[Monotype/Flying] Zapdos

[OVERVIEW]

**Flying:**

Due to its good defensive Electric / Flying typing (RC) coupled with its decent defensive stats, Zapdos can act as an excellent specially defensive wall for Flying-type teams. Zapdos also has a great Special Attack stat, which, even when it is running a defensive set, allows it to not be passive and deal respectable damage to its foes. Its STAB Discharge lets it spread paralysis. It also provides crucial entry hazard removal in the form of Defog, which allows it and its teammates to switch in and out more often. Due to its typing, Zapdos is able to take Electric-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Flying teams, as it only takes neutral damage. It is also the only Electric / Flying type that has access to reliable recovery, which it gets in the form of Roost. However, Zapdos's somewhat lacking Defense stat can leave it weak to many physical attackers when running a specially defensive set, which should be taken into consideration when putting it into your team.

Moves
========

Defog is crucial to this set, as it allows Zapdos to clear entry hazards, particularly Stealth Rock, from its side, which is extremely important for Flying, as most Flying-types are weak to Stealth Rock. Roost is an important move for Zapdos, as it provides it with reliable recovery, giving it the longevity to better utilize its typing and ability to clear hazards from the field. Discharge provides Zapdos with a reliable way to deal damage, and, due to its chance of paralyzing the foe, it can give opponents second thoughts about setting up against Zapdos. Volt Switch is also an option instead of Discharge, as it provides momentum. However, it has a lower Base Power than Discharge; forces Zapdos to keep switching, which can cause it to take heavy damage from Stealth Rock; and leaves Zapdos unable to paralyze foes, which can make it setup bait. Toxic will put foes on a timer, preventing them from stalling and often forcing switches, and helps Zapdos wear down opposing walls. Heat Wave is an option instead of Toxic, as it allows Zapdos to hit Steel-types such as Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn, both of which can threaten Flying and switch into Zapdos easily otherwise.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP investment is used to greatly increase Zapdos's overall bulk. 16 Speed EVs are used to allow Zapdos to outspeed base 70 Speed Pokemon without a boosting nature, such as Adamant Bisharp. The rest of the EVs are put into Special Defense with a Calm nature to allow Zapdos to take as many special hits as possible. There is also the possibility of running an alternative spread of 252 HP / 148 SpD / 108 Spe with a Calm nature, as this allows Zapdos to outspeed maximum Speed base 70 Speed Pokemon with a boosting nature, such as Jolly Bisharp, Cloyster, Breloom, and Timid Volcanion, and then potentially KO them before they get to attack. Pressure is used on this set, as it allows for more effective PP stalling with Roost, which can often be crucial; furthermore, if Static is used, Zapdos cannot use Defog, as it is illegal. Leftovers provides Zapdos with passive recovery, greatly increasing its longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Zapdos can be used as a switch-in to a majority of special attackers including Pokemon like Hydreigon and Thundurus. Its reliable recovery means it is consistently able to switch into these attackers, so you should always try and keep it at full health by making you sure you use Roost as often as possible. However, it is unable to switch into extremely hard-hitting Pokemon such as Keldeo and Mega Charizard Y. Zapdos is able to beat many opposing walls through a combination of Toxic and Pressure; Toxic is able to put the foe on a timer, forcing your opponent to either sacrifice the Pokemon or switch it out, while Pressure allows Zapdos to PP stall certain attacks. It is also important to make sure Stealth Rock is off the field as much as possible, as it prevents Zapdos from switching into lots of hits it otherwise would be able to wall, such as Gengar's Shadow Ball and Life Orb Thundurus's Thunderbolt. This can be done by switching Zapdos in while the foe sets the Stealth Rock and then using Defog immediately. Zapdos is also capable of stalling out Stealth Rock users due to Pressure, as Pressure means Defog has more PP than the foe's Stealth Rock. It is also a good idea to try and spread status with Zapdos as much as possible earlier in the game so as to better support your team. To avoid being worn down too easily, it is best to use Roost often and to avoid status moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Toxic, as they greatly reduce Zapdos's longevity. Zapdos should feel free to use its Electric-type STAB moves when it's safe, as Discharge's secondary effect of paralyzing can cripple foes and can dissuade switches or punish opponents attempting to switch in Pokemon that would counter Zapdos, whilst Volt Switch gives you momentum against switches and the ability to switch into a counter to whatever the opponent brings in.

