can I rng abuse for the starter pokemon in Pearl?
I asked this not too long ago. The answer i received was that the only way to abuse for starters is to find a spread on frame one (or whatever frame you are on when selecting your starter). This is because there is no way to advance the frame that early in the game. You can't advance using the journal because you wouldn't have any pages with caught Pokemon on them.

@ sandman: What do you mean "got x Pokemon"? Do you mean received or caught?

no it says "Got Abra"

Nah, it says something in addition to that. Anyhow ...

Directly from the OP:

Journal Flipping - Opening the Journal, or having it automatically open, when there is a caught or defeated Pokémon on the first page advances the RNG by 2. There are a number of formats for the caught Pokémon text. Those listed below have been verified to advance the RNG.

'Caught a female BIDOOF.'
'Caught AZELF (LATE NIGHT).'
'UXIE was caught (DAY).'
'Defeated a male BIDOOF.'

Flipping to a page in the journal where a caught or defeated Pokémon is listed advances the RNG by 2. The same message formats listed above will advance the RNG.

In RNG Reporter, what do the functions !=, HP, HP_E, and HP_O mean?
The rest are easy, but these ones get me.

EDIT: Oh wow, does HP_E just find me an even number that isn't a multiple of 4?

NVM my previous posts I got it.... 5059 target frame wtf! 1 walk / turn followed by 2529 journal flips will do, correct?

sorry for repeating myself... just want a confirmation since when I got the coin flip sequence correct and went through all of the journal flips I ended up getting a Quirky Heatran D8<; I could've most likely miscounted, but I want to make sure.

Hmm, you don't have to do 1 step/turn since there aren't wild pokemon in heatran's cave.
So (as long as you don't have roaming pokemon):

5059-1(monster frame)=5058
5058/2=2529 diary flips

Ohhh okay... see THAT was the mistake. I figured that Heatran's throne is just like the other part of the stark mountain where wild Magcargo and Golbat would pop up.

Gah, unfortunately, I have 1 roaming Pokemon, so the frame is odd... that means I need to do the annoying 128 steps and only have 5 pokemon with me ...right?

Thanks for your answer Red_Phoenix!!!

While I'm posting, I am just wondering whether or not accidentally screwing up the two alternating journal page flips would screw up the frame count. For example, I would accidentally double-click and flip an extra journal entry without any "caught/defeated pokemon" description. May I still ignore this flip, return to the journal page with "caught/defeated pokemon" and count that flip as +1 frame?? or do I have to re-start everything?

You may ignore any pages without caught/defeated pokemon and resume counting as normal when you do flip to pages with those pokemon.

This is just a piece of random speculation I developed over the holidays, but I'm wondering if it could be put to use somehow:

Most of the searches conducted are in the 600-620 delay bracket. It my be interesting to investigate how waiting before pressing the "continue" button alters the delays, and whether usefull spreads are available outside this bracket. I noticed that the maximum delay on the applet is 999, and while this may merely be the mechanic of the applet, if there is a maximum delay in the RNG of the game itself, that might lend itself to some more efficient exploitation.

My knowledge of this area of mathematics is limited and I'm not sure how this could be tested, but it might present some valuable oppertunities.

This is already known. Waiting to press continue raises your delay. RNGreporter can find delays past 999 if searching for seed by IV's. Their is no limit for delay.

Mingot Edit: There are two guides on the first page for hitting high delays. Check those out.

I just want to make sure this is right before I mess it up..
So, to rng abuse the birds, I save in front of Oak and hit my delay, do the flips, then I talk to him and he releases the birds. I catch one of them, and faint the other two. Then i save in front of oak and do all the steps again to catch the next one?
Is that all right?

I only have one shiny pokemon and that is a duskull I bred via masuda method. i haven't encountered a Wild shiny since GSC. How can I find my SID without having captured a wild shiny or chaining 4-8?

Instead of asking, try testing it yourself. A lot easier, faster, and less post count ++

Should be normal 1 increase
Well, I did just that.
First time, I assumed it to be 2.
I hit my delay, did my journal flips, and then like a retard hit Y to open the journal again (of course my open page is a advancer)
Shit. Well, I scent and capture. I find it on frame 592, and my target was 590. Damn.

Oh well, I try again. I hit my delay.
I flip the journal correctly and sweet scent.
I get a pokemon that doesn't even exist in my seed. :(

What happened?

You can ask someone to check it for you with an external device in the simple requests thread. Otherwise, chaining a few Pokemon is probably the easiest way to do it. There will be a snazzy new chaining guide on site very, soon, too.

ASIDE: I met Masuda last week :)

I tried chaining and it gets really frustrating when My chain breaks. What do I have to give them?

And thats cool. Is he a nice guy?

Okay, important question.

I mess up and land on frame 586, I'm aiming for frame 590.
I'm in the Old Chateau and I sweet scent, believing I'm on the right frame and I am not, I catch a Gastly that corresponds to frame 586.
Now, after the battle, what is the frame at now? How do battles advance it?
I tested what LF told me once, +5, and at least in this case, was incorrect.
I calculated that the frame would be 591 now, and I have this spread also occurring on 596 and 598.
So I walk a step, 592, then I journal flip twice on accident. So 596. Well no big deal, the sweet scenting will put me at 598.
Nope. I'm not sure what frame this Gastly is because I had 5 pokémon in my party.

This spread also hits on 610, 614, 616 ... is it too late for these?
Please help!

In the rng reporter, there is a column named actual frame next to frame. After the battle, the current frame becomes the actual frame+5 not the frame +5
