Project Next Best Thing: USUM UU (Week 45: Jellicent - Submissions)

Congratulations to Moutemoute for winning this round, you have my vote as well, its scary how this set can completely steamroll unsuspecting teams as they send in a passive wall against your Maggron. Your set will be added to the Hall of Fame shortly!

For week 9 we will be looking at one of the longest standing OU pokemon who only this gen graced our presence, Starmie! With possible bulky routes and lots of coverage / Z-move potential there is certain to be a hidden gem in sight. Sets are due 3/28/18.

The following sets are blacklisted:

Starmie @ Life Orb

IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Rapid Spin / Psyshock

reserving defensive starmie

lol I love this mon

Starmie @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 36 Def / 220 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Recover
- Scald
- Rapid Spin
- Reflect Type / Reflect / Ice Beam

This is defensive Starmie cuz we love it. Recover + lefties are bulky combo, Scald cripples attackers by burning'em while also giving Starmie a STAB. RSpin for hazard removal. Reflect Type changes Starmie's type since it has a few weaknesses and can be good when used in the good moment. Reflect places Screens and allows Starmie to tank some Koffs like Krook's one. Ice Beam punishes Serperior. 220 SpD allows Starmie to tank Devastating Drake from Tias as well as +0 Leaf Storm from Serperior which it punishes in switch-in w/ Ice Beam.

AIGHT EVERYONE, we going for gold here. Clearly going to be the best starmie set.

This is Z-Gravity starmie

starmie.gif

Starmie @ Psychium Z
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Gravity
- Hydro Pump
- Thunder
- Blizzard

So the main idea, z-gravity increases starmies special attack by 1, while also increasing accuracy which can turn stamie into a great late game sweeper once faster pokemon and scarfers are taken out of the picture. After the +1 raise, starmie has 449 (450 basically) special attack and with its base 115 speed gives makes it a force to be reckon with.

Z-Rain Dance

Starmie @ Waterium Z
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Thunder
- Rain Dance

Here we have an offensive Starmie, which holds a Waterium Z in order to get a +1 Spe boost if Rain Dance is powered up. This Spe boost allows Starmie to outpace slower Scarfers in HO teams (or faster pokemon in general) and this star has plenty opportunities to set-up the manual Rain for free thanks to its Spe and the numer of switch-ins it provides..

Z-Rain Dance is a one-time-use Choice Scarf or a Water nuke (if +1 Spe is not needed), thus condensing the LO set and the Scarf one.

Rain Dance is also useful to run Thunder instead of Thunderbolt because the former is noticeably stronger than the latter and has a nice 30% chance to paralyze something in our path.
Otherwise, you have the possibility to have a one-time Water-type nuke on your side when the +1 Spe is not needed.

In a very convincing victory, DraconicLepus takes it with her Z-Gravity Starmie set! Congratulations, your set will be added to the hall of fame soon.

For week 10, we'll be looking at one of the premier dragons in the tier, Hydreigon!
hydreigon.gif

This pseudo legend has a plethora of nasty coverage options and can run a deceptively high amount of items. The following sets are blacklisted:

Hydreigon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Fire Blast / Defog
- U-turn / Defog

Hydreigon @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Flash Cannon
- Fire Blast

Hydreigon @ Poisonium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Belch
- Fire Blast / U-turn

Sets are due 4/9/18.

Tailwind Hydreigon

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- U-turn
- Tailwind

General idea
Draco Meteor is an hard-hitting move that has the problem to cripple your SpA once used, but U-turn allows you to switch out and reset this condition. You can even use U-turn to escape from Faeries, which check/counter this moveset entirely in order to switch in with a proper countermeasure.
Tailwind allows this Hydreigon to outspeed some threat you can deal with effectively with a Spe boost (i.e. Latias) and support your teammates with a fast U-turn plus turns of Tailwind for one incoming partner. Thanks to the number of switches Hydreigon provides, you are able to set up a Tailwind for free and, if your opponent has a Fairy/Steel at high HP (out of the range of your Dark Pulse), you can click U-turn (great move towards targets weak to it even with an hindering nature) or simply switch out.

