CREAT.jpg

This thread is to allow all monotype players to share cool sets and ideas they have seen or made in the metagame. The idea is to not only increase the usage of unique sets in monotype but also to showcase how less used pokemon can be adapted for the monotype metagame. Below states what it means to have a creative or underrated set within the monotype metagame. Any post that is considered a gimmick will not be tolerated in the thread and deleted.

1. What is a creative moveset?
A) It has not previously been widely used.
B) It successfully pulls off a role, and is not strictly outclassed by other Pokemon in that role.
C) It takes advantage of metagame trends.
D) It has had some success. Post replays / logs to strengthen your case.

2. What is an underrated moveset?
A) It is an existing set that for whatever reason isn't common.
B) Its use is meant to prey on specific facets of the metagame.
C) It might be able to surprise and demolish Pokemon that normally counter the usual sets, but does not become a bad gimmick in order to do so.

3. What constitutes a good post?
1) Have a good description of the set.
2) Having relevant calcs to go along with the post.
3) Why did you use this set over the standard set?
4) Showing replays of the set in action.

4. What are some things that constitute a bad gimmick?
A) Using a Pokemon that has no business being used in Monotype, for the sake of using it (Shedinja / Glaceon).
B) Movesets that are inferior and ineffective compared to existing movesets (e.g. Swords Dance Venusaur), or using an obscure move for the sake of hitting an even more obscure check or counter.
C) Movesets that are utterly impractical or are horribly outclassed by another Pokemon (e.g. Dragon Dance Crawdaunt).
D) A bad gimmick is not limited to the above, though. The moderator team and I will use our best judgment to determine which sets should be deleted
E) If your set has been brought up multiple times and rejected for being a gimmick it will be listed in the Gimmicky/Rejected Sets in the OP

If you have a question about the thread VM me on Smogon and or pm me on Showdown
WIP

Every submission to this thread will be responded to in a wave. If the submission is infact Creative and or Underrated it will be approved, however if it is a common set or unviable I will provide an explanation to why the set was not approved. Please also provide replays and a proper description of what the unique set does whether its the EVs, what it techs with a surprise move, etc.

Defog Corviknight
:corviknight:
Corviknight @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- U-turn
- Defog
- Roost

This is a set I use on Flying because it is especially weak to Stealth Rock. Corviknight, is in my opinion, the best Defogger for Flying teams because of its excellent typing and Pressure. Pressure is great for stalling out opposing Stealth Rock and the Steel typing means you don't have to worry about getting skewed by random Toxics by Stealth Rock setters like Piloswine, Tyranitar, Seismitoad that may carry it. It's pretty easy to get momentum with it too with U-turn because of the defensive typing and bulk, you can switch it in on a bunch of stuff like Ferrothorn, Bisharp, Tyranitar, Excadrill and threaten them or use U-turn to bring another teammate in. Body Press just takes care of a ton of Pokemon that Flying teams hate dealing with, which is why I think it's mandatory. Pokemon like Bisharp, Weavile, Excadrill, Cloyster and Tyranitar are all checked pretty well by Body Press, especially considering the Defense investments. I pair this set with Mantine, which is another Defog user which can Defog on offensive Seismitoad and its bulk and typing lets it check things like Charizard, Choice Specs Keldeo, and Dracovish which Corviknight struggles against. I wouldn't say Defog Corviknight is a creative set, but it's underrated on Flying teams for sure.

Choice Scarf Noivern

Noivern @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- U-turn
- Draco Meteor
- Switcheroo
- Hurricane

