Necturna

[OVERVIEW]

Necturna is the best setup sweeper in the metagame thanks to its lack of counters. Its access to Sketch lets it run a variety of notable moves like Shell Smash, Shift Gear, Dragon Ascent, V-create, and Bolt Strike. Shell Smash is Necturna's best set, however, because it can overwhelm a great majority of the metagame with +2 Attack, +2 Speed, and a Z-Move. Thanks to its good bulk and typing, Necturna gets many setup opportunities against Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Chansey. Shift Gear sets benefit from the popularity of Shell Smash sets causing players to use defensive Tomohawk as their only Necturna answer a lot of the time, which Shift Gear sets can overload thanks to Leech Seed's consistent chip damage and the fact that they'll recover more HP than they take. Other sets such as Choice Band can wallbreak thanks to Necturna's high-Base Power moves.

However, while Necturna's base Speed is more than enough to outspeed offensive Pokemon when boosted, it usually falls short of Choice Scarf users like Greninja and Kitsunoh because of the necessity of running an Adamant nature. Necturna's unboosted Speed is also rather underwelming, failing to surpass Pokemon like Heatran and Landorus-T. The presence of Pokemon like Syclant, Colossoil, and Weavile, which make use of super effective priority moves, also makes Necturna's job as a sweeper harder. Sets that aren't running Shell Smash have to specialize in beating defensive Tomohawk to be justifiable, and they tend to have worse matchups on average.

move 4: Substitute
item: Ghostium Z
ability: Forewarn
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Shell Smash turns Necturna into a devastating sweeper that's capable of outspeeding the unboosted metagame and OHKOing many frail targets (RC) and even some bulky Pokemon like Toxapex and Landorus-T with Power Whip. Substitute gives Necturna a way to get around Colossoil's and Mega Mawile's Sucker Punch and to avoid status ailments from Pokemon like Chansey.

Set Details
========

Ghostium Z is essential to overwhelm bulky Pokemon like Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, Jumbao, and Celesteela. An Adamant nature is preferred over a Jolly nature to OHKO Mega Scizor at +2 most of the time and to have a chance at OHKOing Toxapex at +2 without having to use its the Z-Move.

Usage Tips
========

Thanks to Necturna's good defensive typing and decent defenses, it can set up on a myriad of Pokemon, such as Choice-locked Landorus-T as well as Pokemon that can only do little damage to it like Tapu Koko and Ferrothorn. You should attempt to weaken the opposition with entry hazards and other teammates before attempting to set Necturna up for a sweep. Substitute should be used on a forced switch to ensure safety or against slower status users like Chansey. You can use Necturna to force in Tomohawk, giving a teammate like Mega Alakazam, Mega Latios, or Tapu Lele an opportunity to switch in. Once Necturna's checks are weakened, feel free to sacrifice a Pokemon like Landorus-T or Heatran to Choice-locked Water-types like Volkraken and Ash-Greninja so Necturna can freely set up and win.

Team Options
========

Necturna fits incredibly well on bulky offensive and balanced teams. Psychic-types such as Mega Alakazam, Mega Latios, and Tapu Lele can take advantage of Tomohawk, Necturna's best counter. Electric- and Fairy-types like Tapu Koko and Clefable could also be used for this purpose. Additionally, Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain means Necturna cannot be revenge killed by priority users like Syclant, Colossoil, and Weavile for a few key turns. Pokemon that bait a Water-type attack from Choice-locked Water-types like Ash-Greninja and Volkraken, such as Heatran and Landorus-T, create setup opportunites for Necturna. Those two can also set Stealth Rock. Similarly, Spikes setters such as Greninja, Ash-Greninja, and Ferrothorn help by weakening teams until Necturna can successfully sweep. Pokemon that can check Dark- and Fire-types like Ash-Greninja, Volkraken, and Heatran, such as Arghonaut and Mega Latios, are great teammates because Necturna will struggle to set up if these Pokemon are around. VoltTurn users like Mega Crucibelle, Tornadus-T, and Tapu Koko can help with getting Necturna into play. Necturna appreciates entry hazard removal, particularly from Pokemon that can reliably remove Toxic Spikes, so Defoggers like Tornadus-T and Mega Scizor as well as grounded Poison-types like Mega Crucibelle and Toxapex make for great teammates.

