New to 5th Gen, Rate my Team?

So, I am new to the 5th gen metagame. I have loaded some teams of this site as to test and figure out the 5th metagame. Now, I have decided to formulate my own team.

Keep in mind, during this rate, that I'll accept constructive criticism, but please, no flaming. I am new to 5th gen, and I am also new to Smogon, but I am not an idiot. If you see something blaringly obvious that is wrong with this team, I'd like to know without derogatory comments. Thanks! :D

On all my other teams, I ran into a pokemon I knew not: Terrakion. He always swept my team and I never found a good spot for Gliscor in my team, nor did I find another good counter. Nidoqueen worked, due to her Rock/Fighting resistance, but she never added anything to my gameplay. So, I decided to create a new team instead of modifying it, in which I would use my own Terrakion.

Note: This team has been play tested, where it did fairly well, but not extensively. I'm not as familiar as most of you with the threats in OU, so I'd love to hear your advice, and that is why I made this RMT.

So I started with Terrakion, deciding to use a preset from Smogon analysis because I didn't know much about the pokemon.

Now, I needed a good pokemon to supplement Terrakion. I've always loved Resttalk Gyara, and I've found him to be very a great wall as well as a helpful phazer.

I wanted a great stall breaker, and none fit the spot better than Gliscor.

Now, I always look for a spot for Breloom on my teams because of how it works. I love the Bulk Up Breloom, and I thought he would do nicely within this team.

Now, I needed balance, because I felt my team was slightly on the physical side. I also wanted to be able to absorb more types of attacks, and I thought a special attacker fire type with Flash Fire would be great at absorbing common fire type aimed at Breloom, and would add balance to my teams offense. So, Heatran joined the team.

Now I needed a lead, because I didn't think any of these pokemon were fit to do it. I remembered fighting a Shell Smash team that beat me 6-0. I thought maybe a lead that could baton pass Shell Smash would be great, because it could hugely benefit Terrakion, and Heatran, as well as Breloom somewhat.
I looked at Gorebyss and just wasn't happy with it. Then, I thought about Smeargle... he could Spore, and that combined with Focus Band would give me at least 3 turns to get two SS's and a BP. So, Smeargle made the cut.

Okay, so here's the extensive analysis.

images

Picasso (Smeargle) (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Moody
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Shell Smash
- Baton Pass
- Spore
- Substitute
Picasso, my Smeargle, is just a lead, and not much else. His uselessness in other aspects of the game are a hindrance, but since I can put one pokemon to sleep with him, I effectively remove an opponents pokemon from playing on the majority as well. Spore, Shell Smash, and Baton Pass are self-explanatory. Substitute is there for possible extra SS, and a possibility to BP the Sub. It's situational, and I don't normally use it. I run Moody over Own Tempo, because even though I know it may lower the stats I want to add, it also adds +2 to a random stat, which gives me more versatility to who I'd like to pass to. i.e., if SpA had a Moody gain to equate to +6, I'd rather pass to Heatran than Terrakion.

Rapist (Terrakion) @ Life Orb
Trait: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- X-Scissor
- Quick Attack
Rapist, my Terrakion, has a fitting name. When playing with other teams, opponent's Terrakions effectively raped my entire team, hence the nickname. With the two Shell Smashes usually received from Smeargle, Terrakion reaches a ridiculous Attack stat of 1428 and a Speed stat of 1384, ands the Life Orb boost raises it even higher, allowing it to rip through whole teams with no problem. It becomes a glass cannon however, because of the -2/-2 to it's defenses, and priority moves can remove it fairly easily. Still, it is a force to be reckoned with, and I have won 6-0 multiple times with this pokemon.

gyarados_by_morrokko-d31dcj0.png

Fauxdrag (Gyarados) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Waterfall
- Roar
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
Gyarados' great typing combined with his bulk, access to rest, sleep talk, and roar, and the great ability intimidate make him a great physical wall, phazer, and status absorber. This EV spread gives him the most bulk possible, maximizing the power of rest and and being able to stop physical sweepers in their tracks with intimidate, allowing me to switch in a better pokemon or take them with Waterfall, if they're ground or fire sweepers, which are very common.

images

LittleBitch2 (Gliscor) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Toxic
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
- Protect
Gliscor is, in my opinion, the greatest stall breaker in OU. Status absorber, great typing and bulk, and access to protect and toxic, racking up damage on the opponent. EQ is STAB and for steel types immune to toxic, and Ice Fang is for dragons and opposing Gliscors.