Team Options
========

The most common teammate for Zapdos is Skarmory, as they form the "SkarmDos" core, which is seen on most Flying-type teams and is able to wall a majority of the metagame. The two Pokemon work together especially well, as they cover each others weaknesses; Skarmory is able to take Ice- and Rock-type attacks for Zapdos, and Zapdos is able to take Electric-type attacks for Skarmory. Their stats also complement each other, as Zapdos is a great specially defensive wall, and Skarmory is a great physically defensive wall. Zapdos also pairs well with Togekiss, as Togekiss can use Heal Bell to get rid of status for Zapdos, which allows it to better perform as a wall, as it can stay in longer and use Roost less. As well as defensive options, Zapdos works well with offensive Pokemon. It pairs especially well with Mega Gyarados, as, due to its typing, Gyarados is able to take Ice-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Zapdos, and Zapdos is also able to remove entry hazards from the field to allow Gyarados to switch more freely as well as to wear down walls that may otherwise prevent Gyarados from sweeping through Toxic. Zapdos is also a good partner for Dragonite, as it can keep hazards off the field, which keeps Dragonite's Multiscale intact, allowing it to perform better. Another Pokemon that appreciates hazard removal from Zapdos is Mega Charizard Y, which would otherwise take heavy damage from entry hazards. It is also able to beat some Ice-types that would otherwise threaten Zapdos with their super effective attacks. Another offensive partner that works well with Zapdos is Landorus-T, as alongside Zapdos's Volt Switch it can provide good momentum with U-turn. This core is especially potent because of Landorus-T's Intimidate and Ground / Flying typing. This means it is able to take Rock-type attacks for Zapdos, while Zapdos takes the special hits that Landorus-Therian is less oriented to take. Gliscor is also a potential partner, acting as a stallbreaker for Zapdos by using Taunt against opposing walls and also absorbing any crippling status for it.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

**Flying:**

Substitute allows Zapdos to avoid status and thus act as a stallbreaker through the combination of Toxic and Substitute, allowing to to beat opposing walls that would rely on their own status moves. However, Zapdos struggles to fit Substitute onto its moveset, as it values all of its other moves more. Roar can also be used, as it allows Zapdos to phaze foes as they attempt to set up and helps to rack up residual damage from entry hazards. However, it faces the same issues as Substitute, as Zapdos finds it hard to fit it onto its moveset.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Flying:**

**Mixed Attackers**: Mixed attackers can prey on Zapdos's weaker Defense stat and hit it for large amounts of damage; for example, Landorus using Rock Slide or Hoopa-U using Hyperspace Fury greatly threatens Zapdos.

**Status**: Status effects such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp threaten Zapdos greatly, as they cause residual damage, which Zapdos hates, as it needs to have as much health as possible to be able to reliably check most special attackers.

**Taunt**: Taunt prevents Zapdos from using Defog or Roost, leaving it incapable of performing its role on the team.

**Wallbreakers**: While Zapdos has high bulk, it is not able to wall some of the stronger wallbreakers in the metagame, such as Mega Charizard Y and Mega Medicham. Zapdos also often fails to wall Choice Specs users such as Psyshock variants of Meloetta.

**Dragon-types**: Dragon-types such as Garchomp and Kyurem-B take little damage from both of Zapdos's attacks and hit it back hard with their STAB moves.

**Stealth Rock**: Stealth Rock will cause Zapdos to lose 25% of its health upon switching in, rendering it unable to switch into many common attackers such as Life Orb Thundurus and Latios. Zapdos is also threatened by some Stealth Rock users such as Tyranitar and Chansey, the latter of which is able to shrug off any attack by Zapdos and cripple it with Toxic.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Terrakion and Tyranitar take little damage from Zapdos and threaten it with their STAB attacks.