Necturna also fits on hyper offensive teams thanks to its ability to get out of control quickly, especially when such teams tend to make it easier for Necturna to set up. Tapu Koko can set dual screens and use Taunt for Necturna, which eases setup, and can get it into play easily with U-turn. Tomohawk is also extremely valuable on these types of teams, setting Stealth Rock and providing Memento support. Sweepers such as Magearna and Naviathan complement Necturna on these types of teams, essentially forming a setup spam core that can overwhelm bulkier teams.

[SET]
name: Shift Gear
move 1: Shift Gear
move 2: Horn Leech
move 3: Phantom Force
move 4: Leech Seed
item: Leftovers
ability: Forewarn
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 192 Atk / 28 SpD / 36 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Shift Gear is used instead of Shell Smash because it maintains Necturna's bulk, giving it the ability to keep taking Air Slash from Tomohawk while boosting. Horn Leech is chosen instead of the stronger alternative, Power Whip, because Power Whip doesn't get any notable OHKOs to warrant giving up Horn Leech's perfect accuracy and ability to recover Necturna's health against Pokemon like Clefable. Leech Seed, coupled with Leftovers and Phantom Force's invulnerability turn, gives Necturna the ability to outlast defensive Tomohawk after it's used a few Roost PP and keeps Necturna healthy while setting up on Pokemon like Celesteela. Substitute can be run instead of Horn Leech to dodge status, but this hinders Necturna's matchup against Clefable. Running Substitute also makes Necturna more reliant on PP stalling Pokemon like Arghonaut.

Set Details
========

The Speed investment lets Necturna to outspeed defensive Tomohawk, while the bulk investment allows it to avoid getting 2HKOed by Tomohawk's Air Slash after Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery. The rest of the EVs are dumped in Attack with an Adamant nature to maximize damage output. An alternative EV spread of 252 HP / 108 Atk / 112 SpD / 36 Spe with a Careful nature can be run on Substitute sets to prevent Clefable from breaking Necturna's Substitute with Moonblast.

Usage Tips
========

You should use Leech Seed to punish switches to Pokemon like Tomohawk and Celesteela, allowing Necturna to come out on top in a one-on-one situation. Against Tomohawk, you should constantly use Shift Gear after Leech Seed to pressure it into using Haze and Roost, until it runs out of Roost PP. In general, you should fire off Leech Seed and Horn Leech to weaken the opposition first before actually trying to sweep, because Shift Gear Necturna is very weak and will be unable to break a healthy team. For the same reason, even after a boost, you should try to have entry hazards up on the opposing field. You should attempt to set up with Shift Gear on Pokemon that can't touch Necturna, like Tapu Koko and Choice-locked Landorus-T.

Team Options
========

Stacking entry hazards with Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Heatran, Clefable, and Arghonaut to weaken the opposition is a good idea because this Necturna set will need a lot of chip damage to pick up KOs. Your own hazard removal is very important too, because Necturna will want to stay as healthy as possible, making hazard removers like Tornadus-T and Tomohawk great teammates. The aforementioned Tornadus-T and Tomohawk and Fire-types like Heatran help by pressuring bulky Grass-types such as Jumbao and Tangrowth. Mega Tyranitar and Weavile serve as great checks to Tornadus-T, one of the best checks available to this Necturna set. Mega Tyranitar also provides Stealth Rock support. Strong wallbreakers such as Mega Crucibelle and Ash-Greninja are great partners for Necturna, because they force in and chip many of Necturna's checks, making it easier for Necturna to sweep.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Choice Band set is usable to lure and take out traditional answers such as Tomohawk and for more direct wallbreaking prowess. This set can Sketch moves like V-create, Dragon Ascent, and Bolt Strike, which can surprise specific checks to its other sets, like Celesteela, Ferrothorn, and Tomohawk. With Power Whip, Shadow Sneak, and Stone Edge or Shadow Claw coupled with one of the aforementioned Sketch moves, Necturna can become a devastating wallbreaker. It should be noted that Choice Band sets should only be used to lure Pokemon like Tomohawk for a teammate.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tomohawk**: Defensive Tomohawk is the best check to Shell Smash sets. Thanks to its priority Haze, it can remove Necturna's boosts before Necturna will be able to move, and thanks to its great physical bulk, it will be able to take any hit and recover the damage with Roost. Tomohawk should be wary of Shift Gear and Choice Band sets, though, because they have the potential to power through it. It should be noted that offensive Tomohawk can beat these sets, as it outspeeds them.

