, it is recommended that Volcarona sets set up mid- to late-game when its checks have been weakened.

========
Forretress is a great switch-in to Rock-type moves that threaten Volcarona while also being able to get rid of entry hazards. Forretress can also set entry hazards of its own, (AC) such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, and Toxic Spikes, letting Volcarona's checks be slowly whittled. Mega Heracross is an excellent partner to Volcarona, as it (repetitive sentence structure) can easily break through stall or defensively oriented teams that trouble Volcarona. Conversely, (AC) Mega Pinsir enjoys having Volcarona to deal with Pokemon like Doublade and Skarmory, which otherwise wall it, allowing it to clean up late-game easiermore easily. Having both a special and a physical setup sweeper, such as Volcarona and Mega Scizor or Mega Pinsir, can put tremendous pressure on the opposing side. Galvantula's access to Sticky Web helps Volcarona a lot due to its slower lower Speed, allowing it to run the bulky spread freely.

Other Options
=============

===================

**Bug**:

**Stealth Rock**: Volcarona's 4x weakness to Stealth Rock severely hinders its offensive capabilities, making it more easily revenge killed by common priority moves.

**Chansey**: Chansey can easily wall a boosted Volcarona and can proceed to cripple it with Thunder Wave or Toxic (RC) while repeatedly using Soft-Boiled. (AH)

**Status**: Both (RC) offensive and defensive variants of Volcarona are very weak to status, even with the former having a Lum Berry.

[OVERVIEW]

**Bug**:
Volcarona is the premier option for a setup sweeper on Bug-type teams, with access to Quiver Dance, which boosts 3 to boost three of its already high stats to higher levels, a great offensive typing, a great movepool, which that helps it patch up its most of its weaknesses, and reliable recovery in Roost. Volcarona can pick apart Steel-type teams, which are a huge threat to Bug-types, especially if it runs Hidden Power Ground. It also serves as a great wincon against Psychic- and Water-type teams if Bug Buzz and Giga Drain are run, respectively, are run. It has a Its great base 100 Speed tier, which allows it to outspeed common Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Hoopa-U, Kyurem-B, Landorus-T, and Togekiss after one boost, (comma) Volcarona's and its good special bulk works very well with its Fire typing, allowing it to act as a switch-in to some Fire-type attacks. Volcarona is a very frail Pokemon physically on the physical side, however. Therefore, (AC) it can be easily revenge killed by common priority moves such as Sucker Punch, Extreme Speed, and Aqua Jet; however, Volcarona's ability Flame Body can punish physical attackers that try to revenge kill it. Volcarona suffers from four-moveslot syndrome, as it cannot run all the coverage moves it wants to alongside Quiver Dance. Its huge 4x weakness to Stealth Rock severely hinders its sweeping capabilities.

Moves
========

Set Details
========
Maximum investment in Special Attack is used in order to maximize Volcarona's damage output. Maximum Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow it to outspeed threats such as Choice Scarf Kyurem-B, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Choice Scarf Excadrill, and Mega Sharpedo (RC) while also Speed tying with Choice Scarf Victini after one boost. Flame Body is the ability of choice, which allows Volcarona to punish physical attackers, priority users in particular, such as Dragonite, Mega Medicham, Azumarill, and Bisharp, (AC) with a chance to burn them.

Usage Tips
========
Because of Volcarona's frail bad defenses, it is generally better to bring it in after a fallen teammate rather than directly switching it into an attack.

========