This is another set I use on Flying, but I think it's terrible on Dragon because Choice Scarf Dragapult there is strictly better. Basically with Kyurem-B I think this is one of the best checks to it on the type, being able to outspeed and beat it with Draco Meteor pretty nicely, even after a Dragon Dance. Dragon teams historically just suck against super effective coverage, and this is an instance of where it can be easily taken advantage of. The only thing that outspeeds Choice Scarf Noivern on Dragon is Choice Scarf Dragapult, and Choice Scarf Dragapult means it can't really break through Flying's defensive Pokemon, leaving it prone to take advantage of. Furthermore, Infiltrator means you can ignore screens on both of the types Kyurem-B is on, ignoring things like Alolan Ninetales's Aurora Veil and Dragapult/Duraludon's screens when checking a massive threat in Kyurem-B. Switcheroo's pretty nice against anything Noivern can't touch naturally, and locks setup into itself. I use this set with another rather odd Choice Scarf user in Hawlucha with Encore, making it pretty much impossible for Kyurem-B to get to +2 against Flying because of all the pivoting with U-turn and power that pressures it. Choice Scarf Noivern is also nice in other matchups because of its nice Speed and ability to cripple things with Switcheroo. Definitely a nice set in the metagame right now, and if it gets a free turn against Dragon, something's going to faint.

Defensive Cloyster

Cloyster @ Leftovers
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Icicle Spear

Something I used when I wanted to build a Pressure Kyurem team with Substitute, and from prior experience I thought Pressure could work nicely with Spikes and Toxic Spikes spam. I didn't really have room for Rapid Spin on the team either, so instead of using Froslass and Avalugg/Galarian Mr. Mime I just decided to make Cloyster my spinner, since it could stack Spikes/Toxic Spikes very well too. Cloyster's high defense and Water typing is nice for Rapid Spin because its neutral to Steel, meaning it can switch into things like Choice Scarf Jirachi and Excadrill and get it off. Everyone expects Shell Smash on Cloyster so that can be taken advantage of to get up multiple layers of hazards and spin away your own. The main downside is that Cloyster's Special Defense is horrid, and unlike Avalugg, it doesn't have Sturdy, and unlike Galarian Mr. Mime, it's not fast, but t I think it compresses roles pretty well. I'll look for more replays in the morning, and add them if I can find any more good ones.

Stealing Decem's presentation style, don't mind if I do...

Passho Rhyperior

Rhyperior @ Passho Berry
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Fire Punch
- Counter

After losing to good old Scarf Mr. Fish for the 11th time, I decided to switch to this set, which I used on Rock at the very tail end of Gen 7. Considering how Rock has no water inmunity at the moment, Passho Rhyp helps out that weakness by ensuring the team is not swept by Aqua Jets or Fishious Rends while still doing it's main job as a physical check to various threats like Conkeldurr, Hawlucha and most importantly Excadrill and Bisharp. While you could run Smack Down on this set in order to try to annoy Corviknight on Steel, the lack of EV investment into Attack makes it less than ideal in taking it on. This leaves Rock with the unfortunate job of finding a way to check Bulk Up Corviknight with its meager special attackers. As such, presenting...

Choice Specs Tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Choice Specs
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

Rock's special attacking options fall somewhere between awful and Lunatone. While I did try out Lunatone for a good while and had surprising success with it, it failed to stop Bulk Up Corviknight, a deadly threat for Rock. So I looked to the next best option... Which unfortunately is T-tar.
However, Modest Choice Specs Tyranitar actually reaches a decent special stat of 475, which is higher than Lunatone can attest. It's Flamethrower is strong enough to 2HKO Sp. def Corviknight, so I didn't bother with Fire Blast as Pressure stalling was a big concern. The rest of the moves are used for coverage against other types, Dark Pulse is obviously really good against Ghost, since it doesn't care about being burned by Corsola, Ice Beam catches Ground by surprise and Thunderbolt sends Flying packing.

