Resource Monotype OM Mega-Thread

Approved by Forum Mods

Welcome to the Monotype OM Mega-thread, a project to support and develop resources for the various Mono OMs!

"Mono OMs" are sub-metagames formed by combining Monotype, and it's restrictions, with those of other formats. These formats range from Other Metagames (such as Almost Any Ability) to standard tiers like Little Cup and Ubers. They are fun to build teams for, interesting to battle with, and entertaining to spectate. Most importantly, Mono OMs are a refreshing respite from the standard Monotype metagame. Because they are merely fragments of existing metagames, there are no ladders or official rankings/resources for Mono OMs, so matches are limited to personal challenges and room tournaments.

This project serves to support and cultivate these sub-formats by providing helpful resources, a platform for discussion, and a source of structure for Mono OMs and their player base

The Mono OMs this project currently supports include:

National Dex Monotype has its Forum with resources. Check it out here.

Doubles OU and CAP have been removed from the supported formats this generation as they lack overall interest and contribution. We might add them back in a future date if we get enough requests for them.

What is AAA?
AAA plays just like standard with a simple twist - your Pokemon can swap out their normal abilities for almost any ability of your choosing! (with a few exceptions)

Cool, so what is "Mono AAA"?
Simple, Mono AAA is exactly as it sounds, it is a combination of AAA and Monotype, where teams can utilize new abilities and must share a type.

General Rules, Mechanics and Usage Tips
  • Not all abilities are usable in AAA. See the full banlist here.
  • Mono AAA follows standard OU Clauses, as well as the Ability Clause, which limits teams to 2 of the same ability.
  • Because this is Monotype, as always, be sure to try to cover threats to your type as much as you can. Try to think outside the box beyond building a standard AAA team!

Banlist
Monotype AAA supports both Monotype Banlist and AAA banlist, with the addition of these bans/unbans.

Unbans: Buzzwole, Blaziken, Kyurem
Bans: Psychic Surge, Terrain Extender, Damp Rock, Triage, Noivern

Threatlist and Considerations
  • Tinted Lens and Adaptability are strong on almost any offensive Pokemon, while Sheer Force, Tough Claws, and Download are excellent on others.
  • -ate abilities such as Refrigerate, Aerilate, Galvanize, and Pixilate can be very potent on pokemon to provide strong STABs or additional coverage.
  • Magic Bounce, Regenerator, and Unaware are excellent abilities for almost any defensive Pokemon.
  • Abilities that grant immunities to certain types, such as Flash Fire, Volt Absorb / Lightningrod, Levitate, and Storm Drain / Water Absorb, are extremely effective on Pokemon weak to such types.
  • To counter the above abilities, Mold Breaker is an excellent ability, especially on Pokemon with a broad offensive capacity to make use of bypassing these immunities or using status moves through Magic Bounce.
  • Weather can be a very powerful tool for teams to build around, abusing improved weather setters and Chlorophyll, Sand Rush, or Swift Swim Sweepers.
  • Desolate Land and Primordial Sea, while not providing persistent weather for teammates to abuse, are both very strong abilities for both offensive and defensive Pokemon, granting an immunity that cannot be bypassed by Mold Breaker while also boosting certain attacks and overwriting opposing weather.
  • Terrain abilities along with Unburden + their respective seeds provide an improved offensive core for types.

What is monotype little cup?

It's a fun and unique metagame where you get to use baby Pokemon! Little Cup is a format where everyone Pokemon on your team needs to be the first evolution in their line, and they'll be battling at level 5. Additionally, because this is monotype every Pokemon on your team must share the same type. This introduces the fun challenge of building a team with severely limited Pokemon choices while trying to cover as many things as possible. On top of this, a fair amount of mechanics and playstyle work differently than they do in other tiers, so be sure to check out the tips!

