Project Monotype Teambuilding Workshop

Hello all, I would like to request a mono steel team centered around aegislash.

Since steel has been regarded as the strongest defensive typing and aegislash is my favourite pokemon I'd love to have a team centred around them, personally I prefer the more defensive movesets for them especially in this format, however I've struggled to find acceptable team mates for it that synergise well, especially since I know the pokemon is rarely used nowadays. If anyone has any good suggestions and doesn't want to create an entire team sheet I'm happy to accept pokemon suggestions and I will create movesets. Thanks in advance !

Edit: Just realised aegislash is banned... I would like to change my pokemon of choice to be an excadrill if possible, where in this case they'd be closer to a set-up sweeper

This is National Dex Monotype since Aegislash isn't available in gen 9. You should check out the Natdex sample thread as it would likely have what you are looking for: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...-sample-teams-ver-2-submissions-open.3733806/

Requesting a rock team around Coalossal + Rhyperior
https://pokepast.es/4378de1006c934a1
I think Rhyp is hard to fit in monotype, is niche according to me would be is ground type, ability and general good HP and Att. Coalossal is Scizor and other physical attackers check + Spinner. I went sandless rock since Exca is way too free otherwise against rock.
We're using Glimmora with balloon to have a ground immunity to set up hazards and mess gently with special damages. Ogerpon is a must have and we are using a anti ground and water set here with trailblaze as last move since you want to have a chance and Coalossal + Rhyp + Glimm can help with steel mons. Boulder is our necessary scarf to help with dark and general speed control. Diancie TR is our dragon killer.

Requesting a mono flying team around Flamigo. Figured Scrappy would be a cool team against the Steel and even Dragon MU for flying. Once again the archetype doesn’t matter so go crazy!!
https://pokepast.es/d8dc8ed6f14eb892
Kinda offensive flying with double scarf. Flamigo is cool ! Spdef Corvi defog + Def Gliscor is a nice combo, Gyara is here to help with physical ice and water moves and also gives a nice wincond against ground. Dnite is here to help to break and gives a nice priority to the team.

Thank you so much I love this team!!

Hello I’d like to request a team with the core member being band meowscarada with protean. Please make the team counter some of the current best types in the meta (dragon, ghost, water and so on)

Hello could I ask for a Ghost team focused around either Ceruledge or Skeledirge? A heavy offensive team would be grand. Thank you in forward!

Hi, can I request a Fire team that can make Typhlosion (either form) shine? I'd also like pon in it, and if possible Arcanine-H.
If Typh is really really Unviable, then an Ogerpon + Arcanine-H team. Thanks in advance.

Same as before in Sample Teams thread, certified as a sample, this is a team I've built during Winter Seasonal based on Ceruledge. I do not believe in Skeledirge in this actual meta and it would go more balance than Hyper Offense.

Both Typhlosion are unranked in VRs so we won't do a team for it since it doesn't follow teambuilding workshop.
Ogerpon-H is in most fire team since it is an awesome breaker. You can check Sample Teams thread.

With Arcanine-H, I'd be tempted to go that way https://pokepast.es/8d00fb0b6f97f600.

Scarf Typhlosion Sun Fire
https://pokepast.es/19660d9c4af32c7e
Standard Sun Fire build with a scarf typhlosion tacked on. Originally had a specs moth over Typhlosion on this build. Scarf typhlosion would be the only viable way to use it in mono as specs is just outclassed by other faster special attackers on fire (such as iron moth). We’re running the classic scarf eruption spam + sun combo with heat rock sun support from torkoal. Blaze over frisk because if we take damage and we’re too low to click eruption, we now have the option to click blaze boosted Fire Blasts. We’re running Encore on Ogerpon as a make shift check to setup Pokemon like ceruledge that could be an issue for our team. The ev’s on heatran live a banded knock off (pop the balloon) into another knock off from Meowscarada from full hp always. Volcarona outspeeds dragapult after a quiver dance.

Thanks, I used this (or at least one with the same 6) team before Gouging Fire release, but lost it.
And sorry for requesting something that didn't follow the teambuilding workshop.

But thanks so much for this, really appreciate it.
I knew this set may be the only viable set for typh here, but don't have enough experience to know which 5 to put it with, this feels good so far.
You guys are da best

Requesting a water team built around Dondozo + Kingdra
Don King
:pelipper: :Dondozo: :Kingdra: :toxapex: :samurott-hisui: :gastrodon:
https://pokepast.es/be1ede4ca8cabc54
Building this team around Dondozo and Kingdra was interesting. Two mons used on completely different archetypes put on the same team. When putting together the team, I didn’t feel too good about it. But after playing some test games, my initial thoughts on the team changed in favor of the squad.