breloomanalysis_breloom.jpg

Little Bitch (Breloom) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 Atk / 16 Def / 240 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Drain Punch
- Seed Bomb
- Bulk Up
- Spore
Bulk Up Breloom is an all round great pokemon. Decent bulk, combined with Poison Heal makes him not so very fragile. Spore with Bulk Up lets me gain power and Drain Punch adds to the already large HP Gain per turn. You may wonder why I run two Spores on a team, and, in my experience, the pokemon that was put asleep by Smeargle is usually awake or dead by the time I bring out Breloom, because I don't use him early game most of the time.

Fahrenheit (Heatran) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 Hp / 100 SDef / 160 Spd
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Lava Plume
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Will-o-Wisp

Edited to a SpD Heatran for entry hazards and defense. Lava Plume for 30% burn chance.

EDIT: Note that I've never done stat calculations before and am not very good at it, so I may have made a mistake with commenting on what the stats shall become with a passed Shell Smash.

You should make Heatran Air Balloon with Stealth Rock in place of Flamethrower. Now you have a Stealth Rocker and a sun "counter."

Next, your team is very weak to powerful water attacks. Things such as Specs Politoed can 2HKO Gyarados while even KOing Breloom, even with minimum roll! Therefore I suggest you change Breloom to Celebi or Virizion. They both soak up water attack and can sweep weakened teams.

The sets
Virizion @ Leftovers
Trait: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Giga Drain
- Calm Mind
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast

or

Celebi @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 216 HP / 252 SAtk / 40 Spd
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Recover

You should probably change Gliscor for a Scarf Landorus. It let's you revenge kill Volcarona, Dragonite, Haxorus, and other threats that your team might find overwhelming.

Set
Landorus (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sand Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Next, Smeargle is a very weak link to your team and is generally going to be useless on most matches. Therefore I suggest you change it to Reuniclus. It is a great stall breaker as now Gliscor is changed. There's almost nothing Stall Teams can do to beat it and it makes your team less entry hazard weak.

Set
Reuniclus (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
- Recover

Lastly, change Terrakion to Choice Band. You don't lose HP and it really does a lot of damage; and since Smeargle is gone, you won't be getting Passes either.

Hopefully, these changes helped you! Good luck!

You should make Heatran Air Balloon with Stealth Rock in place of Flamethrower. Now you have a Stealth Rocker and a sun "counter."
I'll strongly consider SR. Air Balloon is great to switch in on EQ, but I'm reluctant because of how much I use Heatran, I feel it's single use isn't worth it?

Your Virizion and Celebi sets look great, I'll playtest them both. I love Breloom, but, they probably run smoother, and can help cover my weakness to special waters.

You should probably change Gliscor for a Scarf Landorus. It let's you revenge kill Volcarona, Dragonite, Haxorus, and other threats that your team might find overwhelming.
Of course, Landorus has similar powerful typing and is a great attacker, but don't you think I need the stall breaker?

And I run LO over CB because I prefer versatility.

I'll implement your Reuniclus set, and without the BP start, I can give Terrakion CB and Scarf Heatran. It's a diff strategy, but I'll definitely test it out. Thanks a bunch!

@Braseg. I didn't realize that. I play PO, and I'm allowed to use it, so, sorry, I don't understand a lot of this. under what terms is it banned?

Oh, and Lightz, if I were to run your Reuniclus set along with Virizion and a CB Terrakion, what lead would I use?

EDIT: Playtested your changes, and I went out badly with 2-5, instead of my old 6-2. I'll keep them in mind when editing though, thanks for the sets and input.

Your lead would (as usual) depend on what your opponent has on his/her team, and what you think matches up best with the majority of the opposing Pokemon.