**Ice-types**: Ice-types such as Mamoswine, Weavile, and Kyurem-B are able to force Zapdos out due to their super effective STAB attacks.

**Walls**: If Zapdos is not running any status moves, it often struggles to break through most walls, and even when running Toxic, it will fail to break through walls running Heal Bell, such as Chansey and Lanturn.

I wouldn't really say Zapdos has "high HP and SpD" because it is just 90/90. This is pretty decent, but I've always thought of Zapdos's amazing walling capabilities as being due to its Typing combined with Decent bulk. While it can act as a general SpD switch-in to some things, it really can't take stuff like Specs Hydro from Keldeo or Charizard-Y's Fire Blast.
That's why I think you should change it to "It's Electric and Flying typing coupled with decent base HP and SpD allows it to act as most Flying team's switch in to Electric and some Ice moves, which other Flying Pokemon need for support."

Like for your Skarm post, order the moves in relevancy. In this case: Defog/Roost/Discharge or Volt/Toxic or Heat Wave.

Usage Tips: Change "switch-in to Special Attackers" to "Zapdos can be used to switch-in to a majority of special attackers including Pokemon like Hydreigon and Thundurus, however, it is unable to switch-in to extremely hard hitting Pokemon such as Keldeo and Charizard-Y."

I don't really think Dragon Types in particular threaten Zapdos out, it's more like a few Pokemon like Mega Garchomp (access to Stone Edge) and Kyurem Black that really threaten it out due to super effective, powerful moves. If Zapdos lands a Toxic on Pokemon like Latios or Hydreigon, it can easily roost stall them. You need specific examples to support that claim so just add in Mega Chomp and KyuB.
Also add Rock-Types for Counters, Pokemon like Terrakion and Tyranitar easily force it out. Same with Ice Pokemon like Mamoswine and Weavile.

After implementations, QC: 1/3

"There is also the possibility of running an alternative spread of 248 HP / 152 SpD / 108 Spe with a Calm nature, as this allows Zapdos to outspeed Pokemon that are running max Speed and a boosting nature with base 70 Speed, such as Bisharp, Cloyster, or Volcanion, and then potentially KO them before they get to attack."

Breloom's huge to mention there

In Usage Tips mention how you should be Roosting often when switching into Defog because it is easy to wear down by SR. Also mention how you should avoid WoW and Toxic

I'd specifically mention Subsitute + Toxic in OO, say how it can break Normal teams by PP stalling Chansey. I'd also mention HP Ice in OO to hit Gliscor, Garchomp, Landorus-T, etc.

Also: put "SpD" in the EVs not "Special Defense", and "Spe" instead of "Speed"

Good job QC 2/3

This is more of a grammar thing, but this showed up a lot. "The opponent" is the other player, while "the foe" is the opponent's Pokemon. Make sure to use the right term for the right circumstance.

You mention entry hazards very generally throughout. Change to saying specifically Stealth Rock. Zapdos does not care about any other entry hazards.

In your Set, you're only using 504 EVs right now, add 4 to SpD to make it 248 HP / 204 SpD / 16 Spe.

In Moves, explain Roost. Roost gives it the longevity needed to take full advantage of its typing and its ability to use Defog throughout a match and Pressure stall.

You mention Excadrill as a target for Heat Wave, but Zapdos cannot stay in on Excadrill and Skarmory walls it completely. Instead, I would recommend Mega Scizor, which can attempt to use Zapdos without Heat Wave as setup bait. Skarmory does take a serious amount from a +2 Superpower and can only phaze out Mega Scizor so many times, so Zapdos being able to OHKO it is very nice. It also hits Breloom for serious damage, which is probably a more relevant problem than Ferrothorn, but that's up to you.

In Set Details, now that Static is released I think it's relevant to explain why it's bad? Defog is only legal on Pressure, and Pressure allows Zapdos to PP stall.

Explain that Leftovers gives Zapdos passive recovery, improving its longevity substantially.

In Usage Tips, I would mention that Zapdos should look to spread status as early as possible to support its team.

In general, Zapdos should feel free to use its Electric-type STAB attacks when safe, as Discharge's paralysis is crippling and Volt Switch keeps up momentum.