**Faster Attackers**: Choice Scarf Greninja and Kitsunoh can revenge kill Necturna after it's used Shell Smash. Naturally faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Mega Crucibelle, and Volkraken can also prevent Necturna from setting up but will lose if Necturna manages to set up.

**Priority**: Sucker Punch users like Colossoil and Mega Mawile can easily revenge kill Necturna, but they have to be wary of Substitute. Ice Shard from Choice Band Weavile and Syclant can OHKO Necturna after Shell Smash's Defense drops. Mega Pinsir's Quick Attack is also capable of OHKOing Necturna after it's set up. However, none of these Pokemon are consistent answers to Necturna due to their lacking defensive utility.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Heatran, Volkraken, and Volcarona prevent Necturna from setting up but will lose if Necturna manages to set up against a teammate. Pyroak can potentially take a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare but is KOed after little chip damage, which isn't hard to achieve due to its Stealth Rock weakness.

**Flying-types**: Unburden Hawlucha outspeeds and threatens to OHKO +2 Necturna. Tornadus-T can OHKO Necturna with Hurricane and is naturally faster, preventing Necturna from setting up, but once Necturna has set up, it will lose. Zapdos can do heavy damage to Necturna with Heat Wave, isn't OHKOed by Necturna's Phantom Force, and can paralyze Necturna with Static.

**Steel-types**: Bulky Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Magearna can withstand most of Necturna's moves, but they aren't bulky enough to take a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare or appropriate coverage from niche Choice Band sets.

**Cyclohm**: Cyclohm has enough physical bulk to survive a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare most of the time, can recover off Phantom Force damage, does significant damage back with Ice Beam and Fire Blast, and can paralyze Necturna with Static.

**Multiple Z-Move targets**: Carrying multiple Pokemon of Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, Celesteela, and Jumbao will force Necturna to pick one to use its Z-Move on, allowing the other Pokemon to potentially deal with it.

* Other sets, such as Choice Band and Sticky Web can wallbreak thanks to Necturna's high-Base Power moves and support its team with a form of Speed control respectively. [Remove Sticky Web here, as it's not mentioned anywhere else in the analysis]

* While Necturna's base Speed is more than enough to outspeed offensive Pokemon when boosted, it usually falls short on Choice Scarf users like Greninja and Kitsunoh because of the necessity of running an Adamant nature. [Also talk about how its base speed is also bad before boosting, as Necturna is slower than most offensive threats before boosting]
* The presence of Pokemon like Syclant, Colossoil, and Weavile, which make use of strong, super effective priority moves, also make Necturna's job as a sweeper harder to pull off.
* Sets that aren't running Shell Smash have to specialize in beating defensive Tomohawk, and tend to have a worse match up than Shell Smash in other match ups, because of this.
* Necturna's abilities are also rather underwhelming, with its best option being Forewarn, which is only useful to show what Zygarde's strongest move is. If Forewarn shows Thousand Arrows, it's usually safe to set up with Necturna, because Zygarde will likely not have any way to hit Necturna hard. [This last point is unnecessary, because not having an amazing ability it's not really a negative when Necturna is already great without one. The part about Zygarde is very useful, but it's too specific for the Overview, so it should be moved to Usage Tips]

* Necturna fits incredibly well on many different archetypes. [The only archetype you mention is HO. Either remove this point or expand it to mention other ones]
* Psychic-types such as Mega Alakazam, Mega Latios, and Tapu Lele can take advantage of Tomohawk, Necturna's best counter. [Mention that Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain can prevent Necturna from being revenge killed by priority for a few key turns]

* Shift Gear is used instead of Shell Smash because it maintains Necturna's bulk, giving it the ability to keep taking Air Slash from Tomohawk while boosting in its face, while maintaining the ability to clean up late-game.
* Horn Leech is chosen instead of the stronger alternative, Power Whip, because Power Whip is inaccurate and doesn't hit any notable OHKOes when compared to Horn Leech and its ability to recover Necturna's health against Pokemon like Clefable. [Mentioning accuracy first makes it look like that is the main reason to pick Horn Leech over Power Whip, when in reality the other factors are far more important and having better accuracy is just a small bonus]
* Leech Seed, coupled with Leftovers, and Phantom Force's invulnerability turn, gives Necturna the ability to outlast defensive Tomohawk after it's used up a few Roost pp, and also keeps Necturna healthy while setting up on Pokemon like Celesteela.

