NCAA Football thread

I know that there is a NFL Thread, but NCAA football is completely different!

Now, I know we still have a couple of months before the games start, but I feel like discussion is always good.

What do you guys think the top 25 will be?
Who do you want in the top spot?
Which teams do you want in the BCS Bowl games (including championship)?
What's your feeling about non BCS teams, in relation to bowl games?

This is some discussion matter that we can discuss. Anyway, if y'all want, I'll post the top 25 rankings in the first post once they come out and update them every week for your enjoyment.

alright lemme do a quick top 5, will edit with more later maybe...

1. Florida
Yeah pretty obvious here, they should be the unanimous #1 in every legit poll. Their leaders on both sides of the ball (Tebow, Brandon Spikes) are returning plus they only lose 1 defensive starter from last year. Percy Harvin is their one big loss, I think they'll miss his playmaking ability but Florida has so much talent at RB/WR that they can defintiely make it up.

2. Oklahoma
Tough choice over Texas but I think Oklahoma will be a tad better this year. I really like their running game this year with DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown back. Last year, I think they were a bit tempted by the passing game because of all the talent they had and their defense suffered a bit because their offense scored too fast. They get most of their starters back on D so that should be solid once again. I think the reputation of "big 12 defenses suck" doesn't apply as much to OU, they did a pretty good job against a great Florida offense in the championship game. With Bradford back to lead the way, OU has a great shot at another NC appearance.

3. Texas
Basically 2b here, like I said there's not much seperating OU and Texas. McCoy + Shipley will be great on offense, they have enough talent there to replace Quan Cosby too. Of course Orakpo will be missed on D but again with Texas, they have enough talent to somewhat make up for that loss in production. The running game will be an issue though...Ogbanaya was solid last year but he's gone, everyone else is basically unproven. If Texas can get a decent running game going though they'll be right up there with Florida.

4. USC
Even though they're gonna be breaking in a new QB, there's just too much talent here to put them any lower. If this were almost any other team, I would worry about them losing all their linebackers but this is USC...there's 3 more 5 star recruits to step into place. All of their key skill position guys like CJ Gable and Joe McKnight are back so life should be pretty easy for whoever is taking snaps.

5. Ole Miss
Going on a bit of a limb here but I really like Ole Miss this year. They were really impressive in their bowl game against Texas Tech last year and they have a lot of starters coming back. Jevan Snead is one of the best QBs in the country going into this season. Houston Nutt is also a very good coach, he's great at getting the most out of a team. All of their losses last year were really close so hopefully with that year of experience under their belts they can win those close games.

Even though people might think im crazy, Notre Dame will at worst be in the top 25 this year. They probably wont start out ranked, but they will get in there pretty easily. Clausen is going to be even better this year, and now they have a better then average receiving core. Michael Floyd was an absolute beast last year, and he was only a freshman. Their opposite wideout is another top recruit they got, Shaquille Evans. Then Golden Tate as a slot wideout. They dont have much at the RB, but their D is also going to be solid with the #1 rated defensive player coming out of High School. Their schedule is also favorable, so nobody should be surprised if they reach 10/11 wins this year

Ole Miss in the top five is a bit of a stretch. Lets not forget that they play in the SEC, so they'll be playing tough games every single week (during conference play). Meanwhile, teams in the Big Ten and Pac 10 can dominate their conferences to skate to the top five.

And as a State College resident and current student, I can pretty confidently predict that Penn State will underachieve this year.

Im tellin you... Today is just the beginning for ND. #23 in the pole, and our schedule is more than favorable. Plus our wideouts are crazy to the point where Clausen cant possibly have anything close to a bad season. Its going to be interesting

a kid from ny who likes the lakers and notre dame hmmmmmm......................

Anyway, Notre Dame's season will ride on week 2 when they go into the Big House and play Michigan. Not that I expect Michigan to be any good (though they should have improved since it would be hard not to after last season), but week 3 against Michigan State is probably going to be a loss and there's a huge difference between a 2-1 start and a 1-2 start. Purdue is a winnable game and so is Washington but being in the hole after the first 3 games makes teams doubt themselves, especially a team like Notre Dame that has a lot of pressure to improve, which could make Purdue/Wash much tougher than they could potentially be. USC is almost certainly a loss and then after that the stretch is pretty interesting and will depend a lot on how the first half of the season goes. So the defining moment in the ND season, IMO, is week 2 which I won't watch since I hate both UM and ND.. xD

Ole Miss deserves to be in the top 5 this year because of their great performance versus texas tech last year in their bowl game. :P

Well, the rankings are out, with Florida first place in both of them. What do you guys think of the rankings overall? SEC looks good this year, and Big 12 should get better (they were a bit overrated last year, face it).

This year is the year that Cal finally overtakes USC and goes to the Rose Bowl. With that experienced defense and the Best on offense, there's no way they can lose :)

Always rooting for my hometown team to win. Golden Bears for a BCS Bowl appearance!

It's not that surprising, really, when you consider that OK was without their best player and leader for the whole second half and the fact that BYU is scarily good on defense. BYU should go undefeated this year and play in a BCS bowl.

That said, it is a huge upset for the number three team in the nation to go down Week 1. More surprising was the Navy-Ohio State game (that it was so close) and Iowa almost falling to Northern Iowa (two blocked kicks saved their asses).

hey

notre dame lost

already

like i thought they would

hard to win when you are fighting 12 men on the field (fucking refs)

in all reality, i think everyone can agree that notre dame has the better talent but michigan just did an excellent job of readjusting at halftime while apparently weis just talked about penalties, despite the michigan drive before the half.

not to mention the review of the 1st quarter touchdown that was overturned. 1.) i'm surprised they reviewed it without a challenge thrown by rich and 2.) it was pretty obvious from the second camera he never stepped out. even if he did, it was so hard to tell that it was inconclusive and therefore a touchdown.

notre dame needs to stop the fucking run, props to michigan for having a beast of a tailback in minor

michigan qb force or whatever, i think he is ok but he and millen should get a room or something, he was all over his dick for the entire game because he is a true freshman. this kid isn't tim tebow -.-

that being said, gg michigan, but notre dame really could have won, our playcalling, clock managment, and bad holding penalties (not to mention the horrible refs) just made this a loss. the good news is i think we will look a lot better in coming weeks.

edit:

can't believe i didn't respond to this a while ago but:

ou looked awful anyway with bradford in lol, even if he had stayed in, it would have been an extremely close game. (with him out, they definitely didn't stand a chance though)

Even though it was a really badly played game with a few good plays in between... that UGA vs USC game was amazing lol.

first, USC played OSU, UGA played SCAR :P

nice to see the true freshman really step up on that last drive to give USC the win :)

The problem is just Charlie Weis. The Penalties did hurt Notre Dame, but there was one factor they didnt see in that game. Every time Michael Floyd ran a route he burned the Michigan secondary. All they had to do was keep throwin it his way until Michigan started throwing double coverage at him, and even then it still might of not worked. It also didnt help that ND decided when they put Michigan on 4th and 3 to just almost play man and forget about the qb, but oo well. ND just needs to win out from this point if they want title hopes, or even bcs hopes. If they can beat USC at home its a rap from there, although Navy seems to have a decent team as well this year