In Team Options when you mention Landorus-T, also mention that they have good natural defensive synergy. Landorus-T has Intimidate and takes on Rock-type attacks, while Zapdos can take the special attacks that are aimed at Landorus-T, making the pivoting into each other even more powerful.

In Checks and Counters:
Mixed attackers should have an example. Rock Slide Landorus or Hoopa-U would work here.

You said Strong STAB attacks, which I think should be changed to Wallbreakers instead. Further, you said Choice Specs Latios, which I don't think is really a thing compared to Life Orb. I would do something like saying Zapdos can't wall wallbreakers and give the example of Mega Charizard Y and then add on Choice Specs users such as Psyshock Meloetta. (Psychic variants can't break Zapdos)

In the Stealth Rock section, you said Zapdos is threatened by Stealth Rock users and gave Garchomp as one of the examples. Stealth Rock setting Garchomp doesn't actually threaten Zapdos, as the regular forme is too weak and the Mega forme is usually mixed and won't have enough power to break through it either. Instead, I would say Chansey, which can use Toxic to cripple Zapdos.

I would add a section for walls. Zapdos that lack Toxic can't even hope to touch any walls. And even if it does have Toxic, some walls such as Lanturn and Chansey (as already mentioned) still aren't particularly troubled by Toxic either and can cripple Zapdos back and set up Calm Mind or Stealth Rock.

Mostly minor things here, so good work!

QC 3/3

Edit: Bondie, Changed Mega Sableye example in the walls for Checks and Counters to Lanturn

Zapdos is also capable of stalling out Stealth Rock users due to Pressure, as Pressure means Defog has more PP than the opponent's foe's Stealth Rock, so you can stay in and keep using Defog until their Stealth Rock runs out of PP. It is also a good idea to try and spread status as much as possible earlier in the game with Zapdos, so as to better support your team. To avoid being worn down too easily it is best to use Roost often whilst switching, (you can't use Roost and switch) and to avoid statuses moves such as Will-O-Wisp or and Toxic, (AC) as they greatly reduce Zapdos's longevity. Zapdos should feel free to be clicking using its Electric-type STAB moves when it's safe, as Discharge's secondary effect of paralyzing is crippling and can dissuade switches or punish people attempting to switch into Pokemon that would counter Zapdos.

Team Options
========

Flying offers many great team options for Zapdos. The most common pair with Zapdos is Skarmory, as they form the "SkarmDos" core, a core which is seen on most Flying-type teams and is able to wall a majority of the metagame. The two Pokemon work together especially well, (AC) as they cover each others weaknesses; Skarmory is able to take Ice- and Rock-type attacks for Zapdos, and Zapdos is able to take Electric-type attacks for Skarmory. Their stats also compliment complement each other, as Zapdos is a great specially defensive wall, and Skarmory is a great physically defensive wall. Zapdos is also well-paired paired well with Togekiss, as Togekiss can use Heal Bell to get rid of Zapdos's statuses, which allows it to better perform as a wall, (AC) as it can stay in longer, (RC) and has to use Roost less. As well as defensive options, Zapdos works well with offensive Pokemon. It is paired especially well with Mega Gyarados, as, due to its typing, Gyarados is able to take Ice-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Zapdos, and Zapdos is also able to remove hazards from the field to allow Gyarados to switch more freely, and it is able to wear down walls through Toxic that may otherwise prevent Gyarados from sweeping. Zapdos is also a good partner for Dragonite, as it can keep hazards off the field, (AC) which means Dragonite's Multiscale is kept intact, allowing it to perform better. Another Pokemon that appreciates hazard removal from Zapdos is Mega Charizard Y, which would otherwise be taking heavy damage from entry hazards. Charizard is also able to beat some Ice-types that would otherwise threaten Zapdos with their super effective attacks. Another offensive partner that works well with Zapdos is Landorus-Therian, it is a good option as alongside Zapdos's Volt Switch as it can provide good momentum alongside Zapdos with U-turn. This core is especially potent as Landorus-Therian has Intimidate, (RC) and a Ground / Flying typing. This means it is able to take Rock-type attacks for Zapdos, whilst Zapdos takes the special hits that Landorus-Therian is less oriented to take. Gliscor is also a potential partner, acting as a stallbreaker for Zapdos by using Taunt against opposing walls, and it also absorbs any crippling staus for Zapdos.