* You should use Leech Seed to punish switches into Pokemon like Tomohawk and Celesteela, allowing Necturna to come out on top in a one-on-one situation.
* Against Tomohawk, you should consistently use Shift Gear to pressure it into using Haze. [Specify that this is only after using Leech Seed, as without doing that first, you don't achieve anything using SG]
* With Shift Gear Necturna, you should fire off attacks with it first to weaken the opposition before actually trying to sweep, because it's very weak and will be unable to break a healthy team.
* Because Shift Gear Nect is so weak, even after a boost, you should try to have hazards up on the opposing field to bring them down into KO range for Necturna Neturna. [Fixed small typo]
* You should attempt to set up with Shift Gear on Pokemon that can't touch Necturna, like Zygarde, Tapu Koko, and Choice-locked Landorus-T.

Thanks to Power Whip, Shadow Sneak, and Stone Edge or Shadow Claw coupled with one of the aforementioned sketch moves, Necturna can become a devastating wallbreaker once it's lured a traditional answer. [Mention how a teammate can also take advantage of the lured threats being gone]

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tomohawk**: Defensive Tomohawk is the best check to Shell Smash sets. Thanks to Tomohawk's priority Haze, it can remove Necturna's boosts before Necturna will be able to move, and thanks to its great physical bulk, it will be able to take any hit and recover the damage off with Roost next turn. Tomohawk should be wary of Shift Gear and Choice Band sets, though, because they have the potential to power through Tomohawk.

**Faster Attackers**: Choice Scarf Greninja and Kitsunoh can revenge kill Necturna after it's used Shell Smash. Naturally faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Mega Crucibelle, and Volkraken can also prevent Necturna from setting up, but will lose if Necturna manages to set up.

**Priority**: Sucker Punch from Pokemon like Colossoil and Mega Mawile can easily revenge kill Necturna, but they have to be wary of Substitute. Ice Shard from Choice Band Weavile and Syclant can OHKO Necturna after it's set up with Shell Smash once. Mega Pinsir's Quick Attack is also capable of OHKOing Necturna after it's set up. However, none of these Pokemon are consistent answers to Necturna due to their lacking defensive utility.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Heatran, Volkraken, and Volcarona prevent Necturna from setting up, but will lose if Necturna manages to set up against a teammate. Pyroak can potentially live a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare, but is KOed after little chip damage, which isn't hard to achieve due to Pyroak's Stealth Rock weakness.

**Flying-types**: Hawlucha hard checks Necturna, because it can outspeed Necturna, if Unburden is activated, even after a Shell Smash boost and threatens to OHKO Necturna. Tornadus-T can OHKO Necturna with Hurricane, and is naturally faster, preventing Necturna from setting up, but once Necturna has set up, Tornadus-T will lose. Zapdos can do heavy damage to Necturna with Heat Wave and isn't OHKOed by Necturna's Phantom Force.

**Steel-types**: Bulky Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Magearna can withstand most of Necturna's moves, but aren't bulky enough to take a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare or appropriate coverage.

[Add Cyclohm, who has decent chance at surviving a +2 NEN, completely walls Nect after that, and deals significant damage with Ice Beam]

Necturna really likes removal, particularly something to remove Toxic Spikes as its one of the only ways Necturna's sweep can be hindered. Because of this, the usual hazard control, as well as grounded poison types like Crucibelle and Toxapex, make excellent teammates.

* Necturna also fits on hyper offensive teams.

* Against Tomohawk, you should consistently use Shift Gear after it's been affected by Leech Seed to pressure it into using Haze and Roost. until it runs out of Roost PP (just to make it more clear that the goal isnt to make it use up hazes and set up, its to make it die from lack of roosts)
* With Shift Gear Necturna, you should fire off attacks with it first to weaken the opposition before actually trying to sweep, because it's very weak and will be unable to break a healthy team.
* Because Shift Gear Necturna is so weak, even after a boost, you should try to have hazards up on the opposing field to bring them down into KO range for Necturna.
* You should attempt to set up with Shift Gear on Pokemon that can't touch Necturna, like Zygarde, Tapu Koko, and Choice-locked Landorus-T.

