Movie thread

I thought Advent Children was better than Spirits Within.

Also Batman Begins > The Dark Knight ?????? I do not comprehend.

This thread should probably not devolve into an argument about how Advent Children assassinated characters and pandered to the worst fans of the franchise. Spirits Within is mostly honorary in that I think it's both a decent sci-fi film and because even without chocobos it actually uses a great many FF story elements.

But I just liked Batman Begins a bit more than the Dark Knight, BB was what made me so eager to see DN for years but I didn't like the structure or style as much and there were a few gaping plot holes. Dark Knight was still great because of the villains and it's one of the better movies of the decade but I don't crowd lists with similar subjects.

good movies uhh

jodorowsky's the holy mountain
melville's le samourai
refn's bronson
sorrentino's conzeguenze dell'amore
kaufman's synecdoche, new york
durkin's martha marcy may marlene

MORE LATER???

Hm I can see where you're coming from for Advent Children. Then again, I didn't watch Advent Children for the plot or characters, but just to watch Sephiroth and Cloud fight again really. Personally, I disliked Spirits Within.

It's probably different for me because I watched Dark Knight first and then watched Batman Begins. They were both terrific movies but I think Heath Ledger's Joker performance tipped the scales.

1. Princess Mononoke (1997)
2. Toy Story 3 (2010)
3. Inception (2010)
4. Pulp Fiction (1994)
5. Up (2009)
6. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
7. The Lion King (1994)
8. Barefoot Gen (1983)
9. Fight Club (1999)
10. 12 Angry Men(1957)

And like ButteredToast, Space Jam was also my best childhood movie.

ok i'll post a legit list

1) howl's moving castle (never gets old for me, miyazaki is god, such a wonderful movie, etc)

2) juno (sooo funny but also really poignant. plus ellen page is so great, and the movies sountrack kicks ass)

3) forgetting sarah marshall (just the right blend of raunchy and romantic, plus the visuals are BEAUTIFUL as almost the whole movie is set in hawaii. oh and mila kunis is fucking sexy)

4) WALL-E (forever one of my favorites, gorgeous, adorable, and funny all at once)

5) lord of the rings triology (definitely the best film series on the entire planet. seriously, if you only ever get the chance to watch one film series, watch this one. and see if you can get your hands on the extended additions as well, theyre well worth it imo)

6) breakfast at tiffany's (audrey hepburn is just gorgeous, and the film itself is such an interesting glimpse into life in new york city in the 1960s that its just fascinating to watch. plus it contains the best movie-related song of all time, moon river~)

7) bridesmaids (SOOOO FUCKING FUNNY. honestly the funniest movie ive ever seen. i challenge you not to laugh out loud mutliple times, especially during the airplane scene, which might be the most comical scene of any movie ive ever seen)

8) Amelie (one of my favorites. paris is one of my favorite cities on earth -- i plan on living there one day -- so Amelie is just perfect for me. the film itself is so beautiful and uplifting, you cant help but smile while watching it. even though its a french movie with english subtitles, anyone who considers themselves a film enthusiast cant miss this one)

9) spirited away (i fucking love hayao miyazaki, nuff said niggas)

10) american beauty (such a well-acted, multi-layered, witty as hell black comedy-drama. definitely a cant miss movie, has everything that makes up a good film)

some honorable mentions include: the dark knight, any movie by hayao miyazaki, the 40 year old virgin, inglourious basterds, black swan, slumdug millionaire, casino royale, and some others

lol i fucking love movies. i actually made a thread like this one months ago haha

I rarely watch movies (I prefer books tbh) but my favourites are:

1. Avatar (which I seem to pronounce wrong in comparison to the rest of the world)
2. It's a Wonderful Life
3. The Crow
4. Up
5. Blazing Saddles

(Not necessarily in that order, depends on my mood).