One other option that Zapdos can make use of is Substitute. Substitute allows Zapdos to avoid statuses and thus act as a stallbreaker, (RC) through the combination of Toxic and Substitute, (AC) allowing to to beat opposing walls that would rely on their own stats moves. However, (AC) Zapdos struggles to fit Substitute into onto it's moveset, (AC) as it values all four of its moves. [OVERVIEW]

**Flying**

Due to its good defensive Electric / Flying typing, coupled with its decent defensive stats, Zapdos can act as an excellent specially defensive wall for Flying-type teams. Zapdos also has a strong Special Attack stat, which, even when it is running a defensive set, allows it to still not be passive and deal respectable damage to its foes. Its STAB move, Discharge, also lets it spread paralysis. (I got rid of the last sentence, so I made a sentence for the info that hadn't already been mentioned. Feel free to edit it as you like of course) It also provides crucial hazard removal support in the form of Defog, which allows it and its teammates to switch in and out more often. Due to its typing, Zapdos is able to take Electric-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Flying teams, as it only takes neutral damage. It is also the only Electric / Flying type that has access to reliable recovery, which it gets in the form of Roost. However, Zapdos's somewhat lacking Defense stat can leave it weak to many physical attackers when running a specially defensive set, so this which should be taken into consideration when putting it into your team. Despite this, Zapdos is still an excellent option, as it has a great typing for Flying-type teams, and it provides lots of support through Defog and paralysis from Discharge. (stuff like is really fluffy as it hardly adds anything meaningful to the overview)

Defog is crucial to this set, as it allows Zapdos to clear entry hazards, particularly Stealth Rock, from its side, which is extremely important for Flying, as most Flying-types are weak to Stealth Rock. Roost is an important move for Zapdos, (AC) as it provides it with reliable recovery, (AC) gives giving it the longevity to better utilize its typing and ability to clear hazards from the field through providing it with reliable recovery. (flows a lot better with the rearrangement imo) Discharge provides you Zapdos with a reliable way to deal damage, and, due to its chance of paralyzing the foe, it can give opponents second thoughts about setting up against Zapdos. Volt Switch is also an option instead of Discharge, as it provides momentum. However, this has a lower Base Power, and it should be noted that this means Zapdos has to keep switching, which can cause it to take heavy damage from Stealth Rock, and this leaves Zapdos unable to paralyze foes, which can make it setup bait. However, it has a lower Base Power than Discharge, forces Zapdos to keep switching, which can cause it to take heavy damage from Stealth Rock, and leaves Zapdos unable to paralyze foes, which can make it setup bait. (the sentence felt really awkward. Cleaned it up as best as I could while retaining the notable info and most of the original wording) Toxic will put foes on a timer, preventing them from stalling and often forcing switches, and it helps Zapdos wear down opposing walls. Heat Wave is an option instead of Toxic, as it allows Zapdos to hit Steel-types such as Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn, both of which can threaten Flying and will be able to switch into Zapdos easily if it is not running Heat Wave otherwise.