Berry Lead Celebi + Choice Specs Venusaur (Grass)

(Celebi) @ Occa Berry

Grass has a problem beating Fire and setting Stealth Rock safety can be very significant in doing a good bit of damage. Playing around with Grass, I've made some small minor changes and changed my Venusaur to Choice Specs. Occa Berry is useful for forcing Celebi to get Stealth Rock to help Venusaur have a better chance at sweeping Fire. I feel like Appletun belongs more on a Non-Sun Grass variant and getting hazards up is very crucial for Sun-abusers like Shiftry and Venusaur. Of course, Specs Venusaur does not OHKO Torkoal but with Choice Specs you can run Earth Power which does OHKO Torkoal. Once Torkoal is out, of course, you will have to sack a Pokemon to get sun back up and make use of Venusaur again. Celebi's Occa Berry along with its Ground and Psychic coverage allows it to be very effective against Poison. It's kind of weird but I feel like this "core" is another option as compared to "You must get Growth up against a Fire mon to win" which can be practically impossible when Pokemon like Incineroar ignores Whimsicott's Prankster and Darmanitan's Sheer Force + Sun + STAB damage on Flare Blitz.
-2 252 Atk Sheer Force Darmanitan Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Venusaur in Sun: 474-558 (157.4 - 185.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Venusaur Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Torkoal: 362-426 (105.2 - 123.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

RestTalk Obstagoon (Normal)

(Obstagoon) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Defiant
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Bulk Up
- Knock Off
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Weird set, I know right. I have been testing around with Normal and I was not happy with running CurseRest Lax which ONLY runs one Dark ALONG with Obstagoon that does the same. Running Curse Lax is situational in the Fairy Matchup, although its a great special attack absorber, Darkest Lariat is very predictable. So I thought, what if I maximized Obstagoon's SpD and make it a Snorlax 2.0, then give Snorlax coverage moves like Heavy Slam, Earthquake, Outrage, Heat Crash, or Double Edge for coverage. Obstagoon's Defiant Ability helps Obstagoon gain attack from Strength Saps. This ought to be one of the weirdest teams I have created this generation but I feel like Obstagoon RestTalk can be very effective.

AV Incineroar (Dark)

Incineroar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 SpA
Relaxed Nature
- Flamethrower
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Brick Break

The metagame's main thing every team needs to worry about unfortunately is Kyurem-Black. Incineroar's Flamethrower is useful so you won't take unneeded damage from Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs and Recoil from Flare Blitz. Flamethrower is also for Avalugg so you won't be completely walled. Brick Break breaks Screens/Veil and Kyurem-Black's sub and also does a good bit of chip every time it is used. U-Turn gives Incineroar a slow pivot into another Pokemon and hits Appletun effectively.
252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-Black Fusion Bolt vs. 252 HP / 168+ Def Incineroar: 112-132 (28.4 - 33.5%) -- 0.1% chance to 3HKO

Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Adding the occa berry Celebi set. For the specs venusaur set I feel its too niche and with a sun sweeper like that you want the flexibility to change moves to make the most of sun turns, also the fact that running a specs set locks you into a move which can be taken advantage of. I am up to add your AV incineraor since it can still work on offensive dark builds as a sp.def pivot and where ttar is not utility set but I want you to revise the EVs for it since Kyurem-B is now gone. I am not sold on the rest talk Obstagoon set so if you could show me some replays for it in action then I may change my mind.

This is my build. I think that Pyro Ball is pretty redundant for the same reasons you said: I have a team full of fire types. Lum berry is an interesting idea that I hadn’t considered. When do you feel that setting up on Cobalion is important? HJK is 81.3% to OHKO it and with Jolly you’re faster.

To clarify, it’s only ~70 damage against Toxapex at +1. At neutral it does just over 50 and misses out on a 2HKO due to Black Sludge:
+1 252 Atk Libero Cinderace Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 194-230 (63.8 - 75.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery.

Some Pokémon that HJK gets a KO on but P Ball doesn’t: Duraludon, Ushifu (81% chance to OHKO max HP), Terrakion (Zen Headbutt does not), and Kyurem.

I find Cinderace to be especially clutch against Dragon, and more or less single handedly makes it a favorable MU. Cinderace OHKOs Duraludon, Dragapult (with rocks), and Kyurem. At +1, Cinderace OHKOs Kommo-o (lead) and Dragalge. At +1 you live a Fisheous Rend and 2HKO with Sucker punch and while you don’t OHKO, defensive Kommo-O sets are hardcore set-up fodder.