Team Options
========

* Stacking hazards with Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Heatran, Clefable, and Arghonaut is a good idea to weak the opposition because this Necturna set will need a lot of chip damage to pick up KOes.
* Your own hazard removal is very important too, because Necturna will want to stay as healthy as possible, making hazard removers like Tornadus-T and Tomohawk great teammates.
* The aforementioned Tornadus-T and Tomohawk and Fire-types like Heatran help by pressuring bulky Grass-types such as Jumbao and Tangrowth.
* Mega Tyranitar and Weavile serve as great checks to Tornadus-T, one of the best checks available to this Necturna set. Additionally, Mega Tyranitar also provides Stealth Rock support.
Wallbreakers such as Mega Crucibelle, Ash Greninja and Band Zygarde act as great partners for Shift Gear Necturna as they force in and chip many of its checks, allowing it to more easily sweep later.

* A Choice Band set is usable for a more direct wallbreaking prowess. This set can sketch moves like V-Create, Dragon Ascent, and Bolt Strike, which can lure specific checks to its other sets. Thanks to Power Whip, Shadow Sneak, and Stone Edge or Shadow Claw coupled with one of the aforementioned sketch moves, Necturna can become a devastating wallbreaker once it's lured a traditional answer. Pokemon that appreciate Necturna's ability to weaken walls and lure bulky Grass-types, such as Volkraken and Ash-Greninja make for good teammates. Zygarde and Gliscor appreciate Necturna's ability to lure Tomohawk and weaken bulky Grass-types. Zygarde and Gliscor can act as Heatran checks in return.

Checks and Counters
===================

Although offensive Tomohawk variants can still beat these.

**Cyclohm**: Cyclohm has enough physical bulk to survive a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare most of the time, and can out heal Phantom Force, and does significant damage back with Ice Beam and Fire Blast.
Great Job Jordy not too much to change, mostly just nitpicks / suggestions rather than anything wrong. Gj

[OVERVIEW]

Necturna is the best setup sweeper in the metagame thanks to its lack of counters. Thanks to Necturna's access to Sketch, it can run a variety of notable moves like Shell Smash, Shift Gear, Dragon Ascent, V-Create, and Bolt Strike. Shell Smash is Necturna's best set, because it can overwhelm a very big majority of the metagame with +2 Attack, +2 Speed, and a Z-Move to break past bulkier foes. Thanks to its good bulk and typing, Necturna gets many set up opportunities against Pokemon like Tapu Koko, Chansey, and certain Zygarde sets. Shift Gear sets benefit off the popularity of Shell Smash sets, with people using defensive Tomohawk as their only Necturna answer a lot of the time, which Shift Gear sets can overload with the consistent chip damage and the fact that it'll recover more HP than it'll take. Other sets, such as Choice Band can wallbreak thanks to Necturna's high-Base Power moves.

While Necturna's base Speed is more than enough to outspeed offensive Pokemon when boosted, it usually falls short on Choice Scarf users like Greninja and Kitsunoh because of the necessity of running an Adamant nature. Unboosted, Necturna's base Speed is also rather underwelming, underspeeding Pokemon like Heatran, Landorus-T, and Zygarde. The presence of Pokemon like Syclant, Colossoil, and Weavile, which make use of strong, super effective priority moves, also make Necturna's job as a sweeper harder to pull off. Sets that aren't running Shell Smash have to specialize in beating defensive Tomohawk, and tend to have a worse match up than Shell Smash in other match ups, because of this.

Shell Smash turns Necturna into a devastating sweeper, capable of outspeeding the unboosted metagame and OHKOing many frail, and even bulky, Pokemon. I'd rather this read "OHKOing even [x] example" with Power Whip / Phantom Force (offensive Landorus-T, Toxapex come to mind) - you go over Z-move in set details, so no need to list examples for NEN Substitute gives Necturna a way to get around Colossoil and Mega Mawile's Sucker Punch and to avoid status ailments from Pokemon like Chansey.

Set Details
========

Ghostium Z is essential to overwhelm bulky Pokemon like Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, Jumbao, and Celesteela. An Adamant nature is preferred over a Jolly nature to OHKO Mega Scizor at +2 most of the time and to have a chance at OHKOing Toxapex at +2 without having to use its Z-Move.