:pelipper: Put on the sample set for this and it generally has worked out. Although, there’s a few instances where I wished I had Weather Ball or Ice Beam over Knock Off. However, Knock Off has been an overall good slot.

:Dondozo: The Don is a massive obstacle for a number of mons. Gliscor, Dragonite, Urshifu, etc. have a tough time getting through. Being SpD allows you to scare off Scarf Lando I and such. I went with the RestTalk Curse but you could use a set with more utility like Def Dozo with Body Press/Avalanche. Or dropping Sleep Talk for Body Press or Avalanche with Waterfall.

:Kingdra: Opted for more coverage in using Ice Beam over Dragon Pulse since 2 Draco’s does more than 2 Dragon Pulse. Not too often you’ll sit there and spam DPulse for more than 2 turns. You could use Flip Turn for more momentum as well if you prefer it. Weather Ball for a move that hits harder than Surf and more accurate than Hydro Pump. Hurricane to make the Fighting matchup easier and to OHKO all Ogerpon (except Cornerstone but Weather Ball OHKOs it anyway when Sturdy is broken).

:toxapex: Standard Def Pex, kinda need it or else your TSpikes encounter rate increases by 650%. Also can swap the attacking move to what you want. I prefer Toxic but TSpikes always works too since it pairs well with Pelipper’s Knock Off.

:samurott-hisui: Opted for Sam-H over Greninja for more setup and hazard stacking. Also, having a Sucker Punch helps against annoying fast threats that are frail.

:gastrodon: Went with Gastro to absorb weak Knock Offs from things like Goodra and Gliscor, etc. I like Swampert’s pivoting and option of having Knock Off but Gastro is extra recovery and helps scout special choice item users’ used move.

I decided to test against what I believed to be the big 5 types in the meta atm. Dragon, Flying, Steel, Dark, and Ground. All the matchups were more playable than I originally thought. I’ll briefly summarize how each matchup went.
  • Tested against Raging Bolt Dragon to make it a harder test and it’s a really tight game. Gastro being able to lead and scout choice user moves with Recover helped a lot and absorbing Goodra’s Knock Off. Sam-H can clean up if the variant has Latias as the scarf over Moon.

  • Flying was a fairly easier matchup with Kingdra applying pressure to non-Water resists and Gastro switching into everything Torn throws. Dondozo keeps things like Dnite and Gyara at bay. Same with Scarf Lando. Only Articuno variants would dent the team greatly.

  • Steel is a patient game, can’t force the Steel player to think as much with Goodra/Arch/Skarm being in the way. This is a game where Gastro can soften a lot of things for Sam-H to clean up.

  • Dark was a MU I felt was doomed until I realized Kingdra breaks it in half when you have rocks and a spike down.

  • Ground v Water, weather war. This is a matchup that can go either way depending on your skill. Kingdra + Sam-H putting in major work. Another MU where I sorta wished I had Weather Ball on Pelipper.
You can play passive or aggressive with this team. Tweak it as you like.

I need a good water/ground team with whiscash. (I like whiscash)
My plan for whiscash is dragon dance, liquidation, earthquake, and stone edge. You can give it any item and I probably wont care.
pls help my boy whiscash

Hello, I would like to request a team with Deoxys Defense. I’ve noticed it still ranks C in viability, and it would be interesting to build a team around that Pokémon, as I used it a lot in Generation 8, and I would like to use it again in this current generation. Since this Deoxys is a defensive Pokémon, it might fit well in a defensive Psychic monotype, but I’m not here to limit the teambuilding; it’s just a suggestion.

And again, thank you for the teams I received here; they all worked wonderfully.

it works well as trick room setter since its the only one with trick room + teleport!

hey yall, i LOVE the idea of this thread, massive mono fan here and i am teeeeerrible hahaha.

I just wana find a mono team i can rock with but atm i've been focusing poison
core of team, Alolan Muk, Overquill, Weezing
- Muk is committed SpWall with assault vest, only weak to ground
- Overquill is committed PhWall, intimidate helps lower oncoming PhAtk, only weak to ground
- Weezing has levitate, only weak to psychic

if i make the right call i can get a free switch to whoever is the right guy (hard though i deffs belong in low elo, i can admit to that haha)

last 3 spots have been toxapex, veno, and last slot im constantly shuffling hoping i find the ONE secret piece that will help me (atm has been Glimmora for corrosion against steel)

i would rather a team without legendries, mythic or relying on the generational gimmicks like terastilize, gigantamax or mega (lol i know, im shooting myself in the foot)

i know this is a tall order haha, im just happy honestly even to be chatting about this. much love to anyone who does decide they'll try talking sense into my stubborn head

Been thinking on this team for awhile. I’ve had your team built since Monday and have been tweaking and testing it. I finally came to a version that feels satisfying enough to play around with.