An important note about Sucker Punch is that your type changes if the move is blocked, such as by protect or Psychic Terrain. This means that Cinderace can force choiced psychics out, even under Psychic Terrain. Dark is definitely the best defensive typing on Cinderace. You can switch types to resist a fighting attack and the rest of your team resists Fairy and Bug.

Choice Specs Duraludon's something I've been liking recently on Steel because it punishes fat stuff pretty easily. The main thing that separates it from Jirachi as a special wallbreaker is pretty much its raw power due to a higher special attack stat, especially with Choice Specs Draco Meteor, while Jirachi is more reliant on its coverage to punch holes. Thunderbolt paired with Draco Meteor is really nice against Water, as Draco Meteor hits the Electric immunities for a lot of damage. Flash Cannon helps against Fairy which is really nice considering Fairy vs Steel is the closest it's ever been at the moment with Grimmsnarl, Azumarill, and Togekiss all being huge threats to Steel, and Duraludon can check all 3 comfortably. Dark Pulse hits Aegislash for good damage which is nice considering Steel teams are prone to getting swept by Choice Specs and Swords Dance sets, and is also spammable against Ghost and Psychic teams. I pair it with U-turn Corviknight and Volt Switch Cobalion to grab momentum continuously so that Duraludon has a lot of opportunities to click buttons and punch holes throughout the game. Although still not a good matchup for Steel, Choice Scarf Cobalion and Duraludon make a cool core against Fire where Cobalion beats the faster Pokemon in Volcarona, Cinderace, and Charizard with Stone Edge and Duraludon handles bulkier Pokemon like Incineroar and Torkoal. Can do Timid > Modest to outpace things like Togekiss and Chandelure but the raw power for Modest is really nice

Heavy-duty boots substitute alows Raichu to beat almost all posion teams if played right as Drapion isn’t a serious threat while Skuntank is much bigger as its access to sucker can revenge kill it along with it being able also being able to beat Scolipede if played right.
I find that a major limitation on Raichu is electric terrain running out. Due to its frailty it’s not the easiest Pokemon to bring in, and all of its common attacks are types that Pokémon can be immune to which wastes some turns too. All together, I’m worried that spending time setting up substitute will put an even bigger time crunch on Raichu.

Have you noticed this as well? What are your thoughts?

I feel with terrain extender on Pincurchin you have ample time to set up a sub, but what would make this set even more interesting would be running Nasty Plot over Focus/knot to take even more advantage of sucker punchers, especially since you don't have Life Orb. +2 Rising Voltage in terrain is no joke and any mon that isn't ground type is surely taking a lot from it.

Just a few calcs to back this up a little bit:
+2 252+ SpA Raichu-Alola Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 176+ SpD Celebi in Electric Terrain: 201-237 (49.7 - 58.6%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ SpA Raichu-Alola Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Ferrothorn in Electric Terrain: 230-271 (65.3 - 76.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ SpA Raichu-Alola Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Blissey in Electric Terrain: 403-475 (56.4 - 66.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Raichu-Alola Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skuntank in Electric Terrain: 510-600 (124.3 - 146.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ SpA Raichu-Alola Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragapult in Electric Terrain: 331-390 (104.4 - 123%) -- guaranteed OHKO

(Grass)
Set: Assault Vest
Amoonguss @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stomping Tantrum
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Clear Smog
Snooped this set from one of Chaitanya's games, removal for non-sun Grass is very nice and AV helps with Salazzle more. This also shuts down setup Hatterene and is overall a nice special sponge.