Usage Tips
========

Thanks to Necturna's good defensive typing and decent defenses it can setup on a myriad of different Pokemon. For example, it can set up on a Choice-locked Landorus-T and Zygarde as well as Pokemon that can only do little damage to it like Tapu Koko and Ferrothorn. You should attempt to weaken the opposition with hazards and other teammates before attempting to set Necturna up for a sweep. Substitute should be used on a forced switch to ensure safety or against a slower status users like Chansey. You can use Necturna to force in Tomohawk to get an opportunity to switch a teammate like Mega Alakazam, Mega Latios, or Tapu Lele into play. Once Necturna's checks are weakened, you should feel free to sack Pokemon like Landorus-T or Heatran to Choice-locked Water-types like Volkraken and Ash-Greninja, because this usually allows Necturna to setup without being punished, and the match is usually sealed once Necturna sets up.

Team Options
========

Necturna fits incredibly well on teams ranging from bulky offensive to balanced teams. Psychic-types such as Mega Alakazam, Mega Latios, and Tapu Lele can take advantage of Tomohawk, Necturna's best counter. Additionally, Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain means Necturna won't be able to be revenge killed by Pokemon like Syclant, Colossoil, and Weavile for a few key turns. Similarly, Electric- and Fairy-types like Tapu Koko and Clefable could also be used for this purpose. is the purpose to take advantage of tomo? it sounds like you're referring back to Psychic terrain / revenge killing Pokemon that bait a Water-type attack from Choice-locked Water-types like Ash-Greninja and Volkraken such as Heatran and Landorus-T are useful because Necturna can use Shell Smash on Pokemon locked into Water-type moves, often sealing the game. Additionally, Heatran and Landorus-T can also set hazards. Spikes setters, such as Greninja, Ash-Greninja, and Ferrothorn help by weakening teams in range of Necturna to successfully sweep. Pokemon that can check Dark- and Fire-types like Ash-Greninja, Volkraken, and Heatran respectively, such as Arghonaut and Mega Latios are great teammates because Necturna will struggle to set up if these Pokemon are around, so having solid counterplay to them is important. VoltTurn users like Mega Crucibelle, Tornadus-T, and Tapu Koko can help with getting Necturna into play. Necturna appreciates hazard removal, particularly Pokemon that can reliably remove Toxic Spikes, thus Defoggers like Tornadus-T and Mega Scizor as well as grounded Poison-types like Mega Crucibelle and Toxapex make for great teammates.

Necturna also fits on hyper offensive teams thanks to its ability to snowball out of control quickly, especially when hyper offensive teams tend to make it easier for Necturna to set up. Tapu Koko can set screens for Necturna, which eases up setup, and can get it into play easily with U-turn, and can also make it easier for Necturna to set up a Shell Smash thanks to Taunt preventing status moves. Tomohawk is also extremely valuable on these types of teams, setting Stealth Rock for the team, and providing Memento support, allowing Necturna to set up easier. Maybe some examples of sweepers / wallbreakers that complement Necturna on these kinds of teams, since koko/tomo are support

Moves

Shift Gear is used instead of Shell Smash because it maintains Necturna's bulk, giving it the ability to keep taking Air Slash from Tomohawk while boosting in its face, while maintaining the ability to clean up late-game. this last sentence reads kinda weird Horn Leech is chosen instead of the stronger alternative, Power Whip, because Power Whip doesn't hit any notable OHKOes when compared to Horn Leech and its ability to recover Necturna's health against Pokemon like Clefable, it also has the added benefit of 100% accuracy. Leech Seed, coupled with Leftovers, and Phantom Force's invulnerability turn, gives Necturna the ability to outlast defensive Tomohawk after it's used up a few Roost pp, and also keeps Necturna healthy while setting up on Pokemon like Celesteela. Substitute can be run instead of Horn Leech to dodge status but does hinder its match up against Clefable. Running Substitute also makes Necturna more reliant on PP stalling Pokemon such as Arghonaut.

Set Details
========

The Speed investment is to outspeed defensive Tomohawk, while the bulk investment allows Necturna to avoid getting 2HKOed by Tomohawk's Air Slash after Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery. The rest of the EVs are dumped in Attack with an Adamant nature to maximize damage output. Mention the alternate EV spread that tanks Clef Moonblast for Sub sets

Usage Tips
========

You should use Leech Seed to punish switches into Pokemon like Tomohawk and Celesteela, allowing Necturna to come out on top in a one-on-one situation. Against Tomohawk, you should consistently use Shift Gear after it's been affected by Leech Seed to pressure it into using Haze and Roost, until it runs out of Roost PP. With Shift Gear Necturna, you should fire off attacks more accurately, spread Leech Seed and Horn Leech, since Pforce is two turns with it first to weaken the opposition before actually trying to sweep, because it's very weak and will be unable to break a healthy team. Because Shift Gear Necturna is so weak, even after a boost, you should try to have hazards up on the opposing field to bring them down into KO range for Necturna. You should attempt to set up with Shift Gear on Pokemon that can't touch Necturna, like Zygarde, Tapu Koko, and Choice-locked Landorus-T.