General Rules, Mechanics and Usage Tips
  • Every Pokemon must be set to level 5, be the first evolution in a line of evolutions, and all must share the same type.
  • The most useful items are Eviolite, and Berry Juice. Other useful items include Choice Scarf and Life Orb in specific situations.
  • Knock Off is hands down the most threatening move in Little Cup, removing an opponent's Eviolite or Berry Juice severely hampers their Pokemon's defenses or ability to heal respectively.
  • Hazards such as Stealth Rock and Spikes are extremely important for ruining certain strategies such as Berry Juice + Sturdy on top of regular hazard benefits.
  • EVs work differently in Little Cup than in a standard tier. You cannot get away with running 252/252 EVs for your two most important stats. Make sure to use the sliders in the teambuilder to maximize your EVs.
  • Speed tiers are very narrow in Little Cup, be sure to check out the LC speed tiers when building your team and determining threats to your team.
  • Because this is monotype, as always, be sure to try to cover threats to your type as much as you can. Try to think outside the box beyond building a standard little cup team!
  • For more information about Little Cup in general, be sure to visit their forums here on Smogon.

Welcome to Mono Ubers, the tier of legends! In this tier, nearly all pokemon are usable. The team-building challenges that arise from trying to manage these threats make Ubers a very interesting tier, even more so in the context of monotype.

General Rules, Mechanics and Usage Tips

  • Because this is monotype, as always, be sure to try to cover threats to your type as much as you can. Try to think outside the box beyond building a standard Ubers team!
  • For more information about Ubers in general, be sure to visit their forums here on Smogon.
Banlist
Monotype Ubers follows the existing Ubers Banlist and Clauses.

What is Monotype STABmons?
First off, STABmons is a unique metagame where Pokemon may learn nearly any move that is the same type as them. Yes, it is exciting! There are nearly endless combinations and strategies to be developed as Pokemon has a much more diverse move pool. Meaning you can run Spectral Thief Mimikyu, Spore Rotom-Wash, and Dragon Ascent Corviknight as a few examples. Adding on Monotype to this OM leads to interesting developments. While every Pokemon on the team has access to the same type move pool, you should take care in utilizing Pokemons' secondary typing to maximize the niche of this OM.

General Rules, Mechanics, and Usage Tips
  • Pokemon can learn nearly any move that is their current typing (except for banned moves listed in the ban list section).
  • Pokemon can also learn moves from previous evolution's typing. For example, Vaporeon can learn normal type moves as Eevee is a Normal-type Pokemon. To expand on this, Pokemon that can alter forms freely in-game, such as Rotom, can learn moves of those typings.
  • Try to think outside of the box, while every Pokemon can learn much more powerful STAB attacks, there are tons of utility-oriented moves that can be run. For example, all Flying-type Pokemon can learn moves such as Defog and Roost. Another example would be all Grass-type Pokemon having access to Spore and Leech Seed.
  • For more general information on STABmons, feel free to check out its post in the OM Subforums

What is Monothreat?
Monothreat is the premier OM featured in Monotype exclusively. As the name suggests, it is a Monotype battle where both players use the same type. Given that both players are using the same type, they can build around very specific threats and run Pokémon that counter their own type. This leads to interesting developments, seeing Pokémon and sets be used that would not likely be seen otherwise in competitive Monotype play.

Monothreat Council:
Kev (Co-Leader)
Ticken (Co-Leader)
K3ppr
TonyFlygon
ToxaNex

General Rules, Mechanics, and Usage Tips
  • Examine all of your options in the team builder. Pokemon that are viable in Monothreat do not necessarily match up with those that are viable in standard Monotype.
  • Monothreat's team pool is very limited, meaning you can prepare for a small number of threats.
  • Obvious choices would be Pokemon that have attacks super effective against their own typing but try to think of out of the box sets that are useful against your own type.
  • Type damage-reduction berries are extremely useful in Monothreat. Pokemon will likely be mainly using attacks super effective against the type, therefore the berries can be strategically used to live certain attacks and KO your opponent back.
  • Each Monothreat type forms its own metagame within itself, effectively making 18 different metagames to play!
One important note, Monothreat will be running its own thread. I will add a link to this post once it's created. We will keep the metagame represented here but you will have to check that thread for the threat resources.

Banlist
Monothreat follows the standard SS Monotype ban list.

Sample Teams
There will not be any sample teams because the format itself is highly experimental and encourages people to test various different things.

What is Tier Shift?
Tier Shift is a metagame in which threats that normally wallow in the depths of lower tiers take centre stage! Step aside Keldeo, Dragapult and Clefable, its time for RU rejects, NU ne're-do-wells and the pits of PU to shine!

Mechanic: Pokemon get a +10 boost to each stat excluding HP per tier below OU they are in. UU gets +10, RU +20, NU +30, and PU +40.