(Flying)
Set: Anti-Electric WP
Hawlucha @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Endure
- Close Combat
- Roost
- Acrobatics
Hawlucha goes crazy against Electric and Flying is pretty solid except that it has no viable Electric-type immunities. Using Endure on the Electric move and Roosting on a incoming Sucker from like Pincurchin just completely wrecks there world. Its not Reversal because Reversal + Roost is not good synergy and +2 Atk already OHKOs everything once Galvantula is out.
(Ghost)
Set: SubHex
Dragapult @ Leftovers
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 68 Atk / 188 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hex
- Substitute
- Dragon Darts
Ghost-type teams can struggle with Poison's regenerator core or just bulky Pokemon like Toxapex in general. Sacrificing Dragon Dance is huge but Jellicent makes up for the Fire-type matchup tremendously. Hex pairs will with WOW and neighboring allies that may try to status the opposing mons throughout the matchup like Jellicent or Galarian Corsola with WOW/Scald/Toxic. I feel like this is way better than Choice Specs right now.
(Ghost)
Set: Floating Shield
Aegislash @ Air Balloon
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Shadow Sneak
- Sacred Sword
Of course Air Balloon is not optimal but having a Ground-type immunity or (temporary) is really nice. With this set, you can basically just drop Chandelure which is meant to solo Steel for another Pokemon. This set does great vs Steel, Ice, Normal, and opposing Ghost-type teams as it is able to setup on Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Corviknight, Excadrill(with balloon attached) and many more to name.
(Ghost)
Set: RestSpin
Dhelmise @ Leftovers
Ability: Steelworker
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 116 Def / 144 SpD
Careful Nature
- Anchor Shot
- Rapid Spin
- Rest
- Power Whip
Dhelmise is one of the less viable Pokemon on Ghost of course but hazard removal is nice in general as Ghost lacks it this generation. This set 1v1s Toxapex and can do a toll against Water, Rock, and Ground teams. 116 Def makes Knock a 2hko after a Spike from Zeraora I believe.

Steelkiller Victini (Psychic)
:sm/victini:
Victini @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Blue Flare
- Scorching Sands
- Glaciate

Steel is one of, if not the best types in the metagame right now and Psychic's only way to beat its multitude of strong Pokemon is by directly cteaming it. Victini is by far the best Steel answer Psychic teams have to, getting Fire and Ground coverage to hit everything on the team for super effective damage. The set is pretty self explanatory, Substitute is for setting up against Ferrothorn and Celesteela while forcing Blade form from Aegislash, Blue Flare hits everything on Steel bar Heatran which Scorching Sands covers. Glaciate is more of a move for other matchups like Flying and Dragon where it can hit Landorus, Garchomp and Dragonite, while also giving you something to snipe Air Balloon Heatran with (although i don't think people should be running it in this metagame over Leftovers). Psychic's team support is excellent, so you can easily make use of assets like Latias's Healing Wish, Slowbro's Teleport, and Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain to support Victini in the Steel matchup. It's typically a safe lead because it beats everything nicely bar Kartana which is always clicking Knock Off anyways which you can just go Slowbro against. If it ever gets worn down, Latias can heal it, so it essentially has two lives. Other sets like Choice Band and Choice Scarf that were previously good in SM are awful right now due to the dire need of a direct Steel answer on Psychic, and being choice locked makes Victini extremely predictable especially against a type with Protect and Kings Shield spam. Steelkiller Victini + Ice Calyrex makes Steel a pretty easy matchup for Psychic which I think is very valuable, although you can't really only rely on Ice Calyrex to beat the type due to how susceptible it is to super effective coverage and status. I'll add more replays later but the general idea should be clear.

CurseRest Steelix (Ground)
Steelix @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Curse / Iron Defense
- Rest
- Heavy Slam
- Body Press
Steelix has originally been ran on Ground during the Kyurem-Black meta in the past to help with its Dragon Dance + Icicle Spear sets. I am currently running Curse because it boosting to benefit both Body Press and Heavy Slam, but there is nothing wrong with Iron Defense which can outspace Kyurem-Black a little faster. Heavy Slam is over Gyro Ball because it does more to the Fairies like Hatterene and Klefki that Gyro Ball doesn't do much until you have a lot of boosts. After testing a few games on ladder then joining a tour, I've noticed that Steelix also helps with Kartana which also threatens ground with Leaf Blade. Rest + Chesto Berry is there for recovery and healing status ailments. Here are some few calculations supporting my argument along with a Replay vs Kartana Steel
:kartana:
252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Steelix: 82-97 (23.1 - 27.4%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Kartana Sacred Sword vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Steelix: 110-130 (31 - 36.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Def Steelix Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 212-250 (81.8 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
:kyurem-black:
252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-Black Icicle Spear (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Steelix: 66-81 (18.6 - 22.8%) -- approx. possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-Black Icicle Spear (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Steelix: 99-120 (27.9 - 33.8%) -- approx. 97.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-Black Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Steelix: 165-200 (46.6 - 56.4%) -- approx. 11.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Def Steelix Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem-Black: 268-316 (68.5 - 80.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

