Mosh pits

There will always be two opinions towards mosh pits I think. Some see it as a good way to enjoy the presence of live metal music and to burn energy and adrenaline. Others will see it as a pointless practice of senseless violence for complete idiots.

While it's important to have fun at concerts and such, it's also important to look out for the safety of others. I believe that participants in mosh pits follow an "un-written code of conduct" to ensure the safety of others, stuff like helping up a person on the ground in a pit. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As for me, I like the pits when I'm really high and full of energy, but I always find a quiet place where I can just stand and enjoy the music.

So true. I'm a completely different person at hardcore shows, once that adrenaline begins to flow and take over it's a feeling that is really unrivaled.

I had my knee gashed open at a Dropkick Murphys show. It was the band before them, and a few songs in I got bored and started slamdancing. Apparently someone behind me didn't like it (I wasn't within 4 feet of anyone) and I got pushed in the back into some jerkoff with chains and shit hanging from his shorts. Tore my shorts and my knee.

Some dude in the pit found a bandana on the ground, so I tied it around my knee and went back in. Stories like that, man, you just don't get at any old show.

Its shit like that that keeps me away from bigger bands shows. I just feel like there are red necks all around me who just want to hurt people instead of just go with the flow. The worst thing that has ever happend to me was ether just gettin hit really fucking hard in the head at and Earth Crisis show or in the face with a guitar ( wasn't dancing ) at a Blacklisted show.

At First Blood/Hatebreed I saw a kids nose cartilage get separated from the bone. I will never forget that.

mosh pits in england are fine, if you fall down you get pulled back up immediately, nobody is out to hurt anyone - fortunately chavs dont like metal

love pitting! I disagree with Jackal and not being able to enjoy the music...when I hear a song I love I get pumped up so I have to go into the pit! That's the fun of them; stay away until your favourite songs come on and then have a good fucking time!

ok considering slayer is next week I'd like to revive this topic from the dead. I'm considering using a balcony if it's there (5,000 venue, it might have one.)

Does anyone know of "safe areas" during a pit? Then again it's Slayer, so...

Pits generally form right behind the front of the crowd. If you're pressed up against the fence in front, or within 3-5 rows of the fence, you should be all right. Also, they tend to be right in the middle, so if you're off to one of the sides you should be safe as well. But to be quite honest, a pit can break out anywhere at anytime, so keep your head on a swivel. The further back from the stage you are, the safer you'll be.

The concept of a 'mosh pit' is so twisted here in Finland. I mean, the people want to start a pit in every fucking gig. They don't really get the whole idea of letting out the aggression that the music gives you.

Last summer I was at a Paramore gig (it was a larger festival with multiple artists, the largest one in Finland in fact) and some the guys next to me started forming a pit right there in the first few rows. I mean, what the fuck. It's Paramore for God's sake and there were girls aged under 15 right next to these idiots. Luckily the security broke the thing down because it was definitely not appropriate.

During the same festival my friend got accidentally into a pit at a Serj Tankian gig that formed around all of a sudden. He was absolutely wasted at that time and got hammered pretty hard in there because the people obviously didn't know that people aren't supposed to get hurt (at least not badly) in pits.

I don't know what are 'suitable' bands/artists for in pit according to the general opinion but there's got to be a borderline that shouldn't be crossed. Some people just can't keep in their minds that other people want to enjoy the gig in a different way - not bashing their sweaty bodies against countless others.

metal and hardcore shows generally get the pits because they are loud, fast and intense and there's not much else you can do in the form of dancing with such tempos

I saw Slayer at Reading a couple years back and to be honest it was mainly drunken dads :P But of course there were big pits all over the place...you couldn't really escape them!

Not sure if this was a reply to my post, but anyways.. I'm aware of where pits generally form at but I hope you don't take Paramore and Serj Tankian as metal or hardcore or pit-worthy in any case because that was my main point there.

Serj Tankian I can semi get because of the SoaD background (though he isn't metal anymore.)

Paramore is just lol
