Project National Dex OU: Break This Core (Week 34: Mega Latias + Kartana + Victini)

It’s voting time, and I’d like to thank you for all the submissions! Unfortunately there can only be one winner. Choose who broke our first 3-Mon core the best!

Reuniclus @ Electrium Z
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Thunder
- Recover

CM reuniclus cant be worn down via chip damage and nothing on the core really damages it. After a CM Z-thunder ohkos toxapex, cm boosts and it sits on clef and beats it 1v1, and corv is 1 para away from being a goner. 44 speed is for pex and the rest in phys def to make sure brave birds dont chunk it to much
:Magnezone:
Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Volt Switch

Nothing special or anything but this dude is very annoying to these cores, hits pex for momentum, clef dies to flash, traps corv.
voting mega scizor and...

:ss/tapu-koko:
Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Wild Charge
- Roost
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- U-turn

Koko just tackles everything and hits Clef with Z-move.
:ss/Mawile-Mega:

Mawile-Mega @ Mawilite
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 168 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Iron Head
- Sucker Punch / Play Rough / Knock Off
- Thunder Punch

The EV spread chosen allows Mawile-Mega outspeed Clefable, the fastest out of the three by one point, to maximize attack power, and dumped the rest into HP. After one Swords Dance, Mawile OHKO's Toxapex and Corviknight with Thunder Punch and Clefable with Iron Head. If Toxapex manages to burn Mawile-Mega on the Swords Dance turn, it still OHKO's Clefable but needs to hit both Toxapex and Corviknight twice.

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 866-1020 (219.7 - 258.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 184+ Def Corviknight: 454-536 (113.5 - 134%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 428-504 (140.7 - 165.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power burned Mawile-Mega Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 433-510 (109.8 - 129.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power burned Mawile-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 184+ Def Corviknight: 227-268 (56.7 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Huge Power burned Mawile-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 214-252 (70.3 - 82.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice/focus blast
- Taunt

setup on any mon then gaming. you could do modest for more power ig but timid let you outspeed base 100

calc :
+2 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 72 SpD Corviknight: 672-792 (168.4 - 198.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 348-409 (88.3 - 103.8%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
+2 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 470-554 (154.6 - 182.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
:SS/Heatran:
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest/Timid
- Earth Power
- Magma Storm
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
Heatran can cause a lot of drama to this core as both corv and clef get smacked by magma storm while pex gets trapped and then heatran can just taunt the pex and kill it with earth power while not really getting scared by scald.Heatran also has ample defensive utility against this core as it can come in on clef's knock or moonblast(u do have to watch out for moonblast Spa drop)corv's roosing or fogging away hazards, pex's toxic or recover.

Some notable calcs:252+ SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 195-231 (49.4 - 58.6%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (modest)

252+ SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 72 SpD Corviknight: 378-446 (94.7 - 111.7%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO(modest)

252+ SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 122-144 (40.1 - 47.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO(modest)

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 112-132 (36.8 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO(timid)

0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 102-120 (31.5 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
Magnezone @ Electrium Z / Steelium Z
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Fire
- Flash Cannon

Get in on something that isn't U-Turn or Scald and start blasting (None of the mons can break sub anyways)

After seeing some niche sets like SD Mawile and Specs Magnezone, I wanted to return to a staple of the metagame, curse hippo.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 8 HP / 124 Atk / 252 SpD / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Fire Fang
- Curse
- Slack Off

EVs are fairly standard, and so are the moves, but I'll still explain.

Curse T1 obviously, say pex switches in predicting you're standard cursehippo (because why wouldn't they) and tries to get the haze before godhippo gets out of control. However, these speed EVs let you outspeed Toxapex while at -1 so you can OHKO before the haze gets off.

+1 124+ Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 306-360 (100.6 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Clefable is fairly obvious, you take nothing and can set up for free.
0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 8 HP / 252 SpD Hippowdon: 96-114 (26.7 - 31.7%) -- 27.6% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+5 124+ Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 447-526 (113.4 - 133.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Same with Corviknight

0 Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. +6 8 HP / 0 Def Hippowdon: 25-31 (6.9 - 8.6%) -- possibly the worst move ever
+6 124+ Atk Hippowdon Fire Fang vs. 252 HP / 184+ Def Corviknight: 372-438 (93 - 109.5%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

If you're like me and don't regularly run speed on hippo, here's a great way to outspeed toxapex while ohkoing it without any speed investment. Normal uninvested hippo outspeeds, but you can't get an attack boost without curse. The solution, stockpile Hippowdon.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 124 Atk / 132 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stomping Tantrum
- Stockpile
- Spit Up
- Slack Off

This beautiful set lets you spit up on the toxapex switch in if there is one. Obviously, you won't have any stockpile layers, so the move will fail. Then you can click stomping tantrum which gives a 2x damage boost for failing your previous move which:
124+ Atk Hippowdon Stomping Tantrum vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 306-360 (100.6 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Unfortunately this set doesn't (shocking) beat Clefable and Corviknight, but that's a shame, still wanted to show an alternative set for ladder usage!