AYOOOOO

I have a really neat set some could optimize during a match-up with fairy vs poison. Some say its niche, sometimes it doesn't always work but this team actually does wonders against poison. It catches multiple people off guard by the set entirely being something most would never see coming which is why I wanted to post this neat idea. Since Tapu Lele isn't that big of a threat at the moment maybe you guys could try this set out during ladder, considering poison is a very FUN and ENJOYABLE match-up if you aren't abusing Kyurem-Black, right?

The Girls
Lets get right into the description. Tapu Lele, arguably once a mon that reigned in the first few weeks of SM MONOTYPE, now is looking very much less of an eye opener as it used to be, depending on how the meta continues to be watched. It's ability to rummage through poison is so much fun given how it can be stopped with the predominant sets abusing specs boosted psychic terrain or specs boosted moonblast, some even optimize to go for scarf to outspeed other fast mons.

tapulele.gif

Tapu Lele @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Thunderbolt
- Energy Ball

^ Now that set is as basic as it can be, since it didnt get expanding force with release as we expected. Though its still a very very VERY strong hitter with its given terrain up. Against poison the opponent could optimize something on the lines of assault vest drapion and hit those nice specs off with knock off considering you are locked into a move. I optimized this team with sticky webs! Ah yes, sticky webs. Because with the speed investment it makes those pesky poison pokemon become in range of being OHKO'd by psychic. However dark types arent affected by psychic, right?

WRONG! And I'll show you why!

gardevoir-2.gif

Gardevoir @ Ring Target
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Healing Wish

If you dont already know, Gardevoir is blessed to have a move called trick. Trick switches your item with the opponents, causing sometimes utter chaos given what specific item you are running. If you dont know what ring target is here is a description below

Ring Target: The holder's type immunities granted solely by its typing are negated.

By that description if for instance if hypothetically a Rotom-Heat switcheroo's a ring target onto a pokemon that has Water/Ground typing the opposing pokemon becomes solely water type. Which means that its Electric type moves can strike it, rendering its ability to negate any incoming attacks that it was intended to take on.

This strategy works so good with the synergy they provide because poison has to have 1 pokemon to fully cover the psychic immunity. By the opponent switching into an incoming "psychic" from gardevoir, the gardevoir can automatically just go ahead and turn the tables for the game itself. Once Ring Target is inflicted upon Skuntank or Drapion, the two only known dark types that poison can use this generation unfortunately, its dark typing is rendered useless and therefore can you healing wish pass into Tapu Lele and commence the next amount of turns just sweeping the opponent away given he doesn't have a slowking that can take a hit, which can be bypassed by something like choice band Tapu Bulu with High Horsepower. But that is for another thread at another given time. I hope you guys think this set is neat, try using it on the ladder against your poison opponents soon!

Hello, I wanted to post in this thread since it's been a bit inactive. For reference, I'm a tournament player that's also been apart of the monotype community for a couple of years now. Despite not having much experience with SS Monotype, I was able to be comfortable with it enough to innovate in the builder a bit in the latest MWP tournament. All the sets I'm about to post have been used in an official for legitimacy, here goes and hope you all enjoy them!