8) Amelie (one of my favorites. paris is one of my favorite cities on earth -- i plan on living there one day -- so Amelie is just perfect for me. the film itself is so beautiful and uplifting, you cant help but smile while watching it. even though its a french movie with english subtitles, anyone who considers themselves a film enthusiast cant miss this one)

watched this the other day, great; audrey tautou is adorable in that movie

I have always said that when talking about film instead of talking about your favorite movies it should be the best film you've seen. My favorite film is Iron Man but I wouldn't consider it the best film I've seen (Shawshank Redemption).

-teenage mutant ninja turtles
-teenage mutant ninja turtles 2:secret of the ooze
-night at the roxbury
-team america: world police
-south park:movie
-ford fairlane:rock and roll detective
-reservoir dogs
-waking life
-a scanner darkly
-jeepers creepers
-deep blue sea
-easy money
My all time favorite movie would have to be Pitch Black or The Chronicles of Riddick
Id say American Psycho is a good movie because Christian Bale is an amazing actor, but that would be doing the book injustice.

good films that apparently haven't been mentioned in this thread yet

Fireworks, There Will Be Blood, Oldboy, Stalker, Lawrence Of Arabia, Flipped, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Memento, Life Is Beautiful, Pan's Labyrinth, Laputa: Castle In The Sky, The King's Speech, Being John Malkovich, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Prestige, City Of God, Following and Exit Through The Gift Shop

Never Been Kissed (1999) was a great movie, Imo!

I watched it the other day on Netflix, it was great :)

Btw, don't watch The Last Song (Not sure what year, I think it was 2009 or 2010) if you don't like anything really dramatic (Or if you don't like Miley Cyrus). It was a decent movie at best, but it did have a nice message.

*facepalms* Forgot about Big Lebowski...

I've recently watched some pretty excellent film noir this week. I'm kind of in love with black and white movies, and I wish I had time to watch through my HUGE backlog of movies on my computer. Basically. if any of you haven't seen C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog is its English title), or The Great Dictator I highly suggest you watch them sometime soon!

neither of those movies are noir ?_? but if you like noir check out the obvious classics like reed's the third man and wilder's sunset boulevard

@gen -- since you're getting into b/w film, i'll recommend a couple of my favorite films noir: out of the past and in a lonely place.

i'm also a fan of blonde venus, a pre-Hays code sort of pre-noir film. blonde venus offers perhaps less significant information in the mise-en-scene than noir proper -- although don't get me wrong, there is lots to analyze in the film (i spent a while trying to pick apart the possible implications of the gorilla suit cabaret performance). it introduces the prototypical femme fatale in marlene dietrich's character, the film's protagonist. which reminds me of double indemnity, another favorite, which pays homage to dietrich in its own femme fatale, phyllis dietrichson.

glen and az's recommendations are solid as well. and i feel you can't be a fan of noir without watching the maltese falcon (bogart's version). also, the man who wasn't there (2001) by the coen brothers does a great job as a neo-noir film in that it's 'anachronistic as fuck' in terms of the attention paid to the visual narrative -- great homage to the golden -- strike that, the cigarette smoke-tinged -- age of film noir.

Best noirs are anything from Billy Wilder. Also not mentioned yet is Touch of Evil, but really there are too many great noirs to see.

Fight Club

True Grit (recent version)

Marnie (under appreciated hitchcock)

Midnight in Paris- Owen Wilson does a better Woody Allen impression than Woody Allen ever did.

Battle Royale

Spirited Away

Citizen Kane

Memento

Terminator 2 (best action movie)

American History X

The Shining

Requiem for A Dream

The King's Speech

Sweeney Todd

Yeah HBC all over this list...

Just watched Battle Royale for the first time after reading the book a few weeks ago, and while it was pretty good, I missed a lot of background. Of course it's pretty difficult to fit 500 pages into 2 hours of movie, but I still think that some characters, especially the mad ones like Kazuo and Mitsuko, deserved some more explanation behind them. And then some characters were missing altogether, like the queer boy and self-declared solar princess (or something along those lines).
What I liked about the movie though was the acting, that was pretty good. I still think it's a pity that some of the background didn't really get the time it deserved. Maybe something for the remake? :)