I also experimented with rock tomb hippo so you could outspeed and get 2 attacks off before they roost when they drop in speed past your benchmark, but it just misses out on a 2hko its like 25% chance to 2hko.
voting for this hippo set because i'm being silenced

Mistake on my end, Noglastica should have had his set featuring Hippowdon included.

Dracozolt is not on the VR so that will unfortunately have to stay off the voting list.

Tagging everyone who has voted in case this changes your voting choice. Sorry again, and good luck to all our submissions.

Zeraora @ Firium Z
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Close Combat
- Blaze Kick
- Volt Switch

Zeraora being faster than all three Pokémon presented and paired with amazing coverage means it can efficiently take out all three. Plasma Fists guarantees a kill against Charizard-Y, Close Combat against Weavile, and Inferno Overdrive against Kartana due to that 136 HP EV investment giving Kartana a chance to survive a regular Blaze Kick.

252 Atk Zeraora Plasma Fists vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-Y: 360-426 (121.2 - 143.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Zeraora Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 672-792 (239.1 - 281.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Zeraora Inferno Overdrive (160 BP) vs. 136 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 496-588 (169.2 - 200.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Lycanroc-Dusk @ Life Orb
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat

I don’t even need some busted mon or settup just run lycan. Zard ohko by accelerock kart ohko by cc weav ohko by accel and even if they let you take the chip from life orb from killing zard and kart along with the defense drop from cc onkart you are at 81% when weav comes in and at max they do 80.7%.
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Shard vs. -1 0 HP / 0 Def Lycanroc-Dusk: 199-235 (68.3 - 80.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Thank you very much and good day.

I have been informed this is not a valid entry due to lycanroc not being on the VR :(

Ok I have been told that it must be a mon on the VR (which is lame because eleki worked too but that’s not vr) so from atleast what I can find this next mon imma show is on the VR

Charizard-Mega-X @ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 248 HP / 24 Def / 40 SpD / 196 Spe
Careful Nature
- Roost
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

So idk if it’s only supposed to be mons that work in every possible situation but here is one that works in every possible situation. If they lead weav you take the triple set up dd then click d claw to kill weav or 2hko everything else and if they switch out to zard it’s good that you don’t get the ohko roll so you roost on it because roost out heals focus miss by the tiniest bit and from there you win. If they lead zard settup on it and win. If they lead kart settup on it and win. As long as zard doesn’t crit or spdef drop you, you’re fine and should always win. The only tricky situation is the weav one every other one you just settup and win.

P.S. this is a viable set and it’s the main bulky mega zard x set I use I typically pair it with very heavy hazard control as means to actually let the set do it’s job. Would recommend it it’s quite fun. (The important calcs are never 2hko by mega zard y focus miss and speed to beat common dnite dragon dance while also outpaceing mega beedril at plus 1)

replay of testing strat:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8nationaldex-1505811223

also I just looked and I actually beat them easier because kart cannot sd on my zard or use really any move to threaten it

Tapu Koko @ Choice Specs
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Dazzling Gleam
- Hidden Power [Fire]

find a chance to switch in safely, once you do it's going to be a nightmare for the opponent, you have enough speed to run circles around them while having the coverage to destroy them. If you switch in against Zard Y then congrats, as you can click volt switch which will always ko zard y and deal a lot of damage to the other 2 while keeping momentum, whereas Dazzling Gleam and HP fire will destroy weavile and kartana respectively. Weavile also needs multiple rounds of stealth rock chip to revenge kill with ice shard

252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Charizard-Mega-Y in Electric Terrain: 408-482 (137.3 - 162.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Level: 100
Jolly Nature
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Aqua Jet
- U-turn

outspeeds the trio, cc ohko's weavile and kart and mega zard y will die to surging strikes after a little chip even with sun, here is the calcs:

defensive calcs:
252 SpA Charizard-Mega-Y Weather Ball (100 BP Fire) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Urshifu-Rapid-Strike in Sun: 216-254 (63.3 - 74.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock.
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: 138-165 (40.4 - 48.3%) -- approx. 2.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock.
(could switch on those 2 if they didn't predict but not on any of kart attacks, it will get either killed or get his scarf koffed, although it can switch on the turn were kart is healing or defogging)

offensive calcs:
252 Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard-Mega-Y in Sun on a critical hit: 222-270 (74.7 - 90.9%) -- approx. 2HKO (it needs a little chip).
252 Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 136 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 312-368 (106.4 - 125.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO.