:deoxys-defense: Deoxys has access to a move that many mons do not: Teleport. Probably the next best pivoting only second to Baton Pass. I opted to make Deo-D a physical wall to form a decent core with Slowking and Hoopa. Stealth Rock helps speeds games up a bit and Boots helps Deo-D come in more often if hazards get put down. Night Shade is better overall than Seismic Toss since it’s non-contact so you don’t have to worry about Baneful Bunker or Rocky Helmet shenanigans.

:slowking-galar: So, I had 4MSS with this because I originally had Chilly Reception for double pivoting with Deoxys. Would have also helped with remove weather from Ground, Rock, and Water teams as well. However, I decided to swap to Ice Beam instead to be able to hit things like Landorus or Gliscor if needed. Sludge Bomb to help with some key Fairy and Grass types like Valiant, Ogerpon, or Meowscarada. You wouldn’t hit them with Sludge Bomb often but when you do, it makes the game a bit easier. The poison chance is good too. Toxic Spikes to also help speeds games up. Not many people expect Slowking to lay down TSpikes, the usual assumption is AV.

:hoopa-unbound: The other Special wall, but of the offensive kind. Hoopa has all the coverage you need to punch holes through many teams and would be one of the main targets for Healing Wish support. With the right predictions, you break the Steel core. It helps soften the blows from Shadow Ball spam mons like Dragapult and Flutter Mane. With Slowking, it does make it harder for Flutter to choose between Moonblast and Shadow Ball.

:iron-boulder: I originally ran an SD Boulder set inspired by Neko since it does feel like Boulder doesn’t have to be bound to Scarf. But for this team specifically, SD felt just a tad bit off. There were a few Dark games that were lost because I wasn’t Scarf and Darkrai would click Dark Pulse twice because I wasn’t faster. Boulder tanks 1 Dark Pulse and kills in return with 2 Mighty Cleaves.

:hatterene: Hatterene is the one that will save a lot of games from defeat. The only thing that keeps it from breaking Flying is usually Sludge Wave from Lando and/or Iron Head from Corv. Mystical Fire helps get through Skarm and other Steel types but it can be swapped out for other moves like Nuzzle or Trick Room. Item choice can be flexible as well. Could use Boots for one of the weakness berries like Kasib/Babiri. I personally like using Kee Berry to boost Def by +1.

:Latias: Your speed control, your crippler on walls by using Trick, your Healing Wish support, also a Fire and Water resist. Latias will help your wincon stay alive. Could also use Jirachi or Indeedee for Healing Wish. I mainly thought having a Fire/Water resist fit better.

Man, thank you so much for the team! Yes, SD Boulder is good, but Scarf is great for dealing with SD Weavile and Darkrai, which are significant threats in this team. I've been testing it recently in 8 matches, and it has been very helpful. It's definitely a fun team to use.

here's my go at it, basically a hazard stack team that uses pecharunt to spinblock

maybe its better to go life orb on pecha and baloon on glimm, but i don't know if it does enough to ko gholdengo still...

from my few games of testing i will say weezing is unexpectedly good into a lot of teams!
might even be better to have toxic instead of tspikes

THANK U SO MUCH! im so keen to give this a whirl!! I can't express enough my gratitude that u took time out of ur day to help a stranger with my needlessly difficult request

and YES about Weezing, i to was surprised the first time he was able to take a hit & bring a victory for me! I was running him with stockpile, rest, chesto berry & lemme tell ya after 3 stockpiles my main man had over 900 Def! i got a whole new love for Weezing now (might consider him my ace were I a gym leader) and yeah I feel the meta is really sleeping on him. More love for my Gaston !

Thank you again endall! much love

Aspiring ghost specialist here! Does anyone have any good sets for a team I could make outa; Gengar, Golurk, Trevenant, Chandelure, Basculegion & Cofagrigus/Runerigus

If this is no good/too limiting I'm happy to switch all of them if needed, other ghost poke i love are:
Dusclops, Spiritomb, Shedinja, Mimikyu, HZoroark, Drifblim, Palossand, Sableye, Decidueye, HTyphlosion, Skeledirge, AMarowak, Rotom, Houndstone, Aegislash

[EDIT] didn't want to weigh down this post with too much info but, incase this helps, a few ideas

Iron fist assult vest max Atk Golurk with: Ice/Shadow/Drain punch & EQ
reasoning: great coverage, some sustain in drain punch, great damage (shadow punch is even boosted by STAB & ability)
(this idea is so obvs I'm sure other have tried it, in my limited experience this was pretty cool)

Sitrus Harvester Trevenant with: sunny day, curse, leech seed, substitute (this actually from the internet)
reasoning: from behind the safety of sub, condemn opponents to a 4-5 turn KO unless they switch?
(only tried this once & it was satisfying, not sure on EV spread though & i feel there is SO much u can do with this guy)

max SpAtk charcoal Chandelure with: Shadow ball, Over heat, haze, pain split
reasoning: few resist SB STAB + might drop SpDef, item boosted STAB OH to capitalize, haze to reset, some sustain in pain split?
(rest of EV's into speed??)