:Cloyster:
Cloyster @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Liquidation/Rapid Spin
While Cloyster is known as a setup sweeper, I wanted to take a different approach. This Scarf gives me a better edge against Fairy, Psychic, Dragon, and flying. Icicle Spear is free vs dragon and flying, being able to break faster mons behind subs such as Thundurus and Kyruem, while also being a solid late-game cleaner. Toxic spikes can also be a great surprise factor vs ghost if they decide to not pack Gengar, as seen by the week 2 game vs Fylkir Pudin in MWP https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8monotype-1242624641 Rapid spin can be used as a last-ditch effort to remove hazards, while liquidation can chip mons such as Excadrill, Cinderace, etc.

:Toxapex:
Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Block
- Knock Off
- Recover
- Spite
While playing in various tournaments and different tiers over the years, I've noticed there's a lot of sets that can be used outside their respective tiers. I got the idea of block Pex from my friend ABR after he used in his OLT Semifinals game a year ago or so. I tweaked it, and let me tell you this is demonic. With Block/Spite, you're able to Trap Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Celesteela, Mantine, Amoonguss, Drapion, Weezing, and many other pokemon on different types. The drawback is that you can only trap 1 mon, but this allows you to open a hole in different builds so that your teammates can make progress. I used this vs zugubu royale week 4 of MWP https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8monotype-1250671757-r55lxc118h0c7gib4rb6db1l13zd9pjpw I did indeed mess up by not letting Drapion struggle out and got smashed as a result. But if I did play this correctly you can see how trapping drap would open his team up to future sight spam. Crafty set that can be dangerous if used correctly.

:aegislash:
Aegislash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Close Combat/Flash cannon
- Steel Beam
- Destiny Bond
Despite being made for a Lando I meta, this is personally one of my favorite sets. Scarf steel beam allows Aegi to 2HKO/OHKO Some of steels most annoying Issues such as Urishifu, Zapdos Galar, Landorus, and Hydreigon.
252 SpA Aegislash-Blade Steel Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Hydreigon: 262-310 (80.6 - 95.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Aegislash-Blade Steel Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 291-343 (91.2 - 107.5%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Aegislash-Blade Steel Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zapdos-Galar: 262-310 (81.6 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Aegislash-Blade Steel Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Urshifu: 364-430 (106.7 - 126%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Shadow ball is your main STAB Move to hit neutrally vs most of the tier, and Close Combat/flash is there to round out coverage. The Killer here though is destiny bond, which can land a surprise suicide against Pokemon like Nidoking, Landorus T, Heatran, and Urishifu which are really dangerous against steel Monotype teams. I used this set vs Chaitanya week 3 of MWP https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8monotype-1246720825 https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8monotype-1246727239 (revealed destiny bond g1 but he swapped. But in g2 I got to play around trick scarf rotom with my own scarf aegi!)

:thundurus Therian:
Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 24 HP / 232 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Grass Knot
Standard Scarf Thundurus, but with toxic for the flying mirror. You get to hit Zapdos/opposing thundurus which can be annoying both for flying and electric respectively. I made a team with this set for Bushtush to use in his game for MWP https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen8monotype-536336 which put him in a VERY good position vs a sub Thundurus build that otherwise destroyed him.

:dracovish:
Dracovish @ Choice Band
Ability: Strong Jaw
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Fishious Rend
- Crunch
- Psychic Fangs
Standard Vish but edge to hit Mantine vs flying. Once the water immunity is lured into a kill, teammates can go ham. Used this week 1 of MWP vs Leru where hitting edge vs Volcanion put me at odds to win https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8monotype-1238507651

:zapdos galar:
Zapdos-Galar @ Leftovers
Ability: Defiant
- Bulk Up
- Throat Chop
- Thunderous Kick
- Substitute

Made in the Celesteela(overrated mon) steel meta, This set was made as a means to basically 6-0 steel and dark. Throat chop hits Aegislash and kick deals with opposing partners on mono steel, without many mons being able to make counterplay. Vs dark you literally can sub on anything slower as they pivot to Mandibuzz, bulk up twice and win the game. I unfortunately do not have the EV spread on this laptop, (I'll edit it later) but the evs make it so Mandibuzz cannot break out sub with foul play. I passed this set for Starmaster to use in his game vs yedla in MWP https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen8monotype-535460 Without the Flinch he basically gets the 6-0, as nothing else can deal with Zapdos on dark, and Mandibuzz is unable to break its subs.