Set Details
========

248 HP EVs are optimal for allowing Zapdos to switch into Stealth Rock more often, as it means Zapdos has they give Zapdos an odd HP value, so it takes a rounded down amount of damage from switching into Stealth Rock. 16 Speed EVs are used to allow Zapdos to outspeed Pokemon that are running 70 base Speed base 70 Speed Pokemon without a boosting nature, such as Adamant Bisharp. The rest of the EVs are put into Special Defense to allow Zapdos to take as many special hits as possible. There is also the possibility of running an alternative spread of 248 HP / 152 SpD / 108 Spe with a Calm nature, as this allows Zapdos to outspeed Pokemon that are running max Speed and a boosting nature with base 70 Speed maximum Speed base 70 Speed Pokemon with a boosting nature, such as Jolly Bisharp, Cloyster, Breloom, or and Timid Volcanion, and then potentially KO them before they get to attack. Pressure is used on this set, as it greatly outclasses Static because it allows for PP stalling with Roost, which can often be crucial, and if Static is used, Zapdos cannot use Defog as it is illegal. Pressure also allows for PP stalling with Roost, which can often be crucial, so it is the more useful ability. Leftovers provides Zapdos with passive recovery, greatly increasing its longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Zapdos can be used to as a switch-in to a majority of special attackers including Pokemon like Hydreigon and Thundurus. Its reliable recovery means it is consistently able to switch into these attackers, so you should always try and keep it at full health by making you sure you use Roost as often as possible. However, it is unable to switch in to into extremely hard hitting Pokemon such as Keldeo and Mega Charizard Y. Zapdos is able to beat many opposing walls through a combination of Toxic and Pressure; Toxic is able to put the opponent foe on a timer, forcing them your opponent to either sacrifice the Pokemon or switch it out, whilst while (Smogon uses American English phrases, not British English) Pressure allows Zapdos to PP stall certain attacks. It is also important to try and make sure Stealth Rock are is off the field as much as possible, as they prevent it prevents Zapdos from switching into lots of hits it otherwise would be able to wall, such as Gengar's Shadow Ball or Life Orb Thundurus's Thunderbolt. This can be done by switching Zapdos in whilst while the foe sets the Stealth Rock, (RC) and then using Defog immediately. Zapdos is also capable of stalling out Stealth Rock users due to Pressure, as Pressure means Defog has more PP than the foe's Stealth Rock, so you can stay in and keep using Defog until their Stealth Rock runs out of PP. (but what about Volt Switch, why freely use that? jw seeing as it's also an Electric-type STAB move)

As well as defensive options,(RC) Zapdos also works well with offensive Pokemon. It pairs especially well with Mega Gyarados,(RC) as,(RC) due to its typing (Yet you only use one type as an example of type synergy...).(end sentence),(RC) Mega Gyarados is able to take Ice-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Zapdos,(RC) and while Zapdos is also able to remove hazards from the field,(AC) to allow which allows Gyarados to switch more freely.(end sentence) Furthermore, Zapdos can use Toxic to and wear down walls that may otherwise prevent Gyarados from sweeping through Toxic (Having this all in one sentence made it sound super messy and caused conflicts. For example, you made it sound like Gyarados uses Toxic to prevent walls from stopping its own sweep. These changes make the whole point a lot clearer). Zapdos is also a good partner for Dragonite,(RC) as because it can keep remove hazards off from the field, which keeps Dragonite's Multiscale intact, thus allowing it to perform better (reduces repeated use in "as" and "keeping"). Another Pokemon that appreciates hazard removal from Zapdos is Mega Charizard Y, which would otherwise take heavy damage from entry hazards. Mega Charizard is also able to beat some (some? The way you worded sentences often caused conflicts that could have been avoided had you worded it differently. Also, you should refer to this the next time you make an analysis. Especially with the alternate formes. However, it was still a good read.

also just use max HP, you'll take one more HP of Stealth Rock damage but you'll also gain one more HP of Leftovers recovery, which balances that out pretty much right away. (248 HP has 383 HP, taking 383/4 = 95,75 rounded down to 95 HP SR damage and gaining 383/16 = 23,9375 rounded down to 23 HP lefties recovery, whereas max hp zapdos has 384 HP, taking 384/4 = 96 HP SR damage and gaining 384 / 16 = 24 HP from lefties; as you can see, the extra 1 HP lost is made up for immediately)

bunch of good changes fireflame, which i plucked along into my check; however, some seemed more personal preference than actually improving the writing (e.g., the added "thus" in TO, super effective STAB attacks -> super effective STAB moves, most of the and -> while changes, couple more), and a couple others seemed to be looking for errors where there isn't one (e.g., the ambiguous "it" in the first heading of checks and counters; technically you're right, but there's no one that's gonna assume the defense stat is gonna take lots of damage because that just makes no sense, and then specifying it to Zapdos only makes the writing clunky. also the comment on choice specs users in c&c, because i genuinely don't see why the fact that meloetta uses psyshock is a problem, it's still a choice specs user, which is the kind of pokemon you'd be using your special wall for, that zapdos can't take on). so it's mostly a couple mentality changes that i'd like to see for now :toast:

It is also the only Electric / Flying type that has access to reliable recovery, which it gets in the form of Roost. However, Zapdos's somewhat lacking Defense stat can leave it weak to many physical attackers when running a specially defensive set, which should be taken into consideration when putting it into your team.