Max wall Cofagrigus (this one i used for my omega ruby run years back)
Max HP, EV & nature such that equally tanky on both sides
iron def to be a PhAtk pain
calm mind to become a Sp threat
Dark pulse to hit everything
i use to run rest with chesto after all the set up BUT
if u pain split instead, no need to give opponent free turns + left overs???

also also, Haunter has 3 immunities! i figure there MUST be potential here but i just keep misusing him hard (very newbie to competitive)
max speed + choice scarf + trick = lock down an opponents mon? maybe but so far i keep getting owned
(i hope this is just due to my newbness & once i have a better idea of other mon i'll see when & how to pull this off)

but again not married to ANY of these ideas, i can toss them all haha, just want to put up at least a good fight with my ghouls

Last edited:
........ so i ran a few different ideas, i am in dire need from someone with more experience hahaha

ill try not to bog it down too much but i tried

Dusclops: Night shade, Curse, pain split/rest, protect
the plan:
eviolite clops is a UNIT! lets drop curses to deal fixed damage & force set up sweeps to switch
the reality:
im suprised how often people choose not to switch, curse takes out up to 2 mon with alarming regularity.
however i never seem to time my rest's/pain splits right to keep clops going
maybe i should just drop curse?
clops is almost always guaranteed to go last

Drifblim: Stockpile, Substitute, Curse, Rest
the plan:
if i can safely sit behind a sub, i can hopefully set up max stockpile, curse all non norm from behind sub, restore insane HP pool
the reality:
despite hes huge HP pool and double def investment, im just not pulling this plan off, i think failure is just my knowledge
only got taunted once BUT that is obvs a clear concern, fully shuts this Drifblim down

Trevenant: Shadow Claw, Horn Leech, Will-O-Wisp, Rest
the plan:
rest + lum berry harvest = perfect sustain (rest even cancles status), horn leech for an attack that ALSO sustaines, will-o for PhAtkers
the reality:
again just not pulling this off and i can't pinpoint my failure to anything other than just my inexperience

Mimikyu: Bulk Up, Shadow Sneak, Play Rough, Drain Punch
the plan:
set up bulk ups then drop as much damage as possible
the reality:
again user error, i just can't keep him alive. I've tried mucking about with EV spreads but nothing seems to work
Max atk & speed have yielded best results i guess but, maybe i make him a full SpWall? then bulk up boosts he's phyicals???

I also have tried the iron fist Golurk above, despite hes great move coverage im always only ever hitting EQ or drain punch
if i invest more into hes SpDef with assult vest, perhaps can squeeze out more turns with him? he is SLOW though

i do love playing with my fav type, but this one million loose streak im on is starting to get to me hahaha

any advice on shedinja? i feel like knock off is insanely common and, i suspect its going to require a master level of prediction & game knowledge i just dont have this moment (and honestly might not haha competitive is a whole different beast)

Speedy and offensive Water team built around urshifu rapid pls
I feel like i've been wiped out a THOUSAND times by this exact team haha, I'm far from a pro, but heres wat iv seen

Damp rock Drizzle u-turn Pelipper
- also ALWAYS see this rockin roost, whirlwhind & the thunder move that have perfect accuracy in rain, so its not JUST a lead
- even if ur not using it to fight, it just has to TOUCH the field to set rain up again

max speed choice item Barraskewda
- ALWAYS has flip turn to deal decent chip damage while pivoting
- can't remember other moves but this thing hits like a truck

Urshifu (for the record i hate this mon, it's clearly OP, it takes no creativity to use, and it just ignored protect)
- surging strikes
- thunder punch
- drain punch?
- i think sometimes i'v seen them with a status boost like bulk up? hard to say, u RARELY have to select anything other than the move that deals guaranteed hits & can't be blocked
- item no clue but props choice specs or scarf? maybe mystic water?
- EV's i assume just go max attack & speed??

uuuum i've seen a lot of araquinid but they may have been on mono bug not water
- dropping a sticky web will damn near garantee u out speed, opponent will have to switch to a defogger or spinner

and yeah can't remember the last 2, maybe belly drum, aqua jet Azumaril?
- Aqua jet Moxie Gyarados?? Aqua jet Sharpedo/Crawdunt?

Not high speed but Adaptability life orb Aqua jet crawdunt hits so hard