Bans: Evolite + Monotype Banlist

Council
:dragapult: Attitude adjuster
:hitmonchan: ToxaNex
:glameow: Felines

Questions and Answers
Q: What about BLs?
A: BL's get boosts of the tier above them

Q: What do untiered NFE / LC pokemon get?
A: +40 as well, as they are still classed as PU

Q: Is there an easy way to see a pokemon's adjusted stats?
A: Why yes there is! Just use the command /ts (pokemon) and it will show you the new stats!

As it was requested by a fair demographic early-gen and it had acknowledged potential, National Dex Monotype is now an official Monotype OM! Its initial banlist is the same as National Dex OU's, therefore it has a long way to go before it gets to be a playable, balanced tier. Feel free to discuss its metagame and make posts about it from now on!

My thoughts on National Dex Monotype will remain the same as other OMs and the current metagame. Most of the metagame's types are being run over by Kyurem's Dragon Dance + Substitute BoltBeam set. A lot of types are still bopped by Kyurem-Black such as Poison, Flying, Ground, Water, Bug, and some other matchups I don't feel like searching. Of course, rocks such as Damp Rock and Smooth Rock should be banned because 8 turns of weather make weatherless teams struggle more! Reference
National Dex Monotype: [Ghost] Sample.

Ghost was most definitely not one of the top types last-gen, with the additions of Dragapult and Galarian Corsola, I feel like Ghost is more playable. Mega Sableye is useful for bouncing away status moves from Pokemon like Ferrothorn and Galvantula and Inflicting status onto Pokemon like Mega Gallade or Alolan Muk. Galarian Corsola provides move status moves such as Stealth Rock and recovery from Strength Sap. Mega Sableye + Corsola form a good defensive core for the entire team. Mimikyu is a staple on the team and is needed to beat the Dark Matchup and providing Wood Hammer which helps beat Pokemon like Seimitoad and Hippowdown. Blacephaleon is the Z-move sweeper which helps with Bisharp and the Steel Matchup. Ghost-Z on Blace helps do efficient damage onto Fire-Immune Pokemon like Heatran at +1. Gengar is useful for crippling Stall Pokemon like Toxapex, Chansey, and CurseLax with Trick and serving as a powerful wall-breaker with Choice Specs. Finally, the speed control of the team is Dragapult. Choice Scarf helps with outspeeding Dragapult at +1 along with ignoring annoying Screens + Substitute.

Click any of the sprites for the paste! Hope you enjoy the team :blobnom:

Dark

Notable new mons (Gen 8): Grimmsnarl, Nasty Plot Hydreigon
Notable returning mons (past gens): Greninja, Muk-Alola, Sableye-Mega, Sharpedo-Mega, Tyranitar-Mega
Favorable matchups: Fairy, Fire, Ghost, Psychic

In the early stages of the meta, Dark appears to be the greatest beneficiary of new meeting old, with the addition of Grimmsnarl making for a devastating offensive partnership alongside Mega-Tyranitar, who easily establishes itself as Mega of choice with Prankster screen support bolstering 100/150/188 defenses under sand. Not much else needs to be said. Greninja is Greninja, and A-Muk resumes fairy killing duties. Hydreigon (who now has Nasty Plot) becomes even more of a threat behind screens, and Mandibuzz retains its role as physical stopper and defensive utility, though there exists tremendous leeway for flex options in Bisharp, Krookodile, or any of Dark's alternate Mega options.

Ghost

Notable new mons (Gen 8): Corsola-Galar, Dragapult
Notable returning mons: Aegislash, Blacephalon, Sableye-Mega
Favorable matchups: Psychic, Steel

On paper, Ghost would appear well positioned for the transition into the National Dex meta, with a major defensive wincon (Corsola-G) and the ultimate speed control (Dragapult) forming the backbone of the strongest antimeta type in Gen 8 Monotype. In the National Dex meta, Ghost regains a number of toys that would make it a reasonable contender in the new metagame, with Blacephalon taking the reins from Chandelure,
and the return of M-Sableye providing desperately needed hazard control, as well as a safe switch-in to Knock Off. The reintroduction of a host of instabans powerful mons on Dark and Steel would also appear to make Bisharp less of a threat when teambuilding, allowing greater flexibility in Blacephalon sets.