I Hope newer players to the tier can see post like these and strive for creativity, trust me there's a ton of room for it. I also want to see some of the more experienced players post in this thread as well, I know you all have a lot to share.

Thanks for reading.

Mamoswine @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 112 HP / 136 Atk / 160 SpD / 100 Spe
Careful Nature

- Icicle Crash

calcs: 252 SpA Spectrier Shadow Ball vs. 112 HP / 160+ SpD Assault Vest Mamoswine: 105-124 (26.9 - 31.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO +1 252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 112 HP / 160+ SpD Assault Vest Thick Fat Mamoswine: 168-198 (43.1 - 50.8%) -- 2.7% chance to 2HKO

Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Giga Drain
- Psychic
- Bug Buzz

Although this set lacks a Fire-type move it is able to put in work vs Water teams especially with screens support from Rotom-H it can setup a Quiver Dance's with ease in this matchup and be able to break through Toxapex with Psychic, in addition to being able to Giga Drain vs all the other mons such as Tapu Fini and etc.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen8monotype-571797

:Landorus-Therian: (Flying)
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Stealth Rock

Standard Scarf Lando but with Outrage to ease the Dragon MU a little.

:Aegislash: (Steel)
Aegislash @ Spell Tag
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 160 HP / 252 SpA / 96 Spe
Quiet Nature
- Shadow Sneak
- Shadow Ball
- King's Shield
- Flash Cannon

Our MPL team used this set a few times during the tour, I wanted to try to bluff a Specs Aegislash in certain situations to make it seem that we are locked into both Sword forme and Shadow Ball, thus the opponent may think we are inclined to switch out. Spell Tag Aegi hits very hard and gives you the freedom of throwing off Max SpA+ Shadow Balls while also being able to switch back into Shield forme. Shadow Sneak is also boosted by Spell Tag, giving Aegislash the ability to revenge kill weakened foes easier with Shadow Sneak.

:Urshifu:
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Protective Pads
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thunder Punch
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Taunt

Usually I only post sets that have seen tournament play, but this is decent. This shifu set shuts down rocky helmet mons on steel (Skarmory/Ferro) with taunt to prevent recovery/leech from Celesteela. Works really well if you can chip down skarm/celesteela early. This set is also really good against Mantine flying. You taunt/Surging opposing mons after rocks and tpunch Martine if they happen to switch into it.

:victini:
Victini @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- V-create
- Future Sight
- U-turn
- Bolt Strike

This only kinda helps psychic/fire in the poison match up. A set used in CG OU usually, but you basically get future sight up and force pex/something that switches into Vcreate/fire stabs in. If you get the turns right you can put a dent in bulky types such as poison and flying.

Would love to see more people post more in these threads, it's nice to see what other can come up with. :toast:

Moltres-Galar @ Leftovers
Ability: Berserk
EVs: 252 HP / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Fiery Wrath
- Nasty Plot
- Rest / Agility

This originated from the MLT ladder when people prepped for attribute's screens fairy team to stop tapu fini from setting up but ive been using it a lot and its amazing outside of it. Taunt goltres is really silly cause it invalidates a lot of the usual counterplay. Leech seed users like ferro and celes gets shut down, heatran and drapion can no longer force it out with whirlwind/roar, mantine and toxapex cant haze anymore. Taunt gmoltres is stupid as shit if i were tbh; the counterplay for it on a lot of teams i have is basically "hope my opponent does not bring it" because its really uncommon atm but the metas gonna be hell if people start actually using it. A lot of the balance types have little to no counterplay since gmoltres is fat as shit and can live a lot of things you throw at it when u can no longer check it defensively. The EV spread outspeeds Nidoking but u can run a slower spread with agility if u want. I use agility with wish+heal bell togekiss because giving up rest is really sucky because rest is incredible for winning long games (this mon should be banned).
