Project Monotype Victim of the Week [INDEX]

Cycle 20

Stakataka @ Rockium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Lonely Nature
IVs: 15 Def / 0 Spe
- Stone Edge
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Trick Room

Stakataka is among the most initially underrated Pokemon to arrive in USUM. With its great bulk it typically isn't difficult for it to find an opportunity to set up Trick Room. Under Trick Room, nothing in the metagame is capable of both underspeeding and being able to KO Stakataka at the same time. This would normally lead to reliance on defensive counterplay, which is also difficult to find thanks to Beast Boost increasing its Attack with each kill, and not many Pokemon resisting its coverage.

Taking Alakazam (Psychic), Porygon2 (Normal) and Ferrothorn (Steel).

Psychic Check

Alakazam @ Focus Sash
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Def
- Counter
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball

Alakazam checks Stakataka in a pretty simple way: once Alakazam gets in front of Stakataka via U-turn or after a teammate's been KOed, Stakataka cannot OHKO it (even with Hazards up due to Magic Guard) while, in return, Alakazam can OHKO it back with either Focus Blast (which will hurt the opposing switch-in if the opponent does switch Stakataka out) or Counter (preferable to use if you don't trust FB's shaky accuracy or if you know your opponent won't switch Stakataka out).
252+ Atk Stakataka Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Alakazam: 334-394 (133 - 156.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
(not sure I really needed a calc for this, but whatever)

252 SpA Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Stakataka: 532-628 (163.1 - 192.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
(also, using Counter after Stakataka brings it to 1HP will result in a 500HP damaging move, which swiftly OHKOes it)

Normal Counter

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Discharge
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Fire
- Recover

Not the usual P2 set, but I'm growing more and more fond of it. Seriously though, due to its crazy physical bulk, P2 is one of the few mons that completely counter Stakataka in and out of TR. Indeed, Stakataka's Continental Crush deals just a bit more than 50% on the six highest rolls to P2, and Gyro Ball isn't even a guaranteed 3HKO from full (meaning Normal teams don't have to worry of tanking Stakataka's hits at +1 since it'ill never get there as long as P2 is still healthy). In return, P2 can stall TR turns with Recover and slowly wear Stakataka down with Discharge, which will eventually 4HKO it (Download will boost it's SpAtk).
252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (125 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 117-138 (31.2 - 36.8%) -- 71.6% chance to 3HKO
252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 139-165 (37.1 - 44.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (if paralyzed)
252+ Atk Stakataka Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 168-198 (44.9 - 52.9%) -- 25.8% chance to 2HKO
(even though Gyro Ball + CC can mathematically 2HKO P2 after SR, this scenario is totally unrealistic: the Stakataka user needs both TR and P2 switching into one of these moves. The thing is, P2 will have switched into it as it activates TR or as it uses one of its other moves, letting P2 use Recover and avoid the 2HKO without any trouble)

+1 0 SpA Porygon2 Discharge vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Stakataka: 89-105 (27.3 - 32.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Steel Counter

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 SpD
Careful Nature
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Spikes / Stealth Rock / Knock Off

Ferrothorn's bulk, typing, ways of recovery and looooooooooooow speed are all useful aspects that help it counter Stakataka. As a matter of fact, Stakataka's Continental Crush deals no more than 40% to Ferrothorn and Earthquake is only a POSSIBLE 5HKO with Protect taken into account (but not Leech Seed, which means it'll probably take forever for Stakataka to KO Ferrothorn). In return, Ferrothorn, slowly but surely KOes Stakataka with Power Whip And Leech Seed.
252+ Atk Stakataka Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 72 Def Ferrothorn: 90-107 (25.5 - 30.3%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Stakataka Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 72 Def Ferrothorn: 121-143 (34.3 - 40.6%) -- 48.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Stakataka: 73-87 (22.3 - 26.6%) -- 19.2% chance to 4HKO

Dragon Hard check

Kommo-o @ Kommonium Z
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Clanging Scales
- Flamethrower
- Flash Cannon

Bullet proof gives kommo-o an immunity to gyro ball and coupled with komm-o’s respectable 125 base defense kommo-o switches in every time and ohkos with close combat.