Team Options
========

Stacking hazards with Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Heatran, Clefable, and Arghonaut is a good idea to weak the opposition because this Necturna set will need a lot of chip damage to pick up KOes. Your own hazard removal is very important too, because Necturna will want to stay as healthy as possible, making hazard removers like Tornadus-T and Tomohawk great teammates. The aforementioned Tornadus-T and Tomohawk and Fire-types like Heatran help by pressuring bulky Grass-types that are immune to Leech Seed such as Jumbao and Tangrowth. Mega Tyranitar and Weavile serve as great checks to Tornadus-T, one of the best checks available to this Necturna set. Additionally, Mega Tyranitar also provides Stealth Rock support. Strong wallbreakers such as Mega Crucibelle, Ash-Greninja, and Choice Band Zygarde are great partners for Necturna as they force in and chip many of Necturna's checks, making it easier for Necturna to sweep.

I think these last two sentences are supposed to go into team options for the last set

Checks and Counters

**Tomohawk**: Defensive Tomohawk is the best check to Shell Smash sets. Thanks to Tomohawk's priority Haze, it can remove Necturna's boosts before Necturna will be able to move, and thanks to its great physical bulk, it will be able to take any hit and recover the damage off with Roost next turn. Tomohawk should be wary of Shift Gear and Choice Band sets, though, because they have the potential to power through Tomohawk. It should be noted that offensive Tomohawk can beat these sets, as it outspeeds them.

**Faster Attackers**: Choice Scarf Greninja and Kitsunoh can revenge kill Necturna after it's used Shell Smash.

Zapdos can do heavy damage to Necturna with Heat Wave and isn't OHKOed by Necturna's Phantom Force can paralyze with Static.

**Steel-types**: Bulky Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Magearna can withstand most of Necturna's moves, but aren't bulky enough to take a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare or appropriate coverage from niche Choice Band sets.

**Cyclohm**: Cyclohm has enough physical bulk to survive a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare most of the time, and can out heal Phantom Force, and does significant damage back with Ice Beam and Fire Blast also can paralyze with static.

Somehow it might be nice to note that one of the best ways to beat Necturna is to just have a couple of Pokemon that can tank NEN and then Nect has to choose which one to take out / the opponent wastes too much time trying to weaken them

Shift Gear sets benefit from the popularity of Shell Smash sets causing players to use defensive Tomohawk as their only Necturna answer a lot of the time, which Shift Gear sets can overload with thanks to (parallelism, still meh but w/e) Leech Seed's consistent chip damage and the fact that they'll recover more HP than they take. Other sets (RC) such as Choice Band (RC) can wallbreak thanks to Necturna's high-Base Power moves.

The presence of Pokemon like Syclant, Colossoil, and Weavile, which make use of super effective priority moves, also make makes Necturna's job as a sweeper harder. Sets that aren't running Shell Smash have to specialize in beating defensive Tomohawk to be justifiable, and they tend to have worse matchups than Shell Smash on average.

Moves

Shell Smash turns Necturna into a devastating sweeper that's capable of outspeeding the unboosted metagame and OHKOing many frail targets (RC) and even some bulky Pokemon like Toxapex and Landorus-T with Power Whip. Substitute gives Necturna a way to get around Colossoil's and Mega Mawile's Sucker Punch and to avoid status ailments from Pokemon like Chansey.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

Thanks to Necturna's good defensive typing and decent defenses, it can set up on a myriad of Pokemon, (comma) For example, it can set up on such as Choice-locked Landorus-T as well as Pokemon that can only do little damage to it like Tapu Koko and Ferrothorn. You should attempt to weaken the opposition with entry hazards and other teammates before attempting to set Necturna up for a sweep. Substitute should be used on a forced switch to ensure safety or against slower status users like Chansey. You can use Necturna to force in Tomohawk, giving a swtich-in opportunity to a teammate like Mega Alakazam, Mega Latios, or Tapu Lele an opportunity to switch in. Once Necturna's checks are weakened, feel free to sack sacrifice a Pokemon like Landorus-T or Heatran to Choice-locked Water-types like Volkraken and Ash-Greninja so Necturna can freely set up and win.