Moves

However, it has a lower Base Power than Discharge; (SC) forces Zapdos to keep switching, which can cause it to take heavy damage from Stealth Rock; (SC) and leaves Zapdos unable to paralyze foes, which can make it setup bait.

Set Details
========

248 HP EVs are optimal for allowing Zapdos to switch into Stealth Rock more often, as they give Zapdos an odd HP value, so it takes a rounded down amount of damage from switching into Stealth Rock. ("Maximum HP investment is used to greatly increase Zapdos's bulk" or w/e) 16 Speed EVs are used to allow Zapdos to outspeed base 70 Speed Pokemon without a boosting nature, such as Adamant Bisharp. The rest of the EVs are put into Special Defense with a Calm nature to allow Zapdos to take as many special hits as possible. There is also the possibility of running an alternative spread of 248 HP / 152 SpD / 108 Spe (252 HP / 148 SpD then I reckon) with a Calm nature, as this allows Zapdos to outspeed maximum Speed base 70 Speed Pokemon with a boosting nature, such as Jolly Bisharp, Cloyster, Breloom, and Timid Volcanion, and then potentially KO them before they get to attack. Pressure is used on this set, as it greatly outclasses Static because it (implied basically) allows for more effective PP stalling with Roost, which can often be crucial; (SC) and furthermore, (AC) if Static is used, Zapdos cannot use Defog, (AC) as it is illegal. Leftovers provides Zapdos with passive recovery, greatly increasing its longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Zapdos can be used as a switch-in to a majority of special attackers including Pokemon like Hydreigon and Thundurus. Its reliable recovery means it is consistently able to switch into these attackers, so you should always try and keep it at full health by making you sure you use Roost as often as possible. However, it is unable to switch into extremely hard-hitting (AH) Pokemon such as Keldeo and Mega Charizard Y. Zapdos is able to beat many opposing walls through a combination of Toxic and Pressure; Toxic is able to put the foe on a timer, forcing your opponent to either sacrifice the Pokemon or switch it out, while Pressure allows Zapdos to PP stall certain attacks. It is also important to try and make sure Stealth Rock is off the field as much as possible, as it prevents Zapdos from switching into lots of hits it otherwise would be able to wall, such as Gengar's Shadow Ball or and Life Orb Thundurus's Thunderbolt. This can be done by switching Zapdos in while the foe sets the Stealth Rock and then using Defog immediately. Zapdos is also capable of stalling out Stealth Rock users due to Pressure, as Pressure means Defog has more PP than the foe's Stealth Rock, so you can stay in and keep using Defog until their Stealth Rock runs out of PP. It is also a good idea to try and spread status with Zapdos as much as possible earlier in the game with Zapdos so as to better support your team. To avoid being worn down too easily, it is best to use Roost often and to avoid status moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Toxic, as they greatly reduce Zapdos's longevity. Zapdos should feel free to use its Electric-type STAB moves when it's safe, as Discharge's secondary effect of paralyzing can cripple foes and can dissuade switches or punish opponents attempting to switch in Pokemon that would counter Zapdos, whilst Volt Switch gives you momentum against switches (RC) and the ability to switch into a counter to whatever the opponent brings in.