252 Atk Kommo-o Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Stakataka: 372-444 (114.1 - 136.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

I'll submit 2 checks:

Ice Check

1513047575814.png

Piloswine @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 248 HP / 140 Atk / 120 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock

Piloswine can come in directly on the turn Stakataka clicks Trick Room, survives any unboosted hit from full health, and can always KO back with an Earthquake:

252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (109 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Piloswine: 318-374 (78.9 - 92.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Stakataka Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Piloswine: 262-309 (65 - 76.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
140+ Atk Piloswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Stakataka: 328-388 (100.6 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Rock Check

1513047945063.png

Rhyperior @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch
- Ice Punch

Pretty self-explanatory, the most Stakataka can do is a Gyro Ball at +1, but the Speed difference isn't very monumental, so it won't be doing much. Meanwhile, Rhyperior will always KO back with an Earthquake:

+1 252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (93 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 226-267 (52.1 - 61.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
8 Atk Rhyperior Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Stakataka: 348-412 (106.7 - 126.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Dark Check:

Krookodile @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

While the premise of this set is more of a suicide lead, it fares pretty nicely vs. Stakataka in a 1v1. Taunt ensures that TR doesn't go up while Intimidate lowers its damage output, and EQ is an near OHKO that's pretty much guaranteed after prior chip from there.

252 Atk Krookodile Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Stakataka: 312-372 (95.7 - 114.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Krookodile Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Stakataka: 328-388 (100.6 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO (w/ the 15 Defense IV's)

Electric Hard Check:

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 220 HP / 200 Def / 88 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Resistance to Gyro Ball, natural immunity to EQ and it being unaffected by Trick Room makes this one of Staka's best defensive checks. Burn it w/ Wisp to cripple damage output and it's basically turned useless.

0 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Stakataka: 246-290 (75.4 - 88.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Stakataka Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 220 HP / 200+ Def Rotom-Wash: 211-250 (71.2 - 84.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Reserving Heatran (Fire/Steel)

Fire/Steel Check

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Toxic
- Taunt

Trapper Heatran can take either of Stakataka’s attacks at +1 and always OHKO with Earth Power. (This does require Heatran’s Air Balloon to be unpopped, as Earthquake will OHKO it.) However, Heatran on Steel won’t get worn down too much when facing Rock or Steel, and Heatran on Fire can be saved fairly easily when facing Rock or Steel if Stak is on the other team.

+1 252 Atk Stakataka Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 258-304 (79.8 - 94.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 96-114 (29.7 - 35.2%) -- 19.9% chance to 3HKO

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Stakataka: 388-460 (119 - 141.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Dragon Check

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 248 HP / 168 Def / 92 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock

Even though HO drag has been ruling over and gained even more attention after the release of naganadel, still the old balanced archetypes which preferred to run garchomp as defensive wall are able to easily counter this new beast.

252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Garchomp: 219-258 (52.2 - 61.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Stakataka: 324-384 (99.3 - 117.7%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (106 BP) vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Garchomp: 154-183 (36.7 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Stakataka: 312-372 (95.7 - 114.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO with rocky helmet)
You forgot to change Stakataka's IVs in the damage calculator (15 Def / 0 Spe), making its Gyro Ball much stronger and Garchomp's Earthquake a tad stronger:

252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Garchomp: 219-258 (52.2 - 61.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Stakataka: 324-384 (99.3 - 117.7%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

Now, Garchomp can't afford to freely switch on it too much as Gyro Ball 2HKOes (definitely not a counter, but a check for sure).

Pyukumuku @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Soak
- Block
- Recover

Thanks to being granted access to Block in USUM, Pyukumuku has become a more desirable option for Water teams, capable of trapping, Soaking, and wearing down troublesome threats with Toxic. Additionally, with Unaware, it's capable of completely ignoring and stopping setup sweepers as well. However, it does suffer against Taunt users, as well as wallbreakers strong enough to break past it.

Deadline: 12/29

Taking Heatran (Fire and Steel) and probably something else. I'll edit the post later.

Fire / Steel Counter

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe (if Fire) or 28 Atk / 224 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe (if Steel)
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon (if Fire) / Stone Edge (if Steel)
- Taunt

Taunt completely invalidates Pyukumuku's strategy as it's forced to Struggle once it's Taunted. Heatran, being part Steel-type, can also freely switch into Pyukumuku's Toxics without any negative impact.

Dark / Ghost Counter

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD
Careful Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Knock Off
- Recover
- Protect

M-Sableye's Magic Bounce bounces back anything that Pyukumuku has to throw at it. Toxic can even replce one of M-Sableye's moves to completely shut Pyukumuku down.

Sorry this took so long. Internet hiatus during the holidays.

Sprites will come soon. Done.

Edit: Messed up M-Sab's ability in the description.

Pyuku is a pure water type; why are Ice and Fairy not allowed as far as cores go?
Ice has a wide variety of Pyukumuku answers thanks to Freeze Dry from Ninetales and Fusion Bolt from Kyurem-Black. Two of Fairy's premier offensive options, Tapu Koko and Tapu Bulu, both shut Pyukumuku down. Not really worth including these types when Pyukumuku's fairly useless against them.