In practice, however, Ghost does not fare especially well in the transition to the National Dex meta, as the ascendancy of Dark and the reintroduction of Heatran on Steel teams considerably weaken the type's overall viability. Though Corsola-G + M-Sableye presents an interesting, if not extremely annoying defensive partnership at first glance, the passivity of Corsola-G detracts from the get-them-before-they-get-you playstyle dictated by offensive threats such as Gengar, Dragapult, and Blacephalon. In addition Corsola-G now faces significant competition for a teamslot from the newly returned Marowak-A, who is more suited to providing rocks support on offensive builds, though Corsola still remains a perfectly valid option as an all-out defensive stopper. All-in-all, Ghost functions relatively unchanged from its current performance in Gen 8, punching holes with Gengar and Blacephalon while Dragapult acts as safety valve over the top.

Steel

Notable new mons (Gen 8): Corviknight, Duraludon
Notable returning mons: Metagross-Mega, Aegislash- Kartana, Magearna, Celesteela, Heatran, Klefki, Magnezone, Mawile-Mega, Scizor-Mega, Stakataka (TR)

Steel is balanced

Bug

Notable new mons: Centiskorch
Notable returning mons: Armaldo, Buzzwole, Fylkir Pudin, Heracross, Heracross-Mega, Pinsir-Mega, Scizor, Scizor-Mega, Volcarona
Other: Heavy-Duty Boots
Favorable matchups: Dark, Fairy (w/ Scizor-Mega), Ice, Psychic, Steel

Tied with Rock as the consensus worst type in SS Monotype, Bug receives a much-needed emergency facelift with the arrival of old friends from USUM, most notably the meta-defining Volcarona and S-rank utility mon Armaldo. The addition of Centiskorch provides Bug a long-wished for Fire immunity, providing greater flexibility and lessening the load on Armaldo to deal with/create opportunities to eliminate enemy Fire types, though it is largely outclassed by Araquanid on most builds. The biggest change for Bug, however, is not the introduction of a Fire immunity, but the arrival of a new staple item, Heavy Duty Boots, mitigating the type's critical Stealth Rock vulnerability as well as cementing Volcarona one of the all-around best mons in the tier. Blessed with a choice of the gamebreaking M-Pinsir and type-invalidating M-Scizor, Bug's noted offense is bolstered by familiar offensive threats in Buzzwole, Galvantula, and Scarf Heracross,

Though Bug retains the same weaknesses it has had since ORAS, namely linear offensive play and overdependency on Galvantula and Volcarona against a number of types, favorable matchups against Dark, Fairy, Ice, Psychic, Steel and a winnable one against Water means that while Bug is far from the best in the NatDex meta, should enjoy decent usage as an answer to the strongest types in the game.

I'm pretty sure Scizor alone means Ice probably gets discarded. Bug struggles with Dragon regardless of whether Kyu-B is present or not, and it's not too big a threat in that matchup either.

mega scizor can check it, but there isn't a mega scizor on every type :)

As they were unbanned in SM Monotype, the National Dex council decided to host its first vote today on whether to allow the introduction of Kyurem-Black, Landorus-Incarnate and Deoxys-Speed into the early stages of the tier. Results were as following:

1588819110511.png

Just like the screenshot above says, Kyurem-Black, Landorus-Incarnate, and Deoxys-Speed are now allowed in the OM. Keep in mind that revisiting them in later stages is completely plausible, but we thought allowing SM Monotype's reminiscent ubers would be a healthy move for now due to the meta having a way higher power creep than before. Feel free to share your thoughts on how will the unbans affect the metagame!

The council has voted on the first wave of bans. Smooth Rock, Damp Rock, Tapu Lele, Magearna, Hoopa-Unbound, and Zygarde 10% are now banned. Metagrossite, Ash-Greninja, and Kartana did not receive enough votes to be quick-banned; instead, they will go through more testing.

can the banlist be updated for these oms, it makes it a little easier as compared to going to an entire new post opening up another page then clicking the "go back" arrow to go to another tagged post

I’m here to spread the news! Monotype National Dex council has adjourned our second meeting. From this meeting, the council voted and Kartana and Ash-Greninja are banned from the tier. Also up for voting was Mawilite and Metagrossite; neither of which received enough votes for a quick-ban. Mawilite and Metagrossite will both receive suspect tests in the future to determine their fate.