Team Options
========

The most common pair with teammate for Zapdos is Skarmory, as they form the "SkarmDos" core, a core which is seen on most Flying-type teams and is able to wall a majority of the metagame. Zapdos also pairs well with Togekiss, as Togekiss can use Heal Bell to get rid of Zapdos's status for Zapdos, which allows it to better perform as a wall, as it can stay in longer and use Roost less. As well as defensive options, Zapdos works well with offensive Pokemon. It pairs especially well with Mega Gyarados, as, due to its typing, Gyarados is able to take Ice-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Zapdos, and Zapdos is also able to remove entry hazards from the field to allow Gyarados to switch more freely and as well as to (this solves the ambiguity too without chopping up the sentence im pretty sure) wear down walls that may otherwise prevent Gyarados from sweeping through Toxic. Charizard It is also able to beat some (yeah "some" does sound weird here) Ice-types that would otherwise threaten Zapdos with their super effective attacks. Another offensive partner that works well with Zapdos is Landorus-Therian, as alongside Zapdos's Volt Switch it can provide good momentum with U-turn. This core is especially potent as because of Landorus-Therian has Landorus-T's Intimidate and a Ground / Flying typing.

**Flying**

Substitute allows Zapdos to avoid status and thus act as a stallbreaker through the combination of Toxic and Substitute, allowing to to beat opposing walls that would rely on their own status moves. However, Zapdos struggles to fit Substitute onto its moveset, as it values all of its other moves more. Roar can also be used, as it allows Zapdos to phaze foes as they attempt to set up and helps to rack up residual damage from entry hazards. However, it faces the same issues as Substitute, as Zapdos finds it hard to fit it onto its moveset.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Flying**

**Mixed Attackers**: Mixed attackers can prey on Zapdos's weaker Defense stat and hit it for large amounts of damage; for example, Landorus-I using Rock Slide or Hoopa-Unbound using Hyperspace Fury greatly threatens Zapdos.

**Wallbreakers**: While Zapdos has high bulk, it is not able to wall some of the stronger wallbreakers in the metagame, such as Mega Charizard Y or and Mega Medicham. Zapdos also often fails to wall Choice Specs users such as Psyshock variants of Meloetta.

**Dragon-types**: Dragon-types such as Garchomp and Kyurem-B take little damage from both of Zapdos's attacks&emdash;Discharge and Heat Wave&emdash; (redundant yes) and hit it back hard with their STAB moves.

**Ice-types**: Ice-types such as Mamoswine, Weavile, and Kyurem-Black are able to force Zapdos out due to their super effective STAB attacks.

**Walls**: If Zapdos is not running any status moves, it often struggles to break through most walls, and even when running Toxic, it will fail to break through walls running Heal Bell, such as Chansey and Lanturn.

also just use max HP, you'll take one more HP of Stealth Rock damage but you'll also gain one more HP of Leftovers recovery, which balances that out pretty much right away.

**Flying**

Due to its good defensive Electric / Flying typing (RC) coupled with its decent defensive stats, Zapdos can act as an excellent specially defensive wall for Flying-type teams. Zapdos also has a strong great Special Attack stat, which, even when it is running a defensive set, allows it to not be passive and deal respectable damage to its foes. Its STAB move, Discharge (RC) also lets it spread paralysis. It also provides crucial entry hazard removal support in the form of Defog, which allows it and its teammates to switch in and out more often. Due to its typing, Zapdos is able to take Electric-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Flying teams, as it only takes neutral damage. I'm just going to dump my opinion about this here and then leave it up to you if it's right since you're an official moderator.

Basically, when it says "Zapdos often fails to wall Choice Specs users", I assume that it implies that Zapdos can't wall special wallbreakers (specs) who can break through Zapdos' special bulk, and therefore emphasizing the choice specs. With this particular example, the sheer power of specs users compared to Zapdos' bulk isn't emphasized because it says Psychock. Psyshock hits the weaker defense stat, so of course it can't wall that. When talking about specs users, it means that they have a high SpA that is able to chunk a lot of SpD walls, so saying "Psychock variants of Meloetta" doesn't matter. Another example of a specs user that actually hits on the special side would be better I feel. If the Psychock is meant to be emphasized, then there's no point in saying specs since it causes misunderstanding. Basically, I assume that the writer is emphasizing choice specs users rather than Psyshock. Also, I didn't necessarily change anything because it's green for "comment", so this shouldn't matter anyway.[/quote]
