Music Festivals 2008

So it's the new year and festival line-ups are starting to be announced. I seem to remember seeing a thread about Reading/Leeds a while back and figured that this is the logical progression. I also wasn't sure if this was Congregation or Renaissance material, so sorry and please move if wrong.

Festivals are a pretty big thing to me because they link me really strongly to my friends. I've been to Reading festival every year since 2003, despite living in the US. The first year I went with some friends as a random holiday, and it was so good that every year it has become a tradition for the exact same group to go back. We can't do it this year, due to college, etc. So to take it's place, this year we're going to Coachella, which is much closer to home. I can't wait to see Portishead. Imagine they're going to be pretty eclectic.

Also going to Roskilde (Denmark) this year. I went last year with some people from my halls at Oxford as a kind of forced introductory holiday thing. It definitely worked and we've had our tickets for this year's festival since release. So far only Radiohead and Chemical Brothers have been officially announced, but I will happily travel to Europe for these two alone. The Flamings Lips were absolutely stunning there last year. I hadn't really heard them before but now I am hooked.

Anyway, I guess this thread is to talk about festivals that you've been to/ want to go to, who you want to see at them, best experiences etc.

Even though this is a few days old I'm still replying due to lack of action in congregation.

I'm going to my first music festival this Friday when the Big Day Out comes to Adelaide. I don't really know what to expect actually, the plan is just to go see the bands we want at the different stages but I have no idea what the crowds are going to be like. I just hope its not going to be boiling hot.

Arcade Fire is probably the main band I want to see, they should be freakin awesome onstage, but Midnight Juggernauts, Bjork, Rage Against the Machine, and Adelaide bands Leader Cheetah and Skeletons will be on my list as well. I know some of the guys from these two and they should be a big highlight.

Other mentionable are Cut Off Your Hands, Sarah Blasko and Regurgitator. God am I looking forward to Friday!

Me and some of my friends are going to Bamboozle in May.

The bands that I can remember are 3oh!3, All Time Low, Senses Fail, Paramore(lol), and Saves The Day.

Lowlands! Pinkpop! I dunno but hope there will be a Fields of Rock this year.

Last year there was a music festival here at Red Rocks called Monolith and it seemed to have some good bands, but unfortunately I couldn't go. It would be cool to go to it this year (if they have it).

i went to virginfestival in toronto this year and it was quite amazing.

Highlight bands: Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork, Interpol, Arctic Monkeys, MIA, K-os, Metric, The Killers, and Stars.

Quite the show, will most likely be going back next year.

I've been to a Festival called the Beautiful Days festival the past couple of years, and hopefully I can go again this year, Doubtful due to my need to grow up and get myself a place to live.

Beautiful days festival is The Levellers festival and includes alot of non-commercialised Bands, and those that have fell out of favour with the Mainstream music industry. In the past two years bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen, The Proclaimers, Chumbawumba (Acoustic), Killing Joke, Willy Mason, Boney M however big Artist this year was KT Tunstall. Other bands played include Hayseed Dixie, Drunk in Public, Dreadzone, Gigi Bordello aswell as a Band who busked at the festival two years ago and Impressed the Levellers so much they were given a slot on stage.

Much rather go to this festival than the mainstream due to the huge size and crowds where this is more cosy issuing only 10k tickets

I really really really want to get a convoy of my friends together to visit the big music festivals this year. I BONAROOOOOO'd it up last year and it was so much fun.

So all you smogoners out there who are attending music festivals let me know and I will try to hang out with you if we end up going there.

Bonaroo, eh? my friend went to that last year, too. and he's looking to go again this year. but that's so far away from Delaware (isn't it near/in Tennessee?) and probably really expensive...

I also saw the Smashing Pumpkins last year on Pukkelpop, and the show was really garbage, everyone was disappointed. I also saw Enter Shikari twice on the same day, Cansei De Ser Sexy (or how you even spell that), Tool, Within Temptation and Fall Out Boy (lol). There also were some pretty good electronic names etc etc.

This year's planned festivals:
Dour 2008 (Belgium)
Les Ardentes 2008 (Belgium)
Nature-One 2008 (Germany)
Pukkelpop 2008 (Belgium)

I went to Glastonbury last year, had the time of my life.

The lineup doesn't sound quite as good this time though. =[

This is Hardcore is the best Hardcore festival around. 3 days every August in Philly. There are never any fights, only the best bands, and no security. Its no doubt the most fun I have ever had in my life.

Lexay, that sucks, the pumpkins were phenomenal in Toronto. The only gripe people had was the song selection (they did too much Zietgeist), but the classics they did play were all phenomenal. It was a 1.5 hour set, so they got to play some cool songs including Hummer, To Shiela and an acoustic 1979 which i put on youtube. Not to mention everything else you would expect: Tonight Tonight, Today, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Stand Inside Your Love. Man it was a great preformance.

Bonnaroo is indeed in Manchester, TN. A couple of hours outside of Nashville.

It's great fun though. Spend the weekend camping out, getting drunk, getting high, listening to great music, making great memories.

Great