First off, one of the main problems I see with your team is that you're running a ResTalk phaser with no entry hazards, which is a complete waste. Also, considering the offensive nature of your Heatran, you lack switch-ins to choiced Dragon-type attacks. Specs or LO Latios will easily sweep your team, or a majority of it, depending on its moveset. In order to remedy this, I suggest you change your Heatran to a specially defensive Heatran with Stealth Rocks. This gives you a solid switch-in to the boosted Draco Meteors that are so overwhelmingly common in the OU metagame, and a more definitive check to special sweepers like Jirachi or Celebi. Specially defensive Tran can also shrug off Volt Switch from the likes of Rotom-W.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 100 SDef / 160 Spd or 248 HP / 252 SDef / 8 Spd
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Lava Plume
- Stealth Rock
- Protect / Earth Power (for other defensive Heatran) / Roar
- Toxic / Will-o-Wisp

Basically the standard Smogon set for specially defensive Heatran with a few changes to accommodate your need for entry hazards and possible status spreading.

Next, your team severely lacks speed / an effective revenge killer. To remedy this, I suggest taking out Smeargle and replacing it with a Choice Scarf Haxorus. Adamant Choice Scarf Haxorus can take out Dragonite even through Multi-scale, and is a massive late-game sweeper. Haxorus also boasts the ability to outspeed and revenge kill huge threats such as +1 Gyarados and +1 Dragonite.

Haxorus @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Brick Break
- Dual Chop

The reason for Dual Chop in the last moveslot is to revenge kill SubDD Gyarados in the event that Breloom is weakened. SubDD Gyarados hugely threatens your team. It can easily come in on Gliscor, Sub on the predicted Toxic, then DD on the switch (Ice Fang generally will not break the sub), and potentially sweep.

Good luck with the team.

Thanks a ton y4f. I use gyarados to effectively make other opponents sweepers useless, because roar removes their boosts. But, yes, to make it effective entry hazards make sense.

I've used a specially defensive heat ran like that before, and I really liked it. I don't know why I didn't put that in before. Thanks a ton.

And I will try the Haxorus set. About the Sub DD gyarados, I usually Roar with my own gyarados, effectively breaking his sub and DD, but you're right about weakness to him. I have a weakness to bulky waters in general. The Dual Chop set looks like a great counter and late game sweeper. The only problem with removing Smeargle is I feel I have to rework the strategy of the team. i.e, returning and editing every pokemon so they aren't set up to receive BP. I will try it though, thanks:)

You have a good team idea, but I did notice a general weakness to the popular Rotom-W/Scizor core: Scizor's Bullet Punch rips through Terrakion while Quick Attack is resisted, Rotom kills Heatran and Gliscor through Hydro Pump, and Breloom does not have enough bulk to last through repeated U-Turns and HP Fire/Ice from Rotom. Therefore, I propose a Gastrodon to replace Smeargle due to the fact it will completely wall Rotom unless it carries HP Grass. The set is as follows:

Gastrodon @Leftovers |Trait: Storm Drain
Bold nature | 252 HP 56 Def 196 SpD
Earth Power
Scald/Ice Beam
Recover
Toxic

This set has been slightly modified to tank hits from Scizor as well as shut down most special sweepers. After this modification, you might have to come up with a new lead, but I feel this set will serve you well. Good luck!

I'm going to try your Gastrodon set, see how it works. You left an extra 4 EV's an I'm applying them to defense. I love Storm Drain, as it absorbs bulky waters attacks with ease, but the pokemon itself doesn't appeal to me. Still, if it works, he's hired.

What do you think about trying a Latios, as a Calm Mind set would be an effective check for Rotom W? Thanks for the help!

Why don't you run Dragon Tail over Roar on Gyarados? With his good attack, it gives you a chance to deal some damage while you phaze.

Judging by the comments of you guys, this team doesn't need only editing, it needs a complete reworking. I'm going to take all of your advice and play test and figure out a new team. There will be so much editing involved it will be a new team and editing this thread is pointless. So, effectively closing this thread. Thanks for the advice everyone, and once I reach a new team, and play it extensively, I'll post another thread.

Generally, Calm Mind sets are more preferable on Latias because of its superior bulk, but either of the Lati@s can wall Rotom-W. You can use Energy Ball to hit Rotom super effectively, but Gastrodon's walling capabilities allow it to cover Scizor as well, easily walling the common Volturn combo while threatening Scizor with burn from Scald. The choice is yours however. If you like Latios, I would suggest a custom set I use:

Latios @Expert Belt
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
-Draco Meteor
-Energy Ball
-HP Fire/Surf
-Psyshock/Surf

HP Fire for Scizor, but Surf can be used instead. This set bluffs Specs so when Scizor switches in expecting a Draco Meteor, it'll instead be KOed by HP Fire. Try this too, and then you can decide :D.