Team Options
========

Heatran and Landorus-T Those two can also set Stealth Rock.

Necturna also fits on hyper offensive teams thanks to its ability to get out of control quickly, especially when hyper offensive such teams tend to make it easier for Necturna to set up.

Shift Gear is used instead of Shell Smash because it maintains Necturna's bulk, giving it the ability to keep taking Air Slash from Tomohawk while boosting. Horn Leech is chosen instead of the stronger alternative, Power Whip, because Power Whip doesn't get any notable OHKOs when compared to to warrant giving up Horn Leech's perfect accuracy and ability to recover Necturna's health against Pokemon like Clefable. Leech Seed, coupled with Leftovers and Phantom Force's invulnerability turn, gives Necturna the ability to outlast defensive Tomohawk after it's used a few Roost PP and keeps Necturna healthy while setting up on Pokemon like Celesteela. Substitute can be run instead of Horn Leech to dodge status, (AC) but this hinders Necturna's matchup against Clefable. Running Substitute also makes Necturna more reliant on PP stalling Pokemon like Arghonaut.

Set Details
========

The Speed investment is lets Necturna to outspeed defensive Tomohawk, while the bulk investment allows Necturna it to avoid getting 2HKOed by Tomohawk's Air Slash after Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery.

Usage Tips
========

You should use Leech Seed to punish switches to Pokemon like Tomohawk and Celesteela, allowing Necturna to come out on top in a one-on-one situation. Against Tomohawk, you should consistently constantly use Shift Gear after Leech Seed to pressure it into using Haze and Roost, until it runs out of Roost PP. In general, you should fire off Leech Seed and Horn Leech with it first to weaken the opposition first before actually trying to sweep, because it's Shift Gear Necturna is very weak and will be unable to break a healthy team. Because Shift Gear Necturna is so weak For the same reason, even after a boost, you should try to have entry hazards up on the opposing field. You should attempt to set up with Shift Gear on Pokemon that can't touch Necturna, like Tapu Koko and Choice-locked Landorus-T.

Team Options
========

Other Options
=============

A Choice Band set is usable to lure and take out traditional answers such as Tomohawk and for more direct wallbreaking prowess. This set can Sketch moves like V-create, Dragon Ascent, and Bolt Strike, which can lure surprise specific checks to its other sets, like Celesteela, Ferrothorn, and Tomohawk. Thanks to With Power Whip, Shadow Sneak, and Stone Edge or Shadow Claw coupled with one of the aforementioned Sketch moves, Necturna can become a devastating wallbreaker. It should be noted that Choice Band sets should only be used to lure Pokemon like Tomohawk for a teammate.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tomohawk**: Defensive Tomohawk is the best check to Shell Smash sets. Thanks to its priority Haze, it can remove Necturna's boosts before Necturna will be able to moves move, and thanks to its great physical bulk, it will be able to take any hit and recover the damage with Roost.

Naturally faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Mega Crucibelle, and Volkraken can also prevent Necturna from setting up (RC) but will lose if Necturna manages to set up.

**Priority**: Sucker Punch from Pokemon users like Colossoil and Mega Mawile can easily revenge kill Necturna, but they have to be wary of Substitute. Ice Shard from Choice Band Weavile and Syclant can OHKO Necturna after it's set up with Shell Smash's Defense drops. (optional, clarity) Mega Pinsir's Quick Attack is also capable of OHKOing Necturna after it's set up. However, none of these Pokemon are consistent answers to Necturna due to their lacking defensive utility.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Heatran, Volkraken, and Volcarona prevent Necturna from setting up (RC) but will lose if Necturna manages to set up against a teammate. Pyroak can potentially take a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare (RC) but is KOed after little chip damage, which isn't hard to achieve due to Pyroak's its Stealth Rock weakness.

**Cyclohm**: Cyclohm has enough physical bulk to survive a boosted Never-Ending Nightmare most of the time, can out-heal recover off Phantom Force damage, does significant damage back with Ice Beam and Fire Blast, and can paralyze Necturna with Static.

**Multiple Z-Move targets**: Carrying multiple Pokemon of Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, Celesteela, and Jumbao will force Necturna to pick one to use its Z-Move on, allowing the other Pokemon to potentially deal with it.
