My first day with Smogon and Shoddy Battle (Smogon Newb)

Greetings all! I'm KP and i'm new to the forums. Quick background on myself: I have been playing Pokemon ever since red and blue (and green from japan). I absolutely love Pokemon and will always have a warm spot for it in my heart. I recently got into Pokemon again and picked up Pokemon Platinum. I connected to wifi via the battle tower and battled a round of 7 people from Japan and swept the floor with all of them. I earned rank 2, and began to play the next batch of 7... and i got destroyed... tried again... pwned... I was quick to say "They cheated! Action replay?" but quickly dismissed that and did research. That's what brought me to smogon.

Through this wonderful website that i have been addicted too, i have learned many new builds and important ideas and concepts that are useful for all trainers. EVs and IVs were a rude awakening for myself, but very important. But anyways... Back to the intent of my post!

I downloaded Shoddy Battle, and started it up. Made a team of 6:

Metagross, Blissey, Starmie, Infernape, Gengar and Cresselia

I was intimidated by the spam in the chat channel so i went over to the ladder and loaded my team up and searched for a game. A few moments later my first battle started.

Sent out Metagross set up stealth rock and uhh... a few moments later i was tanking with my chansey and then... it was over. The match went by extremely fast. Not because either of us were poor players, but i guess its just much more fast passed then the gameboy battles.

My second match began and my oppent was afk. He was not at his computer. i sat and watched the timer go down for over 4 minutes and when it was 8 seconds till his timer was up, he came back!

Again it was my Metagross vs his azelf, i meteor mashed him twice for the kill. Then he swapped to something else which i forgot and i exploded for the KO aswell. When i swapped to my Blissey he replied, "i hate blissey, gg" so i used toxic on his regi-somethin' for some reason and he was immune, he then use toxic on me and i swapped out to cure it and brought in infernape. KO'd him and brought out my cresselia and took out his last 1 or 2 pokemon.

These two matches were fun, but fast. I enjoy the speed and gameplay of Shoddy Battle and hope to play again in the near future. I hope to become more active with Shoddy Battle and become more active with the Smogon community as well.

Ya as someone else mentioned, Toxic doesn't work on steels. Enjoy your stay
 
Don't be slack. I reccomend you first learn the basics like what types affect each other, and then sign up for the tutoring program

Yeah, the pace of Shoddy is a shock to newcomers I think. It's very much functionality-only, lacking the visual cues of the cartridge game. It took some getting used to for me.

Bear in mind when you're new, and thus low on the ladder, a lot of what you fight will be other people low on the ladder, and thus relatively weak. As you move up you'll be more likely to encounter stronger opponents.
 
I always got killed by bulletpunch Scizor my first time playing. And don't even mention Garchomps in OU... I had no idea how to counter.
 
When i first played on shoddy about 2 years ago, i beat some big named player with garchomp, but dont get me wrong, i was a total noob. But, once again, i had garchomp. Anyway, he got pissed or whatever and told someone to ban me. And..i got banned. Forgot who it was though, it's all good.