EVs spread and item
EVs spread and nature is pretty standard. Life Orb is chosen to hit as hard as possible, while keeping the possibility to change moves freely.

Team(mates) support
A way to deal with Faeries and Steels is mandatory: with this Hydreigon alone you are hopelessly walled by them.

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Draco Meteor / Flash Cannon
- Superpower
- Roost / Flash Cannon

The idea is simple; Superpower allows Hydreigon to lure an otherwise safe switch-in in Blissey, and if combined with Flash Cannon, Hydreigon is able to effectively dismantle stall teams. Roost is can be replaced with Flash Cannon if you want to have both Draco and Flash Cannon on the set, although Roost helps negate LO recoil and lets Hydreigon last longer. A Hasty nature is used so that Hydreigon is able to outspeed aa many threats as posible, and LO is used to increase the damage output and be able to 2HKO Blissey without hazards (it's a roll) and Phys Def Sylveon with Stealth Rock up and a small amount of chip.

4 Atk Life Orb Hydreigon Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 426-502 (59.6 - 70.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

-1 4 Atk Life Orb Hydreigon Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 283-335 (39.6 - 46.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

59.6 + 36.6 - 6(lefties) = 93.2
70.3 + 46.9 - 6(lefties) = 111.2

252 SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Sylveon: 177-208 (44.9 - 52.7%) -- 84.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
(don't forget the lefties it gets from the Protect turn)

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet but here it is:
Z-Belch Hydreigon

Hydreigon @ Poisonium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Belch
- Fire Blast/Roost/U-turn/Defog

The most common switch-ins to hydreigon consist of special walls/fairies for the most part: Blissey, Sylveon, Togekiss, and the rare Snorlax. Although the set doesn't lure all of these at once, z-belch still allows you to effectively lure sylveon and togekiss, even possessing a decent chance to KO Sylveon after rocks, while KOing togekiss most of the time from full. Z-belch is a cooler lure than flash cannon/iron tail because although it is only a one-time use, it hits the fairies that would otherwise be able to stomach hydreigon's attacks easily with more power, and you don't need to worry about random iron tail misses.

252 SpA Hydreigon Acid Downpour (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Sylveon: 322-380 (81.7 - 96.4%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Hydreigon Acid Downpour (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Togekiss: 358-422 (95.7 - 112.8%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

Cool set that should be used more often!
Isn't this blacklisted?

Isn't this blacklisted?
Woops, didn't see it there. Sorry about that.
In any case, I have another hydreigon set to post, I know this is gonna seem incredibly gimmicky(especially since there's no Draco Meteor)but bear with me.

Work Up Hydreigon

Hydreigon @ Steelium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Work Up
- Iron Tail
- Dark Pulse
- Superpower

Hydreigon can run iron tail on its life orb sets to lure sylveon and togekiss, but a large issue in this is the shaky accuracy of iron tail. A boosted Corkscrew crash takes care of those two without prior damage needed. Superpower is nice for dealing with blissey, while also hitting empoleon for great damage, which is always nice. Unfortunately, using this set means that you have a more difficult time dealing with mons like maggron and hippowdon even with dark pulse due to minimal special attack investment; it lacks the power and/or speed consistency standard hydreigon sets possess.

+1 252 Atk Hydreigon Corkscrew Crash (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Sylveon: 476-560 (120.8 - 142.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 Atk Hydreigon Corkscrew Crash (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Togekiss: 528-622 (141.1 - 166.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 Atk Hydreigon Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 612-722 (85.7 - 101.1%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

haven't really seen this set much this generation, but it's still a pretty cool one. allows you to 1v1 suicune as long as you don't get ice beamed, serves as a more sustainable check to shit like volcanion, and annoys other shit like stall. life orb is better if you don't want to lose a ton of pp vs cune but dragon z is also cool

Just a heads up, with UUPL / exams / soccer playoffs on my club team coming up, this project will be going through a short break, for 2-3 weeks depending on how busy I am. Thanks for being consistent these 10 weeks and bringing all your ideas!

Voting ends 4/15/18.
